Chapter 1: Waking to the chill of death

I don't know when it happened, or how long I have been here, but I have been floating in this inky blackness for God knows how long. Time has become a fleeting concept when you are unable to recognize any of your basic senses. Floating around like you're in a tube of water, completely weightless, but also unable to even twitch a finger. Do I even have my fingers? I don't know... I forgot again. I think I'll sleep some more...

After what felt like a instant I feel a sense of someone touching me, but I haven't "felt" for a long time, or was it a few minutes? I don't know. How do I even open my eyes?

It's a struggle to do so, but eventually eyes are now open and taking in the sight of some small dot in the void. For being so small it still hurts my eyes for how bright it is. Eventually my eyes stop hurting and then I take in it's form and it seems to be a small dot that almost seems to beckon me ot come closer. I am able to differentiate between what is cold and what is warm now in it's prescense. Eventually I can twitch my fingers and then I slowly lift my hand up and grasp it in my fingers. After that it felt so warm and got so bright. I felt comfort and then suddenly I was sleeping again.

Waking up this time gave me a bit of pause because the ground was made of grass and I saw a bountiful forest. People were in a carriage with me and I looked at them. They couldn't see me though or hear me even when I shouted which made me feel like this was a cruel trick. I closed my eyes after what felt like 20 minutes of yelling.

"The lungs on you boy." I was started and turned around to see the world had suddenly stopped as I made eye contact with the figure. It was a portly man with a white beard that was well groomed, his age clear as his wrinkled skin seemed just a bit more wrinkly with that warm smile on his face. His eyes shone a wisdom beyond my own comprehension and he held his hand out to me. "Go ahead son... grab my hand and let's get started."

I looked at it and though I wanted to question I didn't. I reached out and grabbed it and then suddenly my racing mind went and became calm. My body warmed up some more and I looked back at him when I felt him give me a slight tug, like a father trying to gently coax his child to follow. Turning back after the first step showed me that my body was being left behind and he still gave me a warm smile to keep me calm. For some reason it was working even though I knew I should be freaking out for what is going on... it was like I physically couldn't do so. "I... what is... what is happening?"

He looked back at me and then put his finger to his mouth and then "Shh" me. I complied and then he found a clearing in the woods where a stump was set down. He walked over and then sat me down on the stump and then patted my head like I was a child. I felt a bit demoralized, I mean I'm 26... I think. The number feels right and while I was thinking that he laughed a bit. "You may be that old, but ol'Hatchet has been around for about 5200 years." With that reveal my eyes widen slightly and he then takes a seat, and while going to sit the earth makes a chair for him. Understandably I startled a bit and he just raised his hand in a disarming gesture.

"Now you may have a lot of questions, but let me start off with something real quick. You my friend have died, but it was a long, long time ago when you did. See you passed away in your sleep around 12,000 years ago, but you were a bit of a unique case. Currently I am keeping your mind calm and in check so we can keep any pesky freakouts in check. This is a discussion about what to do to you after all." Hearing him say that I died almost 12,000 years ago... I should freakout, but since I am not then I guess he is telling the truth about the 'keeping my mind calm' thing.

I put my arm to the back of my head and scratch it and am suddenly elated with being able to do that again. I felt so relieved and then looked back at Hatchet. "Are you God, Hatchet? You look like you would be."

Hatchet raised an eyebrow and then gave a warmer laugh that made me feel like I was sitting with my grandpa again when I came home from school. Where did I go to school aga- "Well to answer your question, son. No I am not God. To some I would be, to others I would be the Devil, a spirit, or an old friend. To you? Well I am potentially an equal after this conversation." I gave him a confused look and then he continued.

"You see you are what is called a 'Lost Soul', something that regrettably happens more often than you think. It is when a person dies before their time in some convoluted way and then they end up lost to all the afterlifes out there. Yes all of the afterlifes exist by the way, been to Odin's hall more than I can count and even have gone to Shangri-La as well. It is a bit difficult to pick up on, but let's get down to business right quick. So what is going on right now is you have been picked by me to recieve a 'blessing'." I can hear the quotes around that word. "This is a new start in a way. Right now your mind is so far gone, and all over the place, that I wouldn't know the first place to send you, or if I should call the Reaper to sort it out, so I am giving you the choice.

This place right here is called the Skyrim." That word gives me some slight remembrance of my past and even Hatchet picks up on it. It is slow, but I start to realize where I am. "I see that I managed to jog something, right?" I nod and he gives me the same smile as before. "That's good, kid. Now what is going to happen is I am gonna give you a choice to either live here in this world as a 'Gamer'. Before you ask a question about what that is I am gonna skip that and do this." He then places a finger in the center of my forehead and then I get a large influx of knowledge about what a Gamer is and the potential they possess, or lack there of since the Gamers can reach heights of being able to be the progenitor of their own multiverses and become the creator of even Gods. I look at him with awe as I realize what he is and what he can do and then he laughs a bit and says. "Never gets old seeing faces like that."

I finally asked him after his long tangent. "Wait so... I am being given this 'Gamer' thing? Why?"

His face softens and begins to look remorseful. "Well it is because it is either you can do that, or I can eat your soul and travel around till an afterlife picks it up. See since your mind is so jumbled, and your soul is tainted right now, there's no way for me to even beging to figure out where your soul would go; and if I were to throw you back right now then you will just end up getting sucked back into the void, kid. So you really only have the two options. Become a Gamer and stand as an equal with me and others one day, or trust in me that we find a afterlife that'll take you within a few dozen years before your soul becomes a part of me and you end up ceasing to exist. Second one is a risk that I don't wanna take, but there is a chance it could payoff. It's small, but it is there and unfortunately there is no guarantee that you'll see your family and friends again in the afterlife that picks you." He places a hand on my shoulder as he was talking and then let me think about all that was said. "Take your time right now to choose. I paused this universe and am allowing you time to think. I'm eternal so I won't have to worry about time." He goes to stand up and then as he does I reach out and grab his hand. He looks back to me and then sees a small glimmer of hope.

"Hatchet, if I were to become a Gamer can I even find anyone from my old life one day? Will my mind ever heal? Will my soul be relieved of the taint on it? If you eat my soul will it hurt? I need to know these things." I was shaking slightly as I spoke, but kept my eyes on his and he decided to sit back down. He put his hand on mine and then gave a apologetic smile.

"Truthfully kid? I don't know. It is possible to do so and I believe you can, but it is gonna be a hard road to go on. As for the soul eating, well, I heard it is excruciatingly painful, so if you are a secret masochist it may be in your alleyway." Hatchet then looked over to the left and then sighed as he nodded his head. "Well to tell you something about your specific system that you would get, her name is Magna and she is honestly hoping you say yes right now. If I can help your choice a bit more... I would say being a Gamer is the best choice you can make out of your only two options."

After hearing all that I start to think a bit on it all. I look over to Hatchet and then begin to look around the area a bit as well. It is a beautiful place and I feel like I could enjoy my time here with a second chance. This system also wants me to say yes and the name of her is Magna? I guess that is nice and he is speaking as if Magna is a living being so... maybe I won't be alone in here either. I try to organize or get a bit of my memory to come to the forefront and it takes great effort, but I get basic amounts. I was a soldier at one point in my life and after serving the military I went and became a park ranger at one point. I think my coworkers would have been the first to find my body then... sorry guys. Getting a bit of memory from Skyrim I should be able to survive here for awhile, and who knows what the system will do to help me survive as well. After a bit I look back up at Hatchet and then nod to him. "Alright Hatchet, I'll be a Gamer. What do I have to do?"

With a large smile on his face he then reaches a hand out and goes to grab something and then he pulls back this orb from nowhere. My eyes were drawn to it as it seemed to give off this aura of blue and purple flames with a kaleidescope-like center that seemed to shift through all the colors of the rainbow. "All you gotta do is hold still for me kid." With that he then thrusted a fist deep into my chest where the orb went with it. My body erupted into a bright glow and I felt as if I was on top of the world as I looked at my hands. I felt my body grow slightly and then it expanded and compressed back to normal. I looked back up to Hatchet to see him smiling and suddenly I heard a new voice. It was female and so enchanting that I felt as if I was in the comfort of a Mother talking to her child.
