AN: Hello. The next chapter of the story. Made for Tumblr user princessquinnella.
Enjoy!
Basil has examined the dust found in forged jewels. As he found more, he was already having an idea of what it surprisingly was. He collected all of it into a small vial, before going through some books.
"I think I have it." he said to Dawson. "This can be found in one place only at night time. Kensington gardens."
"Kensington gardens?" Dawson wondered. "You think that's where our forger is?"
"Not quite. But we might know who he or she is."
"What makes you think that the forger is 'she'?" Dawson asked.
"You would be surprised what women can do these days." Basil said while putting his coat on. "We must get Toby and go there immediately."
"What about Elizabeth?" Dawson asked.
"What about me?" Elizabeth asked as she came in. Once she saw her uncle putting his hat on, she could figure they were going somewhere. "Got any clues?"
"In fact, I did. I need you to stay here." Basil said to her.
"But I want to come along!" Elizabeth whines.
"Oh no. You had enough for today. Plus, it's past your bedtime." Basil reminds.
"Look who's talking." Elizabeth mumbles.
"I heard that. Into the bed!" Basil ordered.
Elizabeth wanted to protest, but then she remembered she has her little investigation "spider web" on sight, and if she won't go there by herself, her uncle will see it. "Fine, I'll go. But only because I decided so."
Basil rolled his eyes because this isn't the first time she said so. "Come now, Dawson. We've not a moment to lose."
It was getting late alright, for there were no humans on sight, except night patrol. Luckily, the officer didn't see the basset hound pass by with two mice riding it. As soon as they arrived at Kensington gardens, Toby stops near the garden area where Basil Dawson get down and walked further into the garden.
"What are we looking for, Basil?" Dawson asked.
"Fairies."
"Fairies?" Dawson wondered. "You actually believe in fairies?"
"It's not about believing, Dawson." Basil said. "As Sherlock Holmes would say: "When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." And right now, the dust in the counterfeit jewels is no other than pixie dust."
"You think fairies have been stealing jewels and making counterfeits?" Dawson asked in shock.
"Of course not. Fairies are into such things. They are more into nature and such. And according to Elizabeth's books, Kensington gardens is one place to meet them."
"How are we going to talk with them?" Dawson asked. "They are obviously hiding from us."
"No, no. Only from humans. But not from us animals." Basil cleared.
Soon as they walked they noticed small lights flying around. As they came closer they could clearly see they were fairies. Soon they noticed them too and some for some reason got scared and flew away to hide. This clearly confirms Basil's suspicion: Someone was here before and might have taken something or someone.
Then one fairy accompanied by two guard fairies flies close to them. By decorative outfit and crown, this fairy is the Queen. So, Basil politely bows respectfully. Dawson is a bit unsure but does the same.
"What gives us the honor to have you as our visitor, Basil of Baker Street?" The Fairy Queen asked.
"You know my name?" Basil asked.
"We fairies of Mainland know everything that happens here, that includes the affairs of Mousedom." Queen Fairy answered. "I'm Queen Mabs, Queen of Mainland fairies, here in Kensington gardens."
"It's an honor to meet you, Your Highness." Basil said politely. "Sadly, I'm here because of this." He said and showed the vial of pixie dust.
Queen Mabs looks concerned as she takes the vial and looks at it closely. "She is alive…"
"You know who it is?" Dawson asked carefully.
"Yes. This pixie dust is only used by fairies of Pixie Hollow." Queen Mabs answered.
"Pixie Hollow?"
"Follow me. I'll explain to you in private." Queen Mabs said as she flew to the biggest hollow tree. The guard fairies lead Basil and Dawson after her. "I'm sorry for my fairies. But something happened over three weeks ago. Which is why some are still scared of anyone who comes here."
"Did someone come and kidnap this particular fairy over three weeks ago?" Basil asked as they arrived at one round table. Queen Mabs sits on the throne close to the table, while Basil and Dawson sit on other chairs.
"I don't think it was his main intention. He probably didn't even know she was from Pixie Hollow." Queen Mabs said. "For you see, Pixie Hollow is a place not from this world. The only way to get there is by the second star to the right."
"So no human knows about them." Basil figures. "I assume then they have special powers compared to your fairies."
"Yes. The Never fairies, as we call them, appear only in the Mainland when it's time to change the season. Although my fairies look after flowers and local animals, in Pixie Hollow their power is powerful compared to ours."
"But you said, they appear only when it's time for seasons to change." Dawson said. "Why was this one here?"
"Quinnella was here for a different reason." Queen Mabs explained.
"Quinnella?" Basil wondered.
"That's her name. She is a tinker fairy. They fix and build things for fairies and animals alike. From tools to houses. However, Quinnella is more than that."
"She can even make things from metal and diamonds." Basil figured.
"Yes. She is a jewelry-talent fairy. Very talented indeed for each decor or jewel she makes has meaning and becomes more than a trinket. This crown of mine for example is actually one of hers, gifted by Queen Clarion, Queen of never fairies."
"Then whoever took her, is using her to make those counterfeits." Dawson realized.
"Please, your Highness, this may sound difficult, but could you tell what happened when she was taken. With every possible detail." Basil asked.
Queen Mabs smiles at them. He is indeed a great mouse detective and he is even willing to help fairies. "It happened at night time." she started. "Quinnella was visiting on behalf of Queen Clarion and Lord Milori, ruler of winter never fairies. From what I heard these two have finally united their fairies into one, which was once impossible. Quinnella was supposed to return back to Pixie Hollow that night. But then there was screaming. A huge cat with a lilac bow had entered Kensington gardens and was chasing my fairies. We heard someone ordering the cat to get a crown, my crown. Quinnella realized this too and told me to run and I did with my guards. She hurried to hide as well, but one of my flower fairies, Lily, was stuck in a rose thorn. She went to help her out, but that cat caught her. That's all that I know."
"Did Lily see what happened then? May I speak with her?" Basil asked.
Queen Mabs asked one of the guards to bring the flower fairy. As she came to see she stood close to her queen like a child close to their parents. She is obviously scared, considering what happened then. "Lily, this is the great detective, Basil of Baker Street. He wants to know what happened to Quinnella." Queen Mabs explained to her.
"M-my dress got stuck by a rose thorn… Quinnella came to help me… but then that cat…" Lily tells in a shaky voice. Queen Mabs comforts her by holding her hand.
"What happened to Quinnella? Did it hurt her?" Basil asked gently.
"It held her down… she couldn't get free… then the rat…" A rat? "...he came down from the cat's back and came close to her. I feared he would let his cat eat her or worse… he just looked at her. Then he snapped his fingers and a bat with a peg leg threw water at her. It's like he knew we can't fly with wet wings. Then two mean mice grabbed her and they took her away…"
A peg-leg bat? No, it can't be… Basil quickly took a piece of paper with a picture on it. "Was this the rat you saw?" he asked and showed the picture. Lily nods for an answer, which confirmed Basil's greatest fear.
"Basil, what's wrong?"
"He is alive, Dawson…Ratigan is alive."
