Paige spent the next three days back in Alaska with Theodard in his cabin in the remote wilderness. It was starting to become that time of year when the nights would start to make it dark outside again, as opposed to the near 24 hour day light they get in the summer months there. Miller and Locksley's funeral is the day they are to leave for England, giving them just enough time to attend then head straight over to the harbor.
"You're going to do great out there kid." Theodard says as he walks out to the porch were Paige was sitting. "And when you get back, we can celebrate you getting into the Department of Aurors!"
"Yeah, it'll be great." Paige says, forcing a smile on her face.
"What are you thinking about if it's not your promotion?" Theodard asks, leaning against the porch railing.
"It's nothing, I'm fine." Paige says looking down at her hands.
"Is this about Miller and Locksley? Because I'm sure you don't need to be told their deaths aren't on your hands." Theodard says, assuring her.
Paige forces another smiles and shivers.
"Enough about work then. How's your love life?" Theodard asks with a smirk.
"Non-existent and none of your business." Paige says looking up from her hands and back to him.
"Come on, there's really no one?" Theodard asks.
"No and drop it." Paige snaps.
"Not even your friend there… uh what's his name? Ripper." Theodard says.
"It's Ripley and he's gay." Paige says with a smirk.
"What? He is? That's a shame. You two would have been good together." He says chuckling.
"When did you get so invested in my dating life?" Paige asks, raising her eyebrow.
"Because you can't just keep talking about work and going to work and hanging around work people. You need to find a balance kid." Theodard says as he wraps his arm around Paige's shoulder.
"Work is important to me though" Paige says walking away from him. "I don't know why I wouldn't take it seriously."
"It's hard to explain." Theodard says with a sigh.
"I think I'm going to head to bed early. I have a long day tomorrow." Paige says as she turns to go back into the cabin. "I'll be gone early in the morning, so I guess I'll see you when I get back."
"Goodnight kid, and be safe over there will you?" He says as she walks inside.
"I'll try." Paige says over her shoulder to him.
Paige stands with the remaining Aurors on that mission at the Honored Auror's graveyard. Miller and Locksley's graves just 10 feet away from each other. Miller's pregnant wife is on her knees next to his gravesite, tears flowing down her cheeks. Locksley's elderly parents are holding each other next to his gravesite, silent tears also rolling down their cheeks. Paige and her team left as soon at the caskets hit the ground.
They walk to the forest that surrounds the graveyard. Miller's wife's cries echoed through the trees as Paige and her team disappear.
When the boat arrived in England, two Aurors from the Ministry of Magic were waiting for them. Holding a sign saying "MACUSA".
"Captain Asher, welcome to England. I hope you had a pleasant trip." The one Auror with ginger hair says, extending his hand for a handshake.
"You must be Mr. Weasley." Paige says, grabbing his hand.
"Please, call me Arthur. We are pleased to have you here. I'm afraid the Aurors with the Ministry of Magic are currently spread pretty thin, so we appreciate any help and relief you can offer." Arthur says, leading them towards the taxi cars parked near by.
"A lot of attacks happening or something?" Paige asks, her interest peaking.
"Yeah, definitely out of the ordinary. Just last week…" Arthur started to say, but was interrupted by the other Auror with him clearing her throat, getting him to stop.
Paige looks back and forth between them.
"Let's get you to the train station and on your way to Hogsmeade shall we?" Arthur says changing the subject.
Paige looks back at the rest of her team before walking forward to the two taxi cabs. They put their backpacks in the trunks and hop in. Paige gets into the same cab as Arthur in hopes to get him to talk a little more, but the other Auror with him got in the cab as well.
"First time in England Captain Asher?" Arthur asks, trying to make small talk as they drive threw the city to get to the train station.
"Yes, it is. Lovely so far." Paige says politely.
"Just wait until you see Hogwarts! Beautiful castle, beautiful grounds." Arthur says a wide grin on his face. "I have four children attending Hogwarts this year. They can't get enough of the place."
"Oh wow, that's great. Yeah, I can't wait to see the grounds." Paige says as she turns her attention to the other Auror with Arthur. "I'm sorry, I don't think I caught your name."
"Oh, how rude of me. This is my college, Mrs. Rebecca Harris. She's been an Auror for…what? Four years now?" Arthur asks her.
"Five years." She says coldly, correcting him.
"How do you like being an Auror over here. I would love to hear some comparisons between the two countries." Paige says, slightly interested.
"Perhaps another time." Rebecca says, turning to look out the window.
The rest of the cab ride is quiet. They arrive at the train station, the skies above rumbling and rain pouring down outside. Paige gets out of the cab and is instantly soaked. They grab their bags from the trunks and run into the train station, Arthur following them in, but Mrs. Harris staying in the cab.
"So, your station is 9 ¾. Just keep on walking through the wall to get there. It should be open in about." Arthur starts to say, but stops to check his pocket watch. "Five minutes. Now you have about ten minutes to get to the platform before the train will leave. There might be some teachers coming with you as some of them like to arrive early to get some things set up before the start of the school year. Dumbledore will meet you at the station to give you a tour. Any questions?"
"No, sir." Paige says, still soaking wet from the down pour outside.
"Excellent. Good luck out there." Arthur says as he pulls up the collar on his jack to help cover his head from the rain as he runs back to the taxi.
"Anyone need to do anything in these five minutes?" Paige asks her teams.
They all shake their heads no.
"Okay, let's just head to the station, wait for the five-minutes. Board the train right away and patrol the train cars on the way to the school." Paige says as they form a huddle around her. "Earpieces always in. Never let your guard down."
The team all touch their ears, indicating they turned them on. Paige then turns hers on.
They do what she instructed them to do. They wait the five minutes to enter the platform, stow their bags and board the train, being the firsts ones to do so.
"Lieutenant Ripley, you want front or back?" Paige asks him as they enter the train.
"You know I'm a back kind of man." Ripley responds in a flirty tone.
"How could I forget." Paige mutters back. "Two others go with Ripley and the last one come with me to the front."
"Bobcat will go with you Captain Asher." Bobcat says as he moves closer to her.
"Alright. Keep up comms and do check ins." Paige directs as she starts to walk towards the front of the train.
In the next ten minutes, Paige and her team would get weird looks as Professors and Staff board the train. Suddenly, the train starts to move.
"How's everything looking back there Lieutenant?" Paige asks.
"All good. We only have one person sitting in the back here. A little odd, but nothing to worry about for now." Ripley responds.
"Good, maybe get Yankis to do some patrolling back and forth from the middle to the back. Make sure you and Hernandez watch each other's back." Paige says. "I'm going to have Bobcat stationed near the front and I'm going to be doing patrols from the middle to the front. Understood.?"
"Understood." Ripley says.
"Understood." Yankis says after Ripley.
"Understood, Ma'am." Bobcat replies.
Paige turns to Bobcat, giving him a nod and starts to walk towards the middle of the train. She notices many staff either sitting together or completely alone in the train cars. She approaches a train car with a woman with frizzly grey hair, nervously sitting by herself looking out the window. Paige starts to walk away, but the woman stands up suddenly, causing Paige to stop.
"Wait, wait, wait. I can feel something." She blurts out, leaving Paige standing there confused.
"I'm sorry, are you talking to me Ma'am?" Paige asks, moving into the doorway more.
The ladies head slowly turns to face Paige. Her eyes looking wild and panicked. She suddenly runs over to her and grabs her by the shoulders tightly.
"Ma'am. What are you doing? Please let go of me." Paige says trying to break free from her grip without having to harm her.
"You have something evil inside you. I can feel it. You think after all the lives it took; it will save a life?" She says as she grabs Paige's face.
"Ma'am please let me go. I don't want to have to forcefully remove you off me." Paige says strictly, still not putting a hand on this crazy woman.
"When the wings break. Don't trust the lover. Don't trust the lover." She mutters as she releases her grip on Paige and slumps back to her seat near the window.
"Are you okay Ma'am." Paige asks her as she still tries to process what the hell just happened.
"Ignore her. She's a little…odd." A man's voice says from behind her.
Paige turns around and see a bruiting tall man with medium length black hair, dressed in all black robes with dark piercing eyes. His face emotionless.
"Right. Understood." Paige manages to say after a moment. "Captain Paige Asher, Auror for MACUSA."
Paige holds her hand out to him for a handshake, but he doesn't extend his. Paige awkwardly bows, pulling her hand back. Another woman opens the train car beside the crazy woman's car.
"Did I hear that right? An American Auror?" She asks as she folds her arms.
"Yes, Ma'am." Paige says looking at her.
"Why on earth do we need American Aurors on board the Hogwarts Express?" She asks, her annoyance dripping in her words.
"We're here to offer extra security to the grounds for the school this year." Paige answers.
"Well I can assure you Hogwarts doesn't need extra security, and we especially don't need extra security aboard this train. So, you need to just clam down with all the patrolling and extra stuff." She responds sourly.
"Professor Sinistra, I believe now it not the time to discuss this." The man says, interjecting.
Professor Sinistra huffs slightly.
"Wasn't the train attacked last year by Dementors?" Paige asks, trying to keep a smirk off her face.
"I will be talking to Dumbledore about this." She says angrily as she slams her train car door closed.
"Enjoy the rest of your trip." The man says to Paige with a slight smirk, turning away from her.
"Thanks." Paige whispers as he walks away from her.
The rest of the train trip was uneventful. Paige made sure to avoid the two train cars with the two women to avoid further awkward engagements.
Dumbledore was there waiting for them at the train station with a smile on his face and his bright blue eyes gleaming.
"Welcome, welcome, welcome!" He says to them as they gather around him on the platform. "I very much appreciate you guys making such a long journey to help us out this year."
"It's out pleasure sir." Paige says to him with a smile. "Anything for you."
Dumbledore's smile widens
"I thought I would come with you guys to help get you settled into your rooms in Hogsmeade. I have a big feast waiting for you as well, so I hope you're all hungry." He says, grabbing Paige's arm. "Don't worry about your bags, I will have them delivered to your hotel rooms."
The same man from the train walks up to their group.
"Ah Severus, I'm glad you got my letter to show up early. I appreciate you coming on such short notice. I was hoping you can help me make our American guests here more comfortable. Come, come. Let's all go to Hogsmeade." Dumbledore says excitedly as he drags Paige towards the town.
Paige looks over her shoulder and sees the man and her team following behind them as they continue down a dirt road to Hogsmeade.
"How is Theodard Fontaine doing? I haven't heard from him in years." Dumbledore asks Paige, walking side-by-side with her.
"He's doing well. Still stubborn, but wise." Paige says with a smile.
"He's a great man." Dumbledore says.
"Agreed sir."
"So you've moved up the ranks pretty quickly as well. Leading your own team and everything." Dumbledore says, nodding his head slightly backwards towards her team.
"Yes, it's been a lot of hard work. Hopefully after this I will be able to return to a position in the Department of Aurors." Paige says, looking away from him.
"What a great accomplishment for such a young witch." He says to her, the lights of Hogsmeade appearing in the distance. "I just hope you remember to actually live a life. I mean a life not a work life."
"Once I've reached my top bar, I'm sure there will be plenty of time to live my life." Paige says uncomfortably, not wanting to dive into her non-existent personal life.
"Hm, seems like a difficult task when that constantly keeps moving. I fear life will go right past you while your head is focused on your employment and not the relationships you should be building." Dumbledore says, prodding deeper.
"I'll be alright, sir." Paige says nervously wondering why people we suddenly so interested in her personal life.
"He's not exactly wrong Paige. You haven't even been in a relationship." Otakemaru whispers in her ear.
"What are you talking about? What about that one guy… Henry… something." Paige says, trying to defend herself.
"Henry King?! The news reporter guy who was madly in love with you and you broke his heart?" Otakemaru says to her.
"He wasn't madly in love with me, and he was beginning to become clingy." Paige says to him in her head.
"Right, wanting to set aside time to have dinner with you and ask about your life is being too clingy." Otakemaru says sarcastically.
"Listen, I don't need or have time for a romantic relationship right now. I need to focus on my career." Paige snaps at Otakemaru to shut him up.
Dumbledore glances over at Paige.
"You know, just some advice from an accomplished old man. There is nothing deeper and darker than loneliness. I would listen to your Oni friend there. He has some good advice." Dumbledore's voice says inside her head.
"Oh right, you can do that mind thingy." Paige mumbles sheepishly.
"Indeed." Dumbledore says with a wink.
They arrive at the tavern/inn. A huge wooden sign with a cauldron and three-broom sticks was hanging outside the building. As they walk in, only a few people are sitting at tables, a cheerful roar of chatter suddenly stops when they enter. All eyes in the tavern are on them.
"Dumbledore! What a great surprise! How was your summer?" A woman says from behind the bar.
She walks out from behind the bar and walks towards them.
Good evening Madam Rosmerta. Busy, busy summer. Still conducting business." Dumbledore says as he steps aside slightly to show Madam Rosmerta the group of them standing behind him. "I believe my friends here will be guests of your Inn for the foreseeable future."
"Of course! Come on in darlings! Let's get you all settled into your rooms and get some drinks in you." She says in a cheery voice.
"We need the use the upstairs meeting room if that's not too much of an issue." Dumbledore says, removing his cloak and hanging it up on the coat rack beside the door.
"Of course, no problem at all." She says as she ushers them up the stairs. "You'll find your rooms to the left. Keys should be in the doors. Keep them on you to access your room."
"Thank you." Paige says as she walks up the stairs.
"Can I send a round of drinks up with you?" She asks.
Paige was about to reply, but Dumbledore interrupts her.
"Let's get a round of fire whiskey before dinner. Let's get them some of that nice French wine you have during the meal, and then they will finish up the night with that red current rum you have that is absolutely to die for." He says as he also makes his way up the stairs.
"I'm sorry sir, but we really shouldn't drink while on a job." Paige starts to say, but again, Dumbledore interrupts her.
"Nonsense. A few drinks can't hurt. Besides, I don't need your services for another few days." Dumbledore insists. "Please enjoy yourself while you're here. Experience the great hospitality Hogsmeade as to offer."
"It's okay to lighten up a bit Captain." Ripley says to Paige while nudging her with his arm.
Paige sighs and continues up the stairs. Not only was she out numbered, but there was no way she was going to argue with Dumbledore.
She turns left at the top of the stairs and see a long hallway, doors on either side. Five keys hanging down from the doors at the end of the hallway. She walks to the furthest door on the right and opens the door and walks in. She closes the door behind her and takes a deep breath in. She spots her backpack already in the room. She walks into the bathroom and looks at herself in the mirror. She sighs again and turns on the tap. She rinses her face with the warm water, then pats it dry with the towel hanging beside the sink.
"Yankis is kind of cute." Otakemaru says, breaking the silence.
"No." Paige says out loud to herself in the mirror.
"Why? What's wrong with Yankis?" Otakemaru asks. "He's kind of charming, fit, takes his job seriously. Match made in heaven."
"If I wanted to be with someone who was just like me, I would have made a clone of myself and dated that." Paige says back to him sarcastically. "Besides, we can't date co-workers."
"Oh, so you're looking for your Ying to your Yang?" Otakemaru asks, slightly amused.
"I don't know what I'm looking for, but I know it's not Yankis." Paige says as she exits the bathroom.
"What about Bobcat? He already follows you around like a cute little puppy dog anyways." Otakemaru says, unable to drop the subject.
"I don't even know if Bobcat is his real name or not and stop trying to set me up with members from my team!" Paige says, getting annoyed now.
"Oh, sorry that they are the only men you meet and hang out with. I have no one else to pick from to try and set you up with." Otakemaru says back in a whiney voice.
There was suddenly a knock on her door that made Paige jump. She walks over and opens it slightly. She opens it all the way when she sees that it's Severus, the man from the train.
"Sorry to disturb you, but Dumbledore requests to have a quick word with just you before dinner." He says to her.
"Thank you, I'll be right out." Paige says with a smile before closing her door again.
Paige checks herself in the mirror beside the door, making sure her hair was still neatly in it's bun. She couldn't help but think of Severus dark eyes.
"Hm, perhaps a dark and mysterious man you met on a train is more of your type." Otakemaru says, teasing her.
Paige doesn't respond to him. Still thinking of his eyes.
"Oh, Paige might actually have a little crush on the guy?" Otakemaru asks, getting excited.
"Shut-up. I don't have a crush on him." Paige says to him in her head as she rolls her eyes.
"Well, we will see. Don't forget I can hear all your thoughts kid." Otakemaru whispers.
"How could I ever forget." Paige thinks to herself as she opens her hotel room door again.
She sees that Severus is still standing there.
"I thought I would wait to escort you." He says as he notices Paige is a little shocked to see him there.
"Of course, thank you." Paige says politely.
"This way." He says, turning to walk back down the hallway.
Paige shakes off the awkward feeling and follows him down the hallway. He stops at another room to the right of the staircase. As they enter, Paige notices a large wooden circular table with wooden chairs all around it. There was a giant fireplace that made up most of one wall near the table. There was shot glasses set on the table with what Paige assumed was the whiskey Dumbledore ordered. Dumbledore is standing in the corner of the room next to the fireplace with Madam Rosmerta.
"Ah, Captain Asher, Severus please have a seat." Dumbledore says, waving his hand at the table. "Sorry to disturb you, but I thought I could get a quick word in with you before the rest of your crew arrives."
"Of course sir." Paige says, sitting down at the table.
"I'll go check on dinner." Madam Rosmerta says, excusing herself from the room.
As soon as the door shut, Dumbledore quickly sits down next to Paige, grabbing her hands.
"We don't have much time." Dumbledore whispers, leaning in closer to Paige. "People I can trust is on a very short list, especially ones from over seas."
Paige leans in closer to him.
"There are some who will refuse to hear this sort of information, but I know you will use your judgement and believe me." He continues. "I know this is going to be hard to believe but I have reason to believe the Dark Lord is planning on making a return."
"Is this linked with the Dark Mark that happened at the Quidditch World Cup?" Paige asks him in a hushed tone.
"I think it was a warning. A warning that the Dark Lord is coming." Dumbledore says turning to Severus. "Severus is trying to use his connections to try and get more information, but it's looking like the rumors of his return are true."
Paige quickly glances over at Severus, then back to Dumbledore.
"I need you to remain indifferent with your team. I know you think you can trust all of them, but this is much bigger then thinking if you can trust them to have the same opinion as you." Dumbledore says, squeezing her hand. "I just want you to watch your back and double check people you think you can trust, because if Voldemort –"
Paige's body involuntarily twitches at the name.
"Does come back, there is going to be a divide. I need you to know who is on your side when the time comes." He continues.
Dumbledore looks over at Severus
"I want you to contact Professor Snape here every night. I can use someone like you outside the school to relay messages back to people I trust." Dumbledore says as he digs into his pocket and pulls out a folded piece of parchment paper. "It's just the address of the letters I'm going to ask you to send. Just open it later when you're alone."
Paige takes the piece of paper from him. Just then the door opens to the room. Paige quickly shoves the paper in her pocket before turning towards the door. Ripley, Yankis and Hernandez walk into the room.
"Did we interrupt something?" Ripley asks as he stops in the entrance of the room.
"Of course not, come in! Have a seat! Dinner should be ready in a minute." Dumbledore says, standing up from the table.
Paige glances over at Severus who is looking at her. He looks away when he notices her look at him. Bobcat enters with Madam Rosmerta, a floating tray following behind them.
"Thought I'd start you guy off on some Pumpkin and Salamander soup. Warm your bodies from the inside out." Madam Rosmerta says with a smile as she flicks her wand.
The bowls of soup float and land on the table neatly in front of five of the chairs. The team quickly sit down at the table with the smell of the soup wafting in the air.
"Severus and I will leave you to your meal. Captain, if you could meet with Severus sometime tomorrow morning for a tour of the grounds. Say ten o'clock?" Dumbledore says, looking between both Paige and Severus.
"Yes sir." Paige says looking back at him.
"Goodnight." Dumbledore says as both him and Severus leave the room.
Her thoughts wonder to back to Severus' dark piercing eyes. Staring at her.
"Not a fan of Pumpkin there Asher?" Ripley asks, noticing Paige hasn't touched her soup.
"Hm?" Paige replies, snapping out of her thoughts.
"Just couldn't help but notice you weren't eating." Ripley says, pointing his soup spoon at her bowl.
"Oh-no I'm good. I was just waiting for it to cool down a bit." Paige lies, picking up her soup spoon.
Paige dips her spoon in the soup. Ripley watching her intently as she brought the spoon to her mouth.
"A toast." Hernandez says before Paige could put the spoon in her mouth.
Paige drops the spoon back in her bowl as Hernandez grabs one of the shot glasses off the table. Paige and the rest of the team grab one as well and they hold them in the air.
"Every day behind, prepared you for the days ahead." Hernandez says as they all clank their glasses together.
