Zelda might have coerced Link into playing a scary game just before bedtime. Alternate Universe - probably out of character.

A hero is all he knows how to be. There are no rewards for being the hero; no fortune, no recognition, no love. But that is all he knows, and still he moves on. Whether running away or running forward, he moves on, never remembered.

This story occurs post-Skyward Sword, but prior to the other Zelda games. There are references to the origins of some of the characters that I was most intrigued by in the Zelda series, so far including Sheik, Dark Link, Demise, and Fierce Deity Link. Johnathan, Brandon, Michael, and Hunter thought they would never return to Hyrule after the fighting they had done in the Twilight war. Now they return to fight when a blue portal opens up and they walk in not knowing why it was here, the fighting had ended but now they will fight a new enemy.
