"Again!"
The blindfold is soaked in sweat, and stuck to his brow and cheeks, refusing to let go. The knot around his head is a bit too tight for comfort, but he's managing so far. It makes it hard to concentrate, but not impossible. Which is important since he's trying to avoid being in pain.
Something hard and warm slams into the side of his head and knocks him off balance, sending him tumbling to the floor on his knees. "Ohh, so close again, Izuku!" Ken says with way too much enthusiasm for this task. "I know my ki is a bit dense, but that was an easy one! I didn't even throw it that hard."
Well, avoiding pain and Ken-sensei's Constant. Unending. Taunting!
Izuku rolls off the floor and kicks up to a standing position before jumping to the side. He falls into a roll and then jumps again, twisting his body to dodge three warm projectiles that missed him by millimeters. He strains his ki to encompass the whole area, but at his current level of fatigue and the constant pressure Ken-sensei exudes, it's hard. He tries to listen for anything whistling through the air, but there's nothing but an uncomfortable amount of silence. He reaches for his ki once more, but falters in his footsteps, so his concentration breaks for a spilt second. But that opening way apparently all Ken-sensei needed to hit him with another small hadoken to the ribs. Izuku hits the floor and begrudgingly admits defeat while tearing the blindfold off.
"Couldn't we have slowed down just a bit?" Izuku says while panting. He tosses the blindfold to the flood and it hits it with a loud, wet slapping sound. A small sweat puddle forms around it. It's gross and Izuku curses the fact that Ken-sensei's ki is so warm. "This feels like way too much for a beginner."
Ken just snorts. "Hey, it was you who wanted to learn Ryu's Mind's Eye. We told you it would be very difficult, but you said, and I quote 'Plus Ultra', whatever that means."
Izuku groans but doesn't say anything. Ryu-sensei's Mind's Eye technique simply sounded too good to not attempt. It was essentially just an auto-parry ability. Meaning, if timed correctly, the body will simply react to whatever danger is around it, no matter what, where, nor when. It was a 'get out of jail free' card and Izuku just had to have it. The problem was the very, very strict timing on said technique. It, even if executed flawlessly, only lasted 1/60th of a second. But when he saw Ryu-sensei dodge, and parry himself, Ken-sensei, and some of Setsuna's parts all at once, he realized just how long 1/60th of a second could be in a fight.
"Take a break and we'll restart in twenty."
With that, Izuku shakily gets to his feet and heads to the showers, but not before passing the large, full walled mirror and pausing. It's been five years since he's joined this dojo and it's shown. Now fourteen, Izuku has hit something a growth spurt. He's now just shy of 5'5, and has put on enough muscle that he's had to throw out all of his old clothes and even these current ones were just a tad bit too tight around the bicep and thighs sometimes. Taking a small moment to admire what years of hard-work has done for him, he heard Ryoya snort behind him.
When he turns, he sees the tan boy with his hair out of its usual ponytail, having grown a few inches over time. It now reached just beyond his shoulders, but was no less messy than it'd always been. He'd have to get it cut soon before he starts looking homeless. His hair aside, he's also covered in sweat and his Gi is covered with burnt holes. He's always been taller than Izuku, and since they both gained access to ki, it only grew more apparent. He now stands at 5'8 and his more... *ahem* "pretty face" (Setsuna's words, not his) contrasted oddly with Izuku younger, slightly more chubby one.
"I never took you to be vain, Izuku." Ryoya deadpans. It took Izuku quite a long time to tell when the boy was joking or not since he almost always looked either confused, tired, blank or mildly annoyed about something. But now, after five years of friendship, he felt he knew Ryoya like the back of his hand.
Izuku nervously laughed. "Working on Heat Rush again?" He asked, expertly derailing the conversation.
Ryoya simply groaned as if the mere thought of the technique took years off his life. Izuku couldn't help but feel sympathy for him. When Ryu-sensei first told him about his own cloaking ability, the Denjin Renki, Izuku was excited to dive in head first, notepad in hand. And fifteen minutes later, found himself laying face down in a pile of his own sweat and twitching occasionally from the massive surge of electricity coursing through his veins. It wasn't pretty and he needed to medical attention, and that was under Ryu-sensei, the far, far more lenient and merciful of the two teachers. Izuku's heart truly goes out to Ryoya. Imagining Ken-sensei's training and with fire? No thank you.
"Ken is an animal." Ryoya said, far too tired and miserable to bother with formality, not that he was ever big on them anyway. "I don't think he realizes that he's a very large, grown man and he's kicking me like I stole from him. It's awful."
Izuku tries really hard not to laugh at that. Ryoya's deadpanned expression mixed with how his hair is a mess is making it hard though.
"We could take a day off and go to the mall. The girls brought it up in the group chat and you haven't said anything about it."
"No, I don't want to go." Ryoya said firmly.
Izuku simply nodded and walked away. In a second, Ryoya appeared next to him and grabbed his shoulder. "...that was too easy." He said suspiciously. "Normally, I have to literally fight you on these things."
Izuku just turned his head and smiled. Not his normal smile, but one that was just a bit too innocent and sent a shiver down Ryoya's back. "It's fine, friend. I'm not gonna force you."
Ryoya stood there for several long, agonizingly awkward seconds before backing away slowly, making sure to keep his guard up just incase Izuku snuck up on his with a Shoryuken like he did two weeks ago.
When Ryoya was firmly out of sight, (after stopping near the door and staring uncomfortably at Izuku for a few more seconds), the greenette grabbed his phone and started typing.
Super Street Fightin' Friends
ME: I asked him guys, he said no.
3D Printer: Of course he would.
Dino-City: Falcon-PUNCH It's your turn this time.
Falcon-PUNCH: Yeah, yeah I know. Calling him rn
Shhh: I still can't believe this works
ME: I know right? But I've known him for a while, I can kinda see it now.
Not three seconds later, Izuku heard Ryoya's phone ring.
ME: Wow, 15 seconds this time, nice job Itsuka.
Falcon-PUNCH: Momo still has the record of 10 seconds, but getting there.
It was a not so hidden secret in their little friend group that for as anti-social, quiet and honestly a bit intimidating as Ryoya was, he tended to have soft spots for people. No one knew why, Izuku had his theories of course, but wasn't stupid enough to voice them lest he be set ablaze, but whenever Ryoya adamantly refused to do anything, Izuku could always go to plan B. Get one of the girls to talk to him. Plan B was always much safer than Izuku simply nagging him until he relented since the girls were always at a near zero chance at being kicked in the face, whereas Ryoya and Izuku came to blows over a trading card Ryoya didn't even want.
Maybe Ryu-sensei and Ken-sensei's energy was rubbing off a bit too much on them.
Honestly, either or was fine. Ryoya was seemingly incapable of telling either of them "no" to anything, ever since they were ten years old. At least, for any real amount of time. Sure, there were times when he simply said no and ignored what followed, but over the years, it got increasingly harder for him to do so. On one occasion, during a group trip to a karaoke bar, Ryoya had fought a vicious war with Izuku when it came his time to sing. Of course, he knew that his tan friend was an exceptional singer even on his bad days, but no one else did. After some yelling and threats of bodily harm, Itsuka leaned over and simply asked him with an innocent smile on her face. He never stood a chance. After picking up their jaws and wiping some tears (mostly Izuku's and some of Momo's), Ryoya vowed to never sing in front of them again.
And four minutes and fifteen seconds later, he was back on stage.
Izuku's phone suddenly buzzed.
Hot-Stuff: I'm in this group too ya know
Hot-Stuff: I still haven't forgiven Setsuna for this name either.
Dino-City: Come on! it's perfect! You have that whole fire thing going on and you're pretty hot to look at, it's genius
3D Printer: I really envy your confidence sometimes, Setsuna.
Dino-City: ^_^! I'll meet you guys at Wookiees Mall in Kiyashi Ward in an hour.
Dino-City: Can Tetsutetsu come? He's been wanting to meet Izuku and Ryoya for a while now but somebody doesn't like to socialize. .
Shhh: Maybe if you shut up about Ryoya in school, he wouldn't be so curious.
Dino-City: YUI! Traitor!
Shhh: What? It's true, most of the time, you're just in class giggling about him in some way.
Dino-City: That's it, I'm throwing dirt on you later today.
Shhh: Jokes on you, I'm busy today and can't make it. So it's up to Itsuka to make sure you don't do anything to Ryo-kun.
Dino-City: nfieonfwfo
Hot-Stuff: Why does that sound vaguely threating? Am I in danger?
Falcon-PUNCH: Honestly? Hard to tell.
Hot-Stuff: I figured one of you would be the death of me one day, I was just hoping it'd be a bit further down the line.
ME: LOL
Shortly after Izuku and Ryoya showered, changed and left for the day, Ryu was approached by his long time friend.
Ken didn't look too happy about something, as evident by his phone dangling from his hand. "That was just Jack. He said he's going back to the U.S soon due to some family issues and can't home school Ryoya anymore."
Shit. Ryu thought. That was an issue. Ryoya, ever since being unofficially adopted by Ryu, had always been home schooled by the dojo. There were several reason for that. First, and most pressing, was that both Ryu and Ken agreed that Ryoya simply couldn't attend public school in the state they found him in. He was young, scared and angry and if he was allowed to go to a public school with the way people treated quirkless people, Ryu shudders at the thought. Secondly was just the practicality of it. Jack was a old university teacher who lived in Japan in the years following his retirement. After Ken gave him a call, the man happily reminded the fighter that he was the very reason he could happy retire in the first place, since years ago, Ken had saved the man and his family from a burning car. Flaming ki affinity had it's perks. He had definitely kept Ryoya's mind well above his age.
"What should we do? I don't think he's at risk to re-awaken that, but it would still be a massive issue." Ryu said thoughtfully, placing a hand on his chin.
"Well, it's his last year before high school isn't it? I say we enroll the boy in a public school and watch him closely. Do we even know what he wants to do yet?"
"No." Ryu said with a sigh. "He hasn't been 100% clear. You'd think being around a hero nerd like Izuku for as long as he has, he'd want to be one himself."
Ken scowled before turning his head towards the direction the boys left in. "I think..." He starts slowly. "We should enroll him in school first before we push him about that. Wherever he goes, he'll be miles ahead of anyone else, we both know that. What school does Izuku go to again?"
Setsuna was excited. That much was evident and try as Itsuka might, there was just no way to calm the girl down. She supposed she couldn't exactly blame her. She was just edging out of her gyaru phase, and what a phase it was, and hadn't seen her friends face to face in a few months due to conflicting schedules. Sure, they spoke over chat just about every day, but nothing beat seeing them in person. So, they both decided to dress up just a bit for this occasion.
Setsuna had opted for a nice, dark green a-line dress that was just a bit too tight around the chest area for someone her age and making green boots. She also had just a tad bit too much make up on for what was essentially a day at the mall, but she could vaguely understand the girl's reasoning.
Itsuka herself opted for a simple yellow tank top, and skinny blue jeans that her mother and Setsuna had forced her in. It apparently showed off some of her "better" features, which she still wasn't sure she agreed with, but it was much, much too late to force the issue.
With Tetsutetsu in tow, wearing a silver hoodie and pants with white shoes, (Setsuna called him the Tin-Man almost immediately), they stood around the food court and waited for their friends to arrive and thankfully, they didn't have to wait long.
"Hey, guys." They heard Izuku's voice not five minutes later.
He wore a red, white and blue All Might hoodie (big surprise), blue jeans and his trademarked red sneakers. Just slightly behind him, walking with all the energy of a sloth, was Ryoya. His hair was down out of his usual ponytail and his face looked as tired as usual, but there was a spark of interest when he noticed Tetsutetsu. He wore a simple, long sleeved black tee shirt with the sleeves rolled up just before his elbows that hugged his body in ways that Setsuna was living for, a pair a dark grey jeans and black shoes. Itsuka didn't know how, but they really needed to get Ryoya to invest in some colors. He didn't look bad, she wouldn't doubt he'd still look hot even in a plastic bag, but his usual colors of black, dark grey and grey were a bit boring. She felt the back of her neck heating up as they approached and had to nudge Setsuna to stop openly gawking.
She still didn't, but Itsuka tried.
When they got closer, she noticed something. "Hey, when did you guys get so tall?" The last time she saw them a few months ago, she and Midoriya were the same height and the crown of her head came up to Ryoya's eyes. Now? She was now up to Izuku's eyes, and just below Ryoya's chin. Had it really been that long?
"Dude!" Setsuna said, running and giving her friends a big hug. 'Fucking Christ, these two are solid. Momma likes.' She was even shorter than Itsuka was, so she barely came up to Izuku's chin and was a whole head shorter than Ryoya. But she didn't seem to mind, not one bit. "What are those guys feeding you two?!" She joked. "You got so tall so fast!" She let go of Izuku but not Ryoya causing the boy to let out a long-suffering sigh. "Why's your hair down?"
Ryoya just shrugged which looked funny with the much shorter girl still very much latched onto his person. "It takes longer than I care to admit to tie it and I'd rather not be yelled at for being late, thanks."
Izuku wanted to say that this was also because Ryoya straight up lost his hair tie, but he'd rather not be killed.
"Not even three minutes into day and you've already started the harassment." Itsuka sighed before peeling Setsuna off their friend. "New record, even for you." Setsuna crossed her arms and huffed.
"Oi!" Tetsutetsu said, making his presence known. He walked up to Ryoya, face to face and sized him up. He was just a bit shorter and slightly smaller in the muscular department, which bothered the 'Steel' quirk user more than he'd admit. "You the guy Tokage never stops talking about?" Both ignored Setsuna's nervous giggling. "She said you're pretty manly." He looked Ryoya up and down, "You don't seem so tough, pretty boy."
Ryoya looked between Izuku, then Itsuka, then Setsuna before turning his gaze to the boy before him. Izuku, having met Tetsu before, just sighed deeply, knowing the routine he was going through. Itsuka mirrored his actions while Setsuna looked genuinely annoyed at her silver-haired friend.
"This is not a mountain you want to climb." He responded coolly. "Also, really, Lizard-chan? 'Manly'? I expected something more creative than that." He said, looking at Setsuna with a dry expression.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Tetsu demanded.
"I would destroy you." Ryoya stated plainly. It wasn't a boast, nor a challenge, but a simple statement of fact like saying the sky was blue.
"Is that fuckin-"
"Is Ryo-kun already picking a fight with someone?" Momo said with a tired sigh, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. "Honestly, I should've expected that." When the group turned to her, she was wearing an expensive looking white blouse, red skirt, thin black belt and red shoes. Over her shoulder, a glossy red purse which she reached in and pulled out a hair tie. "Izuku messaged me privately saying to bring an extra one because you lost yours." Izuku whistled innocently when Ryoya turned to glare at him. She paused and looked at her friends up and down. "...when did you two get so tall?" She was always the tallest girl in their friend group and always nearing Ryoya's height, even taller than him when they were kids. Now though, she barely came up to his nose and was equaled to Izuku.
"I'm not picking a fight with anyone." Ryoya said with a huff and a small pout. "Don't make it sound like I do." He made no attempt to stop Momo when she approached him from behind and grabbed his hair. Momo made a sound that she was unconvinced.
"What about that one guy the last time we were at the mall?" Momo asked, being careful not to tug the boy's hair too hard while she tied it.
"He was being inappropriate to Lizard-chan." Ryoya defended.
"...It was one corny pick up line." Itsuka said in an exasperated tone.
"It was funny too." Setsuna laughed. "I didn't even hear him before you slammed him into a wall."
"That was one time." Ryoya's tone grew pathetic.
"And that one time at the movies?" Momo challenged.
"I didn't like how he was looking at you and Red-chan." He defended poorly.
"What about-"
"Okay!" Ryoya cut off. "I get it."
Tetsutetsu watched the scene unfold and didn't know what to make of it. The Yaoyorozu girl finished tying the bastard's hair up and he just started to... ignore him? Like, completely. Like he wasn't even there. Tetsu took umbrage with that, but before he could voice it, Setsuna gave him the intense glare of his life. 'I will kill you' she mouthed when no one was looking. Tetsu, any other day, would scoff at his friend's antics, but he knew Setsuna really wanted him and this Harushi guy to get along. That, and her glare sent a cold shiver down his spine.
After getting settled, and enjoying a nice shopping spree (in which the boys carried the bags, much to their mutual annoyance), the group decided to hit one more jewelry store at Momo's request. The boys agreed to wait elsewhere for the time being.
"It's for mother's birthday." She says. "I ordered and paid two weeks ago and now's a good time to grab it." After grabbing the very expensive necklace, there was a beat of silence before a deafening boom shook the building and entire store. "W-what's going on?!"
Several gun shots fired and screams broke out and then another explosion. Then one of the men she'd seen waiting outside for his wife ran in in a panic.
"Villain attack! Lots of them!" He shouted. He looked back to the main entrance to see people running around screaming. Smoke started to fill the store as more gun shots and explosion shook the building.
A different clerk nodded her head, turned her head and gestured at the door to their back room. "This way! There's an outside exit we can take." The girls hesitated, but a glass shattering roar made them flinch.
"B-but the guys..." Setsuna said with wide eyes, looking at the increasing chaos near the entrance. Her entire body language looked like she was about to just head in, but a hand firm hand grabbed her shoulders. It was Itsuka.
"Hey, I'm worried too, but they're strong. They're probably waiting for us near the entrance." She said soothingly, sounding nothing at all like she felt. Setsuna looked like she didn't believe her for a second, and neither did Momo, but after more loud gunfire, she groaned.
"Yeah, let's go."
"So why do you call her 'Lizard-chan'?" Tetsutetsu asked suspiciously for the third time. Honestly, things would be easier if the guy just answered, but the bastard seemed adamant on ignoring him altogether. He couldn't get it a read on this guy no matter how hard he tried. The way Tokage spoke about him made him sound like the most manly man to ever man, but seeing him in person and how aloof he generally was, Tetsu couldn't help but feel lied to. He looked between Midoriya and then gave Harushi an expectant look.
Ryoya let out a long suffering sigh. "I just do." He said for the third time. Tetsutetsu made a series of loud, intelligible sounds before Ryoya gave him a look so dry, it could've killed grass. "Why are you like this?"
"Oi!"
BOOM!
BANG! BANG! BANG!
"Get down!"
And then chaos. Something hard struck Tetsutetsu in the back of the head and the last thing he heard before losing consciousness was Midoriya yelling and the things getting hot.
Within minutes, Setsuna, Momo and Itsuka found themselves outside the rear entrance of the mall, along with dozens of others. Police and heroes were everywhere and Momo spotted at least three news helicopters and six news vans. They were immediately ushered to an open area a safe distance away where medial personnel worked as best as they could to help the injured. She spotted several notable heroes like Kamui Woods, Backdraft, and was that Wash?
"Ladies, come with me." A young police officer said with a fish head, appearing seemingly out of thin air. "We need to clear the area, All Might and Endeavor are on the way."
All Might?! Endeavor, Momo could understand. He did specialize in rescue and suppression, and she figured his agency would be a really big help dealing with all the fire.
Wait...
"The mall's burning!" Setsuna yelled before training and failing to dart back in but was easily grabbed by more first responders. "Let me go, my friends are in there!"
"Calm down, girl! We're trying to get the situation under control!" The fish officer shouted. "Just wait for All Might, he'll have those villains arrested in no time."
Waiting for All Might, Momo reasoned, might not be enough because no sooner than the man's sentence left his mouth, the building shook.
A/N: Honestly, Street Fighter knowledge isn't needed to enjoy this fic, but it helps a lot. I usually put the techniques in bold that I feel people might want to look up to get a better understanding.
Some things, I'll obviously change, like Mind's Eye, Denjin Renki and Heat Rush, but it's all for the sake of a fun story. One of Ryoya's affinities revealed, being fire. What's the other one?
Also, Ryoya backstory coming up?
Ryuujin96: Thanks. The idea of ki having elemental affinities does have similarities to Naruto's chakra system but funny enough, Street Fighter does have it's own ki elements. You can check the wiki and see. It is possible to have three affinities, so maybe Izuku will get another one? Maybe I'll finally reveal what Ryoya's second is? Who knows?
xXCaseyXx: Well, I'm sorry if you thought that Izuku was going to win every fight he gets into. It's only been three months since he started training, so obviously, he's not going to be a master at everything. He can fight back against Bakugo, and he will eventually, but Izuku's never been the character to ever just do that. Thanks for the review anyway, I guess?
