Chapter 26 – Aftermath

This was an encounter that had occurred almost seven years ago.

The young Takeshi, who had finished his homework, was bored that day. The group he usually hung out with was busy with cram school, helping out their parents or had travelled outside the city in a couple of cases. With nothing on TV and no desire to play video games, he had left the house and rode his bicycle to the small river close to the city limits. Wasting no time, he had picked up several stones and had started throwing them, watching as they bounced off the surface of the river. Having grown obsessed with stone skipping a while back, he was determined to improve his technique to the point where his stones could reach the river's opposite shore.

While practicing, he had become aware of a young boy with silver hair and an aloof expression about the same age as him a few meters to the right, who was skipping stones as well. Unlike Takeshi however, his throws had been much better, reaching almost the middle of the river. For some reason, seeing his more refined form and better results had stoked Takeshi's competitive nature. With a determined expression, he had redoubled his efforts. As if having taken notice of him, the silver-haired boy had also become somewhat more motivated, his even expression having been replaced with a more intense one. Eventually, after several minutes had passed—

"Yes! My stone reached the farthest!"

Takeshi had cheered and made a V-sign once he saw his stone surpassing the silver-haired boy's one, prompting him to glare at Takeshi with an icy look.

"No, it didn't." He had countered. "Mine did another half-skip and passed yours before sinking."

"Yeah right!" Takeshi had shouted. "I know what I saw, and I saw my stone passing yours! I'm the winner!"

"In your dreams maybe." The boy had snorted. "As if you could surpass me."

"Too bad, because I just did!"

"No, you didn't."

"Yes, I did!"

"No, you didn't."

"Yes, I did!"

"No, you didn't."

"Yes, I did times a thousand!" Takeshi had shouted. "You're a really sore loser, aren't you!?"

"Look who's talking." The silver-haired boy had scowled at Takeshi. "Also, I never lose."

"You did right now! Admit it already!"

"I will admit no such lie!"

As the situation between the two of them was about to turn explosive, with the two boys looking ready to come to blows, another person had intruded on the scene.

"Stop fighting! Arguments are solved with dialogue, not fists!"

The one who had said that was another young boy close to the other two's age that was riding his bicycle towards them. However, his features were hidden behind a helmet with large bug-like eyes painted on it. He was also wearing some sort of crude armor made out of painted cardboard, while his bicycle had several armor-like attachments to it made out of plastic.

"The envoy of justice has arrived!" The boy said, dismounting from his bike and striking a pose. "Here to restore peace to the world!"

"A Kamen Rider cosplayer…?" Takeshi had said, tilting his head to the side before grinning. "Hey, not bad! Mine didn't come out half as good as yours when I tried making one."

"You like it then?" The boy had said, removing his helmet and revealing his smiling face, pale blond hair and light blue eyes. "I'm so happy! It took me a long time to make this! Hey, hey, what's your favorite series? Mine's Blade!"

"Definitely Ryuki." Takeshi had said, striking a pose. "Those who don't fight won't survive!"

"A nosy person and a rude one…but at least you both have good taste." The silver-haired boy had said with a haughty attitude. "Rare in these days. But if we're talking favorites, mine is Faiz. There's a certain grace in its brutal fights."

"You talk weird, but since you like Kamen Rider, you're alright!" The blond-haired boy had said, giving him a thumbs-up. "What are your names? I'm Leon."

"I'm Takeshi." Takeshi had introduced himself. "Ryuugamine Takeshi."

"My name is Vali." The silver-haired boy gave his name last. "While I would love a Rider discussion, we're still in the middle of an argument here."

"Yeah, but since you both insist you won, it'll go nowhere." Leon had said. "How about this then? Do it again, and I'll be your referee. That way, the result will be fair and square. How about it?"

"I'm OK with it." Takeshi had said, turning to Vali. "How about you?"

"Suits me just fine." Vali grinned. "This time, you won't be able to twist the truth to your liking."

"That's my line." Takeshi had said with evident fighting spirit, picking up another rock. "However, if you're a Rider fan, perhaps you're into Sentai as well? Or maybe Ultraman?"

"Both of them, though I picked up a show named Ryukendo a while back." Vali had said, picking up his rock again. "Very interesting for sure."

"Oh, I've watched that one before!"

"So have I!" Leon had said. "My favorite part was when—"

Like that, the three youths had started conversing while Takeshi and Vali competed. Unbeknownst to them, this random meeting would be the critical moment when the gears of the three boys' fate would start to move.

Kuoh Academy, present day…

"It can't be… Vali?"

Takeshi had a hard time wrapping his mind around the fact that not only his other old friend was standing before him after so long, but that he was also the bearer of the Longinus Divine Dividing, the renowned White Dragon Emperor.

"Ah, so you do remember me." Vali smiled. "I thought for a moment you had forgotten my face. However, I never expected all three of us to be reunited in such a manner, or that we all were unique existences in our own right. What sort of fate is this, I wonder? I can't help but feel overjoyed about it though. It's a given that the ones I chose as my sworn friends and rivals would be at least on the same level as me."

[Who cares about your joy or whatever, brat!?] Orochi snarled. [Destroy him, partner! Maybe that'll teach that maggot Albion to think himself the strongest poison user! I'm the one who will surpass him and truly become the foremost poisoner among all of Dragonkind, no, among the whole world! Me!]

[Still holding a grudge, Orochi?] Albion said, his voice echoing from Vali's wings. [However, I have no interest in this little one-sided competition of yours. If you wish to challenge me to an honest battle, I'll welcome it any time. But the Dragon I used to be and the name I bore, I've discarded these things long ago. For all intents and purposes, you now possess the most lethal poison in the world.]

[Don't mock me, Gwiber!] Orochi hissed. [You may refuse to use the God-killing poison you were born with, but that doesn't change the fact it's still the strongest among us poison users, and that I have yet to reach its level! Taking first place and then running away with it!? Screw that! There's no point fighting you if I can't experience and overcome your venom to become the best!]

[I told you before not to use that name.] Albion said in a cold tone, letting out a low growl. [Perhaps you need a reminder of what happens to those who do not heed my warnings.]

[As if a coward's words have any bearing!] Orochi laughed. [I will—]

"You will shut up." Takeshi said, dismissing Blight Current despite Orochi's outraged howls. "You've caused enough trouble for today."

At that moment, Rias and the others rushed to Takeshi and Leon's side, eyeing Vali with wary and suspicious looks.

"The White Dragon Emperor…" Rias muttered. "Why are you here? Or rather, how are you here? The barrier outside should have been preventing entry to Kuoh Town from any forces. Unless…"

"I'm not your enemy if that's what you're worried about." Vali said. "Regarding your first question, Azazel sent me and a few others here to deal with Kokabiel and his entourage, though you saw to it before we could intervene. As for your second question, we have a very skilled magician on our side. She was able to make a small hole in the barriers for a brief amount of time that was enough for me to slip through them."

"Is that so?" Takeshi asked. "How long have you been here exactly?"

"Oh, I entered the barrier at around the same time as you guys started fighting our rogues." Vali said. "Give or take a couple of minutes."

"And you just stood there and watched while we were risking our lives?" Leon asked with an incredulous expression. "We could have used some help here, you know?"

"From the looks of it, you had it covered, so I didn't see any reason to intervene, especially not against someone like Kokabiel and his lackeys." Vali said. "Plus, Takeshi wouldn't have looked kindly on me stealing his prey."

"Fair point." Takeshi said. "Though the way you're saying it, you make it sound like dealing with Kokabiel would be child's play for you, Vali."

"That's because it would." Vali said with a confident smile. "Let me say this to start; I'm fairly strong."

"You're saying this when you've already started though." Leon pointed out. "Doesn't really work here."

"Don't sweat the small details, Leon." Vali made a dismissive gesture. "Besides, start is a subjective term."

"…Is that fellow another friend of yours, Senpai?" Koneko turned to Takeshi, directing a half-lidded stare at him. "Looks like it. He's got that weirdo aura too."

"More or less." Takeshi said, turning to Vali. "Since it's case closed, why have you taken the trouble to come here, Vali? Did you want to say hi that badly? Not that I'm not glad if that's the case."

"You could say that." Vali smirked. "I was also curious to measure the strength of you two from up close. After all, apart from being old friends—we're also destined enemies fated to clash until only one of us remains standing."

The sudden surge of killing intent and aura coming from Vali caused everyone to tense, with Takeshi and Leon dropping into a stance. Everyone could feel that the silver-haired youth's power was no joke, since it could easily match Kokabiel from the looks of it.

[Yes!] Grendel shouted. [Finally, a good old-fashioned bloodbath between Dragons! I had missed that!]

[Fighting Albion again should get my blood pumping!] Nidhogg spoke with an excited attitude. [Of course, as a disembodied soul, I have no blood to speak of…]

However, just as it seemed they were heading towards a volatile situation, Vali chuckled and suppressed his aura.

"Just kidding." Vali said. "Both of you are wounded and drained right now. Defeating you like this has no meaning. No, instead, I'll be looking forward to you growing stronger, Takeshi, Leon. I'm especially curious to see if you can master the power of Cataclysm Zone or if you will fail like all your predecessors, Takeshi. You've made decent progress so far, but this is the farthest anyone's ever got. All the previous hosts were on the verge of losing their minds or having their bodies corroded at this point."

"I'm not my predecessors." Takeshi said, ignoring Grendel and Nidhogg's outraged wails in his mind. "I will surely control this Sacred Gear and change whatever crappy fate would normally be awaiting me."

"Trust me, I'll be looking forward to the day you make all its power yours." Vali smiled, turning to Leon. "What about you, Leon? You being a half-Angel was quite a pleasant surprise to be honest. I can't help but wonder…have you perhaps reached 'that' level as well? The current limit of our Longinus Gears?"

"As well…you say?" Leon grimaced. "Then you have attained it? That cursed power…the Juggernaut Drive? No, that doesn't matter right now. You say we're fated to clash, but I don't want that for us. I don't want to hurt my friend, Vali."

"Despite appearances, I'm not too keen on fighting you to the death either." Vali said. "However, there are circumstances beyond our ability to change. You and I will have to fight at some point. Our Sacred Gears and our respective positions will compel us to. That's why, you should make your peace with that and prepare yourself, Leon."

"I refuse." Leon said. "There's no force in this world that would make me want to kill my friend. If it comes to that, I'd rather take my own life first."

"Such stubborn righteousness as always…" Vali sighed. "I wonder if Ddraig feels the same as you though?"

[I will support my partner to the best of my ability, but I'm not entertaining any notions that anything will change regarding our fated clash.] Ddraig said. [Don't you believe so as well, Albion?]

[That's a given.] Albion said. [Our rivalry isn't something that can be brought to an end so easily. It's a matter of our pride as Dragons after all. However, I can feel your hostility being lower than usual, Ddraig.]

[I could say the same about you, Albion.] Ddraig said. [Is it because of our current hosts, I wonder? Leon here is unique compared to my past wielders, having taken the trouble to actually commune with me.]

[So has Vali.] Albion said. [Maybe having actual interactions with our hosts has broadened our narrow horizons a bit. Having some interests other than our fated match and enjoying ourselves isn't so bad once in a while, Ddraig.]

[I concur.] Ddraig said. [This could be beneficial in its own way.]

[Tch, have you two grown even softer than before?] Grendel snorted. [Is this really what the dreaded Two Heavenly Dragons amount to in this day and age? How pathetic, Ddraig, Albion!]

[It's better than being a stuck-up vengeful soul that refuses even the tiniest bit of change.] Albion said. [If you ask me, you're the pitiful one, Grendel. Always repeating the same patterns while denouncing growth.]

[We are confident in what we are and proud in our immutability.] Nidhogg said. [That, our obsessions and our madness is what makes us Evil Dragons, the most dreaded monsters in all the Pantheons!]

[But that's why you can never be something more, something greater.] Ddraig said. [Well, the two of us can't exactly lecture you on that though.]

"Anyway, if your business here is concluded, could you please take your leave?" Rias said to Vali. "Despite what you're saying and your friendship with Takeshi and Leon-san, I'm not feeling comfortable having both the Welsh Dragon and the Vanishing Dragon in the same area, especially when the Evil Dragon User is thrown into the mix."

"Relax, Rias Gremory." Vali said. "Once my comrade is done with his task, we'll be on our way."

"Your comrade?" Rias frowned. "What comrade?"

As if responding to her question, a person emerged from Vali's shadow, followed by a large black dog that had a blade coming out of its forehead. Said person was a young man with short black hair and pale grey eyes that looked a few years older than Vali. He was dressed in a black combat uniform with Grigori's seal on it and wore a black coat on top of it. His dog sniffed the air and surveyed the people present, letting out a low growl once it focused on Takeshi.

"Jin, behave." The young man warned his dog. "These people are not our enemies."

"Ikuse Tobio." Vali said, turning to his comrade. "It's been taken care of then?"

"Yes." The man named Tobio nodded. "Kokabiel's little contraption has been neutralized and taken apart. I've also taken the liberty to destroy the core of the barrier formation with Lavinia's anti-spell. What about you? I hope you didn't try to start any fights here. If he has, I apologize on his behalf."

"That dog…" Akeno said with narrowed eyes. "That's Canis Lykaon, one of the thirteen Longinus. That makes you…the infamous Slash Dog, one of Grigori's best agents."

"Ikuse Tobio, at your service." Tobio said, his gaze lingering on Akeno for a while before turning to his dog. "This fellow is Jin, my Independent Avatar-type Sacred Gear. Say hello, Jin."

The dog barked once before falling silent.

"Three Longinus possessors gathered in one place…" Pandora muttered. "Now there's something you don't see every day."

"Actually, there's four of us in this town since one of our comrades waiting outside is also a Longinus possessor." Tobio said. "But that's beside the point. My apologies for not assisting you in your fight, but I had to make sure Kokabiel's little trap wouldn't be sprung first, and that took me quite some time. It would be a disaster if you and higher-ups from the Three Factions perished due to his actions after all."

"At least you had a valid reason for not intervening, which is more than I can say for your comrade over there." Rias said. "We may have triumphed, but a single misstep could have led to our deaths here."

"Once again, I'm sorry for Vali's capricious attitude." Tobio said, making a small bow. "He can be a little too unruly at times. We'll make sure to give him a good lecture later on. Come on, apologize as well, Vali."

"Not happening any time soon." Vali said, spreading his wings. "Takeshi, Leon, I have a feeling our next encounter isn't far off. Make sure to be even stronger when that time comes!"

After saying that, Vali took flight, vanishing in a manner of seconds. Seeing this, Tobio sighed.

"There he goes again…" Tobio said, letting out a groan before turning to the others. "Once again, I apologize for his attitude. Since our business here is done, I'll be taking my leave as well. On behalf of Grigori, you have our gratitude for stopping Kokabiel here. I'm sure Azazel will forward a thorough report to your superiors later on about this incident."

"I expect all of us will be very busy in the coming days while dealing with the aftermath of this battle."

"Quite so." Tobio nodded at Rias. "Well then, farewell, Devils of Kuoh and Exorcists of the Church. I hope our next meeting is under less tense circumstances."

After saying so, Tobio sank into his shadow, with Jin following after him, and vanished from the area.

"So, this was the infamous White Dragon Emperor, and also the dreaded Slash Dog." Xenovia remarked. "Both are listed as incredibly dangerous individuals by the Church, and I can see why. Their presence and aura were on another level."

"Right." Irina nodded. "I couldn't help but feel goosebumps all over my body…"

"It's over for good now…right?" Genshirou said with some hesitation. "We won, didn't we?"

"Yes, we did." Rias said with a smile. "Maybe you should inform Sona yourself that everything is fine now, Saji-kun. Communications are still somewhat disrupted, and she's probably on edge from the appearance of Grigori's Longinus possessors."

"Will do, Rias-senpai!"

Genshirou said as he started running towards the entrance of Kuoh Academy. Meanwhile, both Leon and Takeshi dismissed their Sacred Gears, with Takeshi letting out a faint cry as he grabbed his chest.

"Yep, definitely going to be feeling like crap tomorrow…" Takeshi said through gritted teeth, his muscles spasming from the pain and his body feeling like it was slowly being boiled. "Totally worth it though."

"…For crying out loud, can't you go one battle without breaking your body, Senpai?" Koneko said, hugging Takeshi as she did her best to transfer as much ki as he could to him in order to accelerate his healing. "You really need to do something about that."

"It's not my fault that progressively stronger opponents keep coming to us before I can reach a level I can fight them off comfortably…I think." Takeshi said with a frown. "On second thought, it might actually be…"

"Trust me, getting into trouble is a specialty among us Dragon-type Sacred Gear wielders." Leon said, wincing as he pressed a bandage on his bleeding shoulder. "Comes with the perks of being one."

"I've yet to see any of these perks myself though…" Takeshi grumbled. "How's the shoulder?"

"Eh, I've had to deal with a lot worse than that in the past." Leon said with a shrug. "Defeating a Fallen Angel Cadre with only this much in terms of damage is honestly a miracle in itself."

"There was an almighty Angel-sama with us, so maybe a miracle was involved." Takeshi grinned. "Speaking of which, you want to tell me what was the deal with that?"

"Some other time." Leon said. "It's…kind of a complicated story, and there are more pressing matters to attend to."

While saying that, Leon glanced at Yuuto's Holy Demonic Sword, an act that didn't escape Takeshi's notice. He knew that was something that wasn't supposed to exist, and he couldn't help but wonder if what Kokabiel had shouted towards the end of their fight was actually true.

If it is, the balance between the Three Factions might be overturned big time. Takeshi thought. Unless the higher-ups know, and kept it hidden precisely because of that? Because it might have unexpected ramifications?

While Takeshi pondered that, Rias approached Yuuto, who looked uncertain and anxious.

"President, I—"

Before he could say anything else, Rias put her arms around him, pulling him into her embrace.

"You did well, Yuuto." Rias said with a smile while patting his back. "Not only did you manage to surpass Excalibur, but you also reached Balance Breaker. I'm so proud of you."

"I…these words are far more than I deserve." Yuuto said with a trembling voice. "I acted in a selfish manner and shunned everyone in the club even though you were trying to help me. Even so, you still… I can't find the words to express how sorry I am."

"But you came back safe and sound, and you found your closure." Rias said as she pulled away. "That's enough for me."

"…It's fine now, right, Yuuto-senpai?" Koneko asked. "You won't disappear on us again, yes?"

"Kiba-san is an important friend after all." Pandora said. "The club won't be the same if you aren't here."

"You can't waste the feelings of those who gave up their lives for you, Yuuto-kun." Akeno said with a small smile. "You must live for their sake as well and honor their memory. I'm sure that's what they would want."

"Sheesh, everyone's got all the good parts." Takeshi grumbled before smiling at Yuuto and giving him a thumbs-up. "That's why I'll keep it simple; welcome back, Yuuto."

"…Yes, I'm back." Yuuto nodded with tears in his eyes, wiping them with his sleeve as he smiled. "Everyone, I will promise you once again. As one of the Gremory Peerage's Knights, I'll protect you all to the best of my abilties for the rest of my life."

"Yes, that's nice." Pandora smiled. "A response fitting for a Knight. Maybe I'll be able to say the same with confidence one day…"

"Isn't that a truly heartwarming scene, Xenovia?" Irina smiled. "Even though they're Devils, they care as much for their comrades as we do."

"I have a feeling they are probably among the few exceptions." Xenovia remarked. "Still…I can't help but agree with you here, Irina. It's a pleasant scene for sure."

"Aw, look who's a big softie deep down inside after all."

"You want to say that again while Durandal rests on your neck, Irina?"

"Resorting to violence for everything is no good, Xenovia!"

While Irina and Xenovia were having a friendly bicker, Rias smiled at Yuuto as crimson aura gathered around her hand.

"Er, President…?" Yuuto said in a nervous tone. "What's…that on your hand?"

"While I'm overjoyed that you came back to us, you still need to be punished for going off on your own and making us all worry." Rias said while smiling all the while. "I think a thousand spanks will suffice."

"…Please go easy on me."

Yuuto said with a resigned expression, though a small smile appeared in his face. Takeshi assumed he was relived that everyone had accepted him back without any issues and that his punishment was relatively light.

I don't want to entertain the possibility that he's actually enjoying this…

Takeshi thought as Yuuto received his spanks. Shortly after Rias was done, the reinforcements from the Underworld arrived, with Grayfia leading them. After receiving a report from Rias and Leon, she turned to the group, a relieved smile on her face.

"You did great, everyone." Grayfia said. "Thanks to your efforts, Kokabiel's scheme was thwarted and a major crisis was averted. To the Exorcists of the Church, you have my thanks. Your aid is much appreciated."

"Think nothing of it." Leon said. "Dealing with Grigori's rogue agents was our mission from the start. We simply ended up having a much more common enemy than we first thought. With that said, we'll be taking our leave as well. Lost of reports and preparations to make. If you need us for something, we'll be in the town church for a week or so."

"It was nice fighting alongside you, Leon." Takeshi said, raising his fist. "Hope we'll get a chance to see each other at least once before you have to return to the Vatican."

"This certainly was quite the eventful reunion." Leon chuckled, bumping his fist with Takeshi's. "Take care of yourself and stay out of trouble, Takeshi. If there is time, we'll meet again."

After saying so, Leon took his leave alongside Irina and Xenovia.

"You must be exhausted." Grayfia said. "Leave the repairs and the post-processing of the battle to us and Sona-sama's Peerage. You should all get some rest."

"Rest does sound wonderful right about now…"

Takeshi said as Rias and Pandora rushed to support his trembling body.

"Yes, I think we have earned our break." Rias said. "We'll leave the rest to you, Grayfia. But if some problem comes up, don't hesitate to call me."

"Of course."

Grayfia said as the entire Gremory Peerage entered a teleportation magic circle, vanishing from the area.

A little later, in the abandoned church…

[You seem very troubled, partner. Is this about the Vanishing Dragon turning out to be your old friend?]

"That's definitely one of my concerns, Ddraig." Leon said while sitting in front of the sanctuary. "When I found out that Takeshi was the Evil Dragon User, I did offhandedly think it'd be amusing if Vali was also a special individual. One must really be careful what they wish for… I…fighting and killing my friends isn't the reason I sought power. Even if this is fate, I don't want to get caught up in it."

[I fear it will not be that simple.] Ddraig said. [Even if you do not wish for it, the current Vanishing Dragon seems resigned to that fact at the very least. Personally, I would say you should do as you wish, but it would be a waste if the one touted as the potentially strongest Red Dragon Emperor in history went down without a fight.]

"That's part of the Church's propaganda, Ddraig." Leon chuckled. "I'm not sure I'm the strongest or anything like that. I've never cared much for that either. I…just want to protect what should be protected. That's all."

[You've told me that before, Leon.] Ddraig said. [However, that's not the main reason for your turmoil, is it? You sent these two Exorcists out and had them patrol the surroundings for a reason, no? One related to what's eating you inside. I guess it's something they must not hear?]

"You know me well…" Leon said with a sigh. "I fear I've stumbled upon a horrifying secret, and if I press for answers, I'll end up being burdened with a heavy truth that can only be disclosed to a few people."

[However, you've made your resolve to bear this truth, haven't you?] Ddraig asked. [Otherwise, you wouldn't have sent those girls out. Or drawn that strange magic circle on the ground.]

"I guess I'm only delaying the inevitable at this point." Leon said as he stood up, placing his hand on the magic circle with Enochian letters inscribed on it. "Here goes nothing…"

The magic circle began spinning on the ground as sparks flew from it. After a few seconds, it stabilized, with the projection of a person appearing there. Said person was a tall Angel with long white hair, pale green eyes and glowing skin that had ten pure white wings growing from his back. He wore a simple white robe and gloves with several strange contraptions extending from them.

[Ah, if it isn't the Red Dragon Emperor.] The Angel said with an emotionless tone. [How do you do, Leon Ainsworth? It has been some time since we last spoke.]

"Yes, it sure has, Raziel-sama." Leon said. "My apologies for disturbing you."

[If you are using the direct line to Heaven, it must be something terribly important.] Raziel said. [Perhaps it has something to do with Kokabiel? Do you need the Research Department's assistance for your mission?]

"No, Kokabiel and his allies were defeated a little while ago." Leon said. "Heaven should be receiving the news right about now."

[That is great to hear, since that madman's ambition could plunge us into a new war.] Raziel said. [In that case though, why have you gone to the trouble of contacting me, I wonder?]

"During the battle, a curious phenomenon occurred." Leon said. "One of the Devils under Rias Gremory unlocked the Balance Breaker of his Sacred Gear, Sword Birth. What's quite surprising is that said Balance Breaker formed a Holy Demonic Sword, something that should be impossible due to the conflicting energies being incapable of mixing together."

Raziel said nothing, prompting Leon to continue.

"From what warriors Irina and Xenovia told me, Valper Galilei claimed this was because Deus Trinity had perished during the war, disrupting the balance between holy and demonic as a result, something that a Fallen Angel named Lailah confirmed." Leon said. "Kokabiel said something similar before his death. Of course, the two warriors dismissed that as the ramblings of madmen and liars, but it got me thinking about several other strange events."

[Such as?]

"Such as the fact that blessings and miracles seem to work at a reduced capacity compared to the old times, something a large number of priests and warriors have offhandedly mentioned several times so far." Leon said. "Moreover, the circumstances and controversy surrounding Subject Ten of the Theotokos Project that gave birth to me and the others, a project you were intimately involved in, I see all that in a new light now. Furthermore, there's also the exile of unique individuals that could potentially disrupt the believers' faith, like what almost happened to Sister Asia Argento a few months ago."

[What are you trying to say?]

"I'm saying that Kokabiel and the others weren't lying." Leon said, glaring at the Seraph. "I'm saying that the story you've cooked up about our Lord not interacting with the world because he's busy keeping an eye on the other factions is false. I'm saying that Deus Trinity is indeed dead, and that Heaven is covering it up. I'm saying…that I want to learn the truth, no matter how harsh it might be."

Raziel was silent at first, but then let out a sigh of resignation.

[…Michael and the others will have my head for this, but there is no point in games and trickery now.] Raziel said. [It is as you say, Leon Ainsworth. During the final battle of the Great War, Deus Trinity perished while confronting Lucifer and Beelzebub on the battlefield. Only the higher-ups of the Three Factions and several high-ranking members of the Church like the Grand Master, the Pope and the Ecumenical Patriarch know this.]

"It's true then…" Leon said in a low tone as he staggered back and collapsed on a chair, feeling as if someone had punched a hole in his chest and torn out his heart. "…Why? Why did you lie to everyone…?"

[There was no other choice.] Raziel said, his expression even. [If the death of Deus Trinity had leaked out, it would have spelled disaster for the Three Factions. The only reason the other Pantheons didn't attempt to capitalize on our weakened state was the supposed existence of our creator, one of the strongest Gods around. We had to maintain the illusion that he was alive in order to keep Heaven safe while we were busy rebuilding.]

"That's supposed to justify deceiving everyone?" Leon said with venom in his voice. "Sacrificing people time and time again in the name of a God that doesn't exist anymore!? I'm supposed to accept that!?"

[While I understand your feelings, we were faced with a difficult choice.] Raziel said. [In any case, that's all I can say from my side. What you do from now on is up to you, though I would request you keep this information a secret. It would be disastrous if we were forced to brand you a heretic.]

"Yeah, wouldn't want to lose the precious weapon you cultivated…" Leon spat out. "Don't worry, I'll keep your secret…for now at least."

[Thank you.] Raziel said, bowing his head. [Well then, until next time.]

Raziel's projection vanished, leaving Leon alone in the empty church. He buried his face his hands, taking deep breaths in an attempt to compose himself.

"I knew it…" Leon muttered. "I knew…and yet, it still hurts… Deus Trinity, the benevolent deity who was supposed to be watching over us…is long gone…"

[I'm surprised to be honest.] Ddraig said. [That God was skilled enough to seal me and Albion inside these Sacred Gears, not to mention all the other creatures he bound to his creations. It's hard to believe that mere Devils and Fallen Angels could kill him.]

"That's a lie! It has to be!"

An anguished shout echoed in the church, prompting Leon to stand up as Irina and Xenovia burst into the church, the former having an expression as if she had lost the ground beneath her feet, and the latter trembling and looking like she was trying to hold back both rage and sorrow at the same time.

"You two…did you hear this conversation?" Leon grimaced. "What Raziel-sama told me just now?"

"This…this has to be a lie…" Irina said, her voice shaking and tears running down her eyes. "Right…? There's no way…our Lord…could have actually… That his grace and love don't exist… That we were being lied to all this time…"

Leon remained silent, biting his lip and cursing his negligence. The girls had obviously suspected something was amiss from his attitude, and with their own lingered doubts thrown into the mix, it had led them to eavesdrop on his conversation with Raziel, leading to this dreadful result.

"Say something, leader!" Irina cried out. "Please, just say it isn't true…"

Irina's knees gave way as she collapsed on the ground while sobbing. Next to her, Xenovia seemed petrified, still struggling to control her emotions and process what she had found out.

"The Church is supposed to be all about truth…and yet they deceived us from the start…" Xenovia muttered. "How could they…!?"

Leon was unsure what to do or say here, especially since he felt just as devastated and lost as they did. He approached Irina and tried to help her up, but—

"Don't touch me!"

Slapping his hand away, Irina stood up and dashed out of the church with all the speed her unsteady legs could muster. Leon was about to go after her, but was stopped by Xenovia.

"Don't bother, leader." Xenovia said. "The way she is now, Irina won't listen to a thing you say. Compared to me, she's an even more devout believer. It's a given that she'd take the…death of Deus Trinity very hard. Plus, bewildered and shaken as you are, you'd probably make things worse if you talked to her."

"I guess you have a point…" Leon sighed. "But if something happens to her…"

"She still has her Excalibur, so she'll be safe." Xenovia said. "Give her some space for now to clear her head and settle down."

"You seem to have recovered really fast, warrior Xenovia."

"Trust me…I haven't recovered one bit." Xenovia said, turning around. "I'm just better at keeping my feelings bottled up. Right now, I also need to clear my head…and decide what to do next."

Xenovia said as she exited the church, leaving Leon alone. The way she had spoken, it sounded like she was about to make a life-changing decision. However, Leon was in no position to advise them, comfort them or do anything for them in general."

"How pathetic…"

Leon sighed as he collapsed on a nearby chair again, doing his best to regain his composure and calm down the raging whirlpool of emotions swirling within him.

Three days later…

"Anyone knows what's the big surprise President has in store for us?"

"…No clue." Koneko responded to Takeshi's question as she, Takeshi, Pandora and Yuuto were making their way to the Occult Research Club. "It sounded important though."

"Maybe it's something related to the Kokabiel incident?" Pandora speculated. "Perhaps we're being rewarded for exemplary performance or something?"

"Could be." Yuuto said. "Or maybe…it's related to Deus Trinity's possible death?"

"I still have a hard time wrapping my head around this." Takeshi said. "I mean, it makes sense considering everything we've seen and heard, but he was supposed to be one of the strongest deities around. To think that he actually fell in battle…"

"…Even the strongest have weaknesses and openings." Koneko said. "Or a bad day in general."

"True enough."

Takeshi said as he and the others entered the clubroom. Rias and Akeno were seated in their usual spots. However, there was another person in the clubroom, a familiar girl with blue hair that was wearing Kuoh Academy's student uniform and sitting in one of the sofas with an impassive look on her face.

"Hey there, everyone. We meet again."

"You're…Xenovia-san?" Takeshi said with a frown. "Why are you here? No, more importantly, why are you wearing our school's uniform?"

"Well, it's like this."

Xenovia said as she stood up, with a pair of bat-like wings extending from her back much to everyone's shock.

"You…became a Devil!?" Pandora cried out. "How!?"

"Leon Ainsworth confirmed Deus Trinity's death about three days ago." Xenovia said, he hands balled into fists. "Once I found out about the biggest lie they've been telling us so long…I couldn't bear to return back to the Church. I despise liars above all else, and I wouldn't be able to look everyone else in the eye, lie and pretend all was well."

"That's why you decided to become a Devil?"

"It seemed like the best option." Xenovia responded to Yuuto's question. "I wasn't about to become a member of Grigori, and you guys don't seem like a bad sort despite being Devils. That's why I accepted a Rook Piece from Rias Gremory and reincarnated into a Devil as a form of self-abandonment. I've also become a second-year student in Kuoh Academy and a member of the Occult Research Club. Let's get along from now on~."

Xenovia said with a smile while making a cute gesture, with Takeshi raising an eyebrow at this.

"…What are you doing?"

"Hm, I tried copying Irina, but as expected, this doesn't suit me." Xenovia said, her expression returning to its usual state. "How difficult…"

"Was this alright, President?" Takeshi asked Rias. "Even though we know next to nothing about her and she was a former enemy?"

"She did confirm Deus Trinity's death, and her intent seems genuine." Rias said. "I doubt some sort of plot is involved here. The Church wouldn't waste their precious Durandal user for that. Plus, having one of the strongest Holy Swords on our side is a big boon."

"That's true." Yuuto said. "Durandal could be very useful in future Rating Games."

"Yes, I'm a Devil now despite denouncing and hunting them down so far…" Xenovia muttered with a downcast expression. "Even though I couldn't return to the Church as things stand, was this really alright? It seems like a good thing serving under the sister of a Devil King, but still…was it alright to dismiss my whole life so far as a failure? Oh, Lord, please help this lost lamb of yours…"

Xenovia winced as a splitting headache assaulted her, prompting everyone to grimace.

"Erm, Xenovia-san…" Pandora said in a hesitant manner. "You're a Devil now, and Devils cannot pray without receiving damage."

"That's right…" Xenovia sighed, a bitter smile on her face. "I've become an impure existence, so I had best make my peace with it…"

"What about Leon and Irina-san?" Takeshi asked. "How are they after finding out about Deus Trinity's death?"

"Not good." Xenovia said with a dark expression. "Inquisitor Leon seemed very conflicted and torn about this matter. Irina…she was devasted. That girl always had a strong faith, and to learn that the pillar supporting this faith is long gone…saying that the news hit her hard is a massive understatement."

"Tell me about it…"

"Perhaps that's part of the reason the Church made contact with our Devil Kings and Azazel through the official channels." Rias said. "There are plans for an official summit where the matter of Kokabiel will be discussed among other issues. My brother said that Azazel himself intends to apologize for his oversight and bring some important information to the table."

"A summit?" Yuuto said. "That's big news, isn't it? There hasn't been an official meeting between the higher-ups of the Three Factions since…forever, I guess."

"Indeed." Rias said. "We'll have to be present as well in order to give a report regarding our battle with Kokabiel."

"Seriously?" Pandora said. "To think we'd participate in such a historic event, I can only say it seems we're destined for a life of excitement…"

"…No kidding."

Koneko nodded as Akeno spoke next.

"The details haven't been disclosed yet, but it will probably take place before summer vacation." Akeno said, turning to Takeshi. "Who knows, perhaps the Vanishing Dragon will be part of the Fallen Angel delegation. You may have the chance to talk with him again, Takeshi."

"I would like that." Takeshi said. "I'm curious about several things regarding his status as the White Dragon Emperor and his position in Grigori."

"I'll be taking my leave now." Xenovia said. "There are several things I have to know about before transferring to this school."

As Xenovia turned around to leave, Takeshi called out to her.

"Wait a minute."

"What's wrong, Evil Dragon User?"

"First, like I've told you several times already, my name's Takeshi." Takeshi said. "Second, some club members and a few students from our school will be going out to play tomorrow. You should come with us too."

"I appreciate your invitation, but I'm not sure I—"

"That wasn't a request, Xenovia-san." Takeshi said with a sly smile. "Think of it as your formal initiation to this club and the school in general. You may be busy, but I'm sure you can spare a few hours to have fun."

"No, I don't—"

"Better do what he says, Xenovia-san." Yuuto smiled. "Takeshi-kun can be really persistent. Plus, it would be nice if we could all have fun together as a group."

"…No escape." Koneko said. "As the newest member, you must follow your Senpais' orders."

"…Very well then." Xenovia said, a resigned look on her face. "I suppose it wouldn't hurt. I will be there."

"Excellent." Takeshi grinned. "I'm sure we'll have a great time."

"But in exchange, I want a rematch against the Holy Demonic Sword user over there." Xenovia said. "I'm curious to see how much stronger you are now that you have your Balance Breaker and a clearer mind."

"Any time." Yuuto said with a confident expression. "I won't lose next time."

"It will definitely be a close match." Xenovia said with a smirk, turning to Takeshi. "I'm also interested in your strength, Evil Dragon User, no, Ryuugamine Takeshi. I had my doubts at first, but after seeing firsthand how you dominated the Evil Dragons and resisted their pull, I'm starting to believe there's more to you than meets the eye."

"I never back down from a challenge, so if you want to fight, I'm game." Takeshi grinned. "Oh, and you used my name this time. Good to see you're a fast learner, Xenovia."

"Then, I will see you all later."

Xenovia said as he left the clubroom. After that, Rias spoke.

"Now then, since everyone's here, time to start our club activities!"

"Before that, may I be excused for a while?" Takeshi said. "I'm concerned about Leon after what Xenovia said, so I'd like to check up on him."

"I understand." Rias said. "Take as much time as you need, Takeshi."

"Thank you, President."

Takeshi exited the clubroom, taking out his cellphone and calling Leon. After several rings, Leon picked.

[Hello?] Leon said, his voice sounding somewhat hurried. [Is that you, Takeshi?]

"Yes, it's me." Takeshi said. "I wanted to—"

[Perfect timing.] Leon said. [Look, sorry to dump this on you all of a sudden, but I need your help. Warrior Irina has vanished and I can't find her anywhere. We're supposed to meet some agents from the Catholic Church and be on the first flight back to Rome tomorrow. If she doesn't show up, she'll be branded a deserter and be exiled from the Church. Please, could you help me out here?]

"You got it." Takeshi said. "I'll search around town and notify you if I find any trace of her."

[OK.] Leon said. [Thank you, Takeshi. I really appreciate this.]

"Hey, what are friends for?" Takeshi said. "Also, if you want to talk later, I'll be here. Xenovia came to us and told us everything about…the matter."

[So, that was her choice in the end…] Leon said in a forlorn tone. [I guess I shouldn't be surprised. At least I feel better knowing she's with you guys. But right now, warrior Irina takes precedence.]

"Right." Takeshi said. "I'm heading out now."

[Once again, thanks.]

Once Leon had hung up, Takeshi exited the old school building with hurried steps while thinking where to start looking and how.

Perhaps I should go back in and enlist Koneko or Akeno's help. Takeshi thought. They might be able to find her faster compared to me if they used Senjutsu or demonic power. Though I don't think it'll be that simple, especially if she doesn't want to be found. Irina-san grew up here, so if I just had more information about her past…

That thought stopped him in his tracks as a smile appeared on his face. Perhaps there was a simpler way.

"Let's see…" Takeshi rubbed his chin. "The track-and-field club has practice today, so they should be there as well."

After saying so, Takeshi started running towards the sports grounds, offhandedly marveling at how all the damages from the battle against Kokabiel's group had been fixed. There were no signs left of the fierce battle that had been waged here for this town's sake, and quite possibly the sake of the world.

Takeshi groaned a bit at that moment, feeling vertigo and a sense of nausea that quickly passed. His little stunt of pulling out two Sacred Gears on top of his Balance Breaker and forcing more power from Cataclysm Zone had left him bedridden for the entire day after the battle, requiring several Senjutsu treatments and two purification rituals from Akeno to get him back on his feet. Even then, he could still feel aftereffects like right now.

Best not to rely on that move too much for now…

Takeshi thought. A couple of minutes later, he arrived at the sports ground, where the girls of the club were busy practicing. Keeping his distance in order to not disturb them, Takeshi looked around, locating his quarry hidden in some bushes in the far left. Each of them held a pair of binoculars and were focused on the girls with matching perverted grins on their faces.

"So much for trying to tone down the perverted attitude…" Takeshi sighed. "Well, it's not my problem."

[You should learn something from them, partner.] Orochi said. [They know how to appreciate the female form and they're really enthusiastic about having a harem. You know, if you put your mind to it, you could have ensnared at least half the girls in this school by now. It's a damn waste of your good looks and my excellent advice.]

I'm not interested in some sort of mega harem, Orochi. Takeshi said. Would be nice if you could drill this through your eight skulls.

[But you love having sex with Rias Gremory, don't you?] Orochi chuckled. [I know you do. You could experience this every day, with every single girl over there. Aren't you the least bit curious how such a feast would feel? Eh? Eh? Aren't you?]

No. Takeshi said with some hesitation. Now shut up. This is important.

[Party pooper!]

Tuning out Orochi, Takeshi approached the three boys. They tensed up when they sensed his approach, but relaxed once they saw who it was.

"Ah, it's just you, Ryuugamine." Issei said. "What do you want?"

"If you want us to share this spot with you, piss off!" Matsuda said. "You should be satisfied with feasting on Rias-senpai, Othrys-san and Koneko-chan's bodies!"

"Kuh, just thinking about it pisses me off so much!" Motohama said, fixing his glasses. "Looks like some men got all the luck when they were born…"

"Right…" Takeshi said, unwilling to engage. "Actually, I wanted to talk to you, Hyoudou. Mind giving me a few seconds of your time?"

"Talk to me?" Issei said. "Sure thing, but make it fast. I don't want to lose the show of the girls' hips and breasts bouncing up and down!"

"Of course you don't…"

Takeshi sighed as he led Issei several meters away from the others. Once he was sure no-one was watching them, he turned to Issei, small magic circles in his eyes. Gazing upon them, Issei's expression became hollow and unfocused.

"Hypnotism successful." Takeshi said. "Alright, Hyoudou, I need your help with something here. Remember a little girl, no, a boy you used to hang out with. Chestnut hair, violet eyes, slender body I guess?"

"…A little boy?" Issei said in a monotone. "Irina?"

"…How in the nine Hells did you not figure she was a girl from the name alone?" Takeshi said with an exasperated look. "No matter. If you had a fight or when he was upset, was there any particular place she, I mean he might go? Somewhere to get away and sulk on his own?"

"…A place to get away." Issei said. "He…at times, he would run off to the abandoned observatory at the edge of town."

"Sounds like a good place to start." Takeshi said, turning to Issei. "Alright, go back to your friends now, and if they ask you anything about our conversation, say that I asked you about yesterday's lesson. Got it?"

"…Yes."

"Good. Off you go then. The hypnosis spell will be lifted once you go back."

Once Issei took his leave, Takeshi started running towards the back of the gym. After making sure no-one was watching him, he formed a teleportation magic circle, teleporting himself to the Ryuugamine residence's garage. Mounting his bike, he revved it up and exited the garage, heading towards the observatory. While he could have teleported or flown there, he was afraid Irina might sense his approach and flee if he used supernatural means. That's why he chose a more mundane form of transportation.

After driving for several minutes, he arrived at a specific area in the outskirts of Kuoh, where a flight of stairs led to an abandoned observatory. The building was in a state of utter disrepair, its walls cracked, its windows broken and a part of its dome having collapsed. Parking at the base of the stairs, Takeshi made his way to the top, taking care to keep his aura as suppressed as possible and moving as quietly as he could.

Once he arrived, he peaked inside from one of the broken windows. Sitting in the middle of the circular room was Irina, who was hugging her knees and had her face buried in them. Taking out his phone, he sent a brief message to Leon about his comrade's location and the way to get there.

"I guess Leon can handle the rest…"

Takeshi said as he turned around to leave. However, as if compelled by something, he took a look at Irina once again. This time, she had raised her head a bit, revealing her hollow expression and her eyes that were red and swollen from all the tears she had shed so far. She was the perfect image of misery and hopelessness. Her pitiful state tugged at Takeshi's heartstrings, who could not even begin to imagine how much pain she was in.

I can't bear to leave her like this…

Takeshi thought. Even if it was a little, he wanted to try and alleviate some of her sadness somehow. Taking a deep breath, he opened the door of the observatory, with Irina lifting her head at the sudden sound.

"…Who is it?"

She asked, her voice broken. Takeshi stepped into the light, allowing her to get a good look at him.

"Takeshi-kun…" Irina muttered. "Why…are you here? How did you find me…?"

"I asked your childhood friend about hiding places you used in the past, and he was kind enough to help me." Takeshi said as he walked to her. "Well, I actually hypnotized him, but I hope you'll forgive me for that considering the circumstances. Mind if I take a seat next to you?"

Irina said nothing. Takeshi chose to take her silence as a yes and sat down on the floor, making sure he wasn't too close for comfort. Both of them didn't say for a while, sitting there in silence.

[This is a good opportunity, partner.] Orochi said. [That girl is almost broken and in desperate need of support. Why don't you bring her to your girlfriend's Peerage like that other Exorcist? Offer a few kind words and some reassurances, and you can become her pillar of support in this difficult time. Doesn't that sound nice? A good deed that leaves everyone happy! Well, except for the Church, but who cares? They're the ones who brought her to this state with their lies.]

Takeshi said nothing in response to Orochi's words, gazing at the heartbroken Irina next to him. It was true that she was in dire need of support, in something to hold on to. Taking a deep breath, Takeshi spoke.

"Irina-san, I've found out about Deus Trinity's death as well." Takeshi said. "I can't even imagine how you must be feeling right now, but I have to ask this; what do you intend to do from now on? As harsh as it sounds, you can't shut yourself in here forever."

"…That's all I feel like doing now though." Irina muttered. "I know we must meet with the Church's agents to return the Excaliburs and go back…but I can't muster the will to care now. Everything…it feels like everything's fallen apart… Everything I believed in…all based on a lie…"

Irina looked at the sky above, a sorrowful expression on her face.

"I was raised to believe Deus Trinity-sama was watching over us and surrounding this world with his kindness and mercy." Irina said. "It was always my dream to serve him at whatever capacity I could. I was ecstatic when I became an Exorcist, and so proud when I was chosen to wield one of the Excaliburs. All this time, I thought…I was acting as an agent of the Lord, bringing justice to the wicked and salvation to the weak in his name…"

Tears started running down Irina's eyes once again as she spoke.

"But he was never there…" Irina said with a trembling voice. "No matter how much we pray, no matter how much we ask for his guidance, no matter how much we fight in his name…it's all for nothing. There's no salvation, no guidance, no divine justice, no love to be given, nothing. What was the point of everything I did for so long…?"

"You, are you seriously saying that?"

Takeshi said with a serious tone, prompting Irina to stare at him with a confused expression.

"…Eh?"

"Love thy neighbor, ow, as thyself, honor your father and, ow, mother, thou shall, ow, not kill, thou shall, ow, not steal…" Takeshi said while wincing from the pain before turning his furious gaze to the sky. "Hey, Heaven folk, mind cutting me some slack here!? I'm trying to make a point in your favor!"

"What are you trying to say, Takeshi-kun…?"

"Deus Trinity is long dead, and he's not coming back." Takeshi said. "That's an undeniable fact. However, what he stood for and what he taught to the world, all that is still alive and well through the various denominations that passed down these teachings over the ages. Honestly, the way of life you advocate, it's not bad at all. The world would be a kinder place if it was in line with your teachings. Sure, attaining such a world might be a dream, but it's a dream worth fighting for."

"Worth fighting for…"

Irina muttered as Takeshi kept speaking.

"I know you very little, but I can tell you're a kind and honest person, Irina-san." Takeshi said. "The Church needs people like you, who follow the path of righteousness, to always keep it going in the right direction and improving this world to the best of its abilities. I believe that's a cause worth fighting for and the best way to pay tribute to the deceased Deus Trinity for everything he's done."

"…You're kind of terrible at being a Devil, Takeshi-kun." Irina said with a small smile. "Isn't this the point where you should be trying to seduce me to your side?"

[I'll say! What the Hell are you doing, partner!?]

"If that's what you feel is best for you, by all means, you can join President's Peerage with my blessing and everyone else's." Takeshi said, ignoring Orochi. "But I don't believe it is. You love the Church and your religion too much for that. You wouldn't be so devasted otherwise. If you became a Devil, I think you'd come to deeply regret it down the line. Hell, I'm not even sure if Xenovia joining us was a good decision for her."

"Xenovia went to your side then…" Irina sighed. "That's something in line with her behavior. Never compromising when she doesn't like something and always moving forward. But I…like you said, I just can't see myself as a Devil… I'm not like her…"

"There's no need to be." Takeshi said. "You're you, and you should make the choice you feel you can live with."

"Still though…how can I face the others while keeping this truth hidden?" Irina asked. "Deceiving them feels…wrong and not in line with our beliefs…"

"Maybe so, but you know they're not ready for this truth, at least not yet." Takeshi said. "The Church will collapse if this gets out, with unforeseen consequences for everyone in the Three Factions. Harsh as it is, you must think of the greater good first in this case and persevere. Protecting the true spirit of the Church and ensuring it remains a force for good should be your priority."

Irina started laughing all of a sudden, prompting Takeshi to raise an eyebrow.

"What?" Takeshi said. "Did I sound too ridiculous?"

"No, no, I wasn't making fun of you." Irina said in haste. "It's just…the absurdity of a Devil saying something that our priests would was something I couldn't help but find funny. You'd make a good Exorcist if you weren't a Devil, Takeshi-kun. You seem to have some decent knowledge of our dogma."

"Thanks for the praise…I think." Takeshi said. "Though I'm not sure your higher-ups would be too happy for the Evil Dragon User to be serving Heaven. A little too absurd probably. As for the knowledge…I admit I tried checking up some basic things regarding Christianity. You know, know your enemy and all that. Didn't get too far before starting to get headaches even from internet articles. Deus Trinity was impeccable…"

"Yes, he was." Irina said as she stood up, looking as if the light had returned to her eyes. "Thank you, Takeshi-kun. My mind's a little clearer now. For starters, I will return to the Church. After that…we'll see how it goes from there."

"One step at a time, Irina-san." Takeshi said as he stood up as well, a grin on his face. "If you feel lost, remember, protecting the planet is an Angel's duty!"

"Sure is!" Irina smiled. "That's why, I should do my best too!"

"That's a lot better." Takeshi smiled as well. "Girls should be smiling as much as possible, especially a bright and upbeat person like you, Irina-san."

"I wasn't wrong about you, Takeshi-kun." Irina said. "You're a good person despite what you are. If more Devils were like you, perhaps the relationship between the Church and the Underworld would be much better."

"I don't know about that." Takeshi smirked. "I'm not exactly the paragon of righteousness."

"No, but then again, who is in this day and age?"

The one who had spoken was Leon, entering the ruined observatory from the front door and approaching the two of them.

"You're late." Takeshi said. "I thought you'd be here sooner."

"I was, but seeing as you were in the middle of a heart-to-heart talk, I thought it'd be rude to interrupt." Leon said, turning to Irina. "So, after hearing all, what do you wish to do, warrior Irina?"

"I'm going back." Irina said. "I'm still rattled and shocked…but I think I can handle it for now."

"Good, because we have new orders." Leon said. "The Church found out about warrior Xenovia's reincarnation into a Devil, and they promptly exiled her. Moreover, we are to leave Kuoh at once along with the Excaliburs before the Devils have the chance to work their deceitful magic on us. No offense, Takeshi, but those were our superiors' words."

"None taken." Takeshi said. "How did they find out though?"

"One of the Magisterium's members contacted her in regards to her recorded usage of Durandal." Leon said. "Warrior Xenovia was quick to state that she's now a Devil under miss Rias, which alarmed the higher-ups. That's why they're ordering us to return at once."

"I see." Irina said. "In that case, I'll be heading back to the church to pack my stuff. Are you coming, leader?"

"In a bit." Leon said. "I want to speak with Takeshi first."

"I understand." Irina said. "Goodbye and thanks again, Takeshi-kun. Maybe we can meet again under more pleasant circumstances and have that talk about Sentai."

"I'd like that, Irina-san."

Irina smiled as she exited the observatory, leaving the two boys alone.

"You have my thanks as well, Takeshi." Leon said. "Truth be told, when it came to talking to warrior Irina…I was kind of lost. If I had said the same things as you did, it wouldn't have been as convincing coming from the mouth of a fellow believer. But when a Devil of all people told her to endure and keep fighting…yeah, it had quite the impact. So, thank you for helping her. I think you even inspired me a bit."

"All in a day's work for this handsome Devil." Takeshi grinned, but then his expression became serious. "So, this is it then? Now that our alliance is over, we're back to being enemies since we're on opposing sides? Destined to kill each other at some point as Vali said?"

"I wouldn't be so sure about that." Leon said. "Kokabiel's actions have produced an unexpected result. There might be a major change coming in regards to the relationship between the Three Factions. Not only that, but I'm sure we'll see each other again soon, what with the coming summit and all that."

"In that case, I'll remain cautiously optimistic for the future then." Takeshi said. "What you said back there, I agree with it as well. I want to win against Vali and against you, but I have no intention of killing you. You're my rivals, but we'll settle this our way, destiny and ancient grudges be damned."

"I'm relieved to hear you say that." Leon grinned. "Between the two of us, we can probably keep Vali in line and prevent this fate from turning into a bloody and tragic one. No, I'm sure of it."

"You got it."

Takeshi and Leon bumped fists with matching smiles on their faces.

"I really should be off, so I'm going to have to take a rain check on us catching up." Leon said. "Take care of yourself and be careful, Takeshi."

"Same to you, Leon." Takeshi said. "Remember that I'm no longer there to bail you out when you bite more than you can chew."

"Funny, I remember that going both ways."

Leon said with a chuckle as he conjured a magic circle beneath his feet and vanished, with Takeshi following suit a few seconds after.

The next day…

"This is really difficult…"

"That's only because you're not used to it, Xenovia. Just relax and keep your arm and wrist straight as you throw."

"I know that…"

Xenovia grumbled as she placed her fingers in the holes of the bowling ball and threw it. However, her first shot ended up in the gutters, failing to knock down even a single pin, and her second only knocked down two, prompting her to let out a frustrated growl. Currently, she, Takeshi, Koneko, Pandora, Yuuto, Aika, Issei, Matsuda and Motohama had gone bowling as part of their Saturday outing. Takeshi had invited Genshirou as well, but his fellow Devil had declined with tears running down his eyes, saying that the Student President was keeping them all busy dealing with the aftermath of the Kokabiel incident.

Due to the fact that Pandora, Xenovia and Yuuto were completely inexperienced in bowling, the others, with the exception of Aika, had drawn lots to decide who would teach who. Takeshi had ended up with Xenovia, Koneko with Pandora and Yuuto with Issei, much to the latter's chagrin. Despite that, he was taking his task seriously and teaching Yuuto to the best of his abilties.

"Stupid bowling pins." Xenovia glared at the pins. "If I could whip out my Durandal, I would exterminate them in a matter of seconds."

"Yes, but that's not the point." Takeshi said as he threw his ball, knocking down six pins. "This needs persistence and technique. You have the first, and you're already showing improvement in the second."

"…Right." Koneko said, glancing at her trainee. "Unlike Pandora-senpai, who lost her patience early on and tried to use her powers on the ball. Bad Senpai."

"There must be some sort of curse applied here." Pandora said with a dissatisfied expression. "There's no other explanation for me missing all these balls so far."

"…Except for you not paying attention." Koneko said, prompting Pandora to pout. "Don't slack off, Senpai."

Meanwhile, Yuuto was showing the greatest improvement so far, even managing a strike now and then.

"This is really fun." Yuuto said with a smile. "It helps that you're a good teacher, Hyoudou-kun."

"Yeah, yeah, whatever, damn handsome." Issei said with a disinterested expression. "I wanted to show off to the new girl before Ryuugamine sinks his claws in her as well, but my rotten luck isn't helping me here…"

"Even so, I appreciate your help."

Yuuto said as he threw his ball again, knocking down eight pins. Meanwhile, after knocking down his remaining pins, Takeshi turned to Xenovia again.

"See, just like how I did it." Takeshi said, passing the ball to Xenovia. "You've almost got it. If you adjust your stance a bit, you'll manage this."

"Alright then." Xenovia said with a determined expression. "This time, for sure!"

Xenovia threw the ball with a fluid movement. This time, her aim was true knocking down nine pines at once. The last one wobbled, but just when it seemed it was a failure, it fell down as well.

"I did it!" Xenovia cheered, a triumphant expression on her face. "That's the so-called strike, no!?"

"Yep." Takeshi nodded with a smile. "See, you got it, just like I said."

"Right." Xenovia said with evident fighting spirit. "Bring on the next targets! Training is over now, and the real competition between the two of us begins!"

"Hoh, someone's becoming confident." Takeshi grinned. "I'll show you that you're still a hundred years too early to surpass your master, my apprentice!"

"It's a showdown then, Ryuugamine Takeshi!"

Like that, the group played several rounds until they were satisfied. After that, they went inside the Karaoke box, choosing a wide room and sitting down as they looked through the song selection and ordered food. Issei was the first to step on the stage, singing the opening of Dragon Ball. While he was doing so, Takeshi received a photo via message on his cellphone, accompanied by a text saying [In the middle of picking a swimsuit. I'll choose one that will make your heart flutter]. Said photo depicted the inside of a changing room, where Rias was in the process of putting on a risqué swimsuit.

"And…saved."

Takeshi muttered with a pleased smile. Feeling a glare from the side, he turned to meet Koneko's reproachful gaze.

"…Senpai is fantasizing about President in a swimsuit?"

"To be fair…yes." Takeshi said, and then smiled. "However, I'm also wondering how cute would Koneko look in one. I'm sure you'd be irresistible."

"…You'll see when the school pool opens."

Koneko said, looking mollified and somewhat pleased. Next to him, Pandora also spoke.

"I've…I've also chosen a nice swimsuit." Pandora said with some hesitation. "I hope I can get your opinion on it as well…"

"It would be my pleasure, Pandora." Takeshi said. "I'm sure you'll look amazing regardless of your swimsuit."

"I'll do my best not to disappoint…"

Pandora said with a small smile. Across her, Xenovia looked troubled.

"That's right, we were tasked to clean the pool." Xenovia said. "However, I've never worn a swimsuit before. What to do…?"

"Don't you worry, Xenovia-san." Aika threw her arm around her shoulders, a sly smirk on her face. "Aika-chan here's got your back~. We'll find you a swimsuit that fully brings out your, ehem, feminine charms."

"Kiryuu, if you're thinking anything weird, I swear…"

"Come on, don't be such a stiff, Ryuugamine." Aika said. "I'm working for you here, you know? Pandora-san's swimsuit was my recommendation, and I guarantee you'll love it."

"Hey, how about you sing a song as well, Ryuugamine?" Matsuda said, tossing the microphone at Takeshi. "Show us your skills."

[Get that thing away from him!]

Yuuto and Koneko screamed, diving for the microphone and wrenching it from Takeshi's grip.

"Woah, what's the matter with you guys?" Motohama asked. "Why the extreme reaction?"

"…Trust us, we're saving you here." Koneko said, trembling a bit. "You don't want to hear the things we've heard…"

"What Koneko-chan said." Yuuto shuddered. "I still have nightmares about that time…"

"Heh, guess we found something Ryuugamine can't do after all." Issei grinned, patting Takeshi's back. "Tough luck, Ryuugamine."

"You guys don't need to rub salt in the wound…" Takeshi grumbled as he stood up. "I'm going to use the restroom."

Takeshi stepped outside and headed for the restroom. Once he was done with his business and exited it, he found Yuuto sitting in a chair in the hallway.

"Oh, what's the matter, Yuuto?" Takeshi said. "Are they getting a little too rowdy for your tastes back there?"

"That too, but mostly, I was looking for a chance to talk to you, Takeshi-kun." Yuuto said. "I didn't get the opportunity before, so I'll say it now; thank you for everything you've done for me. Even though I acted like a thoughtless jerk, you still stuck your neck out for me and approached the Exorcists to help me even though it could have ended badly for you. That's why, thank you."

Yuuto bowed at Takeshi, prompting the latter to chuckle.

"Don't think about it too much." Takeshi said. "You're my friend, so it's a given I would do everything in my power to help you just like the others. Also, considering the way I acted in the past, I have no right to judge you or anything. What matters is that you managed to put your past to rest and take a step forward. I wonder though, what's next for Kiba Yuuto?"

"Who knows?" Yuuto said. "I never put much thought into my future, obsessed as I was with revenge. For now, I intend to become President's sword and protect everyone as a Knight of the Gremory group. Other than that…maybe I'll get to try things I never had the chance to before."

"Oh, does that mean the Prince of Kuoh is finally ready to date others?" Takeshi grinned. "A joyous day for the girls of Kuoh Academy indeed!"

"Let's not go that far yet." Yuuto said while chuckling. "Singing karaoke should be a good start."

"Then what are we waiting for?" Takeshi said. "Get in there and show everyone the skill of the Knight of the Gremory group, Yuuto!"

"Looks like I can't afford to not take this seriously."

Yuuto smiled as he and Takeshi returned to the others. Seeing that Aika was done, Yuuto picked up the microphone from her and started singing. Takeshi couldn't help but grin upon seeing the genuine smile on Yuuto's face while he sang.

"That's what I call a perfect victory…"

Takeshi muttered as he and the others continued to enjoy themselves until late at night.

In the Underworld…

"So, they sent you here as my executioner? Such an honor, Ajuka Beelzebub."

Seated on the plain metal bed of his cell, Lord Vassago said so with a sarcastic smile. The one facing him was an attractive young man seemingly in his early twenties with light blue eyes and green hair that was slicked back, who was emitting an unfathomable aura from his body. Despite his seemingly confident attitude, Lord Vassago couldn't help but be unnerved by that person's presence to a degree.

"No, no, I am not here for such a barbaric reason." Ajuka said. "If that was the case, Sirzechs or Serafall would be standing here, and I wouldn't have to deal with this chore."

"I suppose so." Lord Vassago said. "I assume you are here for my confession then? Or rather, my admission of guilt?"

"That would expedite matters." Ajuka said. "From Rias Gremory's testimony and our subsequent investigation, we found irrefutable evidence linking you and the now deceased Kokabiel. We know you were the one who leaked the info about the formulas used in our basic surveillance spells in order to allow Kokabiel to slip past Kuoh's defenses. Seriously, you have caused a lot of trouble for my department."

"If you know all that, why are you here then?" Lord Vassago. "To find out whether the rest of my family was involved in this? If so, don't waste your time. The rest of the Vassago clan knew nothing about my actions."

"That I can believe, especially when considering how much you value your clan." Ajuka said. "Of course, that doesn't mean it will escape from the repercussions of your actions. I expect that its standing and influence will plummet. But what I want to know is something else. I am certain you weren't working alone. Who else assisted you? Who are the other nobles that have betrayed the Underworld?"

"You think I know that?" Lord Vassago smirked. "We were communicating through proxies. I never knew their identities, just as they didn't know mine. I can only tell you that you and the others have several enemies in high places, Ajuka Beelzebub. Don't think we can't see what you have been trying to do over these past centuries."

"Yes, yes, very impressive." Ajuka clapped once. "I figured it would be like that, so I have taken my own measures as well. You'd be pleased to know we have already caught several rats already."

"But not the ones that matter I bet." Lord Vassago said. "Are we done here? I would like to go back languishing in this cell until the verdict is delivered."

"There is one more thing." Ajuka said. "Why have you done this? You were part of the Anti-Devil King Faction during the Civil War, which means you were opposed to the continuation of the war. Why conspire to have it restart? Or perhaps you jumped at the opportunity to eliminate a member of the Gremory family you so despise? Is it because of the old feud between Gremory and Vassago, or because Venelana-sama rejected your proposal and chose Zeoticus-sama as her partner?"

"Nothing that trite, I assure you." Lord Vassago scoffed at Ajuka. "The reason is simpler than you think. I opposed the restart of the war at the time because the Devils were in no position to win, something those immature Devil King descendants couldn't see. We would have been destroyed, or received crippling damage at the very least. But that is no longer the case."

"Oh?" Ajuka raised an eyebrow. "How so?"

"Do not take me for a fool, Ajuka Astaroth." Lord Vassago said with a serious expression. "I know of the abnormal strength you and Sirzechs Gremory possess, power that can even reach the domain of the strongest Gods. Moreover, thanks to your Evil Piece system, you provided us with combat-ready soldiers that could be used and disposed at our leisure. The circumstances were ideal for us to strike before these detestable Fallen Angels and Angels could grow stronger and balance the scales. That's why I supported that fool Kokabiel in order to end this armistice and strike now that we had the advantage. For the sake of the Underworld's future, the sacrifice of two heiresses was an acceptable loss for me. I won't deny it helped matters that one of them was Rias Gremory though."

"I see." Ajuka said. "That makes sense from a twisted viewpoint, I suppose."

"A war would be to your advantage too, Ajuka Beelzebub." Lord Vassago said. "You could gather all sorts of valuable data for your Evil Piece system when its users are faced with the harsh conditions of a real war. Isn't your search for new possibilities one of the main reasons you focused on it instead of researching another means to deal with the Devils' low birthrate and declining population?"

"Looks like the spies in my department kept you well-informed." Ajuka smirked. "True, a war could give birth to new possibilities hitherto unseen. However, I do not find it necessary for my research at this point. Not to mention, it would lead to the death of several valuable users and the data they provide. If circumstances were different…perhaps I might have joined you."

"Then, I can only curse my unlucky stars for the timing." Lord Vassago said. "Are we done now, or do you have any more pointless questions for me?"

"No, that will be enough." Ajuka said. "Thank you for your cooperation, Lord Vassago. For your sake, I do hope the Assembly doesn't rule in favor of capital punishment."

"It matters not what they decide." Lord Vassago huffed. "I lived by my conviction and desires, like a true Devil. I have no regrets."

Ajuka said nothing as he exited the cell, with the guards stationed outside saluting him. After walking for a while, Ajuka conjured a small magic circle, with a projection of Sirzechs appearing there.

[Ajuka.] Sirzechs said. [I take it Lord Vassago didn't reveal anything of importance?]

"No, but that was to be expected." Ajuka said. "He did make his discontent with the current status quo very apparent though. Really, how troublesome. There are so many projects I need to attend to, and I have to waste my time chasing traitors and plugging security leaks."

[Patience, my friend.] Sirzechs said. [If all goes well during the summit, we'll be one step closer to changing our world for the better.]

"You were always the optimistic one, Sirzechs." Ajuka said. "I, on the other hand, only see more trouble ahead even if this works to perfection. Either way, it looks like you will be even more busy than before."

[I will welcome that as long as all this work leads to a positive result.] Sirzechs said. [Regarding the security measures for the site, I will leave that to your discretion. However, before that, Azazel has sent us some interesting bits of information you might want to look over.]

"Azazel did?" Ajuka said. "Sounds intriguing. Forward them to me at the earliest opportunity."

[Will do. Grayfia will contact you later.]

With that, Sirzechs' projection vanished, prompting Ajuka to let out a small sigh.

"If Sirzechs is so determined, I suppose it wouldn't hurt for me to exert myself a bit more…"

Ajuka said as he kept walking, his mind already occupied with the next steps he should take.

This concludes Chapter 26. First, in response to your comments.

To Ryukipendragon: I'll think about your suggestion.

With this chapter, the fifth arc comes to its conclusion. The three old friends reunited briefly before Vali took off, and Tobio was introduced a little earlier compared to canon. Leon also confronted the Seraph Raziel about the bits of information he had attained so far, receiving confirmation about Deus Trinity's death, a confession that Xenovia and Irina also heard due to their own lingering doubts. Much like in canon, Xenovia reincarnated into a Devil, though she used the Rook piece this time (more fitting in my opinion like I've said before). Takeshi was also able to help Irina deal with her inner turmoil a bit, and everyone parted amicably.

Well, that's all for now. In other news, since my chemotherapy is set to start this week or the next, my update rate might slow down. I expect it to pick up again once summer is over, when I'll hopefully be done, but we'll see how it goes. As always, please, read, review, favorite, follow, but most of all, enjoy!

See you all next time!
