Chapter One:
In a world where soulmates exist, Percy Jackson is one of the lucky ones. If you're lucky, a mark, also known as a soulmate mark or tattoo, will appear on a part of your body on your sixteenth birthday. Some people don't have a soulmate tattoo, indicating either one of two things. Either their soulmate died before they received their mark, or they never had a soulmate at all. Some people get their tattoos only to have them disappear the moment their soulmate dies.
Percy had searched every square inch of his body for his soulmate tattoo on his sixteenth birthday, only to find it on the small of his back, right in front of his ass. The mark itself is alluring, a blue owl, which is quite unusual in terms of soulmate marks; not everyone receives colored marks. It is much more uncommon to share a colored soulmate mark with your soulmate than to share a non-colored mark. Nobody knows why or how some people's marks are colored, but scientists have concluded that those who share a colored mark will have a stronger and deeper connection than most.
Percy is in love with his soulmate mark, but it is in an inappropriate location. When asked to show his tattoo, he simply laughs and shakes his head before pulling out a photograph of it. Percy had accidentally flashed everyone in Titian's cafe his ass the last time he revealed his tattoo in public. That had not been a good day.
Every morning before he gets dressed, Percy looks in the mirror buck naked, not because he's a horny teenage boy, though he is, but because it's more refreshing to look at his tattoo without any clothes on. After the third time she walked in on him staring at himself, Sally Jackson learned how to knock.
Speaking of Sally Jackson, she had suffered the loss of her soulmate a year after Percy was born. Poseidon had been lost at sea for more than six months before her soulmate mark vanished. She, like Percys, had a colored tattoo with Poseidon. She had never recovered from losing him; it was as if she had lost a piece of herself when he died.
Percy will find himself thinking about his father at random. Of course, he'd met him, but Percy was only four months old when he sailed away. He had no recollection of his father. He has no recollection of his smile or his sparkling, sea green eyes; all he has are photos and stories from his mother.
"Are you thinking about your father?" Sally Jackson inquired as she placed a plate of pasta in front of her son. He was currently sitting at the kitchen table, staring at a photo album their family had made for Sally following Poseidon's death. Before thanking his mother for the pasta, Percy found himself staring at a photo of himself and his father.
His father appeared lively in all of the photographs. Why did he have to die when his smile was so bright, and he appeared so happy?
In response to her question, Percy set the photo down and nodded. "He looks so happy in all of these pictures," Percy mumbles as he grabs his fork and shoves a pile of noodles into his mouth, several pieces hanging from the outside of his mouth.
Sally reaches down and takes the photograph Percy was looking at. She looks at the photo longer with a sad smile before putting it back down. "Your father was the happiest person I've ever met," she said, smiling down at Percy. "You remind me of him so much."
Sally reminds him of his resemblance to his father nearly every day, and Percy always smiles, every single time.
She walks into the kitchen to start doing the dishes when she comes to a halt. She turns around and looks at her son for a split second before opening her mouth. "How do you feel about moving to California?"
Percy was taken aback by the question, and not because he was thinking about moving. Percy and his mother had moved several times throughout his life, half of the time fleeing Percy's ex-abusive stepfather, Gabe. Gabe was a true monster, and it took the cops over two years to track him down and arrest him after Sally admitted the truth to them.
Gabe married Percy's mother when he was seven years old. Gabe was initially thoughtful and kind. He used to bring Percy toys and play with him, but that all changed a month after they married. Gabe had transformed into a man Sally didn't recognize. He turned out to be an alcoholic who was also extremely poor. He started hitting Sally when he was angry, sad, or even happy. Sally took all of the pain, thinking that if Gabe took it out on her, he'd leave her innocent little boy alone, but she was mistaken. Gabe was drunk out of his mind and came home early from the bar one evening while Sally was at work. He swung at the eight-year-old boy after catching a glimpse of him. Sally blamed herself for abandoning Percy at home, but she should have blamed her abusive husband.
Gabe had promised her he would get sober and never touch Percy again, but he was lying about both of those promises. He not only became a heavier drinker, but he also began to harm Percy not only physically but also mentally. He would subject the child to inhumane treatment until he was old enough to understand what was going on. Percy had told his mother about Gabe's actions when he was ten years old. She immediately went to the police station.
Sally divorced him and went to court, which she won. He was sentenced to ten years in prison with no possibility of early release. Gabe had escaped from prison when Percy was eleven years old and returned home seeking vengeance. He showed up at the Jacksons' house one night armed with a shotgun and a knife. Sally was shot in the shoulder while defending Percy, and Percy was stabbed in the stomach after leaping in front of his mother. Their next-door neighbors were nearby and called the cops the moment they heard a struggle.
Sally and Percy fled New York after he was re-incarcerated and never returned. Sally suffered from severe PTSD as a result of the attack, while Percy developed mild paranoia. No matter where they went, neither of them felt safe.
"California seems fun, but isn't it super-hot there?" Percy responded. Percy had no trouble moving away once more. He has no friends at his current school, due mainly to his avoidance of social interactions. He doesn't want to become attached to someone he will eventually lose. They never stay in one place for an extended period of time. When Percy was 12, they had lived in one place for the longest time. They had moved to Delaware and stayed there until Percy's thirteenth birthday.
Sally shook her head and chuckled. "It's very hot there, but you know what that means," she paused for dramatic effect and grinned broadly at her son. "That means more beaches." The beach is like a second home for Percy and Sally so of course Percy perked up.
"When would we move?" Percy inquired before shoveling more noodles into his mouth and chewing loudly. Percy is aware of how time-consuming moving can be. Enrolling him in a new school, arranging for plane tickets (if necessary), locating an apartment, and so on, can be lots of work and time.
Sally opened her mouth and appeared to be at a loss for words. She closed her mouth and then opened it again, this time with a response. "The following week. I've already found a two-bedroom apartment in a good neighborhood. I've also found you a school to attend." She gave her son a shuddering smile, fearful of what he would say.
Percy arched his brow. She appears to have been planning to leave for quite some time. Normal teenagers would be angry at their mother for constantly moving them, but Percy understands why Sally does so, and Percy enjoys moving. Every year, he can pretend to be someone else.
Has Percy ever wished to settle down? He has considered it but has yet to find the right place.
"I promise, Percy," she said solemnly, looking into his eyes. "Someday we will settle down and you will have the life you deserve."
Percy finds himself packing up everything he owns and throwing it into trash bags a little more than a week later. They can't afford to rent a moving truck, so Sally's beat-up minivan will have to suffice. He takes one last look around the small room he calls his own, making sure he hasn't overlooked anything. He's only been in this apartment for a little more than five months, but he has no attachment to this room; it doesn't feel like home.
He has never felt at home anywhere he has lived. No apartment building or house will ever change the fact that his mother is his home.
Sally knocks three times on his door before entering, a large trash bag full of pillows and blankets trailing behind her. "Are you ready? I just finished packing the rest of my belongings." She looked around his room and nodded, satisfied with how it looked. Percy Jackson is a very messy person, which means that every time they move, Percy usually has a mouse or ants living in his room, and let's not forget the time Sally discovered a literal wasp's nest in her son's closet when he was fourteen. Don't ask Percy how or why he had a wasp nest in his closet, because he has no idea.
Percy nodded and followed her into the living room, closing his bedroom door once more. He observed his mother struggling to get the large trash Bag through the narrow doorframe. Percy rushed over to assist her, and she responded with a wide smile and a mumbled thank you.
Without their belongings, the apartment appeared quite empty and, for some reason, seemed smaller. Percy continued to carry the trash bag down the stairs after closing their apartment door, while Sally called their landlord to inform him that they had officially moved out.
Percy and his mother made it to the front of the building after nearly falling down several steps. Percy stood at the door as Sally arrived in her minivan, opening the trunk to retrieve the last of their belongings.
She laughed and honked the horn as her son tossed the trash bag into the trunk, popping it shut on his way over to the passenger seat. Sally began to play the directions as soon as he got into the car. When Percy said the directions said they'd arrive in nearly nine hours, his eyes nearly popped out of his head. He has severe ADHD and cannot sit still for long periods of time even when medicated. He hopes his mother will let them stop at least a few times to stretch their legs.
"How do you feel about moving?" Sally inquired; her gaze fixed on the road as she turned right. She speaks again before Percy can respond. "And be truthful; don't lie to me."
Percy shrugged and looked out the window, his eyes wide with boredom. He detests lying to his mother, so he tells her the whole truth. "I don't really mind. I mean, this is what, the tenth time were moving?" He chuckled, as if he were joking, but he wasn't. After six times, he lost count. "Plus, I can't wait to get back to the beach," he said gratefully to his mother.
Sally seemed unsure about his response, so she remained silent for another minute before speaking. "I'm sorry we move around so much, Percy," Sally laments. "Last week, Bob fired me from Hank's Burgers. According to reports, they were laying off nearly 30% of their employees due to tax increases." Sally was embarrassed to tell her son she had been fired, but she knew Percy would be understanding and wouldn't judge her for losing another job. "There were no jobs around our area that would pay well enough for us to survive."
When Sally was seventeen and a junior in high school, her parents died. Her grandmother was diagnosed with stage two lung cancer shortly after her parents died. She used all of her savings, time, and money to get her grandmother treatments; she even forewent her high school diploma and college education to help support and save her grandmother, but in the end, she died.
Sally was unable to return to school because she was pregnant with Percy. She had Poseidon there to support her emotionally and financially but after he had died, she was back to square one, except broker.
Percy scoffs angrily. "Did they really fire you?" He sighed and rolled his eyes. "You're the hardest worker they've ever had! Why would they let you go?" Percy was furious; he could see his mother's pain just by looking into her eyes. This isn't her first firing, but she was close to the manager and owner of the fast-food restaurant, so it's questionable why they would fire her.
She turned left and frowned at Percy. "I'm not sure." They both know she was lying. Maybe Sally will tell Percy why she was fired one day.
They remained silent for 30 minutes before Percy groaned of boredom. He decided to ask random questions in the hopes of making the time fly by. "I forgot to ask you about it, but what school am I going to?"
"Half-Blood Highschool," Sally said as she came to a halt at a red light. She shifted her gaze to her son. "I spoke with the headmaster, and he will have a student give you a tour and show you around on your first day," she said sharply. "Be nice to them; they're just trying to help."
Percy laughed dryly and rolled his eyes. "Mom," he said in a tone that indicated he was attempting to reason with her. "Do you remember what happened the last time a student gave me a tour?" He paused for a moment to allow Sally to recall. "They tried to shove my head down a toilet," he grumbles as he sinks deeper into his seat.
Percy has a bad luck with bullies; they always seem to find him in some way.
Sally exhaled a sigh. "You are completely right." She took a breather. "Should we just homeschool you this year? It is possible for me to save enough money to buy you a laptop and enroll you in an online school?" She suggested, and Percy could tell she was serious by the tone of her voice.
"No, thanks though. Online school seems to be very depressing." He sighed and returned his gaze to the window. This was going to be a long drive.
Percy felt like he was going to jump out of his skin after two hours, so he demanded that his mother pull over to the side of the road so he could stretch his legs. With a small smile on his face, Percy found himself staring up at the sky. Percy adored the outdoors, where everything was ten times more beautiful, especially at night. He could watch the trees slowly move with the wind and he could never get enough of the way grass smells.
It took them another six hours to get to their new apartment and another hour to successfully move their belongings in. They'll come out to the car in the morning to get the rest of their belongings, but until then, Percy found himself dragging a trash bag full of pots, pans, and other kitchen items up the stairs. It was a pain that their apartment was on the seventh floor, especially in a building complex without an elevator, but Percy was not one to complain. The apartment complex his mother chose is really nice, especially considering how poor they are.
Unlike their previous location, this one appears to be free of cracks in the ceiling and mold on the floor. The walls are painted a disgusting pale-yellow color that fits the theme. He finally makes it to the seventh floor and drops the trash bag of belongings onto the floor. He couldn't help but smile as he studied the apartment for the first time. This apartment was by no means large, but Percy doesn't mind. He was more excited about the clean, leak-free walls. He entered the kitchen and proceeded into the hallway, which led to a bathroom and two bedrooms. The first bedroom on the right appeared to be the largest and belonged to Sally.
The second bedroom, on the left, is smaller but much larger than his previous bedroom. He smiled again as he noticed the color of the room. Usually, they can't afford enough paint to completely redo his room, so he ends up with purple or pink walls for months until they move again. This time, the room was painted blue, his favorite color. The color was a deep blue that screamed ocean.
Sally presented an inflatable mattress and placed it on his floor. Sally will raise enough money in a week or two to buy them normal beds again, but until then, they're both stuck with the dollar store variety. Percy, on the other hand, can't complain because they're sometimes more comfortable than the mattress his mother buys him.
She spreads out two blankets and smiles at her son before kissing him on the cheek, which he gladly accepts. "Get some rest because I'll need your help organizing the house tomorrow. I've already ordered new furniture with the money from the sale of the old ones, and it should arrive tomorrow." She took a breather and smiled. "Then you have school on Monday."
Instead of groaning, Percy bit his tongue. He despises school more than he despises that stupid Taylor Swift song he keeps hearing on the radio, which is saying a lot considering how much he despises that song.
Percy considers school to be the equivalent of hell. Every school he has attended has ended in disaster for him. Several lawsuits and expulsions have been filed in his support. It was an accident that he set fire to the piano room his freshman year. When he was in seventh grade, he also let four rats loose in the principal's car, which was an accident. How was he supposed to know that his principal was deathly allergic to rats?
He closes the door and collapses onto the mattress after his mother leaves his room. Even though it was 11:43 p.m., he was not tired. He couldn't stop thinking about school. He is curious whether he will meet his soulmate at this school. He thinks about it every time he moves, and each time he loses more and more hope. He is desperate to meet his soulmate. It's not unheard of to meet your soulmate in high school, but it's more likely to happen in your twenties.
Percy is sick of being alone, and he knows it's all his fault. Of course, he has his mother, but that isn't always enough. Sometimes he wants to hang out with friends and do stupid teenage things like run around the street at night. He occasionally wishes he had a girlfriend with whom he could brag and love. He wants to hold her hand and show her the world, but he's only 17 years old. Meeting his soulmate might not happen for many years to come, but he will wait for her.
He fell asleep that night dreaming of Gabe and woke up screaming. Seems like some things never change.
He finds himself in front of a large, old-looking school two days later. It appears to be the type of school seen in a horror film. As he moved closer to the school, his entire body fought against him. He wanted nothing more than to run back home, but he knows he has to get this over with. It can't be that bad, can it? Hopefully, the person showing him around will not attempt to flush his face down the toilet.
He walks closer and closer to the school until he is right in front of the doors. He scoffs to himself after rolling his eyes. When he walks into the building, his eyes almost pop out of their sockets. This school was magnificent, and Percy had never said that about a school before. This school still looks like it belongs in a horror film, but it is modern.
He scrunches his brows together as he looks down at the paper his mother handed him before he left this morning. His learning disabilities make it difficult for him to read this paper. According to the piece of paper he needs to locate the office, they will give him his schedule and he will also meet his tour guide there.
On his way to the office, he runs into several people, but after ten minutes of searching, he finds it. It's a good thing he arrived at school a little earlier today. He pushes the office doors open and is greeted by a grumpy secretary.
The lady looks at him before making a finger motion. As she studied him, Percy moved closer to her and smiled weakly. "Are you new here?" She makes an assumption.
Percy gave a nod. He was at a loss for words. It was as if his mouth refused to cooperate.
"Figures," she says quietly as she searches for his schedule. Percy despises her, but she's already been more helpful than half of the other secretaries he's met. "Are you Percy Jackson or Thomas Avery?" She inquires.
"Percy Jackson." He responds as he takes his schedule from her grasp. She squints at him and points to one of the seats near the wall.
"Go sit over there, Percy Jackson, your tour guide will be here shortly," she says, returning her gaze to the computer in front of her. Percy bows his head and observes his twitching hands. He decided to look over his schedule while waiting for his tour guide. Chemistry is his first class of the day, followed by American History. He already despises both of those classes. He has gym after American History, followed by lunch. He has his final two classes after lunch, Algebra 2 and English. At least at this school, he wasn't required to take a bunch of electives.
"Are you Percy?" A girl approaches him and asks. He lifts his head and makes direct eye contact with the girl. She beams at him as he nods his head. This girl was very attractive and dressed differently than any of the other whores he'd ever accosted. She was dressed casually in gray sweatpants and a cropped Hello Kitty shirt. She was clearly not wearing a bra, but she didn't seem to mind. She also doesn't appear to be wearing any makeup.
Her eyes appeared to be changing colors, which Percy found quite incredible. He's not sure whether they're brown or green. "My names Piper, and it looks like im going to be giving you a tour of this shitty school," Percy couldn't help but laugh as the secretary stares the girl down with a deadly glare. Piper returns the same stare and smirks as she walks out the door, expecting Percy to follow her, which he does.
Percy smirks and walks alongside her after the door is closed. "What's up with that old lady at the front desk?" He decides to inquire. He sees her snort and shake her head. As they walk down the left corridor, she tugs at her hair.
"That witches name is Hera. The majority of the teachers at this school use their first names." Piper sighs as she steals his schedule. "Honestly, I think it's weird, but you get used to it." Piper looks down at his schedule for a few seconds, studying it.
"I have never been to a school where teachers actually let students call them by their first names," he chuckles and notices two kids sprinting down the hallway. A teacher observes them running past them as if it were a daily occurrence. "That teacher didn't even yell at them?" He inquires.
Piper raises her head from his schedule and laughs aloud before making a hand gesture. "Thats just Leo and Travis," she snorts and shakes her head. "Those two running down the halls are the teachers' least concern."
Percy arches his brow. The teachers at this school appear to be more laidback than at any other school he has attended. He saw a boy sprint down the hallway like those two boys just did when he was fifteen. Two security guards tackled him and suspended him for running down the halls.
"So, basically, you have Chemistry first, which stinks because you have Mr. Apple as your teacher," she shivers and smiles at him. "He's probably the third worst teacher you could have," she paused. "Perhaps fourth, coach Hedge can be quite annoying at times."
"If his teachers use first names, so why wouldn't he? Mr. Apple is the worst name ever." A cough from behind him startled him. Piper froze before smiling awkwardly at the person standing behind him. He rolled his eyes and cursed mentally. He suspects the teacher he was just talking about is standing behind him. Of course, this would happen within the first twenty minutes of being at school.
He slowly turns around and, weakly waving his hand, smiles at the teacher.
The teacher narrows his eyes at both of them before rolling his eyes and walking away, sipping his coffee as he leaves.
Piper started to laugh once he was gone. Percy couldn't help but join in.
"Piper," squealed a girl, launching herself at Piper. She threw Piper off balance, and they both fell to the ground. Piper didn't hug the girl back; in fact she squeezed her eyes shut. Percy did the exact same thing when he was being touched by somebody he doesn't want touching him.
After several more seconds of Percy standing there awkwardly and the two girls on the floor, both of them stand up. The girl who tackled Piper has the appearance of a diva, a diva straight out of a movie, specifically high school musical. The girl has long eyelashes which are coated with mascara. She was wearing large hop earrings and had lipstick on. Her outfit included ripped, baggy jeans and a tight crop top. Her flowy long hair follows her as she moves and talks, there's no doubt in Percys mind that Shes pretty, but she is not his type.
The girl looks at him with a wide smile. He's relieved she's not making one of those flirtatious remarks he always seems to get as the new kid. "I'm Silena. You are Percy, right? Piper told me she was going to give you a tour of the school, so I volunteered to help her." She grins again as she hooks her arm around his. Percy isn't sure he likes how touchy she is. From behind his back, he sends a helpless look to Piper as Silena begins to drag him forward with him. Piper only shrugs and walks slowly behind them.
"So, Percy, what does your soulmate mark look like?" Percy is taken aback by the question and looks at the girl. He was astounded to see her expression remain unchanged.
"Silena does this to literally everyone," Piper says as she drags Percy away from Silena's grasp. "You'll get used to it in time. Also, if you tell her where your soulmate mark is, she will curse you "Piper's last remark was obviously sarcastic, but it was amusing to watch Silena roll her eyes.
"My soulmate mark is in too much of an embarrassing spot to show," he laughed sheepishly while rubbing the back of his neck. He'd rather not almost flash two teenage girls right now.
Silena laughed. "Trust me," she said in an unreadable tone of voice. "It can't be that bad," she then says to Piper. "Is Annabeth's mark really on her left boob? I wasn't sure whether to believe Luke when he told me that last night at Dakota's party."
Piper rolled her eyes and threw her head back in laughter. "I doubt it. Annabeth has never showed me or anyone her soulmate mark."
Percy has no idea who this Annabeth girl is, but he decides to chime in anyway. "Maybe she doesn't have one," he muses.
"Piper would know," Silena said while giving Piper a side eye. "They're like, best friends now!"
The bell rung which interrupted their conversation. Silena groaned loudly as she abandoned both of them and walked in the other direction. There goes his other tour guide. He looks over to Piper with a smile that hopefully says please help me.
"Luckily for you Percy Jackson, we have the same class together," she smiles happily. "Well Chemistry and English."
Percy Jackson is not a cliche person by any means, although he does believe in love at first sight, what can he say he is a romantic. When Piper dragged him into their Chemistry class (he refused to go in because of Mr. Apple), he saw the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. She was pacing back and forth in front of the class, as if she was nervous about something. She was biting her lower lip, which turned him on a little too strongly. She was wearing sweatpants, just like Piper, but instead of a cropped top, she was wearing a very long sweatshirt with the name Chase written on it. Could it be her boyfriend's sweatshirt? Her hair is a curly mess of blonde, and her face, particularly her eyes, is lovely. He's never seen anyone with gray eyes before.
"Percy," Piper rolled her eyes. "You are literally drooling," she says as she points at the drool running down his cheek.
His cheeks turn red, and he quickly wipes it off before anybody notices. Thats embarrassing.
SLOWBURN PERCABETH WARNING.
