Three Days Later
"Okay everyone, make sure you are fastened to the saddle. I don't want anyone to fall off into the ocean." Koll reminded his class. Ever since the first lesson, many Vikings watched as he taught. A few even joined. Now they were going on their first flight. He looked at the class one more time. Valka had chosen not to have a saddle, despite the advice of everyone. Her defense, she trusted Cloudjumper. Koll had to admit that she cared for dragons deeply. He went to Fishlegs who was holding onto the saddle for dear life while Meatlug stomped on the ground excited. The Twins had their devious smiles on top of Barf and Belch. Gustav scratched the head of Fanghook. Then he went to the new students. Astrid was petting Stormfly. Snoutlout had his arms folded smugly. Koll knew that Snoutlout was only here to prove that Dragon Riding was easy. He proved it wasn't when Hookfang lit his butt on fire. A hilarious day for Berk. As Koll inspected the saddle, he has Snoutlout didn't fasten the straps. Koll and Toothless walked over.
"I didn't do anything wrong. Let's get a move on." Snoutlout remarked smugly and Koll simply lightly pushed the Viking. Snoutlout yelled as he landed on the dirt.
"You need to fasten the straps." Koll replied before helping the Viking with the saddle. Koll jumped on Toothless and they all walked to the cliffside. "Last chance. Anyone want to quit?" he asked but silence. "Good. Let's go." Koll added and the dragons opened their wings. They all jumped off and took flight. Koll watched to make sure they were flying correctly and not struggling. After giving a few pointers, they were flying alright. Koll saw smiling faces. He guided them in flight for a few hours until he lead them back to Berk. When they landed on the cliffside, he saw Stoick and his daughter wave at their mother. Valka grabbed one of Cloudjumper's talons and the Stormcutter gently sat the woman down on the ground. Frida ran into her mother's arms and Valka hugged the little girl. Valka turned to show Frida Cloudjumper and the little girl was memorized by the peaceful dragon. Koll gave a fake smile knowing that he will never have a moment with his family.
"You alright?" Astrid asked from behind and Koll turned. Toothless and Stormfly began to play together.
"Yeah. Just thinking." Koll answered turning back to see Stoick edging closer to the dragon under pressure from both his wife and daughter.
"You're thinking about the joy a family can bring?" Astrid added and Koll nodded.
"Yeah. I wished I knew who they were." Koll replied.
"Well, maybe one you can find them." Astrid said trying to comfort him.
"Yeah, well I lost the only thing that could tell me who they are." Koll remarked still remembering the painful sting of losing the medallion. The only clue to home.
"Don't lose hope. The Chief and Chieftess haven't lost hope for their son. One day you will find them and that Hiccup will be found." Astrid promised and Koll gave a real smile.
"This is as far as I'm going near that thing." Stoick said and both Valka and Frida laughed. Valka had enjoyed the flight. The wind through her hair, the air in her lungs, it all felt so free.
"Oh come on Stoick, Cloudjumper wouldn't hurt a fly." Valka promised to an unconvinced Stoick.
"I've seen what dragons can and won't do. No moving any closer." Stoick replied as Koll walked towards him.
"Chief, I want to ask you a question." Koll greeted nervously. Stoick raised an eyebrow.
"What?" Stoick asked and Valka decided to walk closer with her daughter just in case.
"I was wondering if the Riders could bring their dragons home?" Koll asked.
"No. Absolutely not. I will not allow dragons in my village." Stoick answered sharply and Valka put her hand on his shoulder.
"I agree with Koll. The Dragons haven't acted aggressively towards us. I believe they won't to the village either." Valka remarked and Stoick tossed his hand in the air.
"If anyone is harmed by these dragons, I will hold you personally responsible." Stoick warned Koll before walking away. Valka nodded at the young Rider before walking with Frida to her side and Cloudjumper behind her. The village eyed her confused and prepared to slay the Stormcutter if he moved the wrong way. When reached her home, Cloudjumper found a nearby tree to hang from. Valka smiled seeing such a magnificent creature living peacefully on Berk.
That Night
Koll and Toothless were in the woods relaxing under the stars with Spitelout watching them. Then came the bells. Explosions and yells were heard and Koll jumped on the Night Fury. Within moments they were in the village. A dozen dragons in the air. None of which were of the Riders. They didn't have enough practice, but Koll did. He and Toothless glide down blasting the ground in between a Deadly Nadder and Sven's sheep. This earned the dragon's attention and shrieked. Toothless roared back before firing a warning shot. The Nadder flew away and the two friends turned to the others. Toothless tackled a Monstrous Nightmare to the ground freeing the sheep it was trying to steal. Toothless let out a roar and the Nightmare fleed. Before they could go back to the air, a Hideous Zippleback covered the ground in gas. They launched into the sky before the gas ignited. Toothless let out a roar and the dragons fleed. Koll and Toothless landed in the village where cheers were given. Thanks to the Dragon Rider, they only lost a few sheep and fewer homes burnt. Koll just nodded his head when Stoick walked to the young man.
"Good work." the Chief remarked before walking away, but that is all Koll needed. The two walked back to their camp and saw Valka nodding in approval from her safe hut.
"Told you there could be peace between Vikings and Dragons." Valka remarked to Stoick as he entered their home. He nodded in defeat.
"So Koll isn't that bad of a man." Stoick replied. When the raid began a Monstrous Nightmare was about to attack their hut, but it left letting the family live. Thanks to the eels Koll talked about. Now Stoick had to admit that the Rider may be helpful. He was going have to call the Berk Council for a meeting tomorrow, but for now, he was focused on his wife who looked at the shield Gobber made for Hiccup when he grew up. Stoick put his arms around her.
"I wished we could have this peace before Hiccup was taken." Valka said.
"I know." Stoick replied still feeling it was his fault for focusing on the Raids more than his own home. "We'll find him. One day."
"I know." Valka remarked before the two retired to bed.
Next Morning
Koll entered the Great Hall with many cheering for him. The raid last night was great for Berk. They lost little and several Vikings wanted to learn more about his ways of dealing with Dragons. The young man agreed as he got some breakfast. As Koll ate, he wondered why the dragons last night were so aggressive. Even for survivors. His theory was the Queen of their nest was forcing them to raid for food. Why, he doesn't know. It all depends on the dragon. But for now, he enjoyed the cheers. He saw his students eating at a table except for Valka who wasn't here. She was with her family. A sharp reminder that Koll had no one. As he distracted himself, Astrid appeared behind him.
"So what are we going to do today?" Astrid asked for today's Dragon Training lesson. Koll turned to her.
"Well I was going to lead you guys on a flight to the South." Koll answered knowing that Drago was North.
"How about you let me or Valka lead. While you try to remember what your medallion looked like." Astrid remarked giving Koll a smile. He understood she wanted to help, but he only had a few good looks at the medallion. He couldn't get an accurate design for it.
"You only had one flight. Maybe a few more flights." Koll replied and Astrid sat next to him.
"Well, you deserve a break. You change Berk's heart last night. You showed us that fighting isn't the only path." Astrid remarked giving Koll another smile.
"That may be true, but I'm still just a stranger without a family to go to." Koll added.
"You still got Toothless. He's your family." Astrid replied and Koll nodded. Toothless was the closing thing Koll had to a real family.
Later
"Okay Koll did a good job last night and he hasn't asked for anything." Gobber said to the Berk Council. Stoick sat in silence thinking of what the young man has done. He made peace with the captured dragons. Dragons that once tried to kill the Berkians. Then he saved Berk from a raid. Koll even made Valka smile. Only a few could do that nowadays.
"Yes we know Gobber, but he has asked to train dragons on Berk beforehand." Spitelout remarked.
"And think of what we could do with a team of Dragon Riders. Koll proved what one can do. He is the key to peace among the beasts." Gobber added.
"So what are you suggesting we do Gobber?" Sven asked knowing that Gobber was planning something.
"He has shown that we can trust him. He kept his word on everything and helped us. All the while he is living in the woods. I say we build a simple hut for him. It is clear that he might not be leaving anytime soon since he lost his key to his family." Gobber answered and everyone on the Council was surprised. Stoick has thought of the same thing, but he didn't have full trust in the lad. He was secretive about his past, but Stoick also understood why. Koll did seem to be staying on Berk and it would be cruel to leave him in the cold woods. So a vote was held to determine what will happen.
