The team was huddled up in the cave's surprisingly homey living room watching a movie together late at night. This being one of those rare days off the League let them have together as a job well done, they decided to show the new girl around Happy Harbor a bit more. Dick thought she was alright. Eager, but then again who among them wasn't? She had a cool sass to her that, while nowhere near the level of Zatanna or even Artemis, was somewhat refreshing to be around. But to be honest, he didn't know much about her other than the fact that she certainly seemed to take a liking to Kaldur, a fact the Atlantean was all too oblivious towards.
Most of the team had fallen asleep by this hour, but Robin was wide awake. One of the downsides of living with Batman was that his sleep schedule was more out of sorts than any other teenager on the planet.
As he observed the many members of his ever-growing team, he noticed that pretty much all of them were out cold. M'gann was resting her head on Conner's shoulder while he was lying back on the couch, Raquel was curled up into a ball on the side of the couch, Kaldur was nestled rather comfortably in the recliner, and Wally was sprawled out on the floor in true KF fashion, as lazy and relaxed as ever. Artemis had taken it on herself to doodle all over his face the instant he dozed off, meaning the Wallman was now sporting a rather dashing sharpie goatee and monocle.
Dick's eyes then drifted to Zatanna, who was rather adorably resting her head up against Wolf's soft hide. It reminded him of when she had first shown up at the cave; she was almost immediately drawn to the large creature and took pretty much everyone by surprise when she pet him without any fuss whatsoever. Wolf never allowed himself to be pet by anyone who wasn't on the team, not even Superman, so a part of Dick was convinced that she had used a spell on the mutt when she first arrived.
Then again, she wouldn't exactly need to use a spell to charm him, now would she? Not like she used one on Dick…
As tiring for himself and several members of the team as it was getting, Dick was still head over heels for her. If anything, it had gotten worse over time. He tried to hide it, but he was doing a rather sucky job. Fortunately, all that had really come from the others knowing about his crush was Kaldur sending him knowing smiles whenever he and Zatanna were left alone together or the team's peppy Martian trying to matchmake them in weird ways she usually found from her TV shows. Well, that and Wally sending him the occasional sneer or taunt, to which he'd reply by trying to strangle him to death.
Like so many times before tonight, the Boy Wonder quickly found himself staring at the young sorceress, and for once, he made no move to break away. She looked so peaceful sleeping there, and it took a rather sizeable chunk of willpower for him not to go over and readjust her position to make it more comfortable for her. The way her midnight black hair draped over her shoulders, the softness of her pale skin, even the plumpness of her magenta-colored lips. He could never decide what feature of hers was his favorite because they all looked so perfect to him.
"Enjoying the view?" Dick jumped in his seat, a bright red flame lighting up his cheeks as he turned to the source of the disturbance. Artemis covered her mouth to hide her laugh as he did his best to glare at her.
"Shut up!"
"She really has got you wrapped around her pinkie. You're as helpless as Wally says." His blush grew as he tried to kick her from his position on the side of the couch, but she just rolled her eyes. Dick crossed his arms awkwardly.
"Is it really that obvious?" She shrugged.
"Only to everyone but her. I mean, there was that time you called her smokin' hot, but-"
"Beautiful. I said beautiful!" Artemis snorted.
"Yeah, but we all knew what you were thinking." Dick frowned, and Artemis noticed a wave of tension splash over him. "Relax, birdbrain. Trust me, Zee has no idea."
"How do you know?" Artemis smirked.
"Cuz she feels the same way about you. Take it from her best friend, this is a first for her as well."
Dick turned back to look at her, as dreamy as ever, and a new set of doubts entered his mind.
"How do you…how do I…how do I, like, impress her? Every time I go up to talk to her I feel like I'm short-circuiting on the inside. I can barely hold a conversation with her without dissolving into a puddle of goo."
The archer's smirk melted into a sweet smile.
"Just be yourself. That's who she likes, not some big macho guy trying to show off for her. You don't need to impress her, you just need to spend time with her."
"We've been spending time."
"Yeah, and it's working. She's just as bad for you as you are for her. The difference is that she has this thing called subtlety. If you paid more attention to how she acts around you instead of staring at her lower half you might've picked up on that by now."
Her words sparked a bit of hope inside the Boy Wonder.
Could…could Zatanna actually like him? Like, like him? The way he likes her?
No…he was too big of an idiot around her. He didn't deserve that. Did he?
Gears began to spin in his mind as he looked her over, and the archer just chuckled at his speechlessness before turning back to the TV.
A goofishly huge smile stretched across his face the more he thought about it.
He turned back to face Artemis, who was watching the movie with surprising interest. It felt kinda weird getting love advice from her, but truth be told, he was learning just how many layers to her there were more and more by the day. Batman was right to give her a chance, he thought. She deserved it, more than most people he could think of.
"Thanks." She grinned, not breaking her gaze on the screen for even a second.
"Don't mention it. Just go get me some popcorn. I wanna see how this ends."
