'When you've done everything possible, where do you go from there?'
The Sapphire Dragon had won the war. An act of self sacrifice against Robotnik, by clawing out his own chest, the corrupted bright crimson, blood red Power Rock had caused the filthy Human to die inside his own body. But his end was not in vane, and now he had the Deep Power Stones, as a new power source and he'd used that power to rebuild Mobotropolis, and rise it to the skies to join with the other Floating Cities. Now true peace reigned, but that was six months ago, and the mighty Sapphire Dragon was left wondering if there was anything left for him in this world. The mighty defender had nothing left to fight. All was well, but unfortunately, he was not.

'How can living be so difficult, when dying is so easy?'
The multiverse. Multiple worlds and dimensions existing in the Sonic The Hedgehog universe. This was why there was always a Sonic, a Tails and an Eggman in each world, each dimension. The others varied between the worlds, some like Shadow and Knuckles, appearing in more then one. Ring inter-dimensional portals would randomly open between the worlds, allowing travel between them, hence Sonic had travelled to other worlds and other Sonic's had come to his. Classic Sonic, for example.
Problems with alternate 'Sonics' had left them very wary of visitors. So during a yet another fight with Eggman, there was a bad storm, but it was going Sonic's way and Eggman retreated due to bad weather. Time for him and his friends to leave. They had heard nothing of the portals in months, but suddenly one open up right among them, but was struck by lightning. There was an enormousflash of white light, and the irritating ring suddenly appeared as someone came flying through the air, from that point, and landing hard on the ground. A Blue Hedgehog. Sonic rolled his eyes. Another counterpart. But this Blue Hedgehog, who appeared larger then average, was extremely frightened upon seeing lightning storm, and quickly vanished into the night. Very quickly. Sonic had never seen anything move so fast, as he himself was forced to retreat because of the weather.
The following morning, all was quiet but there was no sign of the counterpart. This was unusual. Normally, when one of Sonic's counterparts arrive, there was always constant noise everywhere of the sound barrier being broken, as they constantly traveled all over. But this time, there was nothing. Silence. It's like the counterpart just vanished into thin air. Everyone was confused. This had never happened before. Where was he?
The counterpart looked around. He'd went to ground during the night and now it was morning, he was met with a sight of utter astonishment. He was unable to believe his eyes. The world around him was completely normal. He hadn't seen it like this in almost twenty years. Saffie, as he was now known, was extremely confused and scared. The last thing he remembered before the storm, was that he was traveling normally, and then suddenly being surrounded by a deep purple portal. It was large and circular, a white ring, with a purple swirling centre, and a very foreboding exit. It came out of nowhere, which he couldn't avoid, and was forced to travel through it.
Realising his unusually large stature, he immediately acquires a very large black cloak to hide himself, and desperately tried to disappear into the crowd, but standing head and shoulders above everyone didn't help matters. He frowned as he looked around, trying to wonder where he was. Definitely a new location. But not on his home-planet. That was completely devastated by Robotnik. Blacken and scarred. Saffie managed to save his people but lost the planet. Now both safe, everyone living in the Floating Cities high above the planet. All they needed now was time to heal. He, as the planet's defender, was no longer needed anymore, and was finding the whole task rather tedious. He was a professional soldier. He was used to fighting wars.
His name was Saffie. He smirked. Yes, it was a stupid name for a highly experienced soldier like himself but it was a simple shortening of his title and he rather liked it, despite the silliness. But then he grumbled.
The peacekeeping duties back home had worn very thin on him. Extremely thin. In fact, he found it so boring that he'd been desperate for something, anything to happen. He'd been driving absolutely everyone crazy. The Mutant Movement outright failing to control the mad house. Sally, on the other hand, hadn't really helped. She'd had her own people and city to run, Mobotropolis, and had very little time for him, plus she was moving on and he wasn't. He couldn't move on. Always the soldier, always the hero, and Saffie couldn't change that. Therefore all was not well between them, and so he'd figured that him disappearing for a while would be a good thing for everyone. Well, he'd got his wish, and now he'd been left extremely intrigued. He sighed.
'So, a new planet?' He wondered. But his frowned deepened. He sniffed the air. It smelled like home. It smelled like Mobius, just before the war. He had a vague memory of it, but the smell was unmistakable. What? He heaved. If this wasn't a new planet, then there was only one possible explanation. A new dimension. He'd heard a friend back home, speak of them, but never believed the stories.
Saffie gulped. He did now and knew that that could mean anything was possible. He slowly moved his way through the town he was in, which later turned out to the city of Westopolis. He desperately tried not to draw attention to himself, staying quiet and in the background. Up to now, it had worked. Nobody, or at least, very few people, had noticed his presence. As he explored, he suddenly heard a noise, of what sounded like a fight, in the main square of the city. Going to investigate, the sight that greeted him, gobsmacked him into stunned silence, that routed him to the spot. His jaw dropped.
A large mechanical spider being ridden by an ugly Human was being attacked by a Blue Hedgehog and a two tailed Fox, who, quite frankly, were easily winning the fight. The fight was brutal and Saffie was impressed at the coronation between the Fox and the Hedgehog, but it was to the Hedgehog was where Saffie found his eyes falling. He was looking at...himself.
He recognised everything. The Blue Hedgehog's speed, maneuvers, attitude, and sheer daredevil-ness. He was a stunning Hedgehog with royal blue fur that covers most of his body, peach on his arms, muzzle and belly, and big emerald-green eyes. He had small, triangular ears on the top of his head, six long quills on the back of his head, two spines protruding from his back behind his shoulders, and a short tail. Saffie's eyes then fell on the Fox. He recognised him too. A very young, Fox cub with a unique mutation of two tails instead of one. He had mostly yellow-orange fur with white fur around his muzzle, front torso, and the tips of his tails. He had bright blue eyes. He wore white gloves and red shoes with white toes.
He knew who they were. Sonic, aka himself, and Tails, though both looking significantly younger then him. At least ten years. Saffie frowned. This whole new dimension idea was becoming more and more plausible. He watched in awe, as they very quickly disposed of the Human in his machine. Saffie, knew him to. Robotnik, but a different Robotnik to the pure evil devil reincarnated that he got. This Robotnik, of whom his counterpart constantly called 'Eggman', seemed to be able to be negotiated with. He took his defeat with honour and left the battlefield without any fuss.
Saffie heaved. That was the sort of ending with the Human he would have preferred. He'd killed his Robotnik. He'd had no choice. The Human forced him into a kill or be killed death match, which ended with Saffie taking was own life, killing Robotnik, and acquiring the Deep Power Stones as his source of power. He sighed, as he felt the power in his chest. The stones had felt strange ever since his arrival here.
As the Human left defeated, suddenly Sonic and Tails are surrounded by their friends. An Echidna, a Cat, a Rabbit, a Bat, A Crocodile, a Chameleon, a Bee and to Saffie's total amazement, a further three Hedgehogs, including one female, which blew his brain. He stared at her, from his hiding place. He'd never seen a female Hedgehog before. He had his uncle were the last of their kind, until Uncle Chuck got robotised and then permanently rendered to a computer. Then Charlie showed but never a female. She was beautiful but didn't understand why his counterpart paid so little attention to her, until he witnessed just how annoying she was, then he understood. He rolled his eyes.
Saffie recognised none of the other friends, though he could feel the power coming from them. Did some of them have superpowers too? Saffie gulped. He counterpart was incredibly lucky. He fought his Robotnik alone, the only creature born on the entire planet with superpowers. Here, with multiply beings with superpowers, Saffie now understood, why everything seemed normal. Eggman, simply wasn't a threat, not to the same extent his Robotnik was. He had the Freedom Fighters back at home, but none of them had powers. Nobody understood him. Now he knew why that Eggman had never got very far with his attacks against this group. What Saffie would have given for friends like that. But he had to work with what he had, so he didn't have a choice. Global domination was just not on the cards in this dimension. Though Saffie suspected that it might happen in the future at some point, or at least a serious attempt of one. He smirked. Nothing these super-powered beings couldn't handle.
He sighed as he realisedthat himself, aka Sonic, Tails and Robotnik, were all fixed points in the multiverse. Everything else including their relationship to each other changed from one dimension to the next. The Hero, The Villain, and The Sidekick. Three points on the same triangle, and everything else revolved around it. He only had to compare his own dimension with this one to see how they could differ. He had a sidekick, but it wasn't really Tails. He spent far more time with Rotor, and yet the Fox was stuck to his counterpart's side like glue, being the engineer, and yet Saffie suspected that was how it should be.
Saffie watched Sonic and his friends. They seemed to be milling around in confusion. But Sonic was dumbfounded. According to Tails, his counterpart was still in this dimension, but the fact he was a no show for the fight against Eggman in the middle of the city, somewhere nice and noisy, completely confused everyone. It was seriously out-of-character. Any previous visits of his counterparts in the past, wouldn't have been able to resist a fight against a Robotnik, so why the extremely weird no show? Nobody understood, as Saffie continued to watch them move off, leaving him far behind.
As they left, Saffie noticed that one of the Hedgehog's, a male, looked straight in his direction. His crimson red eyes boring into him. Saffie looked back at him. He gulped. The Hedgehog was a Black with red stripes, and had a power within him that was unmistakable. Evil, and yet he stood side-by-side with his counterpart, a good guy. Saffie frowned.
'Your a bad guy.' He gasped in his thought, but then his frown deepened. 'But yet you stand with the hero. Why?' He wondered. Then after several seconds, he moved off with the others. Saffie sighed with relief. There were two reasons why Saffie didn't get involved in the battle. One, he was too shocked by the whole situation and two, years of experience in fighting wars had taught him to read a fight before charging in. Considering that this fight was already lost by Eggman, by the time he arrived, there was no reason to expend calories joining in.
For the rest of the day, Saffie kept to himself, and it was only at night, did he move on. With excellent night vision, this wasn't a problem. He wasn't keen on being found by Sonic and his friends. He didn't fear them, but suspected that they would just throw him back to his own dimension, but Saffie was keen to explore. His own dimension was rather boring at the moment and he didn't want to go back, well, not at the moment. He was sure the Mutant Movement could survive without him for a while. Robotnik and Snively were gone, and the planet was safe.
At nightfall, he left the city behind, traveling fast but as quietly as possible. He hunkered down during the day, and traveled at night. Unfortunately, his back was beginning to hurt so he soon found a lake and in the dead of night, he went flying. Saffie removed his cloak and ensuring that he was alone, he opened his mighty Blue wings, took off and soared. He was the Sapphire Dragon. His title, and incredibly proud of it, he was too. It carried weight, it carried majesty but it wasn't royal, which really suited him. He used to be known as 'Lordship', but even that had long since moved on. Gone. Six months on from his final fight with his Robotnik, the death match that ended in self sacrifice, and nowadays everyone back home called him, Saffie. 'Sonic' as a name for him rarely, if ever, surfaced but times had been changing, especially back home, he had felt it.
He stretched and lengthened his wings and tail, them feeling much better. They had been aching from being folded back all day. Finally, he landed and stood on the edge of the lake and survey the beautiful warm night. The moonlight shone down on the water shimmering as Saffie sighed. This place was incredible and he was keen to explore but was also frightened by the reception he'd get. He was so different to his counterpart, that he didn't fancy the aggression.
Saffie was tall and extremely well built, with deep muscles across his back, arms, legs and torso. In the darkness, the true spender of his stature couldn't really be seen. Part Hedgehog, Part Dragon. He was wearing black jeans, t-shirt, rock boots but no gloves. He possessed two sets of wings (one main pair, extremely large and powerful, and a shape similar to a bat, and one smaller pair at the top of his tail). The first pair allows him to do a vertical takeoff. Behind that was a set of smaller wings that aid in gliding. At the end of his tail, he had two tail fins that aided in steering and stability. He was incredibly maneuverable in the air and extremely fast. In the sky, was now where Saffie's speed truly lay.
Despite the mis-mash, he looked absolutely stunning. He stretched his enormous ten metrewings and adjusted his secondary wings, which were used for balance. He absolutely loved flying but now was not the time. The people of this dimension had not witnessed anything like him before and he didn't want to cause panic. He folded away the mighty wings and sighed. He looked down at his hand and on one of his finger was a ring. The Royal Seal of Acorn. Sally had given her father's ring to him as a good luck charm for the final battle against Snively and there it was, still moulded onto his very finger. It would never come off again. Saffie thoughts had turned to Sally. As much as he loved her, he'd been getting the feeling that she could do better then him. She was getting to the point in her life, of settling down and having a family. Normal stuff, but for Saffie, anything but.
Saffie may have been part Hedgehog, part Dragon, but he was also a Cyborg and had long since lost his ability to breed. He was eighty percent robotisedwith solid Adamantium, a hundred percent mutant and now had the Deep Power Stones for a heart and power source. He was almost indestructible but no use as a potential mate. All he could do was protect Sally. He couldn't give her what she nowadays so desperately wanted and it had caused several arguments between them. They were not married. Saffie had backed out, right at the very last minute. He didn't believe it was fair to tie Sally down to him, when he just couldn't provide for her, and he loved her so much that he was willing to let her go. Unfortunately, Sally didn't see it that way, and his choice left an enormous rift between them.
But Saffie stood by it. He'd could potentially live forever. Did he have the right to ask her to give up everything, her life, her family, to be with him, only to grow old and die? Saffie thought not, but Sally was adamant that that was her choice. But Saffie wanted her to be happy with a proper male, who could give her a child. She'd be such a good mother, and he felt she should be given the chance.
But as he was deep in thought, Saffie suddenly realisedhe wasn't alone. Suddenly he looked up in the darkness, to see, what he believed was the strangest creature in his life. All alone, like him. Saffie was frightened at first until he felt the energy coming off the creature and it put him at ease, then deep curiosity got the better of him. The creature was small, floating in mid-air and spherical in shape. It had three tentacles hanging out of bottom, which the creature seemed to used to move itself through the air. Saffie could tell that it possessed a mysterious power that they allow individuals to harness. It was giving off a strange light. Cyan in colour, it was an alien, lost on a unknown planet. Saffie sighed. That sounded familiar. He didn't fear the creature and decided that it shouldn't fear him either.
It moved towards Saffie. The Sapphire Dragon stood there cool, calm and completely still as the creature wasn't looking where it was going, bumped right into the him, in the middle of his torso. It ricocheted off of him, and looked somewhat confused. Saffie giggled, the creature seemed alright but if he was going to talk to it, he might as well think of a name for it, still having no idea what it was. He grinned.
"Hey, Squidling. Are you alright?" He asked the bemused creature. It stared at him in the darkness.
[Yes, I'm fine, thank you.] He said sternly. Saffie stared. The creature's language sounded extremely bizarre to his ears and yet he understood every word with no trouble whatsoever. He raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, ok. Are you lost? Can I help?" He asked. His deep melodious voice was warm and pleasant. They were automatic questions for him to ask, he was a Hero after all. The Wisp looked at him. There are at least eight known individual Wisp types, each with their own unique ability, but Saffie didn't know this. It rose into the air and was now level with the mighty Blue Dragon's eye line. It's own eyes widened and bowed to a somewhat shocked Saffie. He blinked. The Wisp looked incredibly honoured.
[The Sapphire Dragon, the greatest of them all.] It announced proudly. But Saffie gulped.
"Greatest? What do you mean..." He stammered, but before he could finished, the Wisp cut across him, grabbing both his hands, looking not surprised at all that Saffie could understand him. But it looked very panicked. It heaved.
[Lordship. King. This planet was in danger and only you have the power to save it.] He stammered. [Please do what you must, whatever the cost.]He grilled. Saffie nodded, but he gulped again.
"But how? What am I meant to do?" He desperately asked, the Wisp wasn't giving him any specifics. Helping wasn't an issue, if he could, then he would, but directions would be useful. He'd been desperate for new adventure for a some time now, and this was certainly classed as that. Then it suddenly dawned on him. He growled. "Hey." He spat. "I'm not a King. I've had this argument back home." He hissed. But the Wisp raised an eyebrow. He sniggered.
[Very humble, but you are the King. The greatest 'Sonic' of them all.] He added. Now Saffie was dumbfounded. Was this Wisp putting him in higher regard then Sonic, his counterpart? He stared in silence, but before he could say anything further, the Wisp began to leave, rather quickly. Saffie ran after it. He panted.
"Hey, Squidling, wait!" He called. "What do you mean?" He asked again, but the Wisp rounded on him, forcing him to stop. He glared at him.
[Save them!] It pleaded, and then in the blink of an eye, it was gone, leaving Saffie with more questions then answers.
