31 Days of Sonic Prompt 14: Wish.
Starstruck
Rouge was the type who saw what she wanted and did everything to get it. If there was an obstacle standing in her way, she flew over it or kicked straight through it. She was a formidable force in the eyes of all who knew her, a bat who took the necessary means and risks to accomplish her goals.
Wave was the same. Whatever she wanted, she snatched it. Her methods might have been slightly more wicked, such as planting a bomb on Sonic's Extreme Gear, but Wave and Rouge were from the same cloth. They were proud thieves and left the challengers in their dust, not bothering to give their opponent a chance to catch their breath, grinning as they choked.
Naturally, this included each other. In a competitive race to the finish, neither offered a helping hand. The coveted first place was glimmering gold, leaving behind shiny silver for the girl in second.
But in the quiet moments, without prying eyes, they laced their fingers together. They didn't need to rush and chose to linger. With arms wreathing around each other and heads resting on shoulders, they made their world the other girl. Under the streetlight after a candlelit dinner or in the glitzy atmosphere of Rouge's club, they clung to each other and breathed in the scent of the other's perfume.
It was nearing midnight. Wave and Rouge had found time in their hectic schedules to meet after weeks apart. Babylonian heists and GUN missions filled their calendars. Sometimes, they met on opposing sides, but even those encounters were romantic. A coy whisper in Wave's ear before swiping a gem from out under her or a sly finger grazing Rouge's chin while dashing by her were little moments that left the other yearning for their date night.
The dinner was fine and fancy. The dancing was, too. Rouge and Wave had snickered about buffoons with two left feet on the ballroom, biting back peels of laughter when one man crashed into a hapless waiter carrying hors d'oeuvre. It was perfect.
The walk home was as well, too. Their outfits matched, decorated in jewels, silk dresses, and heels. Downtown Station Square was bustling with activity as people hurried to casinos, clubs, and hotel rooms. But their destination was toward the docks where the Babylon Rogues had parked their zeppelin, for they had an early morning quest in Gigan Rocks as ordered by Jet to rob the relics left behind by their ancestors.
It was unfortunate. The night was still young, but Jet's commands were absolute. Wave's ties to her fellow Rogues were unshakable. Not even Rouge could persuade her otherwise, but Wave's loyalty was only one of the several attributes that charmed Rouge.
They came up to the black shoreline that twinkled with stars reflecting in the sea. They were like diamonds, ones that Rouge wanted to steal. She escorted Wave to the zeppelin, parked at a painfully small dock with countless parking tickets taped to the blimp. It was cute that law enforcement thought the thieves would actually pay for their illegal parking.
Their fingers remained entwined. Even at the end of their night, they stayed together. Their eyes met, cobalt blue and bold teal connecting. Rouge cupped the side of Wave's face, gently tilting her head to the side, leaning in for a kiss.
But Wave gasped. She pulled back and tightened her grip on Rouge's hand. Rouge grimaced, and Wave eased, but she did not let go. Her gaze shot to the sky where they had both flown free. There, Wave gazed upon something that stripped her of speech.
As Rouge glanced up, others noticed as well. Gasps and cries exclaimed around them for a good reason. Rouge wondered if her expression matched the shock gracing Wave's features as she took in the majestic sight.
Hundreds of meteors streaked across the darkness. When one vanished, ten more took its place. Fiery ribbons crossed and faded, their trails brighter than the moon. They overpowered the stars, their brilliance captivating everyone who stood on the ground, observant of their beauty in fawning wonder.
Rouge wanted to snatch them out of the sky. They would have been like pearls on a necklace, preserving their glamour for all to see. But as she pondered, Wave's fingers brushed against her palm. She tried to squeeze them, but Wave slipped through her.
Surprised, Rouge glanced at her. Wave brought her hands together and clasped them underneath her beak. She closed her eyes, shoulders squared, back straight. Rouge didn't understand her silence and gesture, but the realization hit her like a gentle slap upside the head, and the corners of her pink lips raised.
Rouge mimicked Wave. Her fingers laced underneath her chin, and she closed only one eye. She kept the other focused on Wave, finding her like a divine statue under the meteors. Still, she needed to make the moment count, even when Wave squeaked upon noticing Rouge eyeing her.
So, Rouge made a wish, too. And like all of her wishes that she wanted to come true, she didn't reveal it. Neither did Wave, who patiently waited for her to finish.
They looked at the meteors, which started dwindling in number. From hundreds, to dozens, to single digits, they left the atmosphere in blazes of glory. When the last one crossed, slower than the rest, they witnessed its white light cut an arch through the night sky, leaving the stars jealous and in awe.
Rouge and Wave found each other again. Their fingers brushed, then laced together. Rouge finished what she had started with a soft kiss on Wave's beak. As the sightseers moved around them, their universe contained only each other, locked in warmth and starlight.
Wave parted. She smiled, her cheeks hot. She smoothed stray locks of fur down behind Rouge's ear, tickling her skin as she drew her hand away. They released in unison, and Wave stepped towards the zeppelin's doorway, not one to turn her back on anyone.
As the door opened, Wave stepped inside. She chuckled and caught the kiss Rouge blew at her. And as they said their goodbyes with a wink, Wave blew a kiss as well, shutting the door just as Rouge snatched it between her index finger and thumb.
Tapping them to her cheek, Rouge pivoted on her heels and left, her wish granted.
