I look over the road to see if I'm being followed. Luckily no evil is following me. I sneak past the guard, who's supposed to question everyone who enters Bree. I quickly make my way to the tavern 'the Prancing Pony', where I have to eat, pausing my journey to Edoras. I step inside quietly and sit at my table. I have been here a few times before, so I kind of claimed this table.
I glance around the dark tavern and pull the hood of my cloak further over my hair, covering my face. My table is located in the corner, close to the small window. I have traveled to dale to visit the men there, I have seen Erebor, the lonely mountain and I have visit Mirkwood. Legolas and Chloelas were happy to see me and I spend there a week before continue to travel. I don't stay in one city long because I don't like cities, even tho I'm born in the great Elf city: Rivendell. I prefer the quiet, mysterious forests and wilds, like Mirkwood. I avoid cities most of the time and that's why people are staring right now. Most people don't see much Elves here in Bree and that's why I always stay hidden.
I look at the bar and gesture for the man behind it to come over to me. Knowing my reputation, he quickly makes his way to me and takes my order. It doesn't take long before the barkeeper comes back with my plate and drink. I nod at him thankfully, and start eating. During my meal I notice three men looking at me and not in a friendly way. I give them a look while taking a hold of one of my daggers. Just as I'm about to move to fight the three, a old man appears, sit across the table and orders the same meal as I have by a woman who stood behind the bar as well. The man must have sneaked in, because nobody seem to have noticed him.
,I should introduce myself. My name is Gandalf. Gandalf the Grey." Right away, I recognize him from my fathers stories.
,I know who you are."
,Well, tell me. What brings Becahir Undomiel to Bree?"
,I'm just trespassing. I'm on my way to Edoras." I tell him honestly. ,My grandfather told me that traveling back to Rivendell was a good idea."
,Rivendell is rebuild. It might have cost four whole years, but it's recovered and save." Gandalf answers. ,And besides, your grandfather misses you. Just like your aunt."
,I doubt that."
,Becahir, it's been a long time since the fire." Gandalf takes a bite. ,Your father came to see me before he rode to war." I look at the wizard now.
,What did you say to him?"
,I urged him to take his army back to Rivendell and fight, but he was determinate to stop the orc army approaching. I could not stop him, but that's not why I am here." I give him a look and stop eating.
,This is no chance meeting, is it, Gandalf? You knew I was stopping here, did you?"
,No, it is not and yes I followed you, but that doesn't matter now." He turns his voice into a whisper. ,The ring of power has been found in the Shire. The dark lord knows it's there. Ringwraiths have been on their way and I'm worried about the future." I put away my plate and fold my hands.
,What do you need from me?"
,I'm going to Minas Tirith as quick as possible and meet with King Aragorn. I want you to join me on the quest ahead next month if necessary."
,An adventure? I like the sound of that." I smirk.
,You always searched for adventures, young princess Becahir." Gandalf says and smiles at me.
,How close are they to the Shire?"
,Too close. A couple of leagues, no more. They will be there next month. We need to help a young hobbit named Faramir Took."
,Took? Wait, is he the son of Peregrin Took?" Gandalf nods.
,Indeed he is. He found the ring but doesn't know it strength yet."
,Where are we going to lead him?"
,Your city, Rivendell, princess." I look down.
,Is there a chance I can kill some Uruk-Hai's? Maybe the one that killed my mother?" I ask Gandalf and he nods. ,Okay, I'll meet you here next month."
,Excellent." He stands up now. ,Until then." And that's the last thing he says before he leaves the tavern.
One month later
Following the instructions of Gandalf, I have come back to Bree. I have been traveling for a while, but stayed close to Bree so I could come back quicker. I remember the task to escort the hobbit, Faramir Took, to Rivendell. That was the only description. How am I supposed to recognize the hobbit if I have never seen him?
I enter the Prancing Pony now. Immediately the smell of alcohol hits me as I glance around the tavern, searching for the wizard but he's not here. I walk to my table where Gandalf and I met last month and cover my face with my cloak. I don't visit Bree a lot but still people recognize me. Some people know that I'm princess Becahir and that I know all the stories.
When I was little my father told me about Bilbo and his quest to help a company of Dwarves reclaim the lonely mountain. He told me about Thranduil and the spiders in Mirkwood. I thought high about those stories but the story I liked most was the story of the dragon Smaug. It was interesting what weakness dragon's and Dwarves had. Elves are known as fearless but only a few group of people know better. Elf's can be afraid. I am afraid sometimes but I won't show it. Bilbo found the ring and kept it for years. He was selfish! Bard, on the other hand, was a hero who killed Smaug and saved his people.
My father told me about the Fellowship and it's members. Prince Legolas, who's now King of Mirkwood and Chloelas her father. Aragorn, king of Gondor and my uncle. I will never say that to him. No, I hate that man. Let's see, oh yeah, Gimli son of Gloin, the only Dwarf of the company. Boromir, son of the former steward of Gondor and of course the four hobbits: Merry, Pippin, Sam and the one who was supposed to destroy the ring: Frodo. Twenty years ago hope grew back into Middle-Earth when Frodo and Sam stepped into Mordor, but he failed. In front of Mount Doom, Gollum attacked and killed Frodo, taking the ring and fled. Because of that failure, Sauron survived and has been building up his army. His army, who's twice as strong now, making this lands not safe. I dream of a life with Chloelas but I can't let her live in a world full of war. I won't let her!
Once again Gondor is in great danger. Sauron's eye has never left Gondor but was too weak to strike. I have no doubt that Sauron will try again now. Gandalf let me agree to this quest but is not here. I like a little adventure but this time it can end in dead. There is one thing - well, actually two things - that I'm certain of. One, is that I will defend Chloe from everyone who wants to hurt her and second, is that the ring must be destroyed once and for all!
I take a sip from my drink and scan the lowly bar. Drunken men are laughing and cheering, while the bartender hustles around busily. He passes me and asks me if I want anything to eat, but I kindly decline. He nods and swiftly makes his way to the next table. For the third time I look around, but not to see if Gandalf has arrived yet. No, hidden in the corner of the tavern, a person has caught my attention. The person reads something, or at least pretend to read while it's eyes keep watching me the whole time. The person makes me uneasy. I always hate it when people stare at me!
Suddenly the door of the tavern opens and I avert my eyes from the person, hoping to see the wizard but the only thing I see are four tops of wet hoods. I know humans are not that short and that most Dwarves are killed in battle, so this four tiny people must be hobbits. I take a quick glance towards the person in the corner, who seems interested in the four too. I wonder why, tho. The bartender leans over the counter, what is much too tall for the four guests on the other side.
,Good evening, little masters!" The bartender greets them. ,If you're looking for accommodation we've got some nice, cozy, hobbit-sized rooms available Mr. uh-" Shall one of those hobbits be Faramir?
,Took, my name is Took." The hobbit tells him and I keep listening. ,We're friends of Gandalf the Grey." I rise up a little, just like the mysterious person in the corner. That's Faramir Took? I don't think he's the person to bring the ring to Mordor. He looks very scared, I don't think he can defend himself. ,Can you tell him we've arrived, please?" They continue and I look to the bartender.
,Oh yes! I remember him. Elderly chap, big grey beard, pointy hat?" Faramir Took nods and the bartender shakes his head. ,I haven't seen him in six months." Wait, six months?! Gandalf was here a month ago. But maybe the bartender didn't saw him that day? I keep watching the four hobbits and see that the bartender leads them to a table, close to my table and I'm happy with that because now it gives me a good view of the hobbits.
Faramir Took has blond curly hair, a blue button-up vest, and a wet cloak. The one sitting next to him has darker hair, longer and straight. The remaining two are looking like brothers, though one has slightly lighter hair than the other. They all wear the same green, wet cloaks. I tear my eyes away from the four hobbits, around the tavern to look for Gandalf but he isn't here. It's weird tho because he asked me to meet him here.
Suddenly I'm aware of someone sitting down at my table. I push aside my cloak, making sure my knife is easy to see in case I need it but also making sure it still hides my face.
,I haven't seen you around these parts before." The stranger says before sitting down and looking at me, trying to find my eyes, which is difficult. I can see his eyes lower themselves, so he can take a sneak peak of my breasts.
,Eyes are up here!" I say through greeted teeth and he just chuckles.
,Why haven't I seen you before?" He continues and looks away from me now, but still wondering.
,That's none of your business!" I growl. ,But if you must know, I avoid cities." I say, eyeing him. ,But who are you and why do you ask?"
,Here in Bree I'm known as Elda." He answers simply and my eyes widen.
,You're Eldarion?" He nods, but is curious how I know his full name.
,How do you know my name?" I put my hood a little backwards, so he can see my face. ,Becahir? Long time no see. What lovely to see you." He tells me and I just pull back my hood.
,I wish I could say the same, nephew." I tell him. ,Why are you here?"
,I am on my way to Rivendell." I just laugh.
,Is Aragorn that bad of a king? That bad that you saw no other option than to abandon your own father?" I ask while smirking.
,My father is a great king and a great warrior."
,He was a great warrior in the war, but he isn't that great anymore."
,Aragorn defeated more orcs than you probably did."
,He killed thousands of orcs but he betrayed Legolas and drove him away, back to Mirkwood!"
,I didn't know you were close to Legolas?"
,I am. Anyway, I'm here on a mission so if you don't mind." I lay my eyes back on the four hobbits. I can hear them speak now. One of the hobbits turn towards Faramir Took.
,That woman over there has been doing nothing but stare at you since the moment we arrived in here." He points towards me. Faramir Took looks over at me, but he can't see my face because of my hood. He holds back the bartender now.
,Excuse me. The woman sitting across from our table. Who is she?" Faramir asks.
,She's an Elf, but around here she's known as strider because of her travels." Eldarion takes over my attention by speaking again.
,Do you think grandfather will be happy to see me once we're in Rivendell?" I turn towards him and give him a deadly look.
,Don't count on it. Humans are not allowed to visit Rivendell anymore, because of what Aragorn did to Legolas. And you must know this too!" It's true tho. What Aragorn did to Legolas twenty years ago is high treason. There hasn't been a human in Rivendell since and there hasn't been a elf in Gondor, well except for Arwen who married the king of Gondor. ,I'm here to meet with Gandalf, so if you don't mind to leave me alone. Go back to Gondor, to your coward of a father." I tell Eldarion, but he doesn't leave.
,You're pretty cool, you know that."
,Yes, I know and I'm probably stronger than you ever will be. You're just a lazy boy, spoiled by his father who is king. I have an important mission, so leave."
,Gandalf have sent me to Bree too, you know. I think for the same reason he approached you." He leans closer to me now. ,Maybe Gandalf meant for us to travel together. You know, because we are related."
,Why don't you get it?! I don't want to travel with you or anybody else, I travel alone." I lean back quickly and look back at the hobbits.
,Faramir Took over here will not fail to bring the ring to Mordor." I suddenly hear one of the hobbits say and Faramir's head snaps from the sound of his name and he jumps up to stop the other hobbit.
,Hugo!" He shouts, grabbing Hugo, but he falls to the ground and toss something, what looks like a ring, into the air. I watch closely, because if that's the ring, Gandalf was right! Gollum did lose the ring in the Shire and Faramir found it. Bilbo and Frodo Baggins should've killed him whenever they could, then Middle-Earth were free from Sauron, but now Sauron is way more stronger then he was twenty years ago. Faramir Took looks up from the floor and raises his arm, catching the ring on his finger after which he disappeared. I stand up from my seat without a word, leaving Eldarion behind and move towards the spot where Faramir just laid. I wait until he re-appears again and grasp him.
,You draw too much attention to yourself, Mr. Took." I hiss at him and lift him on his feet. I drag him down a nearby hall, then push him into a room and close the door.
,What do you want?" He asks me.
,A little more caution from you. That is not a trinket you carry."
,I carry nothing."
,Sure. I can usually avoid being seen if I wish, but to disappear entirely... that's a rare gift." I say, putting out the candles that are lighting the room. I put my hood down now.
,Who are you?"
,Are you frightened?"
,Yes."
,Not nearly frightened enough. I know what hunts you." I step towards Faramir. ,You're carrying something very valuable. You should be more careful." My voice calm and quiet. Just as Faramir is about to answer me, the door opens and the three other hobbits crash into the room. I raise one of my knives.
,Let him go!" Hugo shouts, holding an iron candle tree. One of the hobbits behind him holds a small chair, holding it up in front of him.
,You have a brave heart, little hobbit but that will not save you." I tell Hugo before turning back to Faramir. ,You can not wait for the wizard, Faramir. They are coming." I say to Faramir. Knowing what's coming without others hearing, it is a privilege that only Elves have. Legolas could see from miles and always kept Aragorn and the others safe, but he never got the credit for that.
,Who are coming?" The four hobbits ask me. I try to answer but am interrupted by a sharp, screeching noise. I gasp. I know what that sound is, even though I haven't heard it in ten years. That screeching noises are coming from the Nazgul. Sauron needed ten years to build up his army, letting it grow in numbers and strength, lead by his Nazgul's. The Nazgul's and his army are now ten times stronger than twenty years ago when Aragorn fought against him at the black gates. I still can't believe they lost. They should be happy Sauron was too weak to finish them, or Eldarion was never born. Not that I mind that part.
,What are they?" Faramir asks nervously.
,I bet you know the story." I just say, but Faramir shakes his head.
,My father never told me the story of Frodo and the ring."
,Your father was a part of the Fellowship. How can he not have told you about the Nazgul's?" Faramir just shrug his shoulders. I sigh. ,So, Faramir Took. How did you found the ring, if you don't mind me asking?" He gulps now, intimidating by me.
,In the river. I couldn't keep my eyes of it, so I grabbed it, but now we're on the run. Gandalf told me to run and to meet him here."
,Well, he's not coming. Keep it hidden." I tell Faramir, as I look out of the window.
,Are we safe here?" One of the other hobbits ask me and I just shrug.
,I'm not sure, but we need to stay here for the night. Traveling in the dark can be very dangerous."
,Are you going to travel with us?" Faramir looks at me and I nod.
,Gandalf told me to look out for you, because you have the ring. But this isn't a vacation. The Nazgul's will try to catch us, so we have to be careful."
,Well, let us introduce ourselves." One of the three other hobbits steps forward. ,I'm Milo and these are Firiel, Hugo and Faramir."
,Oh, I won't take you three." I point to Hugo, Firiel and Milo. ,Gandalf told me to take Faramir to Rivendell and so only said Faramir will come with me."
,I'm not leaving him." The three say at the same time and I sigh.
,Listen, if I travel with four hobbits I take way too much attention. The Nazgul's know Faramir has the ring and I'm strong. I'm the only one who can get him to Rivendell."
,And then what?" I see Eldarion walk into the room.
,What are you doing here?" I ask angrily.
,I'm here to help you to Rivendell. Gandalf gave me an assignment and I will do what he asked me. You said it yourself, traveling with four hobbits takes too much attention. You need my help."
,Gandalf knows me better than to set me up with a human."
,Well, he still did." Eldarion says and I give him a serious look. ,Look, we need to take Faramir to Rivendell, so why split up? We're way stronger together."
,I don't believe that a bit. Twenty years ago in the war of the black gate, Legolas was the only one who protected Aragorn from dying. Do you know what happened after? Aragorn never thanked Legolas for saving his life and only cared about Arwen and being married to her. He's the king, but he will never be MY king." I turn back to the four hobbits.
,Can you please tell us the story about those Nazgul's?" Milo asks me.
,No." I tell them and look out of the window.
,My father once told Frodo the story about them and now I will tell you," Eldarion says. ,You know, the Nazgul's were once men. Great kings of men. Then Sauron gave them nine rings of power. Blinded by their greed, they took them without question. One by one they fell into darkness. Now they are slaves to his will."
,That proves that men are weak." I say and I hear Eldarion sigh. I turn my gaze towards Faramir and the other hobbits. ,They are the Nazgul, ring wraiths. Neither living nor dead. At all times they feel the presence of the ring. Drawn to the power of the one. The ring that Frodo was supposed to destroy. They have been rebuilding their army for ten years now and they're strong. They will never stop hunting you, Faramir." Faramir gasp.
,Wait, so this ring is the one ring?" He asks me and I nod solemnly. ,Gandalf never told me."
,It's dangerous to know about the ring." I tell him and I see the black horsemen arriving at Bree now. ,We leave at daybreak. Get some rest." I instruct to them, stuffing the beds with pillows.
,Can we know your name?" Firiel asks me.
,My name is not important. For now you can call me strider." The hobbits nod. ,I mean none of you any harm. If I can help in any way I will, I can promise you that you're more safe with me than with anybody else." Faramir gives me a thankful look and I watch him move to the window. ,You know, traveling with the name Took is very dangerous. It's wise to choose a different name from now on." I say.
,Which name?"
,I have no idea. Just pick a different last name. The Nazgul's are looking for Faramir Took."
,What about Meredic Longfoot?"
,Sure, that can work. Now get some sleep, we have a long way ahead of us." Faramir nods and gets into one of the four beds. This is going to turn out quiet differently than I thought it would be, but I don't mind a little adventure and maybe fighting some orcs. I'm just curious why Gandalf didn't meet me like he promised and why he has sent Eldarion to accompanied me. He knows I hate humans because of what happened to my mother. I locate myself in the chair at the window as I raise my hood and sink into the shadows. My hand lies on the hilt of my knife and I decide to go to Chloelas in Mirkwood once the ring is in Rivendell.
