Chapter Four

Katherine's alarm woke her up at three in the morning, their flight was at six and they had to be at the airport two hours before then. She gently woke up Lucy and told her that they had to get up to catch their flight. Lucy nodded and rubbed her eyes, yawning for a few moments. She decided to let Lucy go first because she had contacts to put in before she could do anything. Lucy walked over to the bathroom and got ready, placing her contacts in. Once she was finished she started to pack her things. Katherine took this time to get ready as well. Lucy put her snow boots on with her regular shoes inside of her suitcase. Katherine had made sure Lucy packed for the appropriate weather, Fairview pretty much had nice weather year round. She then placed her Gosling around her neck and her Coda in her pocket, zipping up her suitcase and backpack with her medications Quest 2, Switch, and iPad along with all of her chargers. She put on her Apple Watch and placed her phone in her other pocket.

Once Katherine was ready she had Lucy put Midna's leash and service animal vest on. Because Midna was a service dog she would be allowed to ride with Lucy on the plane and not where the luggage was. They loaded up the car and Katherine checked them out after they made sure that nothing was left behind. They then got in the car and drove to the airport. Once they arrived they checked their luggage and took their carry-ons to go through TSA. They inspected everything and let them pass. Once there Lucy bought a bottle of water at the airport vending machine and sat down beside her mother. Her water was for the trip.

She and Katherine talked the entire time about their likes and dislikes to try to get to know one another. She learned a lot about her daughter, for example her ears were too small for most earbuds so she spent $250 on these earbuds that formed to her ears for a perfect fit. That her daughter also played volleyball and soccer on her school's teams. That she also played lacrosse as well. Lucy only learned certain things that Katherine wanted her to know. She didn't feel the need to share everything, especially about her father and how she actually knew who he was. She also didn't tell Lucy about Dylan, either of them, not wanting to freak her out even more. She didn't admit that her first husband was a monster who beat her, she didn't even mention her second husband. Katherine carefully picked which information to share and which information to keep to herself.

"What's your favorite candy?" Lucy asked her. "I do happen to love fudge." Katherine admitted. "What about you Lucy?" she asked her. Lucy pulled out a bag from her backpack. "These are Barnett's Mega Sour Fizz Balls. They're really sour." Lucy said as she offered Katherine one. Katherine took one and placed it in her mouth and almost immediately spit it out. "That's awful, you have to be kidding me, this has got to be a prank." Katherine said as she went to a garbage can and spit it out. Once she came back Lucy picked out a lemon one and placed it into her mouth and sucked on it. "I can't believe you're eating that...I think it took the enamel off of my teeth." Katherine said to her. "I love sour candy." Lucy said with a smile as she continued to suck on it. Finally she bit through and her mouth foamed. "It foams up when you get to the middle of it." Lucy admitted.

Lucy zipped up her backpack when it was time and boarded the plane with Midna and Katherine. They found their seats and sat down with Lucy placing her backpack below her in the net. They buckled their seat belts and the plane took off shortly after. Their breakfast came an hour later into the flight and they ate. It wasn't anything special, and actually was quite terrible, but they were both starving. Lucy and Katherine laughed about how terrible it was and what they could do to improve it. Suddenly Midna barked and a few moments later Lucy was having a seizure. The flight attendants stopped and ran over to her as Katherine timed the seizure. "Is there a doctor on the plane?" one of the flight attendants asked. "Oh that's not necessary, Lucy has epilepsy. If it goes over five minutes that's when we'll need a doctor." Katherine said. Luckily it didn't go over five minutes. She came out of it four minutes into the seizure. Once she did Lucy took out her contacts and took a nap.

Katherine woke her up before the flight landed so that Lucy could put on her contacts again. She did so and thanked her for waking her up early. Lucy put away her things and when the flight landed she grabbed her backpack and Midna's leash. They got off the plane and went to grab their luggage. Katherine found her car and placed everything inside while Lucy sat down in the car. Then Katherine drove them home. As they pulled into the driveway Lucy looked at the neighborhood and chuckled, from one small town to another. Katherine got out of the car as her neighbor and business partner walked towards her.

"Katherine! You're back. So how was your trip?" Bree asked her. "Cold." Katherine laughed as Bree looked at her attire. "You went somewhere with snow?" Bree asked her. "Yeah." Katherine told her. The two of them talked as Lucy opened the door and got out of the car with her backpack. Midna followed her as Lucy held onto the leash. She walked over to Katherine and stood beside her. "Oh? And who is this? A relative?" Bree asked the young teenage girl. "Bree, this is Lucy, my daughter." Katherine told her. "It's very nice to meet you." Lucy said politely. Bree noticed the red, wavy hair and her eyes, the left one was blue while the right one was hazel.

Bree was confused, did Katherine adopt the young girl? "Did you recently adopt her?" Bree asked. "No, she's my flesh and blood." Katherine replied with a smile. "But I don't understand." Bree replied with a very confused look on her face. "Why don't you come inside and I'll make us some lunch and I'll tell you all about it." Katherine said. She led them inside and had Bree sit at the table. Katherine then took Lucy up to the guest room and had her put her things in there. She wasn't letting Lucy anywhere near the other room. She kept it locked on purpose. She feared that the same thing that happened to the original Dylan would happen to Lucy and she could not let that happen.

"Alright why don't you rest up a bit, you must be still tired from your seizure. For now you can stay in here. I'll come get you when lunch is ready." Katherine said as she turned to leave. "Are you sure you don't need any help? I wouldn't mind, really." Lucy offered. "No, that's quite alright, I can handle it, just rest okay?" Katherine told her. There was a reason she wanted Lucy to stay there, she needed to explain the entire thing to Bree, but not everything, she wouldn't say a word about Lucy's real father.

Katherine went back downstairs and started lunch for them and started to explain mostly everything to Bree. "So you don't know who the father is?" Bree asked her. "No, and I'd like to keep it that way." Katherine told her. But something didn't add up. Katherine wasn't the type to get into one night stands, and the timing seemed off to her, but she didn't seem to know why. She didn't know why, but she had the feeling that Katherine was lying to her about who Lucy's father really was. Once Katherine had finished making lunch she had Lucy come down so they could all eat.

"So, Lucy, you're mother tells me you are quite the baker and cook." Bree said to her. "Oh ummm it's nothing..." Lucy replied to Bree, blushing a bit. "It's not nothing, you know I saw that episode of the Kids Baking Championship and I have to say your cake design was exquisite. I'm sure it tasted as good as it looked." Bree complimented. "Oh ummm thank you." she said softly, still blushing a bit. She took a bite of her salad and ate it for a few minutes before something felt off. "If you don't mind me asking, what's in this?" Lucy asked her. "It's an apple walnut salad with a balsamic vinaigrette. Why do you ask?" Katherine asked her. "Walnuts?!" Lucy said as she spit the salad out. "Lucy? What's wrong?" Katherine asked her. Lucy's face had already swollen up and now she was choking to try to gasp for air. "Lucy?!" Katherine said as she stood up.

"Lucy! What's wrong? Tell me what's wrong?" Katherine asked as she saw Lucy's lips turn blue and fall over. "Does Lucy have an epipen?" Bree asked her as she ran over to them. "I...I..." Katherine said. She didn't know. She was in tears and freaking out. Bree thought for a moment and ran upstairs to the guest room and went through Lucy's backpack. She found an epipen and ran down the stairs, following it's instructions before injecting it through her thigh. "Katherine, I need you to listen to me. Call an ambulance right now!" Bree told her. Katherine nodded and grabbed her phone. "911 what is your emergency?" the operator asked. "M-My daughter! Her face is blue and swollen. I need help now!" Katherine sobbed into the phone."What is your address?" the operator asked calmly.

"4356 Wisteria Lane. Please hurry!" she continued to sob. "Ma'am does your daughter have an epipen?" the operator asked her. "Y-Yes, my friend already used it on her." Katherine continued to sob. "Ma'am I need you to calm down, help is on the way. They will be there in the next minute." the operator said. Katherine then heard the sirens and hung up, running to the door. Once the paramedics got out they ran over to her with a gurney and went inside to get Lucy. "Do you want to ride along ma'am?" the paramedics asked Katherine. She nodded and grabbed her purse. She had already changed out of the winter clothes as did Lucy. They placed an oxygen mask over Lucy's face. "Katherine, I will meet you at the hospital, don't worry, everything is going to be fine." she reassured her as she walked to her car. The ambulance took off and Katherine held Lucy's hand and continued to cry.

The entire neighborhood watched as Katherine got into the ambulance and they left. "What's going on Bree?" Lynette asked as she came over. Gaby and and Susan followed her and stood by Bree. "Katherine's daughter had an allergic reaction to the salad Katherine fed her. "That's not possible, Dylan doesn't have any food allergies." Susan said to her. "That wasn't Dylan though, that girl had red hair and looked an awful lot like Katherine." Lynette said. "Wait, so are you saying Katherine has two daughters?" Gaby asked. "Apparently so. She didn't know she was pregnant and gave birth when she went on vacation after the whole mental breakdown fiasco. She had a beautiful baby girl and then some woman kidnapped the baby. Katherine never spoke about it because she was too distraught." Bree explained. "Oh my god." Susan said.

"So who's the father?" Gabby asked. "Katherine said she didn't know but..." Bree replied. "You think she does?" Lynette asked. "Well it's just that Katherine isn't the type to get into one night stands, and the timing seems weird. Lucy is thirteen. I think she knows exactly who Lucy's father is." Bree told them. "Anyway I need to go meet Katherine at the hospital." Bree told them. "I think we should all go, to support Katherine." Susan replied. They all agreed and went home to drive to the hospital and see how Lucy was doing. They were looking forward to meeting her after all.

Katherine sat in the waiting room crying to herself. She didn't know Lucy had any food allergies. No one had told her a damn thing. She could have died. The rest of the women arrived and walked over to Katherine. "How is she?" Lynette asked. "I...I don't know..." Katherine admitted as she tried not to burst into tears again. "I didn't know she was allergic...no one told me anything, and I just poisoned my daughter." Katherine said to them. "Katherine this isn't your fault. You didn't know okay?" Susan said as she hugged her. "What did she eat that she was allergic to?" Lynette asked her. "Walnuts? I think?" Katherine said to them.

As they all chatted about what happened and Katherine explained what she had learned about her daughter and what exactly happened to her the women all felt awful. "They beat her, molested her, and raped her...oh my god...that poor girl." Lynette said. Gaby felt awful, she knew what it was like to be molested and raped, that girl must have been so afraid and hurt. Now she didn't trust men at all, it's no wonder Katherine wanted to keep her father's identity a secret. "That's disgusting, who could do that someone, especially a toddler." Susan said, she was quite angry and felt so bad for Lucy. Bree wasn't sure what to say, that poor girl had been abused so much and to remember every little detail due to her eidetic memory? To relive it over and over must be horrifying.

"Ms. Mayfair?" someone called out. It was a doctor. Katherine stood up and walked over to him. "Hi, I'm Dr. Thompson." he introduced himself. "How is she?" Katherine asked him, wiping away her tears. "She's doing fine now. We ran some other tests to see if she was allergic to anything else. Your daughter is allergic to peanuts, all tree nuts, and all seafood, we had to pump her stomach as well to get rid of the allergen." he explained to her. "Can I see her?" Katherine asked. "Of course, if you follow me to the pediatric ward we can get you right back." he told her. Katherine followed the doctor as did the other women. She made a note of all of her allergies in her phone, they were all life threatening allergies after all and she wanted to remember them.

Dr. Thompson led them to Lucy's room and then left them. Katherine ran in and sat next to Lucy. Her face was still a tad bit swollen, but at least it wasn't blue anymore. Lucy opened her eyes. "Hey..." she said weakly. "Lucy, thank god you're alright...I was so worried..." Katherine said as she hugged her. "Why didn't you tell me that you had food allergies? I almost killed you!" Katherine asked her. "I thought Aunt Lily already went over it? You guys were talking about my seizures and asthma so I thought she told you about my food allergies." Lucy replied. "No, she didn't tell me." Katherine said as she thought for a moment. "Are there any other medical problems you need to tell me about?" Katherine asked her. "I'm allergic to peanuts, all tree nuts, and all seafood as well." Lucy told her. "The doctor told me that. Anything else?" Katherine asked her. "Let's see, we've got epilepsy, food allergies, asthma, and being blind as a bat...no I think that covers it..." Lucy told her. "Are you sure?" Katherine asked. "Yeah I'm sure." Lucy told her.

"Hey sweetie, we heard about what happened." Lynette spoke up. "Oh we're your neighbors, I'm Mrs. Scavo, that's Mrs. Solis, that's Mrs. Delfino, and of course you know Ms. Weston" Lucy ." Lynette said as she introduced everyone. "Oh umm it's very nice to meet you all. I'm sorry this is a little awkward...I've never had neighbors, especially ones that I've never met come and visit me in the hospital." Lucy said. "To be fair I've never had any neighbors visit me in the hospital before." Lucy laughed. "Well, we're what we call a pro-active neighborhood Lucy." Katherine told her. "I can tell." Lucy said. They stood their awkwardly for a few moments.

"How are you feeling?" Susan asked her. "Oh ummm better, my face is still a little swollen though, so is my tongue." she said. They could hear it in her voice. "If you ever need anything, you're more than welcome to come over. I have a daughter that's your age. Her name is Paige." Lynette told her with a smile. Lucy really liked Lynette, she was really kind. So was Susan, she wasn't sure what to think of Gaby, but she somewhat intimidated her, so did Bree for that matter. Then again her mother was a bit intimidating as well, but she was very kind and worried about her. "Oh ummm, what does she like to do?" Lucy asked her. "Oh well, shop and talk about boys actually." Lynette admitted. Lucy wasn't like that though.

"You know, you seem awfully familiar..." Susan said to her. "Oh, well have you seen the Kids Baking Championships? I was on an episode of it." Lucy said to her. "Oh! You were that little girl, Rachel Russo who made that geode cake!" Lynette said. "That's where I've seen you from!" Susan said to her. "That cake was gorgeous, didn't you win that episode?" Lynette said. Gaby was confused so Susan showed her a clip. "Wow, that is a good looking cake." Gaby commented. "I did." Lucy said. "The trophy is currently in a box on it's way here...well not here here...to the house." Lucy added.

"Have you always baked?" Bree asked her. "I have...and cooked. I make my own recipes too. My grandmother...well I guess she's not really my grandmother...anyway she had me helping when I was still in diapers whenever I visited her, this is before she took me in." Lucy replied. "Had?" Susan asked her. "Yes, she passed away three months ago from cancer, my grandfather passed away a month later from a broken heart. That's why I was living with my Aunt Lily." Lucy explained. "I am so sorry to hear that. Were you close?" Susan asked her. "Yes...she taught me to cook, well better than she could, later in life she burnt everything so I did the cooking for her." Lucy replied as she thought of the woman she thought was her grandmother and tried not to cry.

Katherine continued to listen to what her daughter had to say, learning more and more about her, but then Lucy had another seizure. "Oh my god! I'll go get a doctor." Lynette said as she hurried out of the room. Katherine timed the seizure in her watch, making sure Lucy's face wasn't turning a different color. A few moments later Lynette came back with some doctors. "She's okay! She has epilepsy!" Katherine told them as she continued to time it, and luckily Lucy came out of it thirty seconds later. "You said your daughter has epilepsy?" the doctor said. "Yes." Katherine said. "Are they just the tonic clonic seizures or does she have multiple ones?" they asked. "I'm not sure..." Katherine said.

"Just tonic clonic..." Lucy said weakly. "How many do you have a day Lucy?" he asked her. "Four...maybe five..." she replied. "And without your seizure medication how many do you get a day?" he asked as well. "Ten or more." Lucy told him. "What seizure medication do you take Lucy?" he asked her. "Zonisamide, six hundred milligrams." Lucy informed him as she tried to fight off the sleep. "I would suggest that she follow up with her neurologist." Dr. Thompson told Katherine. "Do you have any recommendations? I just got my daughter back, she was taken out of the hospital as a newborn, and I just learned all of this." Katherine replied. "Dr. Angela Moore is a fantastic neurologist and she is seeing new patients." Dr. Thompson informed her. "When can she go home?" Katherine asked. "She can go home at any time, I'll have a nurse bring in her things and her discharge papers." he replied.

"That's great news." Lynette said to Lucy, but Lucy had fallen asleep. "She's always exhausted after her seizures." Katherine said. "Just let her rest." she added as she sat down. When Susan learned of Lucy's epilepsy she started doing some thinking. Thinking about what Bree said, that Katherine claimed she had no idea who Lucy's father was. She remembered Lucy's eyes, one hazel like Katherine's, and the other was blue, maybe like her father's? But something bugged her about the epilepsy, she knew she heard that somewhere before, but she couldn't quite place it. Was epilepsy hereditary? She had to find out, she had to find out who Lucy's real father was because if she didn't it would eat her alive.
