"What do we do with him… We won't be able to take care of him." A female voice said, carrying her baby in a basket following a male figure who simply shrugged.
"I don't know… it's probably best to leave him at the orphanage, like you said we won't be able to take care of him, We can simply come back for him whenever we get our life back together" the man said as they continued their walk as the woman nodded.
Miles gasped as he awoke from the dream, groaning a little bit as he looked at the clock, 10 AM as he sighed, he was surely to get in trouble for waking up late… again as he groggily put on his glasses, his room was adorned with various newspapers article of the uprising of his newfound hero Sonic, and some mechanic toys and planes, which isolated him from a lot of the other kids who liked sports, action figures, etc. The cat sighed as he made his way out of the room to be met with the head of the orphanage who was tapping his foot. The headmaster was a rather old dog with a thick mustache and round glasses holding a cane in his hands.
"Ah! Sorry sir, I overslept again. Had the same bad dream again." Miles said surprised as the headmaster sighed but softly smiled.
"Miles, it's quite alright just try to do better next time, everyone else is outside why don't you join them?" the headmaster replied as he walked off to the kitchen as the young cat went to the back as there was a rather large crowd around the fence as they were yelling.
"Freak!"
"This isn't a place for you!"
"Don't get too close, he'll infect you!"
Miles naturally went to investigate trying to see what they were yelling at, and managed to use his smaller size to squeeze in to see what was causing the commotion as he saw a pair of two tails walk into the bushes as some of the kids dispersed, others staying and focusing on Miles.
"Hey look, it's the scientist! You should've been here, maybe you could've conducted a test on that freak." one of the kids said.
"I'm not a scientist, I'm a mechanic!" Miles retorted which caused the kids to laugh
"Same thing, squirt!" another kid responded shoving Miles as the head of the pack suddenly got an idea.
"How about we send this little scientist over the fence, and he could conduct studies on that creature" as the others nodded in agreement as they picked up the young cat and hurled him over the fence as Miles face planted on the grass causing his glasses to snap, causing him to tear up and attempt to grab the fence and shake it.
"Help me out guys! I can't see! I can't see!" The cat cried out as the bullies laughed and snorted running off.
From the bushes, Tails was watching the whole thing. From all the bullying he endured he got pretty good at hiding as he watched the young cat get thrown and abandoned by the other kids as he rustled the bushes.
Miles had the rustle as he visibly jumped and turned around, his curiosity causing him to walk towards the noise, Tails using the opportunity to quickly slip by him and pick up his glasses, looking at them, before retreating back into hiding before one of the kids spotted him again.
The glasses were snapped in half as he watched the cat stumble into the bushes as the fox looked with sympathy as he grabbed the cat by the arms causing him to scream.
"Help Me!" the cat cried out, starting to tear up from the shock of feeling himself get grabbed as Tails jumped as he quickly dragged the cat before the kids started to assemble again, or even worse an adult because they were usually more prone to violence especially when he tried to interact with another kid.
"R-R-Relax Okay? I'm here to help…See?" Tails tried to reassure him as he quickly pulled a pair of duct tape from his tails, and quickly "repaired" the glasses putting them back on Miles face who squinted a little as his vision came back to him.
Tails got visibly nervous, he didn't really have a chance to hide his second tail and was deathly afraid of what would happen, would he run, would he fight, or what. Miles looked at the fox and smiled, not yet noticing the extra appendage
"Thank you! Huh…" He noticed the extra tail waving about as he put together what the kids were gathered around about, causing the fox to tense up a little as he backed up slowly as the cat soon smiled.
"That's pretty cool!" Miles said with a wide smile as he extended his hand to shake, "I'm Miles by the way."
Tails looked surprised, that certainly wasn't the reaction he was expecting as he shook the cat's hands nervously chuckling "Oh, that's funny, My name is also Miles, Miles Prower." he looked thoughtful for a moment, "But you can call me Tails if that's easier! I don't really like being called Miles anyway" the fox said
The cat nodded, "Alright Tails! Wanna be friends?"
The fox's eyes widened as he nodded but he soon frowned "What about your orphanage…"wouldn't you have to go back?" he asked somberly
Miles looked thoughtful, "Why would I want to go back…I've been there for years now and no one has taken me in."
Tails looked down "Oh…okay, maybe you can stay with me then? We can be like brothers." he smiled "I don't have a family either, so having a brother would be nice!" the fox blushed, "I-If that's alright."
Miles nodded and smiled, "That would be nice!" he said excitedly as Tails' namesakes started to wag excitedly.
"Y-You mean it?" Tails asked, his voice getting excited from the hope of having someone to call family.
Miles nodded again "Yes!" as he was met with a hug which surprised him a little as he hugged the fox back.
