Within a room of the Hikawa Shrine, a squat, bald, elderly man knelt before a fire. Though his eyes appeared to be closed, he merely had a natural squint. Peering into the fire, he concentrated his mind, letting natural psychic energies flow through him.
Within the fire he saw… the shrine?
More specifically, the yard in front of the house. A pair of beautiful young maidens were running back and forth across the yard, pursued by a hunched, red faced monster.
The flames flickered now revealing what bizarrely seemed to be a wrestling ring within one of the smaller shrine buildings. In the ring, one of the maidens from the prior vision, who had long, dark hair was acting like a human shield for someone, protecting them from yet another monster.
The flames morphed once again, now depicting the maiden was sitting around a table with four other girls and two cats, all of them staring exhaustively at piles of textbooks surrounding them.
With a crackle, the vision was replaced now by that same maiden, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the naked form of a rather handsome young man in a bathing room.
Finally, the flames built higher, accommodating the last vision the old man would see that night. It depicted the view of the shrine one might see from beneath the Torii. The beautiful trees and proud building standing in a condition more pristine than the elder had ever seen. Upon the step of the house he saw the dark haired maiden, accompanied by her four friends from before along with a man with shaggy brown hair and a squat, balding figure he vaguely recognized. As his eyes glanced higher up the flames he thought he saw massive towers that seemed to be made of crys-
"Grandpa?"
The old man whirled around, the vision vanishing in the shrinking flames.
"Rei? What're you doing up?"
"I went to the bathroom and saw a light on in here," she replied, stifling a yawn. "Why aren't you asleep?"
The old man chuckled. Five years old and utterly fearless. He pitied the poor man who fell for her.
"I was trying to see the future."
The little girl's jaw dropped. "You can do that!"
"Of course. Or did you think you were the only one in the family with psychic powers?"
"Will you show me?"
"Well…" It was rather late in the night. But, the old man thought, he knew Rei wouldn't let him hear the end of it if he refused. "Alright come here."
Rei padded across the floor and sat where her grandfather indicated, replicating his stance.
As the hours ticked by, the old man was impressed by how gifted his granddaughter proved to be. She didn't see much in the fire, but he didn't need to be psychic to know it wouldn't be long before she would.
She had a bright, shining future ahead of her. One, he hoped, would be a lot less bizarre than what the fire had shown him.
A/N: Originally, I was going to combine together anime and manga grandpa's anniversary story. I had it in mind to imply anime Grandpa resembled his manga counterpart but he simply shaved his head and moustache. But when I changed my mind I found myself stumped for ideas. That is, until it occurred to me that Grandpa has psychic powers like Rei, as evidenced from the episode where he became a Youma. Indeed he wouldn't be the only member of the Seven great Youma to possess supernatural powers.
So I defaulted to my standard story structure for these anniversary fics. Namely, revisit spotlight episodes for particular characters.
Hope you enjoyed it!
