A/N: Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there. I hope you have a wonderful day. NC
Chapter 10
Jody woke early the next morning and felt Dean's warm body pressed against her back still asleep. She carefully slipped from the bed so not to wake him and picked up her clothes before heading to the bathroom. She was going to get a quick shower before Dean woke. Once she finished the shower, Jody decided she might as well be useful and do a load of clothes for them.
After finding a laundry basket in the closet, Jody started gathering what she thought were dirty clothes. She picked up young Dean's clothes from the floor and felt in the pockets of his shorts, pulling out several rocks, acorn, spent bullet shells, and some shiny piece of smooth metal that she put on the dresser. It was amazing what kids would collect and bring home.
She found a pile of Sam's dirty clothes and added them to the basket after checking his pockets too. She removed loose change, a couple crumpled bills, pen knife, and wadded receipts putting it on top of the dresser where Dean couldn't reach it. Seeing another duffel in the corner, she picked it up sure this was Dean's clothes and started pulling them out deciding she might as well wash them, so he'd have them when he returned to his normal size.
Jody picked up Dean's jacket seeing it was dirty and started emptying the pockets. She shook her head as she pulled change, bills, couple bullets, two knives, receipts, small flask, couple of paper clips, bandanna, and a pocket watch that she piled on top of the dresser. She chuckled to herself thinking Dean was a pack rat no matter his age. With her basket full, Jody went back down to her room and checked Dean before heading downstairs to start a pot of coffee and put the clothes in to wash.
Jody was reading a book and sipping on her coffee when Dean made an appearance.
"Good morning sweetie," Jody greeted him warmly.
"You got up," Dean whined rubbing his eyes and looking at her like she did something wrong.
"I know, but it was early, and I didn't want to wake you. I knew you'd come down when you woke up."
"Oh."
"So, what are we having for breakfast this morning?" she asked changing the subject.
"Pie."
"Nope, can't have pie for breakfast honey. How about some scrambled eggs and toast?"
"Okay. Can I have chocolate milk and maybe some bacon?"
"That I can do. It won't take me long to whip this up. I guess no matter your age some things don't change," Jody chuckled merrily. She got up and went to the fridge for milk, eggs, bacon, and butter. She found a frying pan to cook the bacon first and then the eggs. She got the bread out to butter before popping it in the toaster oven. After whisking the eggs, Jody set them aside until the bacon cooked, then she poured them into the pan to start cooking and turned on the toaster oven to cook the bread. When it was done, she divided the food between two plates and took them to the table. "I'll get your chocolate milk made and we can eat."
"Okay," Dean nodded picking up a piece of egg with his fingers to eat as he waited on Jody to sit down.
"Here you go, chocolate milk as requested. Eat up while it's hot and we'll get our day started with feeding Rufus."
"Okay," Dean replied forking a lump of eggs and putting it in his mouth. "Rufus is a good dog."
"That he is. I bet you love playing with him."
"Yeah, but he gets slobbers all over my face, ugh!"
"He's just giving you dog kisses," Jody chuckled watching Dean as he made silly faces. She was going to hold on to these memories because they were precious, but she couldn't stop the ache that began to build in her chest as her thoughts drifted to her own son that she lost at a young age.
"Watch Jody," Dean broke into her thoughts.
Jody looked back up to see Dean blowing into the straw she had put in his milk and making bubbles that filled the top of the glass.
"I see, just don't go making a mess young man," she laughed when a bubble popped on his face making him scrunch his face.
"I won't," Dean giggled taking a napkin to wipe across his mouth and chin. "Jody…"
"Yes sweetie."
"You're a good babysitter. I like that you play with me."
"Why thank you Dean."
"You know Uncle Bobby's not married. Do you like him?"
Jody looked rather perplexed and shocked that Dean would even think of something like that, and she wasn't sure what to say. She sipped her coffee and thought about it before answering.
"I do like your Uncle Bobby, but we're friends. He's helped me out of a few jams and keeps my car running,"
"Oh, okay," Dean replied. "I can throw a Frisbee now, Sam taught me," Dean continued hopping to another subject without batting an eye.
"Is that so? Well, you'll have to show me then. I bet you picked it up very quickly. You're a smart boy."
"I am," Dean boasted poking out his chest proudly.
Jody had to chock back her laughter at Dean's antics and coughed lightly into her napkin being sure Dean didn't think she was making fun of him and get upset with her.
"Why don't you run upstairs and brush your teeth, and can you get out some clothes to wear?"
"Yes, Sam showed me where they were so I could get them."
"Good then, off with you now and I'll get these dishes done."
Dean slipped from the chair and trotted into the other room to head upstairs get ready for the day. He brushed his teeth first before going into the bedroom to find some clothes to wear. He pulled the drawer out and looked at the clothes for a moment before snagging a pair of shorts, socks, and T-shirt. Dean moved to the bed and laid his clothes out before taking off his pajamas and dressing. He sat on the bed to put on his sock and noticed something shiny on the top of the other dresser just out of his reach.
Being a curious five-year-old, Dean had to see what it was. He went into the bathroom for his stool and brought it into the bedroom to stand on. Holding on to the dresser, Dean reached up and moved the bandanna and picked up the silver flask to look at it. He turned it over in his hand for a moment before putting it back. He picked the gold watch up and found the clasp to open it, looking closely at it before closing it back.
Dean stepped off the stool with the watch still in his hand. He absently slipped it into his pocket and took the stool back to the bathroom before heading downstairs. He found Jody in the kitchen waiting on him and headed for the backdoor with Jody close behind him. Dean ran across the yard toward the crushed vehicles calling for Rufus to let him know he was out there.
Jody rounded the corner to find Dean hugging the big dog and talking to him in a muffled voice. He buried his face into the dog's coarse fur for a moment before giving him a kiss and skipping to the building to get a scoop of food out for him. He took it to Rufus' bowl and dumped it in. Jody washed out his water bowl and refilled it, giving the dog a good scratch behind the ears.
"You're a loving dog," Jody mumbled to him as he went to his food bowl to eat.
"Can we play Frisbee?" Dean asked hopping toward her.
"Sure, I want to see that throw and I have something else I think you will like for us to do too."
"Really? What is it?"
"You'll see; let's walk around the road again," Jody suggested.
"Okay," Dean huffed and took off down the road, stopping here and there when something caught his attention. He'd stop and squat to investigate whatever he found before hopping up and moving on. When they got back around to the backyard, Dean ran to the deck and got his Frisbee out of the bucket to play with. "Here's the Frisbee Jody," he called to her.
"Okay, let's see what you've got," Jody told him. She stepped back from him and watched him position his hand on the side and bite his tongue in concentration. Dean flipped the disc toward Jody and watched it sail through the air and drop before getting to her. "That was good Dean. Okay, here it comes back."
Dean kept his eyes on the Frisbee as Jody threw it and ran to try and catch it. It took both hands, but he clutched it to his chest and smiled widely at Jody holding up the Frisbee.
"That was awesome Dean. Give it a toss back."
"Here it comes."
They tossed the Frisbee for half an hour and then Jody went inside to get them something to drink and to bring her surprise out.
"Here you go Dean, sit down and rest a bit and drink this," Jody told Dean handing him a juice box.
"What's in the bag?" Dean inquired as he sat on the steps eyeing the bag, she brought out with her.
"You'll see," Jody smiled sipping on a bottle of water.
"I'm not tired," Dean assured her as he wiped his face.
"You might not be, but I need a short break. I'm not as young as I used to be."
"Okay," Dean shrugged leaning back on the steps. "But you don't look that old."
"Why thank you sweetie," Jody replied. She drank a little more water before picking up her bag and looking inside before looking over at Dean who was craning his neck to try and see. She looked in the bag again before pulling out a bubble paddle and bottle of bubbles.
"Bubbles!" Dean exclaimed sitting his empty juice box down and standing up.
"Yes, I figured all kids love to play with bubbles." Jody opened the bubbles and poured some into the pan and dipped the paddle into it. She waved it through the air producing an abundance of bubbles that floated out through the air around Dean.
Dean squealed with delight as he started chasing the bubbles around the yard as a warm breeze blew them all around. Dean's cries had Rufus coming around to investigate and he joined in with the fun of chasing the bubbles. Dean took the paddle from Jody and fanned it through the air several times before running after the bubbles with Rufus.
Jody pulled her cell out and started taking pictures as Dean continued to play until all the liquid bubbles were gone. He had splotches of bubbles in his hair, damp spots on his shirt, and sticky place all over his arms and legs from where the bubbles popped against his skin.
Dean got one of Rufus' rope tugs and played tug of war with him, trying to pull him around the yard, but Rufus had other plans and drug Dean around making him stumble after him until he slipped and fell.
"Rufus, no!" Dean screamed and laughed as the dog pulled him along, shaking his head to dislodge Dean.
"I think you lost sweetie," Jody laughed. "Why don't we head inside, and you can get cleaned up? You can play with the building blocks and build me something."
"Okay," Dean agreed letting go of the rope so he could get up. He was sweaty and breathing hard as he made his way over to Jody.
"You want to give Rufus a treat before we go in?"
"Yeah, he'll like that," Dean agreed running over to her.
"Let me get it. I know Bobby keeps them in the laundry room." Jody went inside and came back out with a rawhide chew for the dog. She gave it to Dean who called Rufus over and offered him the treat. Rufus took the chew and lumbered to a shaded area nearby where he started gnawing on his treat.
"Let's go upstairs so I can clean you up," Jody told Dean ruffling his hair.
"Okay," Dean sighed, tired but not wanting to admit it.
They headed upstairs and Jody washed the dirt and sticky liquid from his arms and legs. She ran the washcloth over his hair before combing it out. She decided that was good enough until tonight when he could take a shower. After going back downstairs, Dean settled on the floor in the living room to play with the building blocks. He dumped them out in the floor and started separating them by color trying to decide what to build. He was laying on his stomach and felt an object digging into his hip. Dean had forgotten about the pocket watch and pulled it out putting it in the tub out of the way.
Jody sat in the kitchen and watched Dean as he worked on building his creation. He was meticulous and worked slowly wanting everything to be perfect. She listened closely and could hear him humming a song as he worked but she couldn't place it. She was going to get up after she rested and get them some lunch made. By the time it was ready, it would be time to eat.
A/N: All kids love bubbles, couldn't resist. I hope you are enjoying these fun chapters of Dean being able to be a kid. I do like reviews/comments. NC
