Ch 8 Guilty Feelings

"Time to put on a good act," Kion said. Kopa nodded and the two brother screamed in horror. Kovu and Jasiri were already running down the side of the gorge as they saw Vitani and Nuka fall. Kopa and Kion ran down the side after their friends. When they reached the bottom they saw Vitani and Nuka laying at the bottom, not moving blood pooling all around them.

"Oh man," Kion whispered, the color draining from his face.

"What have we done?" Kopa whispered. Then he said in a much louder voice, "Me and Kion are gonna get help!" With that the creamy brown cub began to run up the side of the gorge. But Kion just stood there, his green eyes wide in horror. "Kion c'mon," Kopa said through clenched teeth. "We need to go before someone comes along and see us." But still Kion didn't move. "Ugh c'mon!" Kopa grunted, shoving his twin. This snapped Kion out of his funk and he shook his head.

"Yeah sure Kopa," the brown coated cub said softly. "I'm coming." With that Kion looked over at Vitani and Nuka, who were being tended to by Kovu and Jasiri. The Kion heard Simba calling his children from the top of the gorge. "Crap lets get out of here!" Kion said. With the he and Kopa took off. When they reached the top of the gorge they saw Simba searching around for his children. Making sure he remained hidden Kion said just loud enough for Simba to hear, "Look at the bottom of the gorge." This got Simba's attention and after looking around for a minute to see where the voice came from he ran down the side of the gorge. Satisfied Kion ran to catch up to Kopa and the twins ran full force back to the Outlands.

When Simba reached the bottom of the gorge the sight he saw made his stomach lurch. His precious children were laying at the bottom of the gorge, not moving, blood all around them. "Nuka!" Simba cried out, racing towards his fallen children. "Vitani! Kings Above what happened?!"

"We were just walking," Kovu said through the tears that were streaming down his face. "And s...suddenly Vitani and Nuka cried out and they...and they fell. I'm sorry King Simba. I should have been watching them better. I'm so sorry." Kovu broke down and began to sob loudly

"Hey now it'll be alright," Simba said softly, putting his paw around the shaking golden brown cub. "Don't blame yourself young one." Just then Simba heard someone call his name. Turing the golden King saw Zira running towards him, followed closely by Cala, Asha and Sarabi. When the four lionesses saw the horrific sight their eyes went wide and they let out horrified gasps.

"My babies!" Zira cried out, running over to Vitani and Nuka.

"They're alive Zi'," Simba said, giving his mate a nuzzle. "But barley. They need help but I'm afraid to move them. That might cause more damage."

"But Simba we can't leave them here," Zira said, her voice shaking. "They'll bleed to death down here."

"I'm sorry," Kovu sobbed, burying his face in Asha's front leg. "I'm sorry. This is my fault."

"Shh there now darling," Asha soothed, giving Kovu a comforting nuzzle. "No one blames you honey. I promise."

"Yeah," Jasiri chimed in. "Sides we both screwed up. Neither one of us did a very good job of keeping an eye on them." By now Jasiri's voice had become very soft as she blinked back the tears that were forming in her brown eyes. Cala wrapped her paw around her daughter and pulled her close and Jasiri snuggled into Cala's front leg.

"Perhaps we could help," a voice said. The group turned and to their great shock they saw a family of jackals coming towards them. The adults stepped in front of their children protectively and bared their teeth at the jackals.

"Whoa there easy now," the female jackal said. "We're not going to hurt you. We're here to help."

"Yeah right," Simba spat out, glaring at the jackal. "Why the Hell would you jackals help us?"

"Because we want to prove ourselves," the male jackal said. "We're not associated with Reirei and her Pack."

"Yes we want a better life for our pups," the female said, nodding toward three small pups that were hiding behind a rock. "And if you'll allow us we can help your children King Simba."

"What harm can it do?" Zira whispered. Simba looked at his mate then back at the jackals.

"Fine," the King said. "I'll allow you to help."

"Thank you Your Highness," the male said, dipping his head to Simba. With that the two adult jackals began to work on Vitani and Nuka.

"Hi there," one of the pups said to Kovu, coming out of the shadows along with his siblings. "I'm Moto and these are my sister Chana and my brother Kijana."

"I'm Kovu," Kovu said with a slight smile. "And this is my friend Jasiri."

"How's it goin'" Jasiri said with a wave. The pups smiled and waved back. Moto was about to speak when his parents finished their work.

"That should hold them until you get them home," the female said.

"Thank you uh...I'm sorry I didn't quite get your names," Simba said.

"Oh I'm Fauti," the female said. "And this is my mate: Kuato and our children: Moto, Chana and Kijana."

"Well Fauti you and your family can consider this to be your home," Simba said and he and Zira carefully picked up Nuka and Vitani.

"Thank you King Simba," Kuato said with a grateful smile.

"No thank you for helping our children," Zira said as she left with the others right behind her.

"Bye guys," Kovu said as he and Jasiri waved at the jackal pups.

"Bye!" Chana said, waving her paw excitedly as she watched her new lion friends leave.

"I hope this proves our case to Simba," Kuato said with a sigh.

"I'm certain it already did," Fauti said, nuzzling her mate. "And even if it didn't I'm glad we could help those poor cubs."

"So am I,' Kuato said. "So am I." With that the family went to get settled for the night.

Meanwhile back in the Outlands Kion was racked with guilt. The brown coated cub hated what he had done and he was really hoping that Nuka and Vitani weren't dead. Just then Kiara approached her brother. "Mother wants to see you," the light brown cub said. Kion said nothing. He merely nodded as he walked over to where Nala was waiting. Kopa was already there as was Sarafina.

"You wanted to see me Mother?" Kion asked.

"Yes I did," Nala said, motioning for Kion to come closer, which he did. "I'm proud of you Kion," Nala said, roughly patting Kion on his head. "You did well."

"Thank you Mother," Kion said, forcing himself to smile.

"Did I do good too Mother?" Kopa asked. "After all I helped."

"And you weren't even supposed to be with him!" Nala thundered, hitting Kopa hard in his face. "You're just lucky that you managed to do something right otherwise I'd give you twice the beating. Now get out of my sight!" With that Kopa and Kiara took off. "Get back to your training Kion!" Nala commanded, whipping her head towards her youngest son. "Now! We still have a brute to take down!"

"Yes Mother," Kion said as he ran to his training spot.

"Don't start with me Mother," Nala growled, glaring at Sarafina, who had been giving her a look.

"Why would I?" the older lioness asked. "I know you're far to gone to even listen." Without another word Sarafina walked away from her daughter, who was staring back in shocked silence.
