En un mundo en donde la civilidad es algo en peligro de extinción y los muertos se levantan para devorar a los vivos no cualquiera es capaz de sobrevivir, por más duro que se considere. En ocasiones tal vez sea mejor resignarse, perder la esperanza y dejar de luchar.

Un día parece poco tiempo, pero en este mundo esas 24 horas son más que suficientes para derruir las mentes débiles y colocarlas al borde la histeria. Las esperanzas decaen lentamente en el grupo y la tensión aumenta. Henry sigue siendo el protagonista. Ahora está acompañado de Frank y Lizz.

En esta primera parte Henry es el protagonista. Estados Unidos está siendo destruido por los muertos vivientes y cinco días después del inicio de la invasión de caminantes, la moralidad humana comienza a decaer al ver que le quedan pocas esperanzas a pesar del corto tiempo que los muertos han pasado caminando sobre la tierra.
