Hey! My name's Roxy Goth and this is my first fanfiction for Sonic. Hope you enjoy. I'm considering doing some others if this one gets enough views.
Spoilers for Sonic 2!
This takes place during the temple flooding scene.
I do not own Sonic - or indeed ANY Sega characters - I just want to try writing them.

His chest felt like it was on fire. Must keep hold of breath, must not exhale -
Water stung his nose and he coughed. No! What an idiot! Water flooded his senses and Knuckles felt his eyes close...
A slight ripple in the water alerted Knuckles to the presence of someone or more likely something near him. Looking to his left, the echidna saw the blue hedgehog coming towards him. Resting next to Knuckles the hedgehog nodded and held his fingers up, signalling they should try to push the pillar currently trapping the echidna of off him at the count of three. Knuckles nodded to show he'd understood.
Together they lifted the pillar and, as soon as he was able, Knuckles swam upwards, focused only on getting some air into his lungs. Up on the surface he gasped for air and looked round. No sign of Doctor Robotnik or the Master Emerald. Knuckles growled and turned to...nothing.
The echidna frowned. Where was the blue hedgehog? A cold feeling that couldn't be attributed to the water gripped him and he dived back down. Sure enough there was the blue hedgehog on the floor nearly completely passed out. Knuckles grabbed his hand and pulled him up to the surface. Once they were both up the hedgehog started breathing again - much to Knuckles's relief - however other than that he showed no signs of life.
Knuckles snarled as water went up his nose again and he realised the environment was becoming dangerous. His best course of action was to turn on his back - essentially tucking the hedgehog under his arm - and swim backward against the tide. Not very practical but it was more important to keep the other Mobian breathing than anything else at the moment.
Fighting against the waves, Knuckles had the sand in sight. That would be a safe place for them both to rest, c'mon - c'mon, nearly there - nearly there -
Suddenly a much bigger wave scooped the two of them up and crashed them against the beach, Knuckles felt the air being knocked out of him as the sand went up his nose.
Coughing, Knuckles was on his feet in an instance. He panicked upon realising the hedgehog had slipped out his grasp somewhere along the way. He looked about, relief flooding him when he saw the blue form on the sand a few feet away.
Walking over purposely, Knuckles grabbed the blue hedgehog by his ankles and pulled him completely clear of the water. When he was sure the hedgehog was no longer at risk of drowning Knuckles dropped him on the beach and stood away. Feeling water clog his fur down the echidna shook himself a few times. He wiped the water of his snout, tasting the salt water for the first time. He spat and shook his head a few times...that was disgusting.
He looked round hoping against all hope that he might see Robotnik somewhere...no...no, he'd gone. Gone with the emerald and, with it, unstoppable power.
Knuckles swallowed hard. He'd failed. Failed himself, failed his tribe...failed his father. His father -!
With that thought Knuckles collapsed to the sand and bit back a sob. No, he would not cry, he refused to cry. Crying was a weakness that he could not afford to show. As the familiar metallic taste of blood edged into his mouth from where he'd bitten the inside of his cheek he forced himself to think. Wait for the blue hedgehog to wake up and then go from there. Until then he would think. Think and reflect.
With that Knuckles huddled in on himself and stared out across the ocean.
