The Invisible Scar
Nightmares
He had never seen his father openly worried before. The spiders that scared Harry didn't worry the man, who would easily sweep them away. Something was wrong because his Dad looked very worried. He didn't understand what his parents were talking about, but whatever it was, it scared his mom. Before he could ask something, his father's hands came gently on his shoulders.
"Protect your sister Harry," his Dad said. He wanted to ask why but settled on a nod. Of course, he would protect his sister.
Suddenly he was being yanked by his Mom on the stairs. Rose was protesting loudly but her cries of Mama and Dada were ignored. They quickly entered Rose's room and his Mom closed the door. His heartbeat was wild. Why did we leave dad? What had attacked their house? Thousands of questions surfaced in his mind.
His mom looked frantic. She was never the one to make a mess, and yet here she was frantically looking for something in the cupboard, throwing things around like Rose. He wanted to hear what was happening outside the room but knew that the doors were soundproofed by magic. He always wondered why the house was peaceful heaven when Rose was in a room.
His mom suddenly grabbed both him and Rose. He got a look at her face and was shocked: she was crying! What made her mom cry? Before he could ask that, his mom said an incomprehensible word and screamed.
"MOM!" he screamed as he jolted upright. His heartbeat was wild and breathing laborious. He flinched away when he felt someone's hand on his forehead. It took him several moments to understand that they weren't at Godric Hollow, that the sounds of spellfire and explosions weren't rocking the building. He fumbled for his glasses on the nightstand and put them on.
"Harry," his mother said gently. He looked up to see his mom and sister looking at him with concern. Shit, He had ruined the sleep of not only mom but Rose as well. He shook his head, trying to clear the haziness clouding his mind.
His Mother sat carefully on the edge of his bed and gently hugged him. He didn't flinch away this time and relaxed as his mother combed through his hair.
"Nightmare again, sweetie?" Lily asked. Harry simply hummed in affirmation, too tired to say much.
Lily sat back and looked at her 7-year-old son with concern in her eyes. He was an excessively quiet child, even more so after James' death. She didn't know how much he remembered, but it was enough to give him nightmares. When he was small, she had used the sleeping potion to make him sleep thinking that his nightmares would fade. But they never did, and she didn't want to overdose him with a sleeping potion because they stopped being effective after some time.
Both Harry and Rose were the most brilliant children she could've asked for. Both had a hunger for knowledge, but where Rose, like her, loved all aspects of magic, be it theoretical or practical, Harry was more like James, he only liked the practical aspects of magic.
When he was 6, she had once found him trying to silence his room with her wand to avoid waking them from sleep due to his nightmares. He had even been surprisingly successful, no matter that the spell would've shattered from his scream anyway. But she had caught him and, of course, sternly told him to never do something like that and refused to give her wand for his practice afterward.
Rose on the other hand, 'the girl who lived' as the stupid wizards called her now, was a very bubbly child. She was like a younger version of herself, with green eyes and red hair she looked adorable. No one could meet her and not love her.
Rose had a thin crescent-shaped scar on her forehead. Lily couldn't understand why Dumbledore had advised against going to St. Mungo's to heal the scar. After getting fed up with him, she herself had cast Episkey. Her scar was now barely visible compared to before her spell, only flecks of lingering black remaining. Of course, magic was not all-powerful, it couldn't remove all traces of a magical scar. She had not been sure if a simple healing spell would even work, considering it was a cursed scar. But was nonetheless happy with the results. Dumbledore had looked oddly surprised and had left the house, stating he had to do some research.
The scar was nothing more than a scratch but the wizarding world had proclaimed it a symbol of victory. It sickened her to think about what Rose would have to go through just because of that scar.
It was one of the reasons she had bought a small house in Ottery St. Catchpole. She had kept the location of the house secret so nobody could attack them again.
Despite being unnecessary, she had decided to send her children to Muggle School. She didn't want them to be ignorant of the muggle world.
Lily was broken after James had been killed. She put on a facade of normality for the sake of Harry and Rose, but when they had fallen asleep, she'd lock herself in a room and cry, allowing the tears of anguish and despair to come free. She had felt hollow for more than a year after James' passing, but she was dealing better now.
Shockingly Sirius was the one who had helped her out the most. So engrossed she was in her wallowing that she hadn't even known when Sirius has been locked up in Azkaban. Poor Sirius had to live in Azkaban for a week before a tired Remus had come to check on her and told her about it. She was enraged and stormed to Dumbledore, demanding answers. Sirius was cleared from all charges in record time.
He had since then started to take care of both Rose and Harry for her when she was tired. The new Sirius was infinitely better than the old one.
Remus was a frequent guest in the house too but the guilt of not believing Sirius was eating away at him. Sirius had dismissed the matter many times but Remus still was not as comfortable as he was in the past.
Peter…even the thought of his name caused a fire to spread through her veins. If there was a person Lily and Sirius could murder in cold blood, it was him.
Harry's nightmares started had started after that Halloween night. The nightmares had continued for three years despite the healers' assurances they'd fade any day now.
Harry's slow breathing indicated that he was finally asleep again. She smiled sadly and gently tucked him back in, hopefully, he won't get nightmares again for the night.
She looked up and saw Rose asleep at the foot of the bed, hugging her brother's lower half. She smiled at the cute sight. While Rose looked almost nothing like James, she was very much like her Dad in behavior. A lump formed in her throat at the thought of James but she pushed the feelings away with practiced ease.
She scooped Rose up easily and took her back to her room. As she turned back to close her son's door, she knew she would have to do something about his nightmares, it was his consecutive 3rd year of having these nightmares. It was time to ask advice from an old acquaintance.
A/N : Some things that were not written but I want the readers to understand.
Why did Lily scream in Harry's dream? I think it was pretty straightforward. It was because of the wards.
Why does Lily think so low of the girl who lived title? Unlike canon, do remember that Harry, or in this case Rose, is not alone. Lily would've definitely asked what happened to Dumbledore and he would've explained all that James' sacrifice and all. So she knows what happened and thinks that wizards are so foolish that they think her little child could defeat the dark lord. She despises the popularity and problems her child would be facing because of that. Not that I would have kept her biased even if she didn't know about James' sacrifice.
Why did Albus refuse to heal Rose's scar? In the canon, without trying, when he didn't even know about the Horcruxes, he doesn't heal Harry's scar and instead says, 'some scars come in handy, I could never understand that and had Dumbledore keep that type of personality here as well. While he knew that it was a cursed scar and could not be healed, he had never even tried. And of course, now that he saw that Rose's scar was healed, he has his suspicions. If you're afraid I will bash Dumbledore, don't worry, as I said in the description, this fic will not have major character bashing.
Why did Rose's scar not heal fully? Honestly, that's just for this story to exist. If you really want justification then just assume it's because some ambient magic seeped into her scar that she got due to falling debris lol. '\(-_-)/'
Where is Harry's scar? Well, then my fic's name wouldn't be right, would it? Rest assured, you will know what happened that night. In canon, Harry remembers the contents of that night due to the dementor's attack. Similar things will happen here too and you will know what happened after some time.
