Jade was lying in a medical bed. She didn't remember much other than passing out after they'd escaped. She was sore where she'd been kicked, and she had one rather spectacular headache from the psychic. Turning in the bed, she put her feet on the floor, and slowly stood up
"Impatient are we?" Muher said, from where he was sitting.
"I shouldn't take up the bed any longer, I'm functioning, and I can stand. I'm going back to my berth," Jade said, she was a little shaky as she gathered her things from the table. She headed towards the exit of the room she was in.
"I think not," Muher said. "You have a meeting to attend."
"Can it wait?" Jade asked, glancing at Muher.
Muher shook his head, "Unfortunately not, Lokey Fenfyr has asked me to bring you to him once you woke up."
"In that case, the sooner we get this meeting over with, the sooner I can rest. Lead the way, General," she said.
Muher led Jade to Fenfyr's office, "Fen, are you available?"
"Come in," Fenfyr replied, as they entered. "I understand you're still recovering, but thank you for meeting with me."
Jade nodded, "If it had been anyone else asking for a meeting, I would request a reschedule." Jade stood in front of Fenfyr.
"How is the case coming?" Fen asked.
"We are waiting on the drone that I ordered," Jade said. "All reports have verified that the rogue weaver is staying where he is for the moment."
"Do you know why you've been working on those reports for Muher?" Fenfyr asked.
"He hates paperwork, so he asks me to type up the case reports for him," Jade said.
"Yet this is the first time you've seen something outside the norm with the reports that you were sent, correct?" Fenfyr asked.
"To be fair, I thought that was a mistake that I received that report. I was advised later that it was intentional," Jade said.
"You've been doing this work since the Titan Event, correct?" Fenfyr asked, knowing she would eventually figure it out.
Jade thought about it. Darius had been the one to assign her to the Lynx with Muher. Darius, had been the one to find her. "Darius had asked him to keep sending them to me. Maybe he wanted me to look for inconsistencies," Jade said.
"Correct, he felt your instincts were good enough to serve as a second pair of eyes. Until the case you are now working on, everything seemed logical in the reports and their resolutions, correct?" Fenfyr asked.
"That's correct, I saw nothing wrong with how the cases were handled." Jade confirmed, "They were handed as they should have been, based on the situation.
"Yes, and you found the inconsistency that we'd missed. We felt, that we could train you outside of the usual channels due to these facts," Fenfyr said.
"Which is why you brought in Alden Soldat. Because he could be trusted with this, and he has enough knowledge to train me," Jade realized where this was going.
"Correct, given this information, are you willing to continue doing the tasks we've given you? We can take all these duties away, returning you to just being the anchor reporter for DENN, doing interviews where needed. Unfortunately, we'd be unable to seal your gift. Alden has confirmed, at your current training level, you'd be able to get by without being overwhelmed by your gift." Fenfyr looked at Jade, waiting.
"What happens to the Winchesters if I walk away?" Jade asked.
"They will continue on as they have been. We have offered them a place in the Corps, and they will be trained to work in Intelligence," Fenfyr replied. "Whatever choice you make will not affect them. However, it will make the current case more difficult to solve without your aid. If you walk away, you will be removed from the case. Your authorization that you have restricted areas will also be revoked. You will be living in your office, instead of your berth, with no access to the compound outside of common areas."
"My duties for the general will end, and go back to being just a reporter, would I also lose Darius's sponsorship?" Jade asked Fen.
"Yes, he will still let you live in the compound, as I said, but you would have no further contact with him. The same would go for Taminick, although, she would remain your friend. What is your decision Jade Young? Will you go back to a normal life, or will you step up? Are you willing to take a risk, and train to become an Intelligence agent serving Guild and Dragon?" Fenfyr asked, his eyes meeting Jade's.
"I have three conditions," Jade said.
"What are they?" Fenfyr asked.
"First, I would like a raise," Jade said.
"Done, it won't be much, but we can add a little more to your paycheck." Fenfyr nodded.
"I would like a refresher in hand-to-hand combat, I need to learn how to avoid that kick that I took from Metz. The officer who got me needs a raise as well, considering what I did to him after he got me," Jade said.
"We will see to it, I am very glad you asked for combat training, as Muher has been itching to train you after your performance the other day," Fenfyr said, confirming that the second condition could be met.
"Three, I want never to have to wear any of those uniforms. I can't see myself wearing the style, especially as a journalist. It doesn't suit the image that you're wanting me to present," Jade said, giving her third condition.
Fenfyr laughed, "That's the easiest one, since we want you to appear as you are as much as possible. On official records you will be listed as a journalist, so no uniform required. We would also like you to learn Latin, it is required for the Intelligence officers."
"I can do that, I don't know how quick a study I will be though," Jade said.
"We can have your Alden teach you, I'm sure he'll love the challenge," Fenfyr laughed.
"I will make it as painful for him as possible," Jade grinned.
Fenfyr smiled at Jade, "You are dismissed, thank you for taking up the challenge."
"Yes sir, but right now all I want is a hot shower, and a cup of chai tea," Jade said, turning to Muher, "Will there be anything else, sir?"
"That will be all, Jade, I will be waiting to work with you on the field tomorrow morning, eight bells into the morning watch.
"I'll be there," Jade said, before leaving Fenfyr's office.
If Jade had looked back, she'd have seen another figure step out from where they'd been quietly sitting in an out of the way corner of his office. "She took that very well I think," Tristan Weaver stated as he slowly came up beside his best friend. He had recovered some from his injuries, but he wouldn't be moving at full mobility for some time.
"Better than I thought she would Tris, you will advise Alden?" Fenfyr asked, touching his forehead tufts to Tristan's chest.
"I will, and I'll set aside some time that he can be over here to teach her. He's currently assisting with this case; I don't think that will be too hard to arrange." Tristan nodded. "I don't think we should teach her Latin; her work doesn't require it. I will, however, take over her yoga and meditation courses from Alden."
"That, would be a most interesting turn of events, please let me know how that goes," Fenfyr said, laughing at the thought of Jade's face when Tristan showed up to teach her in yoga, instead of Alden. "I agree with your assessment that she should not learn Latin; I should have thought that through earlier during the meeting."
"I will indeed, I'll speak to Chris, to see when she will be free from his clutches." Tristan said, "I will see you soon my friend, we both have things that we need to be doing. They all need to be done yesterday," he added, with a chuckle.
"I will see you soon my friend, be careful going back to your quarters," Fen said, concerned for his friend's health until he fully recovered.
"I always am," Tristan said, as he left Fen's office.
In her berth, Jade was reading her book. Things had changed, and yet she couldn't be surprised at what she'd been told. Maybe she'd been too busy with her job to notice the obvious, but that didn't really change much. She would still strive to do her duties with attention to detail, and ensuring that the truth was reported. Four bells in the morning watch came early, she reached over and turned off her nightstand light. Setting her book aside, she set her alarm for four bells in the morning watch, and went to sleep.
