Oh, he had a bad feeling about this one again.
Everyone had that grin on their faces, the same grins and smiles that they had when Jaehyung had tricked him into playing that stupid maze game.
Yeona bit into the yellow fruit, grimacing when she bit off a part of the yellow rind," It taste like a orange but sweeter," She said after she swallowed her mouthful of flesh, her hand already reaching for another one off the plate. Seokju, Hyeokjin and Jaehyung mirrored her movements, Yeongchan declining the offered fruit by saying that the fruit was too sweet for his liking.
Ijin rose an eyebrow at the way everyone was smiling as they ate the fruit.
Seokju and Yeona was eating them mindlessly, eagerly eating the fruit.
And while Jaehyung and Hyeokjin was hiding their reactions rather well, he could both hear and feel their legs moving under the table.
But they were his friends.
And it was just fruit. If he was allergic to it, he had his EpiPen in his back pack, as did Hyeokjin in case he had a reaction.
It was a fruit, it couldn't scare him like the game did all those months ago.
He hummed," If you say so," Just like last time, they smiled when he picked up a piece of lemon. Cautiously smelling it as if he was trying to check if it was still good to eat.
It smelled like the citrus bodywash the Major once let him borrow.
Without a second thought, he bit into his.
His eyes almost bulged out of his head at the sharp, sour taste that made his mouth salivate and his jaw clench.
Those motherfuckers.
They were just laughing their asses off. Yeona was hiding her smile behind her hand. Seokju had buried his face into the arm that had been resting on the table. His laughter was silent, but his shoulder betrayed his silence as they shook up and down. All while Yeongchan, Hyeokjin and Jaehyung were all cackling. The fucking traitors.
"The-the look on his face!"
Seokju sat up, his mouth open in a wide smile as he gasped out," Pay back for the park!"
Ijin grumbled.
Fine.
That was fair.
I guess.
Yeongchan was the only one nice enough to give him a bottle of water, a bottle that he took gratefully as he quietly said," This is why you're my favorite."
Cue the offended gasps for the two delinquents of their group.
"Hey!"
"Yeongchan is always your favorite!"
"Well," He shrugged his shoulder halfheartedly, a smile tugging at his lips that he hide behind his water bottle," he gave me this water bottle."
His words was just another reason for his friends to start laughing again. Hyeokjin and Jaehyung claiming favoritism. Especially since he gave since a simple reason for said favoritism.
"You know what?!" Ijin was the only one that didn't jump when Jaehyung slammed his hands onto the table, making the contents of the table rattle as he did so," You don't have your drivers license right?!" Ijin leaned away as Jaehyung leaned in, a almost manic smile on his face," I'm teaching you how to drive! Right now!"
"We still have class." Ijin blandly cut in.
He saw a vein throb on his friends forehead," You know what I mean!"
And just like that, that was how Ijin found himself at Jaehyung's house, watching as Jaehyung dramatically pulled a tarp off of a car," Alrighty," Jaehyung wiped his hands off on each other as Ijin and Hyeokjin coughed as the dust flew up into the air," She's a little bit old, but I just used her a few months ago. You know how to drive standard?"
Ijin looked at the small Volkswagen beetle. It was in rather good condition for its age. Though he wasn't sure what year it was produced in, it looked similar to one of the cars the camp had when he was a teenager. Though he certainly wasn't allowed to use it, he still remembers seeing it around.
He waited for Jaehyung to give him permission first. The camp had instilled the mentality of almost always asking for permission first (Though the Major had done a rather good job in helping break that mentality) so he waited patiently, waiting until Jaehyung motioned for him to come forward with that bright smile of his," Yes. I know how to drive," he said as he sat in the drivers seat, Jaehyung and Hyeokjin doing the same in the passenger and back seat," Though I don't know the traffic laws."
Hyeokjin frowned, his head appearing in the front as he asked," Didn't they have traffic laws where you worked?"
Ijin hummed as he pressed down on the clutch and turned the key," Don't crash. Avoid the minefield."
The car finally sputtered to life, and just like Jaehyung said, the engine was old, but he could tell based on the sound alone that maintenance was still being maintained. At the same time, he finally realized that he was being stared at.
"You know," Hyeokjin started out, looking somewhat stressed out as he leaned his cheek against the black leather of the seat," Sometimes I forget you grew up in a shithole. No offense."
"It is a shithole," Ijin agreed readily. As no denying it, it was a shithole, especially with the kinda of people that he grew up with and worked with. They were the main contributor to said shithole," What are the traffic laws?"
They explained the basic traffic laws to him, not bothering to go into the deeper parking laws and such as he was still a beginner.
"Wow," Jaehyung spoke up after Ijin had been driving for ten minutes or so," You're pretty good at standard."
Ijin made a sound of acknowledgement as he merged onto the highway, switching gears perfectly so he could go up the hill he needed to to do so," Standard is the only type of cars the camp had." He mentioned the Camp without thinking, his attention being turned towards the other cars on the highway," Automatic cars were rare."
"That makes sense," Hyeokjin commented from the back, at the same time Jaehyung asked," Camp?"
Ijin blinked, the realization of his slipup hitting him full force as he struggled to keep a straight face.
"The organization that trained me when I was a kid, that what we called it. It doesn't have a name." He tightened the grip on the steering wheel, almost relishing the way the harsh bumps dug into his palms.
Sometimes it was difficult withholding his anger and other negative emotions when he thought or talked about the Camp.
"Oh. So they took care of you?"
They did anything but that.
"They kept me alive." His voice was tense, a clear shift from his usual willingness to answer their previous questions.
Thankfully, they were not idiots and they were quick to pick up the change in his tone.
Within seconds, Hyeokjin changed the topic, and connected his phone to the aux cord so he could show Ijin a song he had talked about earlier. It was a little bit tense after such abrupt topic change, but they had long learned, and accepted Ijin's secrecy.
They had longed picked up the hidden cues of Ijin having a very hard childhood, and if Ijin didn't want to share his past, they weren't going to force him. Not only was it none of their business, it was also a Major dick move to do such a thing.
Ijin pulled back into the driveway to Jaehyung's house," Well Ijin!" Jaehyung said happily, his hand clamping on top of Ijin's shoulder," You're good at driving," Hyeokjin nodded in agreement," But first we gotta see how good you are at parallel parking!"
The teenager rose an eyebrow," Is it really that hard?" at the very basis, it was just parking no?
As it turns out.
Parallel parking really was that hard.
"Hey Ijin!" Their friend looked over his shoulder as he and Hyeokjin started to walk to the bus stop," Am I your favorite yet?"
And that little shit.
He grinned before almost happily (Or as happily as Ijin could be) saying," You didn't give me a water bottle."
"YOU FUCKER!"
