Sonic's Chaos

Chapter 1: Return of Robotnik

Author's Notes

This is my own take on Sonic the Hedgehog and his cast of characters. I don't own the rights of any characters in this story. This is simply my own story told through their characters.

A calm, blue ocean was suddenly torn as water was ripped up by the impossibly quick movement of feet, splashing across the sea. Only seconds later, it returned to how it was previously, the source of the disruption travelling at lightning speeds.

Sonic sprinted effortlessly across the open waves, running fast but light enough that he kept on the surface of the water. He felt the air breeze through his blue fur. Sonic was travelling the world, almost a year after he stopped Dr. Robotnik from polluting his home, Green Hill Zone, by creating a robotic empire. After thwarting his plans and helping his home recover, he decided there was so much more of Mobius to see, prompting him to become a vagabond.

Soon, land formed on the horizon. It immediately caught Sonic's eye for its familiarity to his home; rolling green hills with plenty of vegetation. Why not check it out, he thought, readjusting slightly so he was heading straight towards it. The mass grew larger and larger as Sonic approached. Soon, the sea grew shallower beneath his feet, until he was on solid ground – sand, which was promptly kicked up behind him as he ran. He must have crossed the length of the beach in a second or two before entering the sand dunes and forest behind it. As Sonic ran, he entered a large clearing, full of other people. He skidded to a halt, heels digging into the dirt, interested in meeting the residents of this island.

"How's it going?" Sonic asked with his signature confidence. "The name's Sonic, I'm -"

Suddenly, one stepped out of the group and stormed up to him.

"What are you?!" demanded the chipmunk. "One of Robotnik's machines, sent to survey us?"

Sonic stared. Robotnik? How did these people know about that when he was so far from Green Hill?

"Robotnik?" Sonic asked, still confused. "How do you guys know about Robotnik?"

Suddenly, he felt something prod him. Turning around, he saw a two-tailed squirrel, prodding him with a stick.

"He ain't made of metal," the squirrel piped up. "This guy ain't no robot."

The group suddenly looked relieved. The chipmunk stared at him.

"So, what are you, Sonic? Where are you from?"

Sonic calmed down a little, now that the atmosphere wasn't so hostile.

"I'm just a traveller, stopping by," Sonic replied. "And let me tell you, I know a thing or two about this Robotnik guy."

The chipmunk seemed interested. "Really? How so?"

"Well, the guy tried digging up where I lived to turn it into his robot empire."

"And you stopped him?" she asked, "By yourself?"

"Well, wasn't exactly hard," Sonic replied, letting his cocky nature shine. "You seen me run? I could eat that guy up for breakfast."

Another member of the crowd stepped out, a pink hedgehog, armed with a hammer. She looked at the chipmunk. "Well, Sally, maybe he could help us out?"

So that was his interrogator's name. Despite his experience, she still seemed sceptical.

"Trust me," Sonic said assuredly. "If Robotnik's giving you trouble, I'm your guy."

Sally took a step back. "Fine," she said, "If you're so sure. First, we should tell you what's been happening. Come with us."

The group led him to a hut. The two-tailed squirrel rushed to his side, shaking his hand. "Name's Ray, friend. Glad to have you here!"

As they entered the inside, they crowded around a table. Sally began speaking.

"Robotnik set up base on this island around six months ago. Since then, he's mistreated and polluted our lands, built huge factories to produce robot armies. My Kingdom was unable to match the ferocity of the machines. Now, what remain of us resist against Robotnik's total domination."

Sonic took it in. Seemed that old Eggman had upped his game since they last fought.

"There's a chemical plant near this area that we planned on sabotaging. We sent some of our agents to blow it up, but they never came back. We've scouted the area and it's still intact, so we think they've been captured."

"So is there a big plan?" Sonic piped up, "Want me to go zooming in, save all your friends?"

"That's the general idea," Sally responded, seemingly irked by Sonic's slight sarcasm. "It's risky. We could lose more members, and there are few of us as it is."

"I'll go!" Ray volunteered, "They got Tails, and us two-tailed creatures gotta look out for one another!"

"This guy's got the spirit!" Sonic exclaimed, looking around the room. "Well, who else? How about you, hammer lady?"

"Name's Amy," she replied, stifling her amusement at Sonic's attitude. "And yeah, I'll go. I've always wanted to go out on more of these."

"That's three," Sonic said, looking at Sally. "What about you, Princess? Wanna get your hands dirty?"

The room turned to face her. "Fine."

"But m'am!" a coyote piped up, wearing regal clothing. "You're the only heir to the throne! If we lose you, what do we do?"

"Then I'll leave the Freedom Fighters in your capable hands, Antoine," the Princess replied. "So then, hedgehog, you ready to go?"

The team arrive at the chemical plant, hiding outside.

"This is it, huh?" Sonic said, examining the scale of the factory. "Gotta say, it's way bigger than anything I've seen him do before. Robotnik's really upped his game."

"Not chickening out, are you?" Sally teased.

"Not a chance!" Sonic said. Truthfully, he wasn't off-put by the scale of Robotnik's new operation.

"How do we even get in?" Amy asked.

"You're kidding, right?" Sonic asked, motioning to Ray. "We have a flying squirrel right here!"

"What, you want me to carry us in?" Ray asked, staring wide-eyed at Sonic. "We'll be seen!"

"What does that matter?" Sonic said. "Won't mean a thing if we're quick enough. Trust me, we'll be in and out before you know it!"

"May I remind you the Freedom Fighters lose four recruits, including its leader, if this goes wrong?" Sally said condescendingly.

"What's the matter, Princess?" Sonic replied, teasing her back. "Not chicken, are you?"

This challenge was enough of a push for Sally to give the plan a go-ahead. The four linked hands and Ray's tails began spinning, lifting the team off the ground, heading towards the plant.

At Robotnik's headquarters, his assistant, Snively, approached Robotnik, sat in a menacing throne.

"My lord, it seems that there is some trouble at Chemical Plant 1C..." Snively said, holding a screen. "You may want to take a look."

Robotnik swivelled around in his chair, snatching the screen from Snively. Looking through his aviators, he saw a familiar nuisance; Sonic the Hedgehog, in all his cockiness, leading a band of rebels through the plant. He watched as Sonic made a mockery of his newly designed Badniks. Robotnik felt a scowl grow on his face.

"This pest!" he yelled, unleashing his annoyance, before calming slightly. "Worry not, Snively, I have planned for his return..."

"Ah, yes," Snively said, a smirk on his face, "Shall I send him out, sir?"

Ray, Amy and Sally were amazed at how easily Sonic manoeuvred around and destroyed the Badniks that had been troubling them for months. Soon enough, they came across a cage. Inside were three animals; a two-tailed fox, who Sonic assumed was the Tails that Ray was referring to, an armadillo and some kind of cyborg rabbit.

"Those must be your guys!" Sonic pointed out to Sally.

"That's them! Come on, quick!"

As they sped towards the cage, something crashed between them. When the dust emerged, the gang looked up to see a robot in his image; a silver killing machine, black eyes with glowing red pupils.

"Sonic, d'ya know this guy?" Ray asked.

"If I had to guess, Robotnik's been scheming for new ways to defeat me!" Sonic said, not at all intimidated by the imitation in front of him. "I'll show him; no matter what he sends my way, all he's getting back is a pile of scrap metal!"

Sonic curled into a ball, spinning in place, building up speed. The robot did the same, its sharpened spines turning into a blur. The two let go, crashing into and bouncing off of each other. It seemed like this guy was a little tougher than Sonic thought, but he wouldn't let that get to him. He sped into the robot, using the momentum to deliver a powerful punch to the head of the machine. It stumbled back a little, but when Sonic went back to deliver another blow, it blocked his punched. The robot grabbed Sonic by the hand and pulled him over his head, smashing him into the ground in front of its feet. Sonic grunted and noticed the machine lifting its foot up, ready to stomp him. Sonic quickly span into a ball, causing the robot's foot to reflect off of him. The robot fell backwards, giving Sonic a chance to get up. He looked back at the rest of the group.

"You guys find a way to get them out of there!" Sonic shouted, pointing at the cage. "Don't worry – I can handle this copy!"

Sally, Ray and Amy quickly went to work trying to open the cage. The robot got up and sped towards Sonic. While it was pretty fast, it wasn't fast enough to catch the blue blur off guard. Sonic leaped into the air and landed behind the robot's feet. Sonic spun his leg, kicking the robot's and knocking it onto its side. Stepping back, Sonic performed a spin-dash, slicing through the middle of the machine. Standing up and looking down at it, Sonic saw the red lights in the robot's eyes fade out. He broke off the machine's head and read some text inscribed on the side: "Mecha Sonic Mk. I".

"Heh," Sonic chuckled to himself. "So he is trying to copy me! Gonna have to try harder, Eggman!"

Robotnik watched this on his screen, enraged. That irksome nickname, "Eggman", had taunted him ever since his first encounter with that insolent little rodent.

"Blast it!" Robotnik yelled. "He destroyed my creation!" He looked back down at the screen, seeing that the pink hedgehog managed to break the cage open. "And the hostages are free!" Furious, he threw the screen to the ground, smashing it. Snively came rushing in.

"My lord?" Snively asked, keeping composed. Before he could inquire any further, Robotnik began screaming.

"FLOOD IT!" he demanded. "FLOOD THE PLANT! DESTROY THEM!"

Snively was started – deep down he was intimidated by his boss' outbursts, but he did his best not to show it. "As... as you wish, my lord."

"New recruit?" the red echidna asked Sonic as he emerged out of the cage. Before he got the chance to reply, Sally started talking for him.

"Fresh blood. He just got here today." She spoke monotonously.

"Come on, Princess," Amy spoke up, in Sonic's defence. "Give Sonic some credit; he did just save three of our finest!"

"Darn right!" Ray said, walking over with Tails. "Without him, Knothole's finest tech wizard would be a goner!" He patted Tails on the back.

"A little grim, don't you think, Ray?" Tails said, shuddering at the thought of what could have happened to him if he was never rescued. "Anyway, thank you very much, Sonic! Good to see new hope in the fight against Robotnik!"

Just as he spoke those words, the ground began shaking. At first it was hardly noticeable, until the intensity of the shaking gradually became stronger and stronger. The team looked over the edge of their platform and saw a sea of chemicals destroying everything in sight.

"It's being flooded!" the armadillo shouted.

Sally jumped into action. "Quick, Tails, take Mighty and Bunnie with you. Ray, take me, Sonic and Amy. We have to leave, now!"

As the team departed, they watched as the plant sunk into the acid below. The platform they were just standing on crumbled into the sea of chemicals mere seconds after they took off. Despite this, the team safely landed back in Knothole, to the cheers of its civilians.

"You're majesty!" Antoine exclaimed, bowing. "The mission was a success!"

"All thanks to the hedgehog here!" Mighty cheered, motioning towards Sonic. Despite the cheers following this, it seemed that Sonic was yet to win Sally over.

"So, what now, vagabond?" Sally asked him. "You gonna help us out, or stay on your travels?"

Sonic smirked. "You kidding? Missions like that? I could do it all day. Besides, you'd be hopeless without me!"

Sally let herself smile. "Good to have you here. I'm sure Tails here has a place for you to stay. Welcome to Knothole, Sonic."
