Chapter 2

Saturday morning had Dean and Deanna in the gym they set up to train in practicing hand to hand combat. Dean loved the time he got to spend with his niece, no matter what they were doing.

"That's it, Ladybug," Dean praised her as she practiced punching his upturned hands. "Remember what I taught you."

"Let the attacker do all the work and use his weight to your advantage," Deanna parroted back to him. "You don't need to make the first move. Never take your eyes off your opponent."

"That's right. No need wearing yourself out before the fight even gets started. Now, do you remember how to break this type of hold?" Dean asked as he grabbed Deanna and before he could say anything else found himself on the mat looking up into the mischief face of his niece.

"Like that?" she asked innocently, smirking at him.

"That works for me," he grunted pushing himself up from the floor. He had to admit, she was getting better all the time. "I'm getting too old for this," he complained stretching his back and wincing. Dean looked to Deanna waiting for a comeback but noticed she seemed lost in thought.

"You okay Ladybug?" he questioned.

"Yes, I'm fine."

"You know if you wanna talk about anything, I'm here for you."

"I know Uncle Dee, thanks. It's fine."

"Okay, you know where to find me."

"Hey Cas," Deanna greeted the angel when he let himself into the gym. "You need something?"

"Sam wanted me to come find you and let you know lunch will be ready in fifteen minutes," Castiel informed them in his monotone voice. He looked lovingly at his charge as she smiled at him.

"Thanks, we're almost done training and will be in," she responded. "You want to do a little sparring?"

"I think not; it didn't go well last time," Castiel replied, cocking his head to look at her.

"Yeah, it's like hitting a brick wall," Dean added looking to the angel for a moment. He had gotten pissed at him when he first came to stay with them and threw a punch breaking his hand. Castiel healed his hand and Dean didn't do that again. They came to an understanding and things were better after that.

"I am a celestial being Dean," Castiel shrugged.

"Yeah Uncle Dee, you should have known better," Deanna teased.

"So, you're on his side now?" Dean growled at them. "You two have fun, I'm heading inside."

"I'll be in shortly Uncle Dee," Deanna called to him as he left. "What happened on the hunt that Uncle Dee doesn't want me to know?" she questioned Castiel once Dean was out of ear shot.

"Dean told me not to say anything," Castiel replied. "He can be very persuasive…"

"How bad was it?"

"I was able to heal his injury after he killed the monster."

"You're not going to tell me the rest are you?"

"Your father is calling for you," Castiel told her as he cocked his head like he was listening to something only he could hear.

"Okay, let's go get something to eat," Deanna sighed knowing it wouldn't do any good to question the angel further.

Castiel had learned to be evasive over the years to stay out of trouble and when to be tight lipped and not say anything. It was hard at first learning to deal with all the human emotions that he had never felt before but now he considered he had made large leaps and bounds in improving that.

Sunday mornings were Deanna's favorite time. It was one day that most of them slept in and enjoyed some extra relaxation to recharge themselves. She would cook a big breakfast midmorning, and everyone gathered around the kitchen table to eat. They talked about the past week and the week to come. Everyone got caught up on what was happening in each others' lives and if there was anything urgent that needed to be handled. It was family time, and Deanna loved it.

"What's that I smell?" Dean asked as he strolled into the kitchen for his first cup of coffee.

"You know Uncle Dee," Deanna laughed. "I'm making French toast and of course bacon and fresh fruit."

"Be still my beating heart," Dean sighed taking in a deep breath.

"Hey honey, anything I can do to help?" Sam asked his daughter as he made his appearance, his hair still damp from a shower.

"No Dad, Cas is helping me," she replied glancing at Castiel who was setting the table and looked her way, smiling warmly at her.

"So, Skippy, has your superiors called you back to Heaven lately for a report on us?" Dean asked as he took a seat at the table to sip his coffee. He knew Castiel had still been going back to Heaven over the years he had been staying with them. He would never really talk about what went on while he was there, other than to say he just gave an update of what he had learned about humans.

"No, I haven't been to Heaven in a while now. I can still hear angel radio but nothing of importance has been broadcast."

"Maybe they got tired of keeping tabs on us," Sam offered sitting down by his brother. "Where's Bobby?" he asked when he realized he was absent.

"Early morning tow job, I told him I'd save him some breakfast," Deanna told them as she cooked the French toast. She already had the bacon in the oven keeping it warm. "Cas, can you get the fruit and juice out of the fridge for me?"

"Of course," Castiel answered before moving to the fridge to do as requested.

"How 'bout we head for town and maybe catch a movie or do some shopping?" Sam asked everyone.

"I'm game Dad," Deanna piped up. "You know I love going to the movies."

"Count me out, I'm taking a 'me day' and doing nothing," Dean told them using air quotes.

"Awe, come on Uncle Dee," Deanna begged as she sat the platter of toast on the table and went to the stove to get the bacon from the oven. She sat the syrup, butter, and jam on the table and glanced around to be sure everything was in place.

"Nope, I'm good sitting on the couch watching some sports. Come to papa!" Dean hummed as he put some bacon on his plate before adding a couple pieces of toast.

"It looks good honey," Sam praised her as he helped himself to toast and fruit.

"Thanks Dad," Deanna replied taking some food and passing the platters to Castiel who slipped toast and bacon onto his plate. Even though he didn't have to eat, he had learned to enjoy food over the years and had started looking forward to it.

"Skippy, why don't you stay with me and let Sammy and Ladybug have some daughter and Daddy time?" Dean suggested.

"I can do that if Deanna thinks they'll be okay," Castiel replied.

"We'll be fine Cas. You can take a break too," Deanna offered. "I'll be with Dad, and I know how to take care of myself."

"If you should need me, pray," Castiel told her giving her a meaningful look.

"I will, don't worry," she agreed before popping a piece of fruit into her mouth and biting into the juiciness and sweetness of the piece. "I'm going to miss getting the good fresh fruit when winter gets here."

"You outdid yourself Ladybug," Dean sighed as he chewed his last bite of bacon and sat back rubbing his stomach.

"You say that about everything I cook Uncle Dee," Deanna giggled.

"I don't know; there's been a few things that didn't turn out that good."

"Well, at least you're honest."

"Okay, Skippy and me will clean the kitchen and do the dishes since you so graciously cooked."

"Great, I'm going to go take a quick shower and get ready to head into town," Deanna told them as she got up and took her dishes to the sink.

"I'll hold off washing the dishes until you're out. That way you won't be getting a cold shower," Dean told her as he pushed himself from the table, picking up his dishes to take to the sink.

"Thanks, you're the best." Deanna headed upstairs and to her room for clothes before going into the bathroom to shower.

"Did you like the movie?" Sam questioned his daughter as they walked out of the theater.

"I did, I've always liked Marvel Comics and the Avengers franchise is really good. I can't believe how they ended it with Iron Man dead. I'm sure they'll make some more of some kind," Deanna answered.

"When Rogers picked up Thor's hammer, now that was pretty awesome."

"Yeah and when all the others came back for the fight; that was some very good special effects."

"Shall we walk down main street and check out a few stores?" Sam asked unlocking his SUV so they could get in.

"Yes, I wanna check the used bookstore out."

"Okay then. Afterwards, why don't we stop by the soda shop for a shake or sundae?"

"I think I can handle that," Deanna smiled settling into the passenger seat so Sam could drive to a public lot at the end of main street. From there, they could walk down the street and window shop or go in any stores that interested them. He pulled into the lot and found a space.

"How's school going?" Sam questioned after they got out and started walking down the sidewalk, pausing to investigate the windows.

"It's fine," Deanna offered with a shrug looking away.

Sam could tell she wasn't saying something but didn't press her. Before he could anything else a voice called out to them.

"Winchesters," a female voice called ahead of them.

"Jody, hey, good to see you," Sam greeted the sheriff as she walked toward, them. He wrapped his long arms around her and gave her a hug. They had known Sheriff Jody Mills for a long time, and she had been adopted into their family. She knew about the supernatural and helped them from time to time on cases.

"I haven't seen you around lately. How is everyone doing?" Jody asked looking to Deanna and smiling. "My goodness Deanna, I swear you've grown an inch since I saw you several weeks ago. You're getting more beautiful every day."

"Hi, Aunt Jody. It's good to see you again. Dad says I'm having a growth spurt," Deanna said, hugging Jody.

"She takes after her Mom," Sam told her. "I see more of Jess in her every day."

"Well, she's got your eyes Sam and your height."

"Yeah, I'm taller than most girls in my class, but I don't mind. I like being tall."

"Good for you. You need to feel good about yourself and don't let anyone tell you differently."

"When are you going to come for dinner again Aunt Jody? Maybe this week?"

"I'll see what my schedule is like this week and will let you know. Is Dean home or out on a case?"

"He just got back a couple of days ago. Grandpa John is gone right now."

"So, are you guys out enjoying the last of the nice days before it gets colder?"

"Yes, I'm having some one on one time with Deanna."

"We went to the movies and now we're window shopping. Aunt Jody, do you have time to have a soda or milkshake with us?" Deanna asked excitedly. Jody was the only female she really had a relationship with, and she enjoyed their time together. She loved her family, but it was nice to talk to a female once and a while. Jody was the one who took her shopping for her first bra, showed her about makeup, though she wore very little, and talked to her about the changes her body would be going through. They talked about boys as she became interested in them, though Deanna had not really found any to her liking.

"Sure, why not," Jody agreed.

"Great," Sam nodded. "How's the job?" he asked as they started walking down the sidewalk toward the soda shop.

"About the same, you know how it is in a small town. We have the usual town drunks, bar fights, shop lifting, accidents, run of the mill things. But it keeps me busy at least."

"Guess you should feel lucky about that."

"Yeah. Are things going okay at home?" Jody asked softly when Deanna walked ahead of them.

"I think so, but I think something is bothering her, and she won't talk to me."

"I wouldn't be too worried Sam. Deanna's a teenager and going through a lot of changes. She's growing up on you and into a wonderful young woman. You should be proud of what you and the others have accomplished."

"I had a lot of help over the years, or I wouldn't have been able to do it. And that includes you too, Jody. I hope I remembered to thank you for all your help. You were a God sent when I needed it."

"It was my pleasure Sam. I'm glad you trusted me enough to let me be included in that. She's like a daughter I never had."

"You're family Jody, don't forget that."

"Come on slow pokes," Deanna called to them from the doorway of the shop. "There's a milkshake with my name on it waiting on me."

"I swear she sounds more like Dean every day," Sam laughed as he let Jody go ahead of him into the shop.

They joined Deanna at the counter to decide what they wanted. Once they got their orders, Deanna chose a table by the window so she could people watch while she enjoyed her treat. Every once and a while someone would pass who was thinking too loudly and she would catch bits of their thoughts, but never did it intentionally. Deanna would never invade a person's private thoughts or abuse her powers that way. They enjoyed their treats and the company. Sam and Deanna bid Jody goodbye and did a little more shopping before heading back home to find Dean sacked out of the couch asleep and Castiel watching a random movie on the television.
