Chapter Seven
Katherine awoke the next morning to see that Lucy wasn't on the couch. She went to check the bathroom to see if she was in there, but Lucy wasn't there either. She saw that her phone was still on the side table charging and that her contact lens case was still full of solution and her contacts. She hadn't even noticed the door was open and the glass was broken. Katherine saw a breeze blow the door open and walked to close it before stepping on glass with her shoe. She knew one person that would even try something like that. Katherine left the house and marched over to Susan's house, banging on the front door. "Katherine? Is something wrong?" Susan asked as she opened the door.
"Where's Lucy?" Katherine ashed with her arms folded. "Lucy? I haven't seen her..." Susan said to her. "You're lying. Tell Mike I'm calling the cops for breaking and entering unless he returns my daughter to me...now!" she ordered. "What's going on?" Mike asked as he came down the stairs. "Where's my daughter?" Katherine asked him with a hint of anger in her voice. "I haven't seen Lucy, not since last night." Mike told her. "I'm not going to ask you again Mike. Where's Lucy?" she asked, getting even angrier.
"Katherine thinks you broke into her house and took Lucy." Susan told him. "You mean she's gone?" Mike asked her. "Katherine, we have no idea where Lucy is, but you need to call the cops if someone broke into your house." Susan told her. "You're serious aren't you?" Katherine asked them. "Yeah, we didn't take her." Susan informed her with Mike nodding. Katherine's phone rang a few seconds later. "Hello?" she answered. "Missing something are we?" a voice on the other end said. Katherine could hear a muffled voice on the other end. She dropped her phone for a few moments before snapping out of it and picking it up again. "Who are you? What have you done to Lucy?!" she said loudly over the phone with a quiver in her voice.
"Lucy...so that's what Rachel is being called now?" the voice said with a laugh. "What do you want with her?" Katherine asked. "Well Rachel has been such a naughty girl, it was her fault we went away, and because of her we broke out, but we can't leave you out of the fun Ms. Mayfair. Maybe we should play a game?" the voice told her. "If one hair on my daughter's head is out of place I will kill you! Do you understand me?!" Katherine yelled as tears fell down her cheeks. "Ms. Mayfair, do you think you're in a position to be making threats when we hold all of the cards?" the voice said.
"We've been looking for Rachel for quite a long time, so we followed you're every move for a while now, we knew eventually you would lead us to her." the voice added. "How do I even know she's alive? Let me talk to her." Katherine said as she placed the phone on speaker. The person on the other end removed Lucy's gag. "NO STAY AWAY THEY'RE GOING TO..." Lucy screamed before Katherine heard a thud. "LUCY!" Katherine said. Mike grabbed the phone. "I swear to god if you touch Lucy again I will kill you before Katherine does!" Mike replied. "Oh, you must be the father...well we can add you to the game too..." the voice said. "Come to the Fairview Motel in one hour, room 107, come alone, if we hear or see any cops we will return her head to you in a box." the voice said before hanging up.
Katherine collapsed to her knees with tears continuing to stream down her face. "My Lulu..." she said quietly. "Katherine, we are going to get her back, I am coming with you." Mike said to her. "I'm going too." Susan said to them. "Susan you need to stay here." Mike told her. "No way, I'm going to help you get her back. She is family." Susan replied. "Don't you hate me for what happened?" Katherine asked her. "Honestly I was pretty pissed, but to be fair you two were still together when it happened, I've learned to deal with that. Besides it's not Lucy's fault, she shouldn't be punished. That girl needs help. Now come on." Susan said as she stood up and walked to the door with her purse. "Well? Let's go!" Susan said as she waved them over. Katherine stood up and walked to the door with Mike and they all left.
When they got to the Fairview Motel they found room 107, the door was cracked open. Katherine turned on the lights and saw Lucy unconscious and tied to a chair with an IV in her hand. She was sweating and beat to crap, bloodied and bruised everywhere. "Lulu." Katherine said as she ran over to Lucy and tried to shake her awake. Susan noticed the IV attached to her hand. "Oh no, anti-freeze..." Susan said as she ripped the IV out of Lucy. "We need to get her to the hospital, she's been poisoned. Mike do you have a pocket knife or something to cut her loose?" Susan said as she and Katherine tried to work on the restraints. Katherine took the gag off of Lucy's mouth. "Lulu, wake up...please wake up..." Katherine said as she tried to tap her cheek to wake her up.
Mike came over with the pocket knife before looking around the motel room to see if someone was hiding there. Lucy's eyes started to open. "Lulu?" Katherine asked as she saw Lucy's eyes open. "Ms. Mayfair?" Lucy asked, not able to see really anything. "I'm right here okay, we're going to get you out of here." Katherine told her as she started to cry again. "I...I don't feel so well..." Lucy said weakly. "I know...we need to get you to a hospital, you're going to be fine sweetie I promise." Katherine told her. Once they got the restraints off of her both Katherine and Susan took an arm and helped her up. Mike came over and picked Lucy up. "Hang in there Lucy." Mike told her, but once they turned around there were two people with guns pointing them at them. "I don't think you want to do that..." the woman said.
All four of them found themselves each bound to a chair, with Lucy drifting in and out of consciousness next to her mother. They had hooked her back up to the IV full of anti-freeze. "Let Lucy go." Katherine told them. "I don't think you are in any position to make demands Ms. Mayfair. It is lovely to meet you though. She does look almost exactly like you, it's uncanny really." the woman said. "You're the woman who took Lucy..." Katherine realized. "I am, but I didn't do it alone...I had some help..." she said to Katherine. "Hey there Kathy." a voice said as he stepped out of the shadows.
"Wayne? You're supposed to be..." Katherine said as she looked at him. "Dead? Well I did manage to survive what you did, just barely. You see I've been following you for a long time. Even to your trip to Vegas, you see I decided to help my lovely wife here. She killed her daughter too. But I gave her a second chance, told her where she could find a baby. I made sure she took the one thing from you that you cared for the most besides that fake Dylan. I knew you wouldn't give her up, she was your one shot to get it right, and you didn't even see it coming." Wayne replied.
"So now the question is, do I kill her slowly with the anit-freeze? Or do I kill her quickly with this?" he asked as he brandished a gun. "I think watching you watch the light fade from her eyes will be good enough for killing my daughter. Well until I kill you and the others." Wayne told her. "Or maybe, I should start with you?" he said as he placed the gun to Katherine's head. She winced and tried to turn her head away. "Leave Lucy out of this..." Katherine told him. He hit her in the eye with the butt of his gun. "I think, I'll start with you." he said as he pulled the hammer of his revolver. "Say goodnight Kathy." he said as he got ready to pull the trigger. Katherine closed her eyes. "NO! MOM!" Lucy screamed as she saw the blurry object about ready to be fired.
Mike sprang from his chair and tackled Wayne to the ground. He had managed to break free from his restraints with the pocket knife that his wife handed to him beforehand. Mike pummeled Wayne, for threatening them, for hurting Lucy, as well as being the one to rape and molest her. He managed to get the gun away from Wayne and shoot him several times in the head before turning on Marina who had already taken off.
Mike got up and walked over to them and began to cut their restraints. Lucy was crying, thinking her mother was dead. Once Katherine was free she ripped the IV out of Lucy's hand and hugged her tightly while she kissed her cheek. "M-Mom?" Lucy asked, not really able to tell what was going on. "Yes baby I'm here...I've got you okay." she said to her. Katherine couldn't stop crying, she was so worried that they were both going to die. She realized that Lucy, for the first time, had called her mom, not once but twice.
Lucy started to fall unconscious as she was untied. "Lulu? LULU?!" Katherine said as she tried to shake her daughter awake. Once Mike got Lucy's restraints off he worked on Susan's while Katherine was trying to wake Lucy up again. "Come on baby, you need to wake up, for me please?" Katherine said as she tried to wake Lucy up again, but it wasn't working. She began to shake her a bit harder while Susan was cut free. "No, no, no, no, no..." Katherine said as she saw Lucy wasn't waking up. Mike ran over to her and felt for a pulse. "She's got a pulse and is still breathing, we need to get her out of here, now..." he said as he picked Lucy up. He got her to the car and they all got in.
Lucy's head laid in Katherine's lap as they hurried to the hospital with Susan driving as fast as she possibly could legally. She continued to drift in and out of consciousness with Katherine playing with her daughter's hair. She tried not to cry again, but seeing her daughter in this state was the worst thing she had ever seen, knowing what her ex-husband did to her to get revenge on Katherine made her feel sick. Once again she couldn't protect someone from him. Who knew if he was even truly dead this time? He escaped death last time. She was going to have to take Lucy and run. She had no choice, she knew this couldn't be the last that they would see each other.
Once they arrived at the hospital they all ran into the emergency room."M-My daughter, someone captured her and poisoned her! Please you need to help her!" Katherine ordered loudly. Some emergency room doctors took her from Mike and took her back to get the poison out of her and to examine her injuries. "Do you know what she was poisoned with?" they asked Katherine. "Anti-freeze, they had her hooked up to an IV full of anti-freeze." Susan said to them. One of the receptionists called the cops because they had no choice in the matter.
All of them sat down and Katherine sat there numbly. "Katherine, she's going to be alright...Lucy's a strong girl..." Susan said as she put her hand on Katherine's shoulder. Katherine thought of where they were going to go so that he couldn't find them. She wasn't going to put Lucy through that again. "Katherine, you should have someone look at your eye." Susan told her. "I'm fine..." Katherine said quietly. "Katherine your eye is all red, I really think you should get it looked at." Susan insisted. "I said I'm FINE Susan." Katherine said once more. Susan dropped it. A few minutes later the police arrived to question them. "Ms. Mayfair?" a detective asked as he looked at Katherine. "Yes?" she asked. "I'm Detective Rogers, we heard there was a kidnapping incident. I'd like to ask you a few questions." the detective said.
The detective asked them all questions regarding the kidnapping, and the attempted murder. Mike admitted to shooting Wayne in the head, but Marina got away. They agreed that it was self defense and said they would go take a look at the body. "Ms. Mayfair?" a voice said. It was Julie, she was working in the pediatric ward as Lucy's doctor. "Julie?" Susan asked. "Hi mom, hey Mike." Julie said. "What are you guys doing here?" she asked them. "It's a long story, I'll tell you later." Susan explained.
"Anyway, Lucy is in recovery if you'd like to see her. She's going to be fine, we got to her just in time. She does have a few broken ribs though so she'll need to take it easy for the next few weeks. Oh, but your eye, would you mind if I examined it?" Julie asked Katherine. She let Julie examine her eye. "You have a scratched cornea. We're going to rinse that out, and I'm going to give you some eye drops. You're eye will be fine. I'll also give you an ice pack, there is a bit of swelling." Julie told her. "Thank you." Katherine replied as she led them back to see Lucy. Once they arrived Katherine hurried over to Lucy. "Lulu?" she asked as she held her hand and brushed a piece of hair out of her face. "M-Mom?" Lucy asked weakly. "It's me, I'm here okay?" Katherine told her as some tears fell off of her cheek and onto Lucy's hand.
"I'm sorry...you got hurt because of me..." Lucy told her. Katherine shook her head. "No, this is my fault...I thought I killed him...I didn't think he was still alive, and he hurt you, he did all of these awful things to you. I couldn't protect you. I..." Katherine said to her as she sobbed. "Mom..." Lucy said to her as she tried to sit up and hug her. She hugged her tightly even though it caused pain. "I love you so much Lulu..." she sobbed as she hugged her back tightly. "I love you too mom..." Lucy replied. Mike and Susan decided to not say anything, she could tell that they cared so much for each other, even though it had only been less than a week.
"Okay Ms. Mayfair, I've got the saline rinse and that ice pack for you, if you want to follow me over to the sink we can rinse your eye." Julie told her. Katherine got up and walked with Julie so she could rinse out her eye. She came back a few minutes later with an ice pack applied to her eye. She sat down beside Lucy and held her hand. "Sweetie, just get some rest, alright?" Katherine said to her. "So why are you here mom?" Julie asked. "Well...Mike is Lucy's father...and Katherine thought we abducted her because she didn't want Mike seeing her." Susan started to explain. "Wait...Mike cheated on you?" Julie asked. "No...I got Katherine pregnant when we were still together, but she never told me she was pregnant and you know all about Lucy going missing." he explained.
"So why doesn't Ms. Mayfair want you seeing Lucy?" Julie asked him. "Lucy is terrified of all men because of what Dylan's father did to her." Susan explained. "I don't understand, what does Mr. Davis have anything to do with this? I thought he was dead?" Julie asked . "We did too, but he managed to live, he followed Katherine to the airport and had his new wife kidnap Lucy. He then...well...beat, molested, and raped Lucy for years until she was taken away. " Susan explained. They then explained the whole rescue mission.
"Mom?" Lucy asked as she tried to look at her mother. "What is it sweetie?" Katherine asked her. "I...I need to tell you something..." Lucy said to her. "Lulu what's wrong?" Katherine asked her, seeing the worried look on her face. "He...he..." Lucy said as she started to cry. "Who?" Katherine asked her. "My s-step dad...he..." Lucy tried to tell her, but she wasn't able to. Katherine however got the picture. All she had to do was see her daughter's face and hear the fear in her voice to know what happened. Wayne had raped her again.
"I'll be right back." Katherine said with a hint of anger in her voice. Lucy thought she was mad at her and continued to cry. "Hey Julie, can you come here for a minute?" Katherine called her. "Oh sure Ms. Mayfair." Julie said. "My daughter was raped today...could you please discretely do a rape kit...and don't tell your mom or Mike." Katherine said to her. "Okay, I'll go get one, and a morning after pill for her." Julie told her as she left. Katherine went back inside and sat next to Lucy again. She saw that Lucy had turned over and fallen to sleep, but then heard sniffling. "Lulu?" Katherine said, but Lucy was pretending to be asleep. "I know you're pretending to sleep..." Katherine told her. Lucy turned over and wiped her eyes. "I'm so sorry..." Lucy said to her.
"Sorry? Sorry for what?" Katherine asked her as she loved another piece of hair out of her daughter's face. "For making you mad at me. I...I shouldn't have said anything..." Lucy told her. "Lulu, I'm not mad at you." she replied. "You sounded mad..." Lucy told her. "I'm mad at the situation, but never you sweetheart. Listen to me, this is not your fault...and I don't want you blaming yourself. We are going to get through this together okay." Katherine replied. A few moments later Julie came in. "Alright Lucy, your mom told me what happened, I'm going to do a rape kit on you so we can gather evidence of what happened. Then I'm going to give you this pill so that you don't get pregnant okay?" Julie said.
"Can my mom stay? I need her..." Lucy asked her. "Sure Lucy." Julie said. "Alright take some deep breaths okay?" Julie told her. Her mother grabbed her hand and kept her mind off of what was going on. Lucy tried not to move, but it was hurting. "Lucy I need you to stay still please." Julie told her. "Lulu, look at me. I know it hurts, but you're okay...squeeze my hand when it hurts okay?" Katherine told her. A few moments later Julie finished up and gave Lucy the pill with some water. "Thank you for being discrete Julie." Katherine told her. "You're welcome." she said. "When can we leave?" Lucy asked her. "I'll have a nurse bring up some discharge papers." Julie said before leaving the room.
Susan and Mike came back into the room. "What was that about?" Susan asked. "I-It's nothing." Katherine lied. "Okay Ms. Mayfair, I got Lucy's discharge papers." the nurse said as she came in. The nurse handed her some papers and had Katherine sign a few things. The nurse brought in a bag with Lucy's clothes and belongings. Once Katherine was finished she had Mike and Susan leave the room so she could help Lucy change. "Here Lulu, let me help, I know you're in a lot of pain." Katherine said as she helped her take off her gown. Katherine saw the extent of Lucy's injuries, bloodied cuts and scrapes with bruises all over. Her broken body reminded her of her own abuse by Wayne, and that made her even angrier. She had told herself that she wasn't afraid of him, but after seeing and hearing what he did to her daughter, she wasn't so sure about that anymore.
That's why they needed to leave, tonight, even with all of Lucy's things packed on a moving truck somewhere. She had to get her family out of there before he came back, or before Marina got her revenge. Once she finished helping Lucy get dressed she grabbed the papers and her purse, one of which included a prescription for some pain medication for her broken ribs. Katherine put her arm around Lucy and started to lead her out of the room. "You ready to go guys?" Susan asked them. "Yes we're ready." Katherine said. Tonight they would be packing, and they would be gone by the morning.
