Y'all are so sweet with how Edward and Bella's reunion went. I thought I'd get way mor blowback from that. Lol the day is still young though;)
Anyways, this chapter is just some fun, fluff. Little history and adventure around Charleston. I will definitely have some pictures on Facebook in the groups(the no rules twilight fan fiction group, and it all started with twilight), so go check them out. They give a lot of background and visual aid to the story. Not everyone has seen Charleston for themselves, so I like to give y'all a glimpse of our city.
Enjoy!
Chapter 6 - Tour
BPOV
The next day, I call Jasper and tell him we're going around town. I drive over to his hotel, pick him up, and take him to our first stop.
Once I park the car and we get out, he looks around trying to figure it out.
"What is this place?" He asks as we start walking down the street.
"This, my dear friend, is the old Charleston Market." I tell him as I do my best exaggerated Vanna White impression. "The market itself was established in the 1700's. This is where everyone from plantations and farms would come to sell their goods."
We spent a couple hours walking through the market, browsing, buying some souvenirs. We stopped at one area where there were the most amazing smelling candles, and I'd resisted when I first came through here a few days ago. But I can't anymore. They're called Charleston Candle Works. These are some of my most favorite candles, ever. The scents are soothing, calming, and not your run of the mill smells. They're soy candles, so they're more potent and longer lasting scents than regular candles. They're wonderful, and they feel like home. Almost like a hug.
"Jazz, smell this." I tell him as I hold my favorite scent out to him. It's got a rich woody oak and musk scent, along with some herbs and a hint of orange.
"That's dangerous to ever say to me." He laughs and takes a whiff of the candle. "Holy hell, what is that?" His eyes literally rolled back in his head.
Yep, that's how good it is.
"It's called Avenue of Oaks. This is the one that I've always loved and I can never get enough of it." I tell him, and start thinking. Then I turn to the sales lady. "Can I get a case of these?" I ask, because I'm seriously going to ship these back to L.A. so I've got something that reminds me of home.
"You sure can! We've also got these online if you want to order more." The lady, Carmen, says in a very sweet voice.
YES!
She goes and finds a case of candles from behind the counter, and it's about six of them. Which will be a good start. And now that I know they're online, I can order more!
Score!
"Dude, did you just ask for a whole case?" Jasper asks in a shocked voice.
I swing around a look at him. "You're damn right I did. These are my all time favorite. This is the smell of southern hospitality, sir." I snark back at him and he just rolls his eyes.
"True, but geez. These are probably some of the best smelling candles I've ever smelled. And I'm not really into the froo-froo smelling shit. But these are amazing. Have you smelled this one?" He held up the Lowcountry Christmas candle and I took a whiff. The smells of fresh cut trees like fir, cypress and bay laurel, mixed with mint, incense and a little patchouli. It reminds me of having just decorated the Christmas tree. Mmmmm that brings back memories of holiday fun we used to have. I nod at him and just smile. "If this is what Lowcountry Christmas smells like, then I'm coming back then. This is fantastic. I'm going to have to get some of these, myself. I know Rose will love some, too."
I just laugh and go through some more of the candles and help him pick some out for Rose. I tell him she'll probably like the Apple Maple Bourbon, the Summerville Rain and Caribbean Teakwood. So he grabs those along with his and we complete our purchases. I tell the lady I'll pick up the case of candles when I come back through to leave. She said it was no problem and she'd store them behind the counter with my name on them.
We continue with our journey and find some fun stuff along the way. Jasper stopped when he saw the ladies making the sweetgrass baskets. He was mesmerized by it. He grabbed one for his sister because Rose is secretly a basket hoarder. She loves her some baskets.
Once we reached the end of the market, Jasper was looking around and saw the U.S. customs building to the right, and then he saw the cruise ship that was coming in to dock right across the road.
"Woah, that's a big ass ship." Jasper says, slack-jawed. He's never seen a cruise ship up close before.
"Yep, that's where they usually load and unload. Oooo! If we hurry, we can make it before the crowd gets off the ship. Come on!" I tell him as I drag him down the street and take a right.
We cross the street and he looks confused. "Bells, where exactly is it that we're going?" He asks.
"You'll see…" I say in a sing-song voice as I see my destination in sight.
"Wait, what is it?" He asks as we walk up to the little restaurant on the water.
Literally, it's sitting on the water.
"This," I motion to one of my favorite spots to eat. "is Fleet Landing. Let's go! I'm starving!" I say as I drag him up to the front doors.
Walking in, we request a table and the lady at the front door said we made it just in time to beat the boat rush.
Yay!
This is a hotspot for the people that get on and off the cruise ships, and if you don't hit this place at the right time, you'll be waiting for, a minimum, an hour and a half.
So worth the wait, though.
We were seated out on the balcony where we were literally sitting over the water, and we ordered a couple of appetizers and some drinks. It's really peaceful out here.
"So, now that I've got you alone…" I start and raise an eyebrow at him. "Alice?"
He gets a sheepish look on his face, that I don't think I've seen from him, probably ever.
"Well… I'm not sure. We really hit it off last night. I was shocked as hell when I first saw her. Like, I felt smacked in the face with someone that should be in my life. I'm not sure in what capacity… I really like her, though." He tells me with a goofy smile on his face.
I laugh at this and just shake my head. "Jazz, she's a great girl. But I will tell you this. I'm not gonna get in the middle of it, but if you hurt her, I know pig farmers around these parts…" I give him a pointed look so he knows I'm not fucking around.
He pales a little at that. "I don't plan on hurting her. I'm not sure how we'll work it out. We want to try just talking for now. Getting to know each other. She said she's trying to make it out to the big city with her line. If she's able to, then we'd be closer to each other. We're just playing it by ear right now."
I nod and automatically regret asking my next question. "Did you take her back to your room last night?"
He leans down and smacks his head against the table. "Kill me now…" He mutters into the table. When he sits back up, he sighs and says, "Yes, I did. But it wasn't as raunchy and deplorable as you'd like to think. We spent a lot of time talking. But yes, we did end up having sex. I really hope we have a chance to make things work."
The waitress brings over our apps. "Stuffed hush puppies and baked spinach and artichoke dip. Enjoy y'all!"
The smells from the apps in front of us are so enticing and mouth-watering.
Jasper grabs a hush puppy and dives straight in and moans. "Oh-mah-gah…" he says around his mouthful of hush puppy, then swallows it. "Holy shit, that's GOOD! Jesus, I'm going back to L.A. ten pounds heavier." He says, then pops the other half of the hush puppy in his mouth. "But so worth it!"
I just laugh at him and take my own bite of the fried yumminess that's filled with lobster, shrimp, leeks and corn.
It's absolutely delicious.
Then we scoop into the spinach and artichoke dip that's warm, gooey and pretty delightful, too.
"This is our southern roots here in Charleston. Seafood, stuffed and/or fried." I laugh and go on. "And spinach and artichoke dip is like a staple in most households around here."
"I can understand why you'd always say you missed your southern food." He said, stuffing another hush puppy in his mouth. "So, I told you about Alice. Your turn." I just stare at him, confused. "Edward?"
I roll my eyes at that. "You know about Edward. I told y'all we dated before I came to L.A. We fought over some stupid shit and broke up. I never thought I'd see him again, especially not last night. But, I guess I should have expected it at some point from Alice. She's always in someone's business and trying to be a matchmaker. Or a fixer. But the fact that she hadn't setup a meeting between me and Edward yet, should have been a red flag when I called her the other day."
The waitress came back by and dropped off our entrees.
"Fried green tomato BLT, and Charleston shrimp and grits." She said and brought more drinks over as well.
I waited to see Jasper's reaction to real deal shrimp and grits. He's never had anything like this before, and he had asked what I'd recommend. Anyone visiting the area has to try shrimp and grits. That's just an unwritten rule around here.
Snatching a fry off my plate, which are killer fries too, I watch him as he takes a hesitant bite.
Once he tastes that first bite, his eyes widen and looks up at me, completely shocked, then proceeds to start shoveling the stuff in his face.
I start laughing my ass off. "Jasper, slow down! You're gonna make yourself sick."
He sits back up straight, and grabs his drink and takes a sip. "Sorry." He says sheepishly. "But God damn it, that's just… I have no words for how good it is." He goes back in for more food as I pick up my fried green tomato BLT and start scarfing it down, myself. Which is incredible, by the way. "So, what else with Edward? I know you'd said you guys dated and all, but what happened with you two last night?"
Wiping my mouth, I try to figure it out myself.
"I'm not sure, really. There's some things we both didn't know about when I left. And he feels somewhat responsible for the James thing. Which is ridiculous. But he wants to sit down this week before I leave and talk. I don't know what's gonna happen with the two of us. I do miss him more than I thought."
Jasper gives me a sad smile as he continues eating. "Do you want something to happen between the two of you? I mean, watching you guys last night? Damn Bella."
I look at him, confused. "What do you mean?"
He smirked and said, "You two were… something else. You could tell from looking at him that he still cared about you. He looked like he wanted to take care of you, like he'd take a bullet for you. And when you two sang that song together? Bells, that man still loves you. That was abundantly clear from how he acted towards you."
I mean… I could tell he felt something still. I didn't know if it was friendship or otherwise. But, love? I don't know about that.
"I don't know, Jazz. We both said some pretty harsh, shitty things to each other before I left. And I forgive him for the things he said. I understood that he wanted to do the Coast Guard thing, and he got mad that I wanted to go off and be a singer. I got mad that he wanted me to stay while he was off in the Coast Guard, traveling and seeing other places. I felt like he wanted to hold me back while he did his thing. I found out last night that he thought I wasn't thinking long term for our relationship." I shrug and still wonder how things would've worked out had we talked it out.
"Shit happens, Bells. This may be the opportunity to talk it out with him and see if there would be anything still between you two, in the long run." Jasper says in his sage wisdom voice.
One thing I've learned about Jasper Hale since I've known him, is that he's very in tuned with people and he can be very wise and give some pretty great advice.
"We'll see. I mean, we'd still be on opposite sides of the country. I don't know if… I don't know. I'm hoping when I meet up with him again that I can figure out some more details of what maybe could be." I say as I look down at the sandwich in my hands.
"Well, I'm just saying, don't discount him or where things could go. Just like with Alice, it's very possible that he'd be willing to come to L.A. to be with you. And who knows? Maybe that singing duo could become something, too." He smirks as he steals one of my fries and shoves it in his mouth. "God damn, is everything here fucking delicious? I need to buy a house here and come back on a regular basis just for the food."
I laugh and smack his hand from his next attempt to steal a fry. "Hey! Watch your reach, Hale."
He just narrows his eyes and flags down the waitress and asks for a small order of fries for himself.
Good choice, my friend.
We continue eating and enjoying the beautiful Atlantic view. When we're done with our meal, we walk it off on our way back through the market. We pick up the candles and head back to the car. I take him through town, down to the battery and we walk around Battery Park and I tell him about some of the homes here, facing the water.
"Can you imagine living in one of these homes?" He asks in awe as he takes in the historic, beautiful homes.
"I've always wanted to, for as long as I can remember. But, as I was growing up, I always heard about Hurricane Hugo and the mass damage it caused, and I cringe at buying a historic house like these and having a hurricane come through again and just decimating it. I'd be heartbroken. But, I'd still love to have one, though." I tell him as we watch some of the workers coming through and restoring one of the beautiful homes on this strip. "You'll see this a lot around here, too. Restoration is huge for people wanting to keep the history of this town intact."
"That's impressive, to me. With how old this city is, and all of the historic homes we've seen, I can't imagine what all would go in to saving that history. I can definitely appreciate what they're doing." He says as we take in what they're working on and can't help but hope the outcome will be as beautiful as the homes around it.
"Alright, one more place before I let you call Alice for another evening with her…" I tease as we walk back to the car.
He whips his head around and looks at me, shocked. "What?"
"Oh don't give me that. I know you wanna see her again before you leave." I tell him as I slide into the driver seat.
He just stays quiet as we drive off to our next stop.
We spend a little while in the car as I take him over the bridge and into Mount Pleasant.
Taking the turn to our destination, I wait for his reaction.
"Oh wow… What…" He asks in awe of the view in front of him.
"This, currently, is the Avenue of Oaks. It actually takes you to Boone Hall Plantation." I tell him, taking in the absolutely gorgeous canopy of oak trees that are dripping with Spanish moss, covering the road leading up to main building. "Stunning, isn't it?"
"Holy crap…" I don't think he has words for it. And a lot of times, no one does when they see it for the first time.
I take him around the plantation and he learns some of the history of the place.
He almost squealed like a girl when I told him Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively were married here.
Jasper loves him some Blake Lively.
I'm pretty partial to Ryan, myself.
Just sayin.
"This place is incredible, Bella. You see these things in tv and movies, but to see it in person in just breathtaking." Jasper says as we walk back around the front with his hands in his pockets.
"It is. A lot of people give us grief in the south about plantations and still having them. But, my thing is; you can't erase history, and you can't ignore it. It's still there, it's still something you learn from. Every country had it's time of tragic history. This one is no different. So, to have a place where you can go to learn about how they lived back then, is important. It's just like having a living museum of a time long ago. It's one thing to learn about that time in school books, but to see it in person, is another."
"It's definitely eye opening, I will say that. And you're right; you can't erase history, but we should learn from it being there." He said as we made our way back to the car. "Thanks for bringing me here, Bells. This was very informative. And awe-inspiring. I still can't get over that canopy of trees coming in."
I smile over at him from the driver seat and start the car. "You're welcome. There's definitely a lot to do around this area, but there's only so much you can get to in a day or two. I'll have to bring you back sometime. Or you'll have to come back to visit Alice and have her take you around to the spots." I teased as we made our way back to downtown Charleston.
"I may just do that." He smirks over at me.
A/N: Hehehehehehehehe Did y'all enjoy that?
Next chapter is gonna be with Alice... and a little bit of Rosalie. Which, btw, may make you pee your pants if you end up laughing as hard as I did. Love Rose.
Anywhozzles, leave me some love! I'll see y'all tomorrow! Muah!
