I have yet to read the books so this only holds what I know from the extended version of the movies and fanfics and research

Their relationship was Arda's best love story, until it ended with the Second Age. In TA 2510, they're given another chance. But lost legends don't come back to life every day & the return of one such legend causes a massive upheaval in Elrond's already disrupted life. Resuming their relationship is inevitable, but as the saying goes, the course of true love never did run smooth.
