Chapter Twenty-Two
"She just dumped me and left, Keila. She wouldn't even let me explain myself." Marceline cried into her pint of icecream. After she called Keila, she spent the rest of the night at her place, with keila with doing everything she could to comfort her best friend. Right now she had given Marceline some strawberry icecream while rubbing her back.
The two sat on Keilas couch, a movie playing in the background that neither of them were paying any attention too. Marceline sulked into her icecream as she took another spoonfull into her mouth.
"She just left me there in the street, she didnt even look back at me. It seemed so easy for her, Keila. Like I meant nothing."
"Marmaid, you know I love you, but from what I know about Bonnibel, it definitely wasn't easy for her. Try to fit in her shoes?" Keila looked up at the television as the end credits rolled through the screen, leaving the room silent as they ended. "Imagine you were jealous of someone, you fought about it, then walked in on them kissing." Marceline shoveled another spoonfull into her mouth with a sigh.
"Yeah...I guess." Marceline looked down at her feet, leaving the half eaten pint of icecream on the coffee table. She pulled her legs up and hugged her knees as her friend comforted her. "I didn't believe her when she told me about Flare. I brushed it off like it was nothing. Maybe I deserve this." She rested her chin on her knees after wiping the tears from her cheeks, well, more like smudging.
"Don't say that, Marceline. You are the coolest fucking person in this god forsaken town, Bonnibel was- no, is lucky to have you. Let her cool off, give her some space. I'm sure she will come around and be willing to talk." Keila kissed Marcelines temple, helping her friend clear her tears away.
"Talking." Marceline huffed in annoyance, mostly directed at herself. "I got myself into this mess by refusing to talk. She always tried, yknow. I just- I never wanted to because I thought the whole thing was stupid." Marceline proceeded to hit her head against her bony knee, keila quickly sliding her hand over a knee for some cushion. "I'm stupid. I refused to talk and thought fucking out our feelings would make it better. It just made it worse. Now I lost the one good thing that's ever happened to me." Marceline felt a wave of salty tears escape her eyes. She hid her face behind her knees and wept, soaking her jeans with her tears. Keila playfully hit her on the shoulder, pretending to be offended.
"Hey now, what am I, chopped liver?" Keila joked, hoping to get a smile out of her friend. Thankfully it worked, kind of. Marceline looked up and met her brown eyes with her green, giving off a small, albiet genuine, smile.
"You know you're my best friend, Kei." Keila nodded in triumph, slinging her arm over her friend.
"Cmon, lets actually watch a movie this time. Things aren't over between you two, I just know it."
"Yeah...okay. I love you Keila, seriously. I couldnt do this without you." Keila smiled at her friend, giving her a big hug before they flipped through Netflix, settling on some B-rated horror movie that would be sure to get a laugh out of Marceline.
Bonnibel looked up from her textbook in annoyance as her phone vibrated rigorously against her desk. She looked at who was calling, and immediately declined the call from Finn. She rubbed her blood shot eyes, just realizing how dry they felt. It's been two weeks since Jakes party, two weeks since she broke up with Marceline. She didn't want to think about it, she couldnt sleep, and it resulted in her pulling all nighters, drowing her thoughts in her studies. She wrote down a quick little note from the passage she was reading before sighing as her phone started vibrating once more. She answered it, but not before a massive eyeroll.
"Yes, Finn? Im studying." Bonnibel said with no emotion in her voice.
"You're always studying now, Peebs. Cmon, it's movie night, let us come over." Finn cried out over the phone. He missed his friend, they all did. Since the breakup Bonnibel shut off completely, she's barely spoken to any of her friends since that day. Need to fill my thoughts with productive things, not silly things that are a waste of time. No, studying is good, studying will give me a good career.
"Sorry Finn, I don't want to." Bonnibel went to hang up the phone on Finn, but stopped when there was a loud knock on her door. She threw her phone to her bed before rushing to a mirror, attempting to fix the pink rats nest on her head. She heard another knock, this time louder, reverberating through her apartment. Bonnibel mumbled under her breath that she was coming, making sure to roll her eyes in the process. She approached the door with a heavy sigh, unlocking and opening it.
"If you were going to show up anyway, why bother calling?" She rolled her eyes at Finn and Jake, who were smiling cheekily at the pink haired woman. They pushed passed her before she got the chance to close the door on them, and collapsed onto her couch. She tried to push back that little feeling of disappointment. Who was she expecting? She definitely didnt want to see Marceline, why would she? She's totally not lying to herself.
"We wanted to at least try and give you a chance to say yes. We havent heard from you in weeks Peebs, we miss you." Finn glared at his friend, who stood there still in pajamas and a tanktop, a pink flannel drooping over her shoulder. Her hair was now tied up in a messy bun. "Bonnibel, you look tired. When was the last time you slept?"
"Uh..." Bonnibel yawned as she rubbed her eyes. They still felt dry despite her crying. "Two days ago, probably." She collapsed into the couch next to Jake, who was looking at her with much concern.
"Alright, that's enough, we're going out." Jake jumped up off the couch, grabbing Bonnibel by the wrists and yanking her up with him. "I can't stand to see you like this, Bonnibel. We are getting you a rebound." Jake was practically dragging the pink haired woman down the hall.
"I dont want a rebound, Jake. I want to study." Bonnie yanked her hands free from Jakes very strong grip. Like, really strong, when did he get so muscular? Was he working out more to impress Rain? Bonnivel quickly ahook the thoughts from her head. She was glad her friends were happy, she just couldn't stand to hear about it.
"Rebound or not, we're getting you out of this little depression cave you got going on." Jake pushed Bonnibel into her bathroom and slamming the door shut on her. "Shower, you smell. Finn and I will help clean up your place. You better come out of there smelling like blossoming flowers or so help me!" Jake yelled through the door. He smiled in victory to himself when he heard the shower start.
It only took about an hour for Bonnibel to shower and get dressed and for her two friends to tidy up her livingroom and kitchen. They opted to stay out of her bedroom, they didn't need to poke around in there. Privacy and all that, at least thats what they told themselves.
The three were now pulling up to the local bar, the Nightosphere. The same place Bonnie had first watched Marceline preform. Her band preformed every saturday night, she remembered. She suddenly felt a sinking feeling in her chest as she panicked, looking directly at Jake who was dragging her into the building.
"Jake, what day is it?"
"Jeez Bonnie, calm down. You look panicked." Jake stopped once the three approached the bar, sitting down and patting the seat next to him and Finn. "It's Saturday."
"Nope. No no. I need to leave, now." Bonnibel very quickly pivoted on her heal before bumping face first into someone. Someone that smelled all too familiar for her liking, a stench she could never forget after their first meeting. She took a step back, about to apologize to the stranger. Except it wasnt a stranger. It was Ash, of all people.
"Well if it isn't Marcelines little play toy." Ash gave the most creepy smile. "Oh wait." He let out a bellowed laugh. Bonnibel just balled her fists up, clenching until her knuckles turned white.
"Leave me alone, Ash." Bonnibel mumbled, a little scared of what the man may do to her. He just laughed again in response, turning around and walking away from the three. He looked over his shoulder, giving a half hearted wave.
"Don't forget, Marceline is mine. I will always find a way to make sure it stays that way." The corner of his lips lifted into a knowing smirk. Bonnibel tilted her head and furrowed her brows. Did he...have something to do with their break up? No, thats impossible. It was all Flare and Marcelines fault. Ash had nothing to do with it. At least, that's what she convinced herself.
She turned back around, slumping into the barstool in defeat. She wasn't about to walk home alone, not with Ash nearby.
"Uh, Bonnie, who the hell was that?" Finn asked as he ordered them all a beer. One good thing about this bar is that they never carded. Finn was the only one in their group that wasn't old enough to drink legally, so they all tended to hang out here a lot when they wanted a drink. It was especially fun when Marceline preformed and was still with her pink haired friend.
"Ash." She scoffed in disgust, taking the beer from Finns hand and taking a sip. She rested her elbow on the bar, resting her head in her hand. "The king of all douches." Bonnibel paused, taking another swig of her beer. "And Marcelines ex. I suppose he and I have that in common." She mumbled the last part, feeling a stinging sensation in her chest as it came out.
Bonnibel opened her mouth to quickly change the subject, but was too late when she heard commotion coming from the stage, followed very quickly by someone playing a keyboard and a steady guitar riff. She turned so her back was facing the stage as soon as she heard that raspy but angelic voice sing through the mic, followed by some heavy guitar. She sighed heavily before chugging the rest of her beer. She watched as Finn and Jake cheered on their dark haired friend. Bonnibel ordered another drink, swiftly chugging the bitter liquid just so she could order another one. If she was going to be forced to sit here and listen to the woman shes in love with preform, she's going to be drunk while doing it.
You've been waiting, you've been waiting just for someone
Who's a little too patient, lets you treat them like they're nothing and
I can't help it, I can't help the way you drew me
1 AM I said I loved you, you say "I'm just at the movies"
Bonnibel, now drunk, finally was able to turn around to face the stage. Her heart began to flutter at her ex, twisting and turning as she watched her sing. She'd be lying to herself if she didnt think Marceline looked absolutely stunning in the outfit she was wearing. She had really tight leather pants on with a blood read corset tied tightly around her torso. God and those legs.
No Bonnibel. You're mad at her. You don't have feelings for someone who doesnt listen to you. Nope. Not at all.
I've been trying, I've been trying my best
To justify your actions, not get so upset
But, it's been brewing, it's been stirring inside
But since you spit in my face, guess I'll let it see the light
Bonnie watched the emotion flow from Marcelines lips. She knew this song brought a lot of feelings out of Marceline, she wrote it after breaking up with Ash and was still really sore mentally from that relationship.
The pink haired woman watched as Marceline scanned the crowd, her eyes going wide in shock when she noticed Bonnibel sitting at the bar with Finn and Jake. Her eyebrows sinking in confusion, probably wondering why the fuck Bonnibel was there. Bonnie sunk in her seat, wishing she hadn't been noticed.
You break it all, got me on a wire
You fake it all, baby are you tired?
Lie to me 'til you're safe again
'Til I'm dizzy, drowsy, caving in
You break it, you fake it all
Baby, are you tired?
The music faded out as the song ended, Marceline not breaking her gaze as she stared down her ex-girlfriend. Bonnibel felt the heat rise up her neck and to her cheeks. She frowned at Marceline, deciding it would be best for her to leave now.
"I really need to get out of here." Bonnibel turned to her friends, slurring her words in the process. She was really drunk. "I'm going to go wait outside, I still need a ride home." She stumbled out of her barstool, almost falling in the process before Finn caught her arm. She waved him off with a half thank you before making her way to the door. She felt the cool air brush against her skin as she stepped outside, taking a deep breath. She dizzily paced back in forth before running into another body, stumbling backwards as she looked up at the woman towering over her.
"Hey, Bonnie." Marceline looked down at a very drunk Bonnibel. She forgot how much taller Marceline was than her. She had a concerned look on her face, a look that Bonnibel recognized on her own when she looked in the mirror. Sadness. Desperation. Loneliness. "Are you drunk?" Marceline tilted her head with her brows arched.
"Psht, No." Bonnibel took another step back, trying to distance herself from the woman. She felt her insides do backflips as she looked up, feeling almost hypnotized by those stunning green eyes.
"Yeah, you're drunk. Look, Bonnie, I really need to talk to you." Marceline stepped closer to Bonnie every time the other woman took a step back. "You've been ignoring all of my calls, please just hear me out."
"No, leave me alone. I dont want to talk to your stupid gorgeous face." Marceline couldn't help the flicker of a smile across her face. Bonnibel looked deep into her hazel eyes, feeling that redness once more across her entire face and neck. She frowned, trying to appear angrier and more intimidating. "I'm still mad at you." She slurred.
"Then why are you here?" Marceline cocked an eyebrow, genuinely wondering why Bonnibel was there on a night she knew she preformed with her band.
"That's on us." Marceline quickly turned her head, shooting daggers from her eyes as Finn and Jake left the bar, standing just a few feet ahead of them. Her face softened as she realized it was just her friends. "We uh...thought it could get you two to talk. We didn't expect Bonnie to get drunk, she never drinks." Finn scratched the back of his neck. "We miss you Marceline, Bonnie too, even if she refuses to admit it." All of them peered over to Bonnie, who was now sat on the concrete sidewalk, arms crossed and glaring at the ground. God shes so cute, Marceline thought.
"I guess another time then." Marceline sighed in defeat. "I need to get back inside, our set isn't done. Get my girlfriend home safely, yeah?" Finn and Jake both smiled at Marceline, nodding their heads.
"Promise." They waited until Marceline was out of sight to lift Bonnie off the ground, her body going limp as she giggled to herself. She mumbled something about being carried like a princess as Jake lifted her up onto his back, carrying her to the car. Jake set her down in the front seat, buckling her up in the seatbelt before closing the door and running to the other side to start the car. Finn slid into the back seat, sitting promptly in the middle seat as he poked his head up inbetween the two.
"How you feeling, P-bubs?" He pat her shoulder, giving it a little squeeze. He noticed her staring off into the distance, squinting her eyes at a familliar redhead just across the street.
"Bad. Why is she here?" Bonnibel slurred her words as she pointed at the woman across the street. "She ruined everything." Bonnibel attempted to unbuckle the seatbelt, whining to herself as she can't even fathom how seatbelts work in her drunken state.
"Uh, Bonnie, what are you doing?" Jake gently placed his hand over hers as she fiddles with the belt.
"I'm going to go have a strong word with the bitch who ruined my relationship." Bonnibel frowned as Jake prevented her from getting out of the car.
"Whoa Bonnibel, just calm down. We will drive you home, you need some rest." Jake shoved his key into the ignition, starting up the car and bringing it to life. He looked behind him at Finn, both sporting a worried look on their faces.
"No. Wait." Bonnibel flung her hand over to the driver seat so Jake couldn't drive away. "Who's she talking to?" Her eyes narrowed as she leaned forward, trying to focus her blurry vision. Her blue eyes going wide as she noticed the white mohawk tied into pigtails at the bottom. "That's- that's Ash." She spoke his name with such disgust, she might as well have spat at him. "They're arguing. What do you think about?"
"Whatever it is Bonnie, it doesnt concern us. Let's get you home, okay? We promised someone very special we would keep you safe." Finn spoke from behind them.
Bonnibel gave in, slouching back into the passenger seat with her arms crossed over her chest. "Fine." She pouted. Bonnibel may have been intoxicated, but she will figure out how they know eachother. Well, when she's sober, of course.
