Prologue: Mobius
Mobius.
A world of beauty and danger, filled to the brim with strange magic and advanced technology, the denizens of this planet have weathered many a crisis as the planet's champions and monsters raged against one another. Over the past few years, two figures have remained unyieldingly present throughout every conflict.
Sonic the Hedgehog: The blue blur, savior of Mobius many times over, eater of chili-dogs. Sonic is a name known by nearly every person on the planet. Brash, hot-headed, and at times a bit naive, but also brave, good-natured, and unflinching in his willingness to do the right-thing. Gifted with incredible speed and a myriad of friends and allies Sonic has protected his planet and his people for many years, primarily from one man.
Dr Ivo Robotnik: Eggman. A genius inventor with an unbreakable ambition to rule over the planet, though his ambitions have been dashed time again by his hated nemesis, Eggman relentlessly marches forward, unwilling to yield to those who would deny him his goals. His is a name hated by many, his face unmistakable, seeing as how he seems to be the only one of his kind on the whole of the planet. His machines are a mark on the mind of every mobian to survive his plans, and in the wake of two of his most heinous crimes to date, the people of Mobius have more reason to fear him now more than ever.
The first of his plans, a war on a planet-wide scale, spearheaded by a mercenary wielding a gem of impossible power. Very nearly did the mobians push back Eggman's armies, with the help of not only a sonic from a different dimension, but a new hero, born from the flames of war.
The second of Eggman's crimes was a plague, a swarm of nanomachines that transformed all organic matter into living metal. Those affected were transformed into mindless machines, puppets controlled first by Eggman, then by the Zeti, a strange group of creatures hailing from a strange continent in the skies of Mobius known as the lost hex. Only through an alliance between Eggman and Sonic was the plagued purged from the planet.
After these events, the people of Mobius believed for a time that the storm had passed, and perhaps that they would be able to return to their normal lives.
But fate, it seems, has other plans.
Months after the plague, strange storms wracked seven places across the planet, bringing with them long-lost artifacts known as the chaos emeralds. Disappearing off the face of the earth after the doctor attempted to harness the negative energy of the planet's life force. Sonic and company believed the emeralds to be gone for good, but now, as the aptly named 'chaos storms' wrack the planet, the emeralds return to the planet, bringing with them the calamitous power they contain.
But these storms have not brought only the emeralds with them.
And here, our story begins, in the wake of chaos storm, a young man lies unconscious, unaware that the strange glowing gem he had found would tie his fate to another world.

Hello all!
It's been a minute since I've been able to post, this idea has been rattling around in my head for a while. I've been settling in after a move and a serious bout of procrastination. The Outsider is gonna take a backseat for now to this story and Hiraeth, expect the next chapter of Hiraeth, after a few chapters of this story.
Chaos Running takes place in the series of comics that followed the release of Sonic Forces, with the starting point happening after Belle the Tinkerer's arc but before the Imposter syndrome arc. With that being said, I'm going to take a few liberties with the canon to glue together a comprehensive story, and hopefully what comes out looks somewhat decent.
