A Note from the author: Hello my dear readers on Fanfiction. Yes, I'm sure you're amazed to see this is my first Sonic the Hedgehog Fanfic in about ten years! Yes, that's right ten years! My last fic was a fanfic of the Film 'Underworld' and after that I retired from Sonic Fanfiction, and started writing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fanfics.

Also, not long after I stopped writing Sonic Fanfics, my relationship with my partner fell apart (Pretty badly) and the Sonic franchise was one of the things we enjoyed together, so it was a reminder of that time in my life.

But that was seven years ago, and things are different and a lot better too!

I think the reawakening came after watching the recent Sonic movies, I really loved the second film! Idris Elba is an outstanding Knuckles!

So, I felt inspired to write a Fanfic inspired by the Satam cartoon I watched when I was younger and some of the Sonic Comics.

Yes people, this was a plot bunny that just wouldn't leave me be! Lol!

In this story, it follows the Freedom Fighters and the war against Robotnick to take back their home and free those enslaved, and serves as a prequel to my old Sonic Fanfic 'War of the Mobians' which I am actually planning to re-write.

So now we've established the basic plot and what to expect, sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

Rise of the Freedom Fighters

Chapter One

Mobotropolis, The Golden Age

"Faster! Go Faster!"

The loud giggling of a young girl filled the halls of the Acorn Castle as well as the chuckling of a young boy.

"You wanna go faster?"

"Yes please!"

"Then let's do it, to it!"

Running through the hallways, an eight-year-old female ground squirrel had her arms around the shoulders of a nine-year-old blue hedgehog who was holding her onto his back and running at full speed.

As he ran, many servants jumped out of the way.

"Hey watch it!"

"You little rascals!"

"Sally! You're a princess!"

"You doing okay Sally?" the hedgehog called over his shoulder at his companion.

"I'm swell Sonic!" Sally giggled.

"Great! Because we're gonna really juice now!" the hedgehog replied, and he revved his feet up more and shot down a flight of stairs into the main hall of the castle.

Several servants saw them and gasped.

Sonic then saw an open door which led to the ballroom, and he zipped inside, yet as he did, his eyes widened as he saw it was filled with tables as the staff there were setting it up for a party and he was about to crash into a table full of food.

"Uh oh!" he gulped and tried to skid to a halt, Sally squealing in fear.

"Nooo!" a couple of servants jumped back, and the two children crashed into the table and the contents went flying!

Sonic and Sally could only lie there in a heap as a cream cake, some minced meat chilli and salad crashed down on them!

Some of the servants had managed to grab some of the other food before it was spilled but most of the contents was all over the floor, and over the delinquents as they tried to untangle themselves.

"Whoa man! That didn't go well!" the hedgehog commented then licked his lips as some of the minced meat was dripping down his head.

"Mmm Chilli Dog stew! My favourite!"

"Sonic!" Sally cried in dismay as she tried to wipe some cream from her face and off her dress.

"What in the name of Mobius!?" an angry male voice was heard, and the children froze in fear before looking to the doorway to see two ground squirrels, a male and female in royal robes and wearing crowns coming in followed by three adult blue hedgehogs in smart clothes.

Two of the hedgehogs were male, one with some brown bangs and the other had a brown moustache and wore glasses. The female was a lighter blue and had blonde bangs.

"The King and Queen!" hissed one of the servants and bowed, and at once the other servants bowed in respect to the ground squirrels and Sonic and Sally scrambled to their feet.

"Sally Alicia Acorn!" the male ground squirrel cried "What has happened here?"

"Sonic Maurice Hedgehog!" the female hedgehog scolded.

Both children knew they were in trouble.

"Sally, your dress!" the female ground squirrel cried as she walked over and knelt to her daughter's level "It's ruined!"

The female hedgehog also knelt to her son's level.

"Sonic!" she scolded as she tried to clean some of the food off Sonic's quills "What have your father and I told you about running in the Castle!?"

Sonic looked slightly ashamed and looked down.
"Bernadette." The moustached hedgehog said, "Don't be too hard on him."

"Charles." Bernadette sighed "This isn't the first time you know?"

"Yes brother." The other male hedgehog agreed "I'm always telling him he could cause an accident one day."

"And now it has happened!" the male ground squirrel said, "And he's put my child in danger too! And her clothes are ruined!"

"Hang on a second Max!" the male hedgehog said, "He might have been reckless but young Sally's still in one piece!"

"Look here Jules!" Max growled.

"Hey, hey, hey!" the female ground squirrel stood between the males before an argument could start.

She looked to the servants.

"Get this cleaned up, we're really sorry!"

"Thank you, Queen Alicia," one of them said before starting to clean up the mess.

Alicia nodded, then took Sally's hand, Bernadette doing the same with Sonic and they walked out of the ballroom.

Sonic looked at his parents who glared at him and at his Uncle Charles who looked slightly disappointed, and he looked over at Sally who looked worried as she was led by her equally angry parents…..

The Present, ten years later.

The loud beeping of an alarm clock pulled Sally Acorn from her slumber, opening her eyes she called out "Off!" before it went silent.

"Good morning, Sally." A monotone female voice was heard from a small handheld computer on the side table "The time is o six hundred hours."

"Thank you, Nicole." Sally breathed as she rubbed her eyes and slowly sat up pushing the sheets off herself and swinging her feet off the bed.

She ran her fingers through her short auburn hair and quickly dressed herself in her blue shorts, crop top and waistcoat as well as pulled on some knee-high blue boots.

Stepping outside, she breathed contently as a breeze blew through her brown fur.

The sun was rising over the trees, yet the breeze was cool, and the rays hadn't quite heated up the atmosphere during this late hot summer.

Sally enjoyed the summer mornings when it wasn't so hot, but still warm enough, the other reason she liked waking early was because she enjoyed the quiet before the others awoke from their slumber and the village of Knothole would be filled with the chatter of the Freedom Fighters.

Sally looked around the area.

Since the Fall of Mobotropolis, she and many others had fled to the Great Forest, many miles away so they could build a community and hide from Dr Robotnick.

Sally thought back to her dream.

The City that was her home was now a metal filled city, filled with machines and robots, all under the control and thumb of the evil man who betrayed her family and slaughtered or enslaved the people.

She was only a child when she had seen her mother killed in cold blood, her father banished to the Void, and she was forced to flee into the forest.

They had spent over ten years hiding in this very forest, at first living simply under sheets and branches or caves then building a village from scratch.

What started as just a few small huts and tents had now become a large full community.

There were many huts and tree-houses, with walkways across the high trees.

In the middle was what you could call a town centre with a flagpole, and a large tree stump as a podium.

There was an indoor and outdoor dining area, some open areas so people could play sports or do battle training and a stream ran through it so they could fetch water.

Sally smiled bitterly, she was proud at what they had achieved since they fled, yet she wished that one day she and her Freedom Fighters could take back what was stolen from them and go back to their old lives.

Stepping off her porch, Sally walked down through the village soaking in the fact it was so quiet.

Yet the quiet didn't last long as her sensitive ears picked up a sound, almost like someone was coming towards her.

She turned around and was nearly knocked off her feet as a blue blur whizzed past her then it slowed down and turned around to face her.

"Morning Sal!"

"Sonic!" Sally cried "Why did you have to do that?!"

In front of her, slowing to a jog was a slender yet strong blue hedgehog with green eyes and a smirk.

"Chillax Sal!" Sonic replied, "Just having a little fun with ya!"

Sally scoffed.

"What were you up to?" Sally asked raising an eyebrow "You do worry me when you go running through the forest outside Knothole, Robotnick has always got his Robot spies trying to find you."

"They can never find me!" Sonic said cockily "I'm too fast! I just wanted to get my steps in! And…" he held up a finger and pulled something from behind his quills.

"I wanted to bring you these!" he produced a bunch of white and pink flowers and held them out to Sally.

The ground squirrel gasped and smiled, her annoyed mood changing instantly to happiness and gratitude.

"Aww Sonic, they're beautiful!" she took the flowers and gave them a sniff inhaling their scent and she smiled at the blue hedgehog who looked very pleased with himself.

"May I ask why?" she enquired.

"Don't need a reason, Sal!" Sonic answered "I just like to bring you nice things! And, from what I remember, your birthday is today!"

Sally gasped as her eyes widened.

"My birthday..." she breathed.

"Whoa Sal!" Sonic exclaimed "How can you forget your own birthday?"

Sally blushed and looked down ashamed that she had forgotten her own birthday.

"I guess I'm just so wrapped up in this war against Robotnick…"

"You forget about yourself." Sonic ended yet he gave a sympathetic smile and patted Sally's shoulder.

"Don't worry about it!" he said "You do so much for us, you really need to think about your needs too! Dr Quack is always lecturing you on self-care as well as the care for others!"

Sally sighed and nodded.

"You're right Sonic." She said placing a hand on his then looked up with a smile.

"I'll put these in my hut and then we'll get the day started, Rotor will be wanting to speak to us before breakfast."

"No worries, Sal!" Sonic winked "You do that, I might go and see if Big's caught any fish this morning."

"Thank you, Sonic." Sally smiled again then turned towards her hut, she watched Sonic shoot off up the stream towards the main river in the Forest.

She couldn't believe how ten years had passed, since they were just children, parentless and on the run in the first few years of the war, but now as young adults, she was the leader of the Freedom Fighters, and Sonic was her second-in-command.

She sniffed the flowers and smiled at how generous Sonic was to her, he was such a loving friend, even if his reckless behaviour did annoy and worry her, but he was the kindest, bravest, and most thoughtful hedgehog.

Finding a vase, she placed her flowers in it, and picked up Nicole from her bedside table, ready to start the day and plan another mission.

And that's the first chapter!

I hope you enjoyed it!

Poor Sally, forgetting her own birthday, well, when you spend some much time being a leader and taking care of the needs of others, you sometimes forget your own.
