Paige's eyes were feeling heavy as she tried to open them. Light blinding her as she slowly managed to open her eyes. She could hear a machine beeping in rhythm somewhere to her left. She slowly tired to sit up on the bed but could feel resistance trying to sit up all the way. She was still feeling a little fuzzy, but could see she was restrained to the bed she was in. Red marks around her wrists are red and sore like she's tried to get out of them before.
Looking around, she could only see darkness besides the small area around her bed, which the lamp above her illuminated.
She saw long blonde strands of hair fall from her shoulder and down her chest.
"There is no way my hair is this long." Paige thought to herself.
She started noticing more changes to her body like the now slightly more developed breasts she had. Paige's breathing increases as she climbs aboard the panic train. Freaking out, she tries pulling her hands free from their restrains, causing them to dig deeper into her already raw wrists.
A scream of frustration escapes Paige, but she cuts the scream short as she doesn't recognize the voice that had just escaped her mouth.
"Oh my god. I'm in someone else's body." Paige says out loud to the presumed empty room.
Paige's breathing increases to the point where she is near hyper-ventilation.
"Did that weird tour guide kid-nap me and switch bodies with someone else?" Paige thought to herself. "What happened to Evelyn and Frank? Did he kill them?"
Paige's breathing increases more as she starts struggling to remain conscious.
"I'm going to need you to calm down and try and take some deep breaths." A male voice whispers in her left ear.
Paige quickly turns to her left, but no one is there.
"I know this is a lot to take in, but you're going to have to try and calm down." The voice whispers in her right ear now.
Paige quickly turns to her right and again, no one was there. Paige's head started to swim and her vision slowly fading to black. She was unable to control her breathing and blacks out.
That annoying rhythm of the machine is back. As Paige opens her eyes again, she could see she was still in the same room she was in before she blacked out.
Looking down at her restraints again she can see more clearly. Noticing a bunch of needle holes in her arms where her veins are. Paige tries to sit up as much as she could again and could only sigh as she saw the same thing as before. Darkness.
"Glad to see you awake again." The same male voice whispers in her left ear.
Paige was catching on and didn't even look to her left. She knows she won't see anything.
"Why can't I see you?" She asks him.
"Catching on quick I see. I'm glad you haven't lost any brain function." The voice says back to her with a snarky tone. "It's because I'm inside your head. Inside you."
Paige could feel a chill run across her body as she let out a shiver.
"Trust me, it's weird for me to. Took me a while to get used to it." He says to her.
"I don't understand. I thought I was in someone else's body."
"No, you are you. Just…" the voice says hesitantly "Older."
Paige slumps back into the bed in disbelief.
"How much older?" she asks him.
"Well I heard them talking about your age when you first got here and you were… what? Ten years old? So that would make you…" the voice says pausing to do simple math. "Fifteen."
Paige's breathing starts increasing like before.
"No! Please. Try and keep calm. Nice deep breaths now." The male voice says in a panicked tone. "I know this is a lot to take in, but please you have to stay with me here."
Paige takes a deep breath in to try and slow it down her breathing.
"Good, now count to five when exhaling."
Paige counts to five while exhaling her breath. She does this until her breathing becomes steady.
"Where are my adoptive parents?" Paige asks when she feels like she is calm enough.
The voice said nothing.
"Are they dead?" Paige asks, terrified of the answer.
"No, they aren't dead."
"So where are they?" What happened to them? Are they okay?"
Paige was desperate for answers. She could hear the voice sigh before becoming silent for another moment.
"Okay, I'll tell you, but remember the breathing thing, okay?" the voice says, breaking their silence.
Paige nods her head slowly.
"I'm going to have to start from the beginning for you to understand what happened fully."
The voice takes a deep breath before starting.
"When you arrived at the shrine you visited that day was the day that changed my life."
Paige slowly started to remember vague details about the trip they were on in Japan.
"Thousands of years ago. I was a great and powerful Oni name Otakemaru that ruled a large portion of that area of Japan. Me and my army were feared across the whole land. No one stood a chance. Anyone who dared get in my way got slaughtered like the ones before them."
Otakemaru pauses for a moment before continuing.
"Until one day, a single man approached my temple. My men, knowing that one man couldn't possibly be a threat, invited him inside as he had a question for their great and powerful leader. I thought nothing of him as he entered my temple. I saw a top my throne, surrounded by my faithful and loyal mortal servants as the man approached me. He kneeled at my feet and removed his hood. He looked like any mortal human man that walked this earth."
He pauses again.
"What was his questions?" Paige asks quietly, so heavily invested now in the story.
"He asked 'if you had a second chance to do things different, would you take that chance?"' he says, quoting it so confidently, like the same question has been swimming in his own thoughts for a lifetime.
"What did you answer?" Paige asks wanting to know more.
"I didn't answer the question." Otakemaru says. "I stood up, enraged at the stupidity of such a question. I grabbed him by the collar and asked him what made him come all this way just to ask a pointless question and to have me take his life for it. He then looked up at me for the first time and his grey eyes pierced my very core. The man smiled and touched my wrist saying, 'it's okay, I know what's in your heart.' Then poof. Turned into that stone statue you saw at the shrine. I was paused in time while time moved past me. My army and servants didn't know what to do, so they left and moved on. The whole world moved on as I stayed locked in place, trapped inside my stone prison."
Paige couldn't find words to say. She was just trying to digest the story.
"The shrine was built hundreds of years later after being discovered by a tribe. They didn't understand what brought this statue to just rest in the middle of debris and forest." Otakemaru says, continuing his story. "I was there for thousands of years. Thousands of years to think and ponder that very question that the man asked me that day. This man knew that I was filled with regret for ruling the way I did. The bloodshed caused by me. My servants and followers afraid of me and for what? Power? Gold? Fear? It wasn't worth the pain and hurt caused. It took me thousands of years to learn this lesson."
"So, what happened when I got there?" Paige asks him.
"My second chance."
"But why me?"
"I didn't choose you. Something just happened when our eyes locked. I suddenly felt an electricity run through my entire being and felt more alive than I have ever felt in my while lifetime." Otakemaru says, explaining the situation to Paige.
"I don't remember anything after that moment." Paige admits to him.
"Yeah, well you aren't going to like this next part then." He whispers quietly to her.
"What do you mean?" Paige says to him in a worried tone.
"Don't worry, I didn't do anything to your adoptive parents." He says, assuring her. "But the tour guide… is a different story."
Paige's memory flashes back to the man in the teal windbreaker.
"What happened to the tour guide?" Paige asks, unsure if she really wants to know the answer.
"You have to remember I was locked away for THOUSANDS of years at this point and STARVING. You can't blame me for having a moment of weakness." He says, pleading with her to understand.
"What happened to the tour guide?" Paige asks again in a firmer tone.
"He was the first one I saw when I awoken inside you. I could hear this nice juicy heart beat clear as day. I could smell the sweet smell of his sweat on his neck. Then he noticed me standing by him." Otakemaru says.
Paige closes her eyes as the memory floods back to her. The memory of her jumping on this man and biting down on his neck. Taking a chunk of his flesh out with her teeth as he fell to the ground screaming.
Screaming surrounded her as Evelyn and Frank scream in horror. Nothing stopping her from continuing to feast on this man. Frank and Evelyn could only watch in horror, frozen in fear too much to react in time.
"Eventually your adoptive father broke out of whatever trance he was in and hit us over the head with a near by log on the ground." Otakemaru says interrupting the memory Paige was seeing in her mind. "I was ashamed that I already failed at m second change that I haven't emerged and taken over you since, but that doesn't mean I couldn't hear what was going on around us while they kept you asleep."
Paige was still struggling with the fact that she was now five years older.
"Frank and Evelyn were pretty much out of the picture when the men came to the shrine to take you away. Just handed you over because they were terrified of you." Otakemaru says, sounding disgusted by their actions.
Paige's body went numb. It's not like she was their actual daughter or anything. It just made her feel very alone.
At that moment there was a flick sound. Paige closes her eyes tightly as the flash-bomb of light blinds her.
"Oh! You're awake!" A female says from Paige's left.
Paige could only squint for the time being as her eyes tried to adjust to the increase of light. Managing to finally adjust her vision, she could see a woman standing in all white nurse looking scrubs, her long red hair up in a pony tail.
"Let me go get the Doctors." She says before turning away and exiting the room.
Paige was able to look around the room fully now that the lights where on. Chains hung on the far wall to her right with what looked like a drain in the floor. Next to it was a steel gurney with restrains attached and a small tray with small medical instruments.
"What the hell is all of this?" Paige thought to herself.
Before she could get any sort of response from Otakemaru, five men in white lab coats enter the room.
"Paige! Good to see you awake. I'm sure you have many questions." One man says, stepping forward from the group and closer to Paige. His voice sounding friendly, but it was off.
"Where am I?" Paige asks.
The man looks at the monitor that was beside her bed, then looks at Paige.
"These numbers look good. How are you feeling? I bet you must be hungry." He says, ignoring her questions.
"What is all of this? What is going on?" Paige asks, nudging her head towards the chains and stainless-steel gurney to her right.
"Listen, we just want to ask you a couple of questions, all of that is there just in case." he says to her.
The doctor applies a blood pressure cuff to Paige's upper arm.
"In case of what?" Paige asks.
The doctor looks directly into Paige's eyes.
"In case you decide not to answer our questions." He says sternly.
Paige looks over to the other four doctors standing at the doorway, just watching and taking notes. Saying nothing. Doing nothing.
This doesn't look good." Paige thought to herself.
"Yeah, it's not." Otakemaru whispers to her.
"Now let's check that blood pressure, shall we?" the doctor says in a creepy cheerful voice. "Are you up to answering some questions now or shall we let you wake up a bit more?"
He pushes a button on the machine next to Paige and she could feel the cuff inflate around her arm.
"What kind of questions?" Paige asks.
"So glad you asked that. Just some quick questions about your experience at the shrine back in Japan." The doctor says looking at the machine as it brought up her blood pressure numbers.
"I don't remember much." she admits.
"Oh, that's too bad. Not really an answer we want to hear." The doctor says in a mocking tone.
He pulls out what looks like a stick from his pocket. Paige raises an eyebrow at the pure weirdness of him carrying around a stick in his pocket.
Her attitude went from curious to pure pain in a matter of seconds when the doctor flicks the stick. Pain washing over Paige's whole body all at once. White hot knifes stabbing deeply into every inch of her. Only stopping when the doctor flicks the stick again.
"Now, I really hope that helps refresh your memory." He says leaning over Paige's bed.
"I honestly don't remember much."
"How did the creature enter your body?" the doctor asks aggressively.
"I don't know." She answers truthfully.
He flicks the stick again. The wave of pain washing over her again. The restraints now cutting deeper into her wrists as her body is tensing with the pain. He stops it again and leans even closer until his face is next to her face.
"Tell me how he entered your body." The doctor asks.
"I'm telling you the truth, I don't know."
"We just want to help you here Paige. Don't you want him to leave your body? You could go back to your normal life like you had before. All you have to do it tell us how you got him to transfer to your body."
"I swear I didn't do anything. It just happened so fast." Paige says, closing her eyes trying to remember the event.
"What are the last things you remember?"
"Hiking in the forest. It was nighttime. Green fire."
"No words spoken. No artifacts broken?" The doctor asks her.
"No."
He removes the blood pressure cuff from Paige's arm.
"I really didn't want to do this the hard way Paige. I really didn't. But you left me no choice." He says as he turns back towards the other doctors. "Doctor Schwarz, please get the table ready."
One of the doctors' steps forward. He walks over to the gurney in a weird little shuffle motion. He starts examining the instruments on the tray next to the steel gurney.
"No please. I told you everything I know." Paige says, trying to plea with him.
"I know, I do believe you, but that means we're going to have to try other means to try and extract him from you." He says with a sick smirk on his face.
"Just say the word, and I'll get you out of here." Otakemaru whispers in her ear.
"Let's get her moved over to the gurney." The doctor beside Paige says to the remaining doctors in the doorway.
"How?" Paige asks Otakemaru.
"It won't be pretty, but you'll be safe. I promise." Otakemaru says reassuringly.
"I know we've already taken a lot of blood, but I would like some more blood samples as well now that she's awake." The doctor says, turning his back to Paige.
"These men are evil. I can take care of them and get you out. There are no good intensions here." Otakemaru whispers, trying to convince her of the evil in this place.
"Please don't do this." Paige says, trying to plea with them one last time.
They all ignore her and continue to discuss the next tests they want to perform on her.
"They will do endless tests on your trying to remove me from you. When they find out that it cannot be done, best-case scenario they keep you locked away." Otakemaru says.
"And worst-case scenario?" Paige asks him.
"They use you as a weapon."
Paige closes her eyes tightly. She could hear multiple sets of footsteps coming towards her.
"Okay. I want to get out of here." Paige says out loud.
The doctors stop in their tracks as a green fire engulfs Paige. That was the last thing she remembers.
