Along the way, the group runs into a dark-haired drifter with laughing blue eyes who eventually becomes more than a stranger passing in the night.

On a return journey home after a strenuous two week job of carrying out line shack repairs and replenishing the food stores, Adam comes across an unconscious and very wet young woman who needs help.

Ben’s guilt-ridden slump during the Prime of Life unearths painful memories for his oldest son. Despite this, the boys try their hardest to meet the contract deadline on their own. With the household finally settled down after Adam's return from college, a new storm cloud is gathering around Hoss, making him distracted and surly. Prodded by Ben, Adam agrees to spend time with his brother and allow him to talk about what's bothering him, if he wants to. He discovers the cause, but must also make a memory journey back to meeting a kind shopkeeper in Illinois.

Joe had returned from his harrowing experience through the desert. Upon first appearance all seems normal as Joe seems to be wanting to dive right back into life at the ranch. Things are not however as they seem. Out of seven people only three made it back. The law will soon discover that the dead did not die naturally. What secrets are Joe and the others holding on to?
