A/N: I will be the first to say this, I hate the breakup arc. I love the Manga (it's my favourite version of SM, but all of them I love). That being said, I could not get this trope out of my head, and desperately just wanted to write it. So here I am writing a breakup arc, and I hope I can convey this in a way that isn't terribly contrived. Not my typical style I go for, but I did promise some angst, no? So here is an aged-up version of the breakup arc
Tears
The tears flowed freely down her face. The pain in her heart was magnified by the realization that from here on out she would be on her own. Her sobs became louder now. She was grateful her roommate wasn't home, she didn't want to be cheered up, she just wanted to wallow in her despair. Try as hard as she might she could not erase the images that appeared every time she closed her eyes. So, as she sobbed, she let her brain torment her with soft kisses that turned passionate, followed by giving all of herself to another. Yes, she gave freely and willingly with all of her heart, to a man she loved irrevocably without question. She believed deep down that he had felt the same way too. For years he claimed to love her, and promised to protect her, and yet only a few weeks after they took their relationship to the next step did he tell her that it was over. That he never really loved her, and that he was sorry for stringing her along for years, but he just realized what he felt in his heart wasn't love. He told her he cared for her, but it wasn't true love, and he owed it to both of them to end this and just remain friends. How he ever expected that they would remain friends she never knew. At 18 years of age, she was expecting a proposal from the man that had claimed to love her for centuries, but all of what she had believed for years was a lie. Was she just too young and naïve to see it before? Was it because she wasn't good enough in bed, is that what made him finally realize? All she knew is that her heart hurt, and maybe she would have begged and pleaded with him beforehand, but now she just wanted to run.
Slowly she got off her bed and wiped the tears away from her eyes, she walked over and looked around her closet for her duffle bag. Manically she filled it with any essentials she may need, a couple of pairs of clothes, some pj's, and her toiletries. She went over to her desk and opened her laptop, booked herself a one-way ticket on the next train. Afterwards, she closed her laptop and placed it in her duffle bag. She ran into Mina's room and looked through her dresser until she found the set of keys she was looking for. She ran to the kitchen and left her blonde-haired roommate a half-written apology, stating she would be out of cell range, but that she was safe and just needed some time alone. She put it on the fridge and hoped that she would make it out in time. She was sure no one knew but her, he was probably expecting her to have divulged what happened to all of her friends instantly so they could go over and yell some sense into him. No, she didn't want that, she didn't want to force someone to love her, she wanted to be sought after and fought for and loved. If he didn't feel the same way so be it, she had something else to live for now, she could pour all of her love into that, and she could do it on her own.
Usagi closed the door of her apartment behind her, forgetting to hide the positive pregnancy test that sat on the counter in the bathroom.
OOOOOOOOO
He paced his apartment, he had long since finished crying and had showered to hide the effects of his swollen eyes. He expected the frenzy of girls any minute now. It had been hours since he broke her heart, and he suspected it was about time now that they would let him have it. He would let them yell and scream at them, he deserved it, but he regretted nothing if it meant that she would live. After weeks of having the same dream of her death after they got married, he finally heard a voice last night saying that if they were wed Usagi would die. He would take pain and loneliness over her demise especially if it meant he could stop it. When she had stopped by first this morning looking at him nervously, he had been surprised to see her, and the fear he had just felt moments before in his dream led him to break up with her right there in his foyer. She looked at him shocked, but he kept talking about how he wanted her to be happy, and to be with someone who truly loved her. He watched the tears fall from her eyes, but she never said anything. Eventually, she nodded turned around and left him, and when he was sure he heard the elevator door close he let the tears come. He sobbed against his door for hours praying she would come back and tell him how wrong he was, she never came back though. Which gave him time to think and calm down, maybe he should have discussed the reasons with her, but he knew that she would brush him off and think nothing of it. As he continued to pace back and forth deep in thought about what his dreams meant, and if he had done the right thing, a loud pounding sound at his front door pulled him from his reverie. He glanced over at the clock on the wall it was 11:00 pm, and way later than he had expected, but he had expected them nonetheless. He would have let them yell outside of his door, but he didn't want to disrupt his neighbours so he figured he would let them in, they would tell him off, and then he would shove them out. With a sigh, he walked over to the front door and pulled it open. He was shocked to only see Minako clutching her purse as she pushed past him.
"What did you say to her?" she asked him in a low voice, staring at him with utter loathing in her eyes. He closed the door, brushed his hands through his hair, and prepared to tell her the lie he had trained himself through over the last few hours.
"Mina, I just told her the truth. I care about her, I do, but I am not in love with her. She needs someone who will love her the way she deserves. I have let this go on too long, I know this. It's ok if all of you will hate me, but I finally had to stop this before it went any further. She doesn't need me, and I will only step in when Tuxedo Mask is needed. Besides, I need to focus on my studies, which have long since been disturbed because of her." He was proud of himself, he said everything he had practiced, didn't falter, and he had sounded sure and to the point.
She stared back at him a pure murderous look in her eye. "Are you telling me you broke up with her?"
Odd he thought, wasn't that why she was here.
"Yes, I take it she didn't tell you everything." He realized that she was probably a crying mess, and Mina had just surmised what could have happened. That explains why it was only her here, she likely came home and heard Usagi crying and decided to seek him out. It was easier this way only having to deal with one of her friends.
"No, she didn't". she said deadpan.
"Yeah anyway, so it's for the best. Listen I have an exam in the morning, you should go and be with Usagi. I am sure she needs you right now" he said while trying to usher her towards the door. She stayed right where she was though in his foyer, and shook her head at him.
"You are a piece of work you know that? I expected more from you Mamoru Chiba rather than being a deadbeat dad." She spat at him
"What?" he looked at her not comprehending what she was telling him.
"You string her along until she puts out, you knock her up, but cannot take responsibility for it. I get that you're not ready to be a father at 21, but do you think she is ready at 18? I am not mad at you; I am absolutely disgusted with you".
"Wait, wait, wait! What are you saying?" It cannot be, she wasn't telling him that Usagi was pregnant, no that cannot be it. He didn't just break up with the person he loved with all of his heart while she was pregnant.
"Oh, I would love to comfort her right now, but she took off. Mamoru you are a deadbeat, that is what I am saying".
"Mina stop, talk to me. Are you trying to tell me Usako is pregnant?" he paused for a minute before her words sunk in. "Wait, she took off?"
Mina grabbed her purse and ripped it open and threw a stick at him. He caught it and stared at the two very clear blue lines staring back at him.
"Shit" was the only intelligible thing he could muster. He realized with a start why she was so nervous, and why she showed up at his place so early.
"Yeah, piece of shit I should say. Did she not tell you?" she crossed her arms glaring at him.
"No, I think she tried, but I broke up with her before she could." He hung his head low, the macho show he had practiced had left him, as he started crying in his hands. "We have to find her" he cried.
"No, I have to find her, you will stay far away from her. Don't think you're getting out of child support buddy". She poked him. He lifted his head and looked at her, he for once decided to talk and to share. Not talking had led him to this situation, and he had to make it right.
"Mina, I did this to protect her, you would have done the same." He finally got out. She stood arms crossed waiting for him to elaborate.
"Her safety has always been my main priority. If that means breaking up with her to keep her safe, I would. It is why I did it, of course, I love her. I love her so much that at times it feels like my heart will burst. I love her so much I am willing to break my own heart to keep her safe." He sighed.
"If she was in danger, why did you not tell us? It is also the Senshi's job to keep her safe! Do you think you run the monopoly of her safety?" she yelled at him.
"I didn't think it was something you could help with." He shrugged, but truthfully, he never thought about it. That made him wince internally. She shook her head in irritation, but let him continue.
"I have been having these dreams for weeks. It's mine and Usako's wedding day, and everything is perfect until we are about to kiss. Then she is torn away from me and the world starts to crumble. I am sure it's some type of premonition, but last night it was crueller. Last night my dream told me if I'd marry her, she would die. I figured breaking up with her would keep her safe until I could figure out what was going on, or until she was able to move on. I would deal with the pain if it meant she was safe." While he was relieved to get the words out, it brought him no solace.
"You are an absolute idiot, you know that?" Minako responded finally.
"I know" was all he could manage.
"First of all, let's say your dream was a premonition, do you not think our resident genius Ami could not have looked into this deeper? What if it's not just you marrying her, what if it's if she gets married at all? Wouldn't it be better for all of us to be aware? I mean if it was just that you couldn't marry her, just keep the status quo. Do you think she needed a wedding to prove her love for you? If you told her she would probably have said "ok let's figure this out", and not get married until we do. You know as a normal bloody person would do, but not you, no you have to bottle everything up. You know it's not just you on your own anymore right, it's all of us. We are in this together!" he was about to respond, but she cut him off.
"Second of all, what if it wasn't a premonition? What if I don't know, this new enemy that has been showing up had something to do with this? Everyone knows that you are both stronger together when fighting, than apart. Would it not make sense for an enemy to try and weaken your combined powers? Breaking up with her is not going to make her safe, it is only going to lessen her strength! Did you not think of that?" She was pointing at him now in accusation.
"No, I didn't think of any of those things. I really am an idiot. Mina, what do I do? I have to make this right. I never would have broken up with her if I had known she was pregnant. I should have talked with her, I should have talked with all of you, but I didn't and now I don't know what to do." He pulled his head back into his hands and started to cry again.
"We don't have time for tears, we need to find out where she went. Snap out of it, and help me trace her steps!"
OOOOOOOOO
Hours later after both he and Mina left multiple voicemails since Usagi's phone went straight to voicemail, they called her parents and the rest of the gang to see if she went there, but they still had no leads. They decided to head back to her apartment, and see if they could find any clues she may have left behind. It was 3 am, and even though they were both exhausted they weren't going to stop until they found her. He looked around her room, angry that he let her move in with her friend instead of asking her to move in with him like he had wanted to. Maybe if he had, she wouldn't have believed that he would break up with her so easily. He had been thinking over all of what Mina had said, and she was right. Who's to say it was a real premonition, and even if it was, all it said was not to marry her. Had he been thinking rationally, he could have seen that. The problem was when it came to Usako he never thought rationally, it was always pure emotion, something he wasn't used to. She made him feel and want things that he never imagined he ever would. He wanted the house on the hill surrounded by flowers and a picket fence. He also realized how much he wanted to have a child, and not just any child, a child that they had made together. One that would hopefully look and laugh just like her. He was worried now that he had messed everything up, he could only imagine what she was feeling right now, and it gutted him deeply.
"Mamoru!" Mina yelled from her room. He ran into her room within seconds. She was standing in front of her open dresser.
"I know where she is!" She jumped up excitedly.
"My car, now!" he yelled, and they both ran out of the apartment.
OOOOOOOOO
She tossed back and forth on the bed. The dream she was having about getting married, was turning into a nightmare. It started so beautifully with them walking down the aisle after finally tying the knot, and people cheering and popping champagne. It was everything she had ever wanted until it wasn't. She leaned up to kiss Mamo when suddenly she was torn away from him. Followed by a voice stating that if Mamoru Chiba marries Usagi Tsukino, the world would end, and tragedy would fall upon her. She sat up with a start, the tears started falling again. She looked around and remember that she was in Mina's family cottage. She must have cried herself to sleep on top of the sheets, she was still wearing her bright yellow sundress from earlier. It was supposed to make her feel cheerful, it didn't.
Where did that dream come from? She had read up about pregnancy on her phone until her battery died. She knew that she could have weird dreams, which were probably increased by getting her heart ripped to shreds earlier that day. She rubbed her still thin stomach "It will ok little one, I will never leave you". She had been scared when she found out, but then excited. She was nervous to tell Mamo. She thought he would just propose on the spot, and she wanted him to marry her for her, and not for the baby. That was what she had been worried about this morning. Now she knew he didn't love her, and she would never force him to stay for a child. She would do this without him.
She lay back on the bed and looked at the clock it was 6 am. Closing her eyes, she figured she might as well try and get some sleep. That was until she heard the front door creak open, and she clutched her brooch and sat up. The door slowly opened to the bedroom, and she was about to transform when a small voice sounded.
"Usagi?" Mina's asked into the darkened room, and within three strides Usagi had bounded into her arms.
"Oh Mina-P he doesn't love me" she cried clutching onto her dear friend.
"You know if I hadn't been so worried about you, I would be kicking your butt for what you put us through".
"Us? Do the girls know I took off? I suppose I owe you an explanation" Usagi said well still holding her friend.
"No. Although I suspect they were concerned when we called all of them looking for you, we will just say your phone died and you likely missed the bus home. Listen your boyfriend is the biggest idiot on the planet and he realizes that. He does love you, and he was trying to protect you. I will let him explain, but the fact of the matter is I explained to him that he has to communicate with you more. He is here and wants to talk to you, please give him a chance, not only for yourself but for my little niece or nephew you got brewing, okay?" She said while breaking the hug, and putting her hands on Usagi's shoulders.
"You… you know" Usagi stammered.
"Usagi, you left the test in the bathroom. It wasn't mine so it was easy to figure out whose it was."
"Oh." Oops, she thought, of course, she forgot to move it.
"Okay, I talk with Mamo-chan. Does he know?"
"Yeah well, I thought he dumped you because you were pregnant, and I planned to strangle him with my love me chain. Turns out I didn't need to strangle him, just knock some sense back into his stupid head." She winked at her and then headed towards the door to grab Mamo.
A few moments later he walked into the room flicked the light on, and closed the door. They both stared at each other for a while, until he finally broke the silence.
"Usako. I cannot begin to explain how sorry I am. I thought what I did this morning would keep you safe. I thought that you being with me would cause you harm. You have to believe me when I say I only broke up with you to protect you, I love you with my entire soul. There will never be anyone else for me, it's always been you, and it will always be you." He said while tears ran down his face. At that moment something dawned on her.
"Did you have that dream where I die after we are wed?" she asked him.
He looked at her in shock, and she knew instantly that he had.
"How did you…" he started to ask her.
"I had the same nightmare. Why would you not just talk with me about it?" she demanded.
He opened his mouth and closed it again.
"I didn't want you to talk me out of it?" he finally said.
"Do you not trust me?" she asked him. He winced when she said that and ran his fingers through his hair.
"Usa, I don't always think straight when it comes to you. My initial reaction is to protect you, I am not good at communicating. I am better with you than anyone else, but I am far from where I want to be. I have been wanting to beg you to move in with me since before you were moved out at 18. I knew Mina didn't want to be alone, so I just let you move in with her, but I wanted you to move in with me instead. I do trust you, but I think we have all established I am an idiot, who needs to communicate. I don't know if that dream is a real premonition, but we will figure it out together". He pulled her close and kissed the top of her head. She reached up and caught his face and brought him down for a kiss.
"You are an idiot, but my idiot. We will work on communicating, both of us. The stronger we are together I know we can stop anything that comes for us". She smiled up at him, and he grabbed her hands within his own.
"Usako, are you really pregnant? Are we going to be parents?" he asked her nervously.
"I couldn't sleep the other night; I just had this feeling that something had been born inside of me. I couldn't explain it, but I just knew it. I had no symptoms but I woke up super early, ran to the pharmacy and when I took the test, it came up instantly. I knew I was pregnant, and I cannot explain to you how, but I did. I know you may not be ready. I kept telling myself I could do this along, but I would love to do this with you…" She trailed off, worried about what he was thinking.
To her surprise, he picked her up and twirled her around.
"This is the most amazing news I have ever received. I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am. You have always dreamed of us getting married and having a family, well so have I". He put her down and then got down on one knee.
"Oh no you don't!" she tried to stop him; he wasn't going to propose to her out of obligation.
"Usa just listen to me! Let me communicate to you" he said with a wink, and she stopped and let him go on.
"The first day I ran into you outside the OSA-P jewelry store, my heart truly started beating for the first time. I found you beautiful and infuriating, but I could not get you off my mind. There had been a ring I saw in the store, that made me think of you. I couldn't get it out of my mind and the day when we finally got together, I rushed to the store and bought that ring. I knew four years ago, that I wanted to marry you. I have tried and failed to ask you many times, not because I didn't want to, but because my throat would get all dry, and I was worried you would say no. I cannot live without you; you are right we will solve this together. Maybe we won't be able to get married right away, but please know I am not asking you because you're having my child. I am asking you this because I love you, and I am putting all my trust in you". He then reached into his pant pocket and held out a velvet black box. He opened it and inside was a platinum ring with a pink heart surrounded by diamonds.
"Usagi Tsukino, will you marry me?"
"Yes" she squealed, and he pulled her in for a deep passionate kiss.
They soon found themselves naked under the covers showing each other just how much they loved one another when a loud pounding pulled them out of their kiss.
"Hey did you both forget that I am still here? I can hear you! Geesh I am going for a walk, and I swear you too better be done before I get back". Mina yelled huffily through the door.
She giggled and blushed, but he brought his mouth to her throat to pepper her with more kisses. She started moaning again.
"Ugh, could you not at least wait until I close the door" Mina grumbled, and she heard the front door slam.
OOOOOOOOO
Prince Demande threw his wine glass at the wall. His plan to infiltrate Tuxedo Masks and Sailor Moon's dreams with the dream poison from their last monster didn't work. They seemed closer than ever. Although he had noticed that Tux boy had been extra protective of Sailor Moon.
Maybe just maybe, if he was too distracted in trying to protect her, he would falter, and then he could capture have Sailor Moon to himself.
"Yes, she would be mine. Not like he would be able to come to the 30th century and save her."
He smiled darkly, not knowing that the light always outshines the dark.
A/N:
That was my headcanon back in the day to explain the stupid dreams when the series just randomly ended for me back in the 90's halfway through the second season. I always assumed it was the black moon clan, and didn't know until years later when I found out they finished the season that it was King Endymion. Which never made any freaking sense. He would know his past self. He would know how Mamoru would have reacted and dumped her. How did he think that was going to make them stronger? The writers for the 90's anime were really off base with Mamoru's and Usagi's relationship in general. The manga shows how truly they both love each other, and he is never a huge jerk to her as he is often in the anime.
Ok off my soap box. I finally wrote what was in my head. I assume this won't be a favourite for all, but I needed to get it out. I think he would have always been too stubborn in the anime to tell anyone about his dreams, and that's why I did the pregnancy trope. It was the one thing he wouldn't be able to run from. Well, I hope you don't hate it, but it's ok if you do. Either way, let me know. Your reviews are truly welcome (good or bad!). Oh and stayed tuned my sequel to Something Blue is out, and it's called Something New!
xoxo SB
