Chapter 7: Walking with Sleepwalkers
Previously
"I think I have an idea that can get us there without those creep-walkers recognizing us..."Jazz said as she went to her closet and pulled something out.
Star raised a brow at what she found.
"Jazz, what are you doing with that?..."Star asked.
"Pop quiz, Star...so how good are you at sewing?..."The older girl asked and Star was beginning to worry.
Not just for her boyfriend, but for what his sister is going to make her do.
Present Time
It was very late in the evening, passed midnight and the streets were crawling with Nocturn's sleep walkers.
They roamed the streets, looking for any more people whom they can put helmets on and render asleep, as per their master's orders.
However, two of these sleep-walkers weren't planning on doing that.
Why?
Simple...they aren't actually Sleep-walkers.
They were Star and Jazz, whom are now dressed in green sheets that they made alternations in order to make some make-shift costumes.
"I cannot believe that I let you talk me into this..."Star whispered harshly to the disguised red head next to her.
"Hey, I'm not too crazy for this either but we needed a way through and this was the best idea I had..."Jazz said, adjusting her mask to see better and redirecting their attention to the mission at hand
FLASHBACK
A few minutes ago
"Pop quiz, Star...so how good are you at sewing?..."The older girl asked and Star was beginning to worry.
"Um...not that great..."Star said, still unsure about this.
Jazz sighed.
"Well... it'll have to do..."She said as she got more green sheets.
"I'm gonna need some scissors and some strings..."Jazz said as she explained the rest of her plan.
You see, Jazz's idea was to sew some green sheets into Sleep-walker costumes.
"Are you serious?..."Star asked.
"Yes, we'll just disguise ourselves. ..."Jazz said as she placed several sheets in front of her.
"This should work. I mean, I don't think that those ghosts have the best eyesight. Plus, they look like bed-sheets with stitches anyway..."She commented.
"Why do you have so many green sheets anyway?..."Star asked her.
"Let's just say my Dad's not very good with laundry...Jazz said, recalling the last washing incident that left a lot of their clothes and sheets green.
Jazz then turned to Star.
"Come on, we got disguises to make..."She said and Star sighed, hoping that this would work.
End Of Flashback
Present Time
That is what happened.
Now the two girls were wearing disguises. They weren't exactly perfect either, they were just wearing sheets that were too long for them with slit eye sockets that had loose stitches that made it harder to see.
To be blunt, they looked more like shoddy characters from a remake movie than actual ghost minions.
"I can barely see anything and these stitches make it hard to have peripheral vision..."Jazz said.
"Hey, I told you that I wasn't great at sewing and I still don't see how this could work in the first place..."Star complained before she nearly tripped. "Plus, you couldn't have cut the sheets more so we wouldn't risk tripping?..."She complained again.
"Then maybe you should have left me in my sleep..."Jazz said, sounding bitter and Star knew why.
"You're still upset about the way I woke you up, aren't you?..."The blonde girl guessed.
Jazz frowned, but no one could see due to her costume.
"Of all things, why did you have to scare me by thinking I'd end up married to Dash Baxter of all things? Couldn't you just...I don't know, tried to haunt me or come after me dressed as a giant bat... or something..."Jazz complained, since that was much less horrifying in her book.
"Sorry, but I was desperate and it was all I could think up on a short notice..."Star said, pulling up the eye hole again, so she could see better.
They stopped talking as a few Sleep-walkers floated past them, however, they just moved passed, not even noticing them or suspecting anything.
Star was surprised to say the least.
"I can't believe that this is working. Even I think disguises are basically rejected Halloween costumes..."Star whispered to the red head.
"Well, from what I gathered, these creep-walkers are more like simple, mindless minion type ghosts instead of actual sentient ghosts like their master is..."Jazz said.
"Sleep walkers..."Star reminded.
Jazz ignored her as they kept walking.
They soon made it to the street of their first destination, coming across more sleep walkers, but they still were fooled by the costumes as well.
"Okay, Tucker's house is around the corner and Sam's is about 3 blocks from here..."Jazz said.
"Well, let's go to Tucker first since he's closest...plus, he might be able to explain more about this helmet, maybe even hot wire it to link with others from a distance..."Star said as she was carrying it within her disguise.
"Maybe, but first we need to get to him without being caught, so we can wake him and Sam up..."Jazz said.
"And Valerie..." Star added.
"Valerie?..." Jazz questioned and the blonde girl nodded.
"She's my best friend and she's on our side now, even if she's not officially part of the team. Plus, she can give us extra firepower..." Star pointed out with a whisper as they reached the end of the block.
"Fine... but we'll probably need more help before we can get to her. Best to get the nearby help first..." Jazz said, her focus everywhere, making sure the sleep walkers never glanced in their direction.
Star sighed but nodded, knowing how far away Valerie is.
The two girls kept walking, heading to Tucker's since he was closest, so he can help with the helmet.
At The Foley's Residence
Jazz and Star managed to get to Tucker's house without alerting the Sleep walkers.
Due to not having a key on them, they had to break a window to open the door and were now inside. They soon saw that Tucker's parents were on the couch together, both of then were hearing helmets and were fast asleep.
"I guess this means that we don't have to worry about a lawsuit..."Star said as she waved her hand in front of them, seeing that they really were out of it.
"Come on, let's go get Tucker, wake him up and get this thing working..."Jazz said.
"Okay but first let's take these things off..."Star said, taking her disguise off.
Once done, the two girls went upstairs to Tucker's room. There, they saw the tech geek was asleep and he too had a helmet on.
"Okay, there he is, time to get to work..."Jazz said as they set up the helmet.
Star was about to activate it but hesitated, which Jazz noticed.
"What's wrong?..."She asked.
"Yeah…I kinda don't want to go in his head, I have no idea what I'm about to see..."Star admitted. "Danny once told me that he had a dream of having chocolate milk...with two of me..."She muttered.
Jazz shuddered, now seeing the picture. She shook her head as she was gonna probably have to talk to Tucker later.
"Pretty sure he violated some "dude code" or whatever but you still have to go..."Jazz said. "You know how to do this. So go in and I'll keep an eye out in case we're spotted..."She said.
Star sighed as she connected the helmet to Tucker's, dreading what she might see.
"If he's making out with a version of me, I'm making his worst nightmare come to life..."Star muttered as she placed the helmet on and soon entered Tucker's dreams.
In Tucker's Dream
Star found herself outside and in front of a huge mansion, filled with expensive looking cars, helicopters and a bunch of other fancy stuff.
"Yep, this is definitely what I expect for Tucker's dream..."She said as she went inside.
The interior of the mansion was exorbitantly decorated as the exterior, only with painting of Tucker replicating other famous paintings or showing off his wealth. Then there was the living room, which was big enough to fit an entire house. It was covered with similarly colored tech with a large sofa in the center, where Tucker was seen.
Not to Star's surprise, and partially to her annoyance, Tucker was sitting down with Paulina and Colette in each arm, caressing him with loving expressions while flirting with him.
Star rolled her eyes at that.
"Of course..."She thought in annoyance as she watched the dream version of the people she dislikes most fawning over the tech geek.
"Oh, Tucker, you're so handsome..." Dream Paulina said flirtatiously.
"Yes, and charming. You're much more interesting than all the other men out there..."Colette flirted with him, giving him the same looks she gives Danny in real life.
It disgusted Star as she watched the dream version of the tech geek hit on the two worst people in her life.. Tucker, meanwhile, was loving the attention he was getting from them.
"Of course...now, my lovely ladies... can I interest either of you ladies in a beverage? Say…a root beer float.."Dream Tucker said to his guests.
He pushed a button on a remote he had on hand, summoning a fridge that flew in on helicopter propellers. It opened by itself to show its shelves stacked with many beverages.
Paulina and Collette gasped as they ran over to grab a drink before going back to flirting with Dream Tucker.
Star wasn't sure if she should gag or vomit at the sight.
"Gross...I have to wake him up before we find out how my puke affects his subconscious or whatever..."She said as she was about to approach him, only to hear something.
The sound of a vacuum entered the room as a janitor entered. Tucker took notice of the man, in his blue uniform and hat, along with some cleaning supplies;
"That will be all, Fenton..."Tucker said to his servant.
One that looked like Danny, who was dressed as a janitor and carrying a mop. He also had a tired look on his face.
"Yes, Sir..."Dream Danny said.
Star's jaw dropped when she saw this and felt her temper rise.
"Wait...my boyfriend's the JANITOR?!..."She said, looking insulted for her man.
Whatever Tucker had planned next, Star didn't see or cared about as her fists clenched over seeing him order her man around, even if it was just a dream version of him.
"Now for some ambiance..."Dream Tucker said as as the wall speakers played cheesy romantic music while Paulina and Colette cuddled closer to him.
Now Star was really annoyed and even more disgusted by what was going on in his mind with her two hated enemies.
"Hate to cramp your style, Tucker but...actually, no...I'm gonna enjoy this almost as much changing Collette's hair green..."Star said as she decided to end this but not before having a little fun of her own.
As the Dream Danny was washing some windows, Star moved out of her hiding place and tapped his shoulder. The boy looked in confusion as the girl cupped his face and gave the unsuspecting boy a kiss on the cheek.
Dream Danny was awestruck and turning red as Star pulled away, sending him a loving look. While she knew that this isn't the real Danny, just a dream version of him, she still couldn't help herself.
"T-Thank You, miss... but why did you do that? Not that I'm complaining or anything.."Dream Danny said, still blushing like a school boy.
"Because I wanted to, plus you deserve it..."Star said in a sweet tone. "You're a lot better than what Foley thinks. Never forget that..."Star said gently as she leaned in, gazing into Dream Danny's eyes.
As Star walked away, Dream Danny smiled, now filled with confidence. He felt a surge of joy from what Star did.
Dream Danny even stared at the window he was cleaning and knew now he had enough. He promptly threw his cleaning supplies away and walked out the door, throwing his hat to the ground.
"You know what? She's right. I am SO out of here and I'm going to try and join the program at NASA and study hard again..."He said before leaving, quitting the job he hated so much.
Star smiled at that before she frowned as she recalled why she is here.
"Now for Foley..."She said, as she saw the tech geek getting cozy with the dream girls.
She knew it was time to put an end to things.
"Mon amor..." Colette started as she scratched underneath Tucker's chin. "Has anyone ever told you how béau you are?..."She asked flirtatiously.
"Hey! I already told him that a hundred times! Today!..." Paulina quipped, becoming competitive with her.
Colette glared at her, becoming jealous.
The girl jumped away from Tucker as they made clawing gestures at each other. Tucker only watched with a smirk as he got up to play mediator.
"Now ladies, there's enough of me to go around..." Tucker said in a suave tone.
"Then in that case, you won't mind if I join in..." Star quipped as she made her presence known.
She was also carrying something, which the tech geek noticed.
"Star? What are you doing here? And why are you putting my patent pending PDA's in the trash can?..."Dream Tucker asked with a worried tone.
Star smiled with sadistic glee as she gestured to it before speaking to the tech-obsessed dreamer.
"Oh, didn't you hear? PDA's have been rendered obsolete all over the world since cellphones are more advanced and less bulky..."She said, seeing a horrified look on the tech geeks face.
"What!?..."Dream Tucker shouted in horror and couldn't believe it."B-but my company makes the best ones..."He said, hoping that she's wrong.
"Well, I guess that's it for your money. Should've invested in something less dated..."Star said with a smug look as the tech geek looked horrified.
"AHHHH!..."Dream Tucker screamed and the entire world turned to static and faded away.
In reality
Tucker screamed awake as his helmet broke. Star also removed her own helmet and saw him waking up, looking horrified.
"Man, what a nightmare!..."Tucker complained, feeling a strange sense of deja vu right now.
"Well now, you just woke up to a worse one..."Jazz said as Star showed him the helmet in her hands.
Tucker gulped as he knew that this meant.
"Nocturn's back? Seriously?..."He asked.
"Seriously! What's worse, he's trapped Danny with some kind of special helmet and nothing I've done can wake him up..."Star said, looking worried.
"Which is why we gotta free Sam and find a way to free Danny before Nocturn and his creep walkers take over the town...'Jazz said.
"Sleep walkers..."Star and even Tucker both said at the same time.
Jazz frowned in annoyance before motioning Tucker to his desk.
"Just fix the stupid helmet..."She said.
"Alright..." Tucker said as he stretched and got out of bed. "Get my stuff on my desk... "He said as he pointed as Jazz walked over and grabbed some stuff that might be important.
However, before they could do anything, the boy felt Star grab him by the collar, hoisting him to her face. Tucker saw the angry look on her face and felt his spine shiver in fear.
"H-hey, Star…what's the matter?..." Tucker asked, fearing for his and his PDA's life.
"You have some nerve making my boyfriend, your best friend, a janitor after everything you two have been through!..."Star scolded him. "And another thing...Paulina and Colette?! Seriously?! Paulina is bad enough but COLETTE?! I thought even you could see how awful she is by now!..."She said, still disgusted by what she had just witness.
Tucker heard this and frowned.
"Hey, that was private! Plus, while your step-sister is a pain, she's still hot and she is technically single..."Tucker said with a shrug, as if that justified things.
Star sent him a disgusted look.
'You're unbelievable..."She said and the tech geek tried to defend himself.
"It was just a dream and my business! What's wrong with having a fantasy?!..."He complained.
Star rolled her eyes and decided she'll deal with him later.
"Just help me with this helmet...I wanna see if it's possible if we can reach people's dreams from here or if we have to put on those stupid costumes again..."She said, wanting to get back on track.
Jazz frowned at that and Tucker took the helmet.
"I'll try my best. Lucky Danny left me a copy of the schematics and notes..."He said as he pulled said documents from under his bed.
Tucker quickly read them over and looked over the helmet, taking off a few plates as he inspected the wiring.
Around 5 minutes had passed and Star's patience was wearing thin.
"Well?..."She asked.
"I'm looking over this as fast as I can but this is high tech stuff, I'm a techno geek, but not a professional engineer..."Tucker said as he looked over the blueprints.
"Just hurry, we have no idea what Nocturn is planning right now..."Star said impatiently.
After a few more minutes of reading and checking the helmet, Tucker turned to them with the helmet, the fixes already done.
"Good news...looks like I can upgrade the system and have it hack into the other helmets farther away..."Tucker said and both girls looked relieved.
"Really?..."Star asked.
"Yeah, but I'm gonna need some wireless adapters and enough power to increase the signal without draining or overloading it. Plus, it'll need at least a 10 minute cool down time so that it overheat itself..."Tucker explained.
"Then let's get started..."Star said as she was ready to move on with their rescue mission.
"Check the basement. My dad and I save a bunch of cool tech…well, anything that seems cool. There should be enough there, along with some pliers, spare phone batteries and the fudge pops." Tucker said.
Star stopped and sent him a look.
"The helmet needs fudge pops?..." She asks, but already figuring what his real need for them were.
"... yes..." Tucker said after a small pause.
Star rolled her eyes and left, coming back in a few minutes with all he asked for. Soon enough, the tech geek was completing his task.
"Okay, that should do it..."Tucker said but he was cautious since this helmet is still untested.
"We should test it out first..."Tucker said, finishing his fudge pop.
"No time, try and see if you can sync with Valerie..."Star said.
"Valerie?..."Tucker questioned.
"Yes, Valerie. While Vlad might think she's still his pawn, she's on our side now and I know that she can help us out here..."Star said, wanting her friend's help.
Tucker shrugged and did as instructed, not against having her join the team.
"Alright, I guess you're going to Valerie's dream next..."Tucker said as he typed on his computer after plugging the helmet into it.
He replaced the plates on the helmet. He gave it to Star after a quick inspection, pretty sure it won't backfire on them.
"You sure this is a good idea?…"Jazz asked.
"Definitely!…" Star said as she was about to put it on, but not before turning to the tech geek.
"You are sure that this will work, right?..."She asked, wanting to be sure.
"Yeah, I'm 90% sure that it will..."Tucker said as he double checked his calculations.
Star stopped when she heard that and sent him a glare.
"90?!..."She questioned, not liking the sound of that.
"Yeah..."Tucker said, seeing her glare.
"And the other 10 percent?..."Star demanded.
Tucker gulped and sent her a nervous smile as he spoke.
"Good chance the helmet, while on your head, will explode..."He said hesitantly.
Star sent him a shocked expression while groaning and facepalming.
"Are you kidding me?!..."She said, sounding upset.
Before she could argue further, they could hear more sleep walkers flying by outside, they quickly hid and kept away from the windows, managing to avoid detection.
"That was close..."Jazz said.
"Yeah..."Star agreed before she went back to arguing with Tucker.
"For a guy with high grades in science and math... you're an idiot..."Star said, not liking this.
The tech geek frowned at that, insulted.
"Hey, I'm doing the best I can with this complex piece of equipment. I go to high school, not MIT..."Tucker argued.
Star glared at him. Before she could argue further, Jazz placed a hand on her shoulder, getting her attention.
"Star, I know that this is risky but the only other option is putting the disguises back on and have a bigger risk of being out in the open before we can get wake anyone else..."Jazz reminded her.
Star still looked unsure while Tucker tried to calm her down.
"I know what I'm doing... Look, a 90 is still an 'A'..."Tucker said, gesturing to the helmet.
"Only barely, an A- by the way..."The blonde girl muttered before sighing.
Seeing no other option besides the disguises, Star gave in. Mostly because she was still unsure the disguises would fool those sleep-walkers forever.
If my hair catches fire, I'm going break that stupid PDA of yours..."Star said as she reached for the helmet.
Tucker gulped and got worried.
"Don't touch Cindy, she didn't do anything to you!..."Tucker said as he held his precious PDA protectively in his hands.
Both Star and Jazz rolled their eyes before they realized that they had a mission to get back to.
Star soon placed the helmet on and braced herself as she searched the town for Valerie's signal, hoping to find her and set her free too.
The sooner, the better.
