Kyong hummed as he flipped through the papers, trying to find the one he wanted.
He had heard of Ijin driving a motorcycle from Seokju, and that had made him realize that they didn't have Ijin's driver's license on file. Which was something that he needed to do.
It would certainly be helpful if they did since he would be able to take over or be reassigned as a driver should they need to.
He walked into the locker rooms, not blinking an eye at the changing men around him," Ijin," He leaned against the doorway, catching the attention of everyone as he called out the teenager.
Ijin, who was in the middle of pulling off his shirt, paused. His shirt was bundled up on his arms, and the ones that could see it winced at the scar he had gained in the process of saving Ms. Jiyeh.
He held up the clipboard as he said," We don't have your driver's license on file. Give it to me so I can scan it."
Ijin blinked at him a few times before he tilted his head in that way of his as he asked," Driver's license?"
Why did he say it as if it was his first time hearing of it?
Seokju groaned into his locker," Don't tell me," He drawled as he turned to face Ijin, still buttoning up his shirt as he did so," You don't have a drivers license right?"
"Uh," Ijin pulled off the rest of his shirt before snatching his undershirt from the locker. The number of scars that the young man had on his upper body alone made something in Kyong's chest tighten," Not unless it's different from my I.D."
Seokju looked like he wanted to bang his head into the locker. Ijin still looked like he had no idea what they were talking about when they said driver's license.
Kyong stared at Ijin with furrowed brows as he asked," You don't have a license?"
The teenager pulled on his dress shirt as he answered," No. Am I supposed to have one?"
Everyone was staring at Ijin now. Asking themselves how the hell this actual child, the same one that was so obviously professionally trained to be a bodyguard, did not know that a driver's license was required to drive.
"Am I-"Duri cut in, looking at Ijin as if he was some type of rare creature as he said loudly for the group,"-Yes you're supposed to have one! It's illegal to drive without one! How did you not know this!?"
The way Ijin blandly shrugged his shoulders made Kyong want to throttle the young man.
Seokju sighed heavily, just causing Ijin to look at him, his fingers were still buttoning up his shirt as he said," I didn't need a license to drive in Grian." He said that as if it would explain everything.
That caught the attention of the former soldiers of the group. They exchanged looks; confusion was written all over their faces.
What the hell was Ijin doing in Grian?
The second teenager of their group was now staring at Ijin with his mouth slightly hanging open. Kyong swore that he could see the tip of Seokju's eyebrows twitching ever so slightly," It's also not illegal to kill people in Grian Ijin." That was a good point," That aside, when did you learn how to drive?
For some reason, the way Ijin had to pause and think about it, silently ticking off numbers on his fingers, did not sit comfortably with Kyong, " When I was 12 or so. "
…who the hell learns to drive when they were TWELVE?
"I was in a bad spot and needed to escape."
What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Seokju stared at Ijin with that infamous 'sick of your shit' face before slowly asking," ...What is that supposed to mean?"
Excellent question because who the hell says that they learned to drive because they were in a bad spot and needed to escape?
Ijin just passively blinked as he pulled on his jacket, repeating," I needed to escape."
"That doesn't help Ijin." Seokju's voice was bland, showing his annoyance at his friend for giving such a vague answer.
Ijin just stared at him.
Seokju stared at him back.
...
Oh, this asshole isn't going to clarify. More than one of the men was now rubbing at their faces, sighing heavily after overhearing such a conversation.
Duri was the first one to say something, Wait." They all looked at him," you grew up in Grian?"
Ijin answered without hesitation," Yes." They could tell by the tone that he was being dead serious," I was a guide there for most of my life."
They stared at him.
They were internally calling bullshit but none of them were going to call him out on it.
Because while that certainly explained some of Ijin's quirks, they were sure that he was more than a guide in Grian. a guide wouldn't have learned how to stand guard for hours on end.
If anything, guides were usually the ones that were the most skittish, always taking off on some off-the-path trail that only they knew to get to safety.
They certainly believed that he grew up in Grian, they had heard about what happened with Ijin's experience of trying tofu for the first time.
But they didn't believe him when he said that he worked as a guide. There was no way he learned everything he did from being a guide alone.
Kyong sighed, internally making a note that he was going to have to ask Ijin some more questions before saying," Ijin."
The room started to move again when Ijin turned to answer him," Yes?"
"Until you get your driver's license," God Kyong couldn't believe that he was saying this. And to a 19-year-old nonetheless," do not drive."
Thankfully, Ijin agreed without question," Yes sir."
"That includes motorcycles Ijin." Seokju added in, not even turning to look at Ijin as he pulled on his shoes.
His expression barely changed, but they had been with Ijin long enough that they could tell he wasn't exactly pleased about it,"...Ok." The pause had been just long enough for some of the older men to realize that they were going to make sure they make the driving laws known to their children when they come of age.
Seokju groaned as he stood up, clearly already feeling sore as he said," I still can't believe no one told you that you couldn't drive without a license." Yeah none of them could believe it either," Where did you even learn how to drive? "
Ijin paused as he thought back on the first time he drove something.
"001, do you even know how to drive that?!"
"We don't have time 006!"
"I think we can handle them!- Fuck! That's a fucking rpg!"
"Get the fuck on!"
"You better not crash!"
"That would be a shitty death."
"FUCKING DRIVE 001!"
"I AM!"
…
That had been a stressful moment.
That had actually been the first time he had cursed towards 006. Though to be fair, he felt like it was appropriate in that situation.
It was a damn miracle he hadn't crashed that motorcycle. Even 004 had commented that Ijin had been lucky that he hadn't needed to change the gears on the apparently standard motorcycle because they would have been -in 004's words- 'fucked beyond belief'. Which he had no doubt about that.
The more he thought about it, the more Ijin realized that he probably used up all of the luck he had been allotted for his lifetime in that single moment where he and 006 were running for their lives. When they had depended on nothing but his ability to turn the handles, the ability to hold onto the throttle, and their balance.
He kept his face passive as he blandly said," Just in some empty farmland."
Farmland that had been lit up with the flash from gunfire and explosions.
That he had barely managed to escape after he almost lost control of the bike more than once. One of those times had happened since 006 almost fell off while he was returning fire.
He could tell by everyone's expression that they didn't believe him for a single second.
That was their problem.
