In Sickness…A Day In The Life
Summary: This is from the First Love vs. New Love Universe and set after the end of Chapter 33 and before the Epilogue. It is a birthday gift for a good friend and fellow BeChloe lover; she requested "either fluff or some angst with a happy ending." This story is about a day in the life of BeChloe and their 6 kids, so it will be 24 hours of soft and fluffy, cavity-inducing Mitchell family love. Enjoy!
PS - Happy belated Birthday, anotherbechloeshipper! I hope you like it.
PPS - The ending is a bit cheesy; I wasn't feeling angsty. And, I'm not sure exactly what this is but here it is.
"Ugh," Beca moaned as she fell face down onto her bed. "I thought having one of the trips sick was bad, but two at the same time is some kind of medieval torture."
"At least they're asleep right now," Chloe said, covering a yawn.
"Yeah," Beca mumbled into her pillow. "How long do you think it will-"
"Mama!" TJ cried out, causing both women to groan and sit up.
"You stay," Beca said, standing from the bed. "I'll take care of him."
Beca hurried out of their room and ran into TJ's room. She knelt next to his bed and pulled him to her.
"Hey, little man," Beca cooed. "What's wrong?"
"No feel good," the four-year-old said, coughing as tears coursed down his cheeks.
"Oh, baby," Beca said, feeling his warm forehead. "You caught what your sisters have, haven't you?"
TJ nodded his head, not really sure what he was agreeing to.
"I'll get you something so you can go back to sleep, okay?"
"No go, mama."
"I'll just be a minute," Beca reassured him. "I promise."
"I got it," Chloe said as she walked into the room with a bottle of Children's Tylenol and a small dosing cup in her hands.
Chloe handed everything to Beca and looked down at TJ.
"Thanks," Beca said.
"Mommy, I sick," TJ said, lifting his arms toward Chloe.
"I know, baby," Chloe said, lifting TJ and hugging him to her while wiping his tears. "Mama's going to give you medicine to help make you feel better."
"No," TJ said, turning his head away from Beca.
"Come on, sweetie," Beca said, holding the cup up toward TJ. "Your sisters took it, and they feel better now."
"Em sick?" TJ asked, his eyes wide.
"Yeah, baby," Chloe said. "Em is sick, and so is Connie. But they feel better now because they took their medicine. Could you be a big boy and take it for me so you can feel better?"
"Okay," TJ finally agreed.
Beca quickly put the cup to his lips, and while holding his chin to keep him from jerking his head away, she tilted the cup so TJ could drink it down.
"Yuck!" TJ said, shaking his head and frowning.
"Are you ready to go back to bed?" Chloe asked.
"No," TJ said with a yawn.
"Let's try, okay?" Beca said.
"No," TJ said, as his eyes closed and his head fell onto Chloe's shoulder.
Chloe looked at him and smiled.
"How about if Mama stays with you until you fall asleep?" Beca asked, causing TJ to look at her.
"Okay," TJ agreed.
Chloe put TJ back in his bed and kissed him on the forehead.
"Sleep well, my sweet boy," Chloe whispered.
"You so owe me," Beca mumbled as she kissed Chloe.
"I'll make it up to you when we're not so tired," Chloe mumbled, pulling Beca into another kiss.
"I'll hold you to that," Beca said as Chloe sleepily giggled and left the room.
Beca sighed and climbed into bed with TJ. The toddler bed was barely big enough for her and TJ, but she somehow managed to get somewhat comfortable.
~~ In Sickness…A Day In The Life ~~
Beca woke a couple of hours later and peeled TJ off her. She fell to the floor with a soft thud when she rolled away from him.
Beca's head popped up to make sure TJ hadn't woken up when she fell. Seeing that he was still asleep, she sighed and slowly got up from the floor.
"I heard a thud," Chloe said as she hurried into the room. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Beca said, rubbing her backside.
"How's our boy?" Chloe asked, walking over to the bed.
"He's been asleep since you left," Beca said, covering a yawn. "Have you checked on the girls?"
"I was on my way when I heard you fall off the bed."
"I forgot where I was for a minute and rolled off," Beca said, looking down at TJ. "He's still out. Let's check on the girls."
Beca followed Chloe out of the room. Chloe walked across the hall and quietly opened the door to see both girls curled up and still asleep. She pulled the door closed and smiled when she turned to find Beca with her eyes closed, leaning against the wall outside TJ's room.
"Why don't you go back to bed?" Chloe said. "You don't have to be up for a couple of hours and the kids will be fine until then."
"Bless you," Beca said, making her way toward their bedroom. She stopped and looked at Chloe. "Are you coming?"
Chloe smiled. "I'll lay with you until you fall asleep. I need to pack the kids' lunches and get breakfast started before the horde wakes."
Beca opened their door and went straight to the bed, flopping face down. She snuggled into her pillow as Chloe lay down next to her.
"I love you," Beca murmured as her eyes closed.
"I love you, too," Chloe murmured, kissing Beca's forehead.
~~ In Sickness…A Day In The Life ~~
Beca's alarm went off and she blindly reached out to silence it. She heard a moan come from Chloe and sat up.
Chloe coughed and sniffled, causing Beca to push her gently back down on the bed.
"Nope," Beca said. "You've caught whatever the kids have and need to just stay here and rest."
"I have to make lunches," Chloe said, covering her mouth as she coughed and then sneezed.
"Bless you," Beca said, getting out of bed. "Don't worry. I'll take care of the lunches and getting the kids off to school. I'll also call Mrs. Ogelthorpe at the day care and let her know the Mitchell kids won't be there today. I'll also let CR and Amy know I'll be working at home so I can take care of you all."
"I can't stay home. I have patients to see," Chloe said, making no move to get out of bed.
"I'll let Aubrey and Stacie know you're sick," Beca said. "I'm sure they'll agree you should stay home."
The only response Beca got was Chloe's soft snoring as she had already fallen back to sleep.
Beca left Chloe sleeping and went to check on the girls. They were just waking up as Beca entered their room.
"Hey, girls," Beca said. "How do you feel this morning?"
"Froat hurts," Emily said.
Connie coughed and sniffled.
"Okay," Beca said. "You two stay in bed, and I'll get you some medicine."
"Don't like it," Connie said, shaking her head.
"Nobody likes it, munchkin," Beca said. "But it will make you feel better."
"Make better, mama?" Emily asked, holding her throat.
"Yes," Beca said. "The medicine will make you better."
"I want," Emily said.
"Me, too," Connie said.
Beca smiled and shook her head. Emily being the first-born triplet made her the leader of her three youngest. Connie and TJ always followed her lead, sometimes to the detriment of Beca and Chloe's nerves.
"I'll get your medicine and come right back, okay?"
"Okay, mama," Emily said.
Beca left the girls and went across the hall to TJ's room, where she last used the kids' Tylenol.
"Mama?" TJ said when Beca entered.
"Hey, buddy," Beca said. "How are you feeling?"
"I still sick," TJ said.
"Do you want anything? Juice? Your medicine?"
"Yuck," TJ said. "No medcine. I don't like it."
"But, it will help you," Beca said, rubbing TJ's back as he lay on the bed.
"No," TJ said and started to cry.
Beca lifted him up and sat him on her lap, whispering softly to calm him down.
~~ In Sickness…A Day In The Life ~~
Meanwhile, across the hall. . .
"I want mommy," Connie said, crying as she rubbed her eyes.
"Let's go," Emily said, getting up and grabbing Connie's hand.
Emily led Connie out of their room and over to their moms' room. Emily quietly opened the door and pulled Connie in with her.
"Mommy?" Emily said softly.
When there was no response from Chloe, the two made their way to Chloe's side of the bed. Chloe was laying go her back, and Emily reached up and shook her leg.
"Mommy."
Chloe shot up and looked around. "I'm up!"
The two girls giggled, which caused them to start coughing.
"Oh, my sweet girls," Chloe said, looking at them. "You're still sick. Come up here and lay with mommy."
"Okay," Emily said, already climbing onto the bed.
Connie held her arms up and Chloe reached down to help her up onto the bed.
"You two lay down, and mommy will get your medicine," Chloe said, trying to hold back a cough.
"Mama, get medcine," Emily said.
"Beca!" Chloe called out and started coughing.
Beca heard Chloe and stood with TJ still in her arms. She quickly grabbed the Tylenol and hurried across to her room. She stopped just inside the door when she saw Emily and Connie sitting on the bed with Chloe.
"I told you girls to say in your room," Beca said.
"Want mommy," Connie said.
"Well, mommy's sick, too," Beca said, just as Chloe started coughing again.
Emily reached up and hugged Chloe, patting her on the back like Chloe or Beca did to her.
"I lay with mommy?" TJ asked.
"Come on," Chloe said, reaching out for TJ.
"Do you think that's a good idea, babe?" Beca asked.
"What's the harm? I'm already sick."
"Okay," Beca said, letting Chloe take TJ from her.
"Mommy!" Sophie cried as she ran into the room.
"Whoa," Beca said, grabbing Sophie by the back of her pajamas, and backing her out of the room.
Beca stops once she and Sophie are in the hallway.
"Mommy and the triplets are all sick," Beca said, looking down at Sophie. "I don't want you to get sick, too, so you'll have to stay out of there for now. Okay?"
"Okay," Sophie said. "Is mommy going to make breakfast?"
"No," Beca said. "Mommy's going to stay in bed and I'm going to make breakfast. Now, you go back to your room and get ready for school. I have to wake up Dylan and Billy."
"Okay, mama," Sophie said and turned to look through the doorway. "I hope you guys feel better, mommy."
"Thank you, Sophie," Chloe said and sneezed.
"Bless you," Sophie said and ran off to her room.
Beca sighed and poked her head back into her room.
"I'm going to wake the boys and get the kids off to school," Beca told Chloe. "Are you okay if they all stay here with you?"
"I'm good," Chloe said. "Could you bring us all some juice and the children's Tylenol?"
"I have their Tylenol right here," Beca said. "Come on, you rugrats. Sit up so I can give you your medicine."
TJ and Connie sat up and waited. Emily snuggled closer into Chloe's side.
"Come on, sweetie," Chloe said, shaking Emily gently. "You can go back to sleep after you take your medicine."
"M'kay," Emily mumbled and sat up.
Beca poured the medicine and each of the triplets took it without any trouble. She stood and went into the ensuite, coming back out with some Tylenol for Chloe.
"Here," Beca said, handing the Tylenol and a glass of water to Chloe.
Chloe took the pills and washed them down with some water.
"Ow," Chloe groaned. "That hurts my throat."
"Okay, you guys," Beca said. "Lay down and try to get some sleep."
"Babe, could you hand me the remote, please?" Chloe asked. "We can watch a movie or something."
Beca grabbed the remote and handed it to Chloe.
"Do you guys want something to eat?"
"No, thanks. I'm not hungry," Chloe said.
"Not hungry," TJ said, as Connie and Emily just shook their heads.
Beca looked at Chloe and said, "Okay, but text me if you change your mind or need anything. I'm going to get breakfast and lunches made for the healthy group."
"Okay," Chloe said as Beca left.
Chloe looked at the triplets and they looked back at her. "You guys can stay in here with mommy, but you'll have to lay down. We can watch a movie and rest, okay?"
"Can we watch Trolls?" Connie asked. "I like hearing mama sing on that one."
"Trolls it is," Chloe said, pulling up the movie. "I like hearing mama sing, too."
Connie moved in to snuggle closer to Chloe on one side, and TJ did the same on the other. Emily looked at them and Chloe pulled her onto her lap and settled back as she pressed play to start the movie.
~~ In Sickness…A Day In The Life ~~
Beca made all the necessary calls informing everyone of absences due to illness in the Mitchel household. She was packing lunches as she spoke on the phone.
Dylan, Billy, and Sophie came into the kitchen. Dylan helped Beca plate up breakfast and they all sat around the kitchen island to eat.
"How long will mommy be sick?" Billy asked Beca.
"I don't know," Beca replied. "Hopefully only a day or two. You guys need to stay away from mommy and the triplets until they are better. I don't want all of you getting sick, too."
"Can we talk to mommy from the doorway?" Dylan asked. "I promise not to go into the room."
"I think that might be okay," Beca said. "I'm sure mommy will want to say goodbye before you go to school."
"Cool," Dylan said. "Should we save them some breakfast?"
"They said they weren't hungry," Beca said. "I'll make some chicken soup for them to eat later."
"Can I stay home to help you take care of mommy and the triplets?" Sophie asked.
"I'm afraid not, sweetie," Beca said, kissing the top of Sophie's head. "But I do very much love that you want to help take care of them."
"I want to be a doctor like mommy when I grow up," Sophie said. "I like helping to make people feel better."
Beca hugged Sophie. "I think that's wonderful, Soph. Mommy will love that, too."
"I want to do what mama does," Dylan said, causing Beca to smile.
"What about you, Billy?" Beca asked. "Any ideas on what you want to be when you grow up?"
"Mama, I'm only ten," Billy said, rolling his eyes. "I don't know what I want to be. I like music like you do, and I like helping people like mommy. I just don't know what job will let me do both."
Beca chuckled. "You're right, Billy. You have plenty of time to decide what you want to be." Beca looked at the clock. "You guys finish up. It's almost time for your buses."
~~ In Sickness…A Day In The Life ~~
Chloe and the triplets were sleeping when the older kids came up to say goodbye. Beca shushed them and led them back downstairs to wait for their buses.
After seeing the older kids off, Beca poured juice for her "patients." She used the triplets sippy cups so they wouldn't make a mess all over the bed trying to drink from a regular cup. She placed the drinks on a tray along with some cut-up fruit and made her way upstairs.
Chloe looked up at her when Beca walked into their room. Emily, Connie, and TJ were still asleep.
"I brought you some juice and fruit," Beca said, setting the tray on the bedside table.
"Thankth, babe," Chloe said. "My noshe is all shtuffed. And everything hurts."
"I'm sorry, baby," Beca said, placing her hand on Chloe's forehead. "You don't feel like you have a fever. That's a good sign, right?"
"Based on our symptoms, I think we all have the flu," Chloe said. "We should be better in a few days. You might want to sleep in the guest room until this passes so you don't catch it. And try and keep Dyl, Billy, and Sophie out so they don't catch it."
"Okay, Dr. Mitchell," Beca said, pulling a small smile from Chloe. "I'll pull out the old baby monitor so I can hear if you guys need anything. I'm going to make a big batch of chicken soup for you guys to have later. I can make it and warm it up when you get hungry."
"I don't know if we'll feel much like eating," Chloe said, sniffling and moaning. "I feel miserable. I can only imagine how these guys feel."
"I'm sorry," Beca said. "You should try and get some rest. I'll check back in before I go into my studio, okay?"
"Okay," Chloe said.
Beca kissed Chloe's forehead and left the room. When she returned a few minutes later, Chloe was asleep. She placed the baby monitor on the nightstand and quietly left the room.
~~ In Sickness…A Day In The Life ~~
Beca had just finished preparing the pot of chicken soup and placed it on the back burner of the stove. There was a knock at the door and she went to answer it.
"Aubrey, what are you doing here?" Beca asked, surprise to see the woman.
"Dr. Posen is here to check on her best friend and godchildren," Aubrey said, smiling at Beca.
"Come in," Beca said, stepping aside so Aubrey could enter.
"How are they doing?"
"They were all sleeping when I last checked them about an hour ago."
"Is it alright if I go examine them? If it's the flu, I can give you a prescription that will help reduce the symptoms and speed their recovery. Otherwise, they could be laid up for a week."
"Chloe recommended they take Children's Tylenol," Beca said. "So far, Connie and Em have had maybe three doses since yesterday. I just gave TJ his second about an hour ago."
"That's a good start," Aubrey said. "They may need something like Tamiflu to help reduce the amount of time they're sick."
"They're in Chloe's and my room," Beca said, making her way down the hall.
"Aunt Brey," TJ called out, seeing Aubrey before the others.
"Aubrey, what are you doing here?" Chloe asked.
"I came to check on you and the triplets," Aubrey said.
"Aunt Brey," Emily and Connie said, sitting up.
"Who got sick and when?" Aubrey asked.
"Connie and Emily were the first sometime yesterday afternoon," Beca replied. "TJ was next around eleven last night. Chloe woke up with it this morning."
"Okay," Aubrey said, moving to sit on the side of the bed. "Connie come over here and let Aunt Brey have a look at you."
Connie moved and Aubrey sat her on her lap. She did a quick exam and nodded her head before calling Emily over to her. Connie moved to sit next to Chloe so Aubrey could put Emily in her lap. Aubrey examined her and then had TJ come over.
"It sure seems like the flu," Aubrey said. "Chloe, you're next."
Aubrey sits TJ on the bed and walks around to examine Chloe. "Yep, you all have it. I'm going to call the pharmacy and put in prescriptions for all of you to get Tamiflu. That includes you, Beca. And I want you to give it to Dylan, Billy, and Sophie, too. It will hopefully prevent you all from catching it. And, if you do, you won't be down for long."
"Will the pharmacy give us enough for all of us?" Beca asked.
"Not usually," Aubrey said. "That's why I was going to call it in." She paused. "On second thought, I'll go pick it up and bring it back myself. That way if the pharmacist has any questions or concerns, I can answer them."
"Thanks, Brey," Chloe said.
"Yeah, thanks, Aubrey," Beca said. "I'll walk you out."
"Feel better everyone," Aubrey said, blowing kisses at the kids. "I'll see you later."
"Bye, Aunt Brey," Connie and Emily said.
~~ In Sickness…A Day In The Life ~~
Beca came back to the room about twenty minutes later carrying a tray full of several cups of soup.
"Aubrey said you should eat something and drink plenty of fluids," Beca said, setting the tray on the dresser. "I put your soup in cups so it would be easier to eat. We ran out of OJ so you all get apple juice. I'm going to go get the TV trays so you can all sit up and eat."
Beca quickly left the room and came back with the trays. She set them up around the bed and had everyone move to sit in front of one of the trays. She then proceeded to place their soup and juice on the tray.
"Thanks, babe," Chloe said when Beca served her.
Aubrey came back with medicine for the family and helped Beca determine the proper dosage for the kids. Everyone took the Tamiflu and Aubrey promised to check on everyone the next day.
Beca did a couple of hours of work in her home studio. When the older kids came home she gave them a snack and told them to do their homework.
Two hours later she started to make dinner for the healthy Mitchells, deciding to just give Chloe and the triplets more of the soup since from earlier. Beca was in the kitchen when Dylan came in.
"Mama, do you need any help with dinner?" Dylan asked.
"Yes, thank you," Beca said. "Can you a can of corn out of the pantry and open it for me?"
"On it," Dylan said and did as Beca asked.
Everything was ready and Beca told Dylan to tell Sophie and Billy to wash up because it was time for dinner. Dylan ran out and a few minutes later all three kids were in the kitchen ready to eat.
"After we eat, we all have some medicine Aunt Brey got us that we have to take," Beca told the children. "It will, hopefully, keep us from sick like mommy and the triplets."
"Does that mean we can go in the room to see mommy and the triplets?" Billy asked.
"I think so," Beca responded. "We can ask mommy to be sure."
"Good," Sophie said. "I miss being able to hug mommy and the munchkins."
Beca chuckled as Dylan said, "Me, too."
"Let's finish eating so we can take our medicine," Beca said. "Then you guys can help me take some soup up to mommy and the munchkins."
"Do you think they might want some ice cream for dessert?" Sophie asked. "I know I would."
"We can ask them when we take up their soup," Beca said.
~~ In Sickness…A Day In The Life ~~
"How are you feeling?" Beca asked as she walked into the "sick" ward.
"I'm not at a hundred percent yet, but I do feel much better," Chloe said. "I think the kids feel a little better, too."
"That's great news," Beca said. "So, a couple of things came up at dinner with the older kids. First, they want to know if since they took the Tamiflu can they come in to see you all. And, second, they want to know if any of you want ice cream for dessert?"
"Ice cream, ice cream, ice cream," Emily, Connie, and TJ started chanting.
"Well, that's one question taken care of," Beca said, laughing.
"I think it will be okay for the kids to come in here if they want," Chloe said. "I haven't seen them all day."
"Okay," Beca said. "We have some soup and juice ready for you, so we'll bring that up in a few minutes. Once you guys have eaten, we'll get you some ice cream, okay?"
"Sounds good," Chloe said.
"Be back in a few minutes," Beca said and left the room.
True to her word, Beca was back within ten minutes of leaving. Dylan, Billy, and Sophie had hurried ahead so they could see Chloe. Beca entered the room to find Sophie laying on top of Chloe with her head on her shoulder; Chloe had her arms around Sophie, hugging her close to her.
Dylan and Billy were talking to Emily, Connie, and TJ.
"Dylan, would you and Billy set the TV trays up in front of the triplets and get them settled in front of them?" Beca asked.
Dylan and Billy did as Beca asked. Once the TV trays were in place, Beca placed cups of soup and juice on each tray.
After Chloe and the youngest were finished eating, and soup cups had been collected, Beca looked at her family and smiled.
"Who wants ice cream?"
A collective "ME!" went up and Beca couldn't help the laugh that escaped her lips.
"Okay, we have chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry," Beca said. "What kind do you want?"
Of course a chorus of all three flavors was shouted back at her.
"Dylan, can you help me get everyone's ice cream?"
"Okay, mama," Dylan said and followed Beca out of the room.
~~ In Sickness…A Day In The Life ~~
Beca finished scooping the ice cream into bowls and smiled at Dylan.
"Thanks for helping," Beca said.
"You don't have to thank me, mama," Dylan said. "It's not a big deal."
"Not a big deal?" Beca said. "It's a very big deal. I am so proud of the young man you've become. You are always doing things for our family and I don't thank you enough. I'm so proud to call you my son."
Dylan looked down shyly, a tiny smile curving on his lips.
"Come here," Beca said, pulling Dylan into a hug and kissing him on the side of the head. "I can't believe you're almost as tall as I am. Pretty soon I'll only be able to kiss your shoulder. I love you."
"I love you, too," Dylan said.
Dylan pulled back from the hug and looked at the ice cream.
"We'd better get these upstairs before they start melting," Dylan said.
"Let's do this," Beca said, picking up the tray.
Dylan grabbed the chocolate syrup and followed Beca out of the kitchen.
"Finally!" TJ cried out when Beca entered the bedroom.
Dylan helped hand out the bowls of ice cream, pouring chocolate syrup for those who wanted it (FYI: they all wanted it).
Everyone was done with their ice cream and Dylan took bowls down to the kitchen.
"Thanks, sweetie," Chloe said when Dylan came back into the room. "We were just talking about watching a movie. Right now, it's between Trolls-"
"No," Beca said.
"Or Encanto," Chloe finished. "Which do you want to watch, Dyl?"
"Encanto," Dylan said, causing Beca to smile and TJ and Billy to cheer.
"Encanto it is," Chloe said, queuing up the movie as Dylan joined everyone on the bed.
Chloe pressed play and snuggled into Beca.
"I love this," Chloe sighed, looking at their six children laying or sitting on their bed.
"So do I," Beca said. "I'm totally exhausted after all that happened today."
"I love you," Chloe said, looking up at Beca. "Thank you for taking such good care of all of us."
"I love you, too," Beca said. "And, you don't have to thank me. I'd do anything for you and the kids." Adding with a smirk, "Even risking getting sick to make sure you're all okay."
"Shhh," Billy hissed. "We can't hear the movie."
"Sorry," Chloe whispered.
The movie ended and Beca turned off the TV. She looked around and realized she was the only way still awake. She sighed and settled back, closing her eyes, falling asleep in seconds with a content smile on her face and thoughts of her family racing through her head.
Author's Note: I'm not a doctor, but I was given Tamiflu when I had the flu. After taking it I slept for a few hours and felt better. I used some literary license to make Chloe, et al, feel better so the older kids could be around them since they took Tamiflu as a precautionary measure.
