LawLu Week 2022 Day-4

Theme: Injured / Dress Up.

Chosen: Injured.

Dating a firefighter felt like navigating a ship on hide tides, dating an idiot firefighter felt like tackling a wild bull in a ship while on high tides. As an emergency ward doctor, it was his duty to care about the ones in need of immediate medical attention. Yet, when he was greeted by the dumb cute face lying on the bed with a dislocated arm, Dr. Trafalgar Law wanted to pick the pillow and press it on his boyfriend's face. The emergency room was crowded, a man with pieces of glass stuck on his legs, two minutes back a woman who had ingested peanuts and now was suffocating was sent to his ward, a child was crying while nurses tried to calm him down, three other firefighters were rushing inside with more injured people. The doctor made room for a middle-aged woman with head concussion, an elderly who lost their consciousness and a bruised teenager. This was not the daily nightmare the doctor was used to. The doors of hell were open and besides that sat his little devil of a lover curling his lips like everything was fine.

"You…" Law his hissed at his lover, whose left arm had dislocated after pulling out people from a collapsing building.

"In my defence, it was an accident. I had tied three people onto the rope, and just when I was being pulled out, I saw a fourth person under the door, we had no time to tie them, so I had to hold on them with my left hand."

"I am proud of you." Law gritted his teeth and sat on the bed to examine his partner's arms. "Tch… Lu…" Luffy was covered in minor cuts and bruises. Law was used to finding them on his lover. The moment he had said he loved the firefighter, he knew occupational hazards were part of the job. Awareness didn't mean it would be easier to process reality, on the contrary, awareness made anxiety a permanent guest in Law's head. Law had grown accustomed to the minor injuries, but to find his boyfriend with the same injury for the third time was asking for anger to burst out.

"I know, I am sorry."

"Luffy, you promised you will be careful! This is the third time in two years, I asked you to be careful of your left hand. Your body is not a machine. We can't replace it, like phone batteries and laptop parts! Dislocation of body parts can leave chronically unstable! Luffy why are so…" Law pinched his lover's soft cheeks with anger.

"Ouch… That hurts."

"More than that arm?"

"Yeah… I can't feel anything! See, my arm has no sense!" Law's idiot boyfriend Luffy poked his left arm with his other hand. "It is senseless!"

"…" Law stood up, walked behind Luffy and glared at his lover's arm, and in one swift move took it in his own dexterous palms and began rearranging the bone putting back into the shoulder socket.

"AOOOOWWWW"

"Oh now it hurts I see? I think I should just cut this arm away, isn't it better than fixing it every eight months?"

"Traffy… Don't be so mean. It was….AOOOOOOWWW! Not intentional." Luffy screamed.

"Luffy, are you okay?" one of Luffy's fellow firefighters rushed in. "Oh hi Law. It was not Luffy's fault. I was the one who was operating the hoist rope today. We really didn't have time."

"Franky, stay out of this, or I will text Robin."

"Sorry, Lu, you are on your own." And Luffy's friend was gone.

"Traitor." Luffy cried at the vanishing silhouette of his friend.

Law ignored Luffy for the next fifteen minutes, as he continued cleaning and patching up his boyfriend. Luffy tried multiple attempts at small talk, but the doctor was not having any of his bullshit. Deep down, the firefighter knew he was at fault. He met his boyfriend in this very emergency room a couple of years back, Luffy was a reckless newbie and his boyfriend a freshly appointed emergency resident. Luffy had been dropped on the bed with a wide wound on his shoulder, a bridge had collapsed and while rescuing the victims, an odd piece of junk had hit Luffy who was trying to shield the injured. That day Law was impressed by his courage, he had been cooing and cajoling him for being a hero. Luffy's heart had swollen in joy, and he had decided he was going to win over this doctor. After that, for the next five months, Luffy dropped by the emergency every week with some superficial injury. Every time, Law would gently nurse his injuries.

The doctor currently dressing him up was angry, and was in no mood to cajole or coo at his lover. In nine years, Law had spent all the affection he had for his heroic lover. One year of dating had revealed to Law, the reason his boyfriend was heroic because he was an idiot. Luffy rushed to help people without thinking of consequences, with only goal of saving life. Law respected Luffy's courage, but didn't mean he liked having to worry about his recklessness all the time. Being an emergency doctor was stressful enough, but to have a man who was constantly dealing with danger was scary.

"Remember the day I told you I want to go on a date with you?" Law broke his silence.

How could Luffy forget, Luffy had been dropping hints he wanted to date Law during his visits, but the doctor was so shy at Luffy's advances that he would blush and runaway the moment he was done treating Luffy. Finally, things had come colliding head on when Luffy actually returned with a severe head injury and Law had come greeting him with a smile only to find a delirious firefighter bleeding on the bed. Law had spent the whole night tending to him, and when Luffy had opened his eyes, he had held his palms and kissed them with tears running down his cheeks. Law was crying and smiling and scolding.

"You had told me, 'Next time you want to meet me, just ask me on a date instead of visiting me in my work place' and I promised, I would try to abide by your request." Luffy chuckled.

"And what did you say two years back?" Law wrapped bandages around his boyfriend's shoulder.

"That I will try not to be reckless, and I will ask for help." Luffy's voice was guilty.

"Did you ask for help or not today when you saw the fourth injured person?" Law asked sternly. Luffy avoided looking up and shook his head.

"Because you thought you could pull them on your own. And you did." Law sighed. "But what was the point of not asking to help, huh? Another firefighter would've come to help you, na? Instead of you thinking it out properly, you pulled the fourth person on your own, now I don't blame you for saving his life. But Lu! If I feel my body is exhausted after two back to back surgeries, I don't rush into a third surgery, do I?"

"No. You don't."

"Why?"

"You might make a mistake, and it can cause bigger trouble."

"Now that you will be knocked out from active duty for couple of days, you have single-handedly reduced the manpower of your team! I know I was not there in the building! Still you should've asked for help! Do you like it when you are forced to sit in an office and do paperwork?" Law sat beside his lover again and took his chin into his fingers. Turning Luffy's face left and right, Law's thumb brushed against Luffy's stitch mark below his left eye.

"No."

Law continued rubbing his gloved thumb on the stitch mark. Law had patched him after a building had been blown apart and among the rescue was the culprit who tried to run away from the hospital and Luffy happened to be there helping move in the patients. The arsonist had tried to stab anyone near him, but Law's boyfriend tackled the fellow and ended up almost losing an eye.

"I really can't deal with you any more." Law sighed and dropped his hands and began collecting the mess on Luffy's bed, the dirty torn uniform shirt, phone and wallet. Luffy had never seen his lover so dejected in the nine years they had spent together. Luffy instantly grabbed Law's apron with his working hand and pulled him closer and hugged his lean waist.

"Don't break up with me. I am sorry. I didn't mean to worry you, babe." Luffy buried his dirty face into Law's waist. "I am sorry." He was injured but he was not weak. If Luffy wanted, he could pin Law down with one hand and remain in that position for hours. "I am sorry, I will try to be better." Luffy mumbled. Law stood stiff as multiple eyes landed on the couple. The staff knew about the doctor's long time boyfriend, but the emergency patients and their guardians didn't know they were lovers. They saw a firefighter having a nervous breakdown in the arms of the doctor in charge of looking after him. Murmurs and cries were replaced by the buzz of hushed up conversations. Doctor Law found a blush run up his neck and settle into the cheeks, while a sharp pang of embarrassment burned inside his chest. Luffy was not going to let him go.

"I am sorry. Don't break up with me. I beg you."

"Lu…"

"Don't break up with me." Luffy looked up and pleaded with watery puppy eyes, and was met with a scowl from the top.

"Monkey D Luffy, who told you I was breaking up with you?" Law controlled his desire to bark.

"You… you just said you don't want to deal with me. And began packing my stuff."

"Yes! I can't deal with your stupid face right now! I have other patients to look after. The more I look at you, the more I want to yell at you! You are patched up, I will write a prescription. I was folding your torn shirt as I need to clear the bed for the next patient! I am texting Franky, he will drop you home." Law pinched Luffy's cheeks again.

"So you are not breaking up with me?"

"Why would I?" Law pretended to be stern as he typed away on his phone.

"You sounded so angry." Luffy cried again.

"Yes I am angry, don't you dare think it is over. Doesn't mean I am leaving you. I love you too much for that. And if I dump you, god knows what sort of recklessness you will get yourself into. Who knows, one day I will have to bury your decapitated body all because I dumped you. No, thanks! We are never breaking up." Law tapped Luffy's working hand, begging him to release him of his death grip.

"Why am I decapitated in your break-up fantasy?"

"If you do not release me, there is something else that will get cut off too." Law warned.

"I will wait for you in home." Luffy let go with a smile.

"You do that, if you want a bath wait for me okay, if it is urgent ask Franky to wipe you with a towel soaked in warm water. If you need a bath badly, wait for me! My duty ends at 6am. I will come and clean you up. " Law began to walk away towards another patient.

"Traffy…" Luffy spoke loudly enough to draw the attention of people near him.

"What?" Law turned around at his nickname.

"I need to wash my hair too"

"Then go home and rest" Law waved his hand as he got busy with his next patient. Luffy sighed and smiled to himself.

"What are you grinning about like a fool?" Franky stood in front of Luffy, ready to drop him home.

"Traffy…"

"What did Law say? He told me to take you home."

"He said he loved me too much!" Luffy grinned shamelessly.

"No shit Sherlock! Took you ten years to realize!" Franky laughed.

"No… No, you don't realize. He was worried about me, and he wanted to scold me. And I thought he was going to dump me, my heart beat stopped for a moment, and then he says he loves me. Franky he loves despite me making him angry." Luffy was giggling like a manic as Franky helped him stand up and covered him with a jacket.

"Okay, I got it. Let us leave before Law comes to chase me again, do you want me to look for him before we leave though?" Franky asked.

"Nah… He will come home as soon as possible. I know him better than others." Luffy boasted.

"I don't understand you man, one moment you fear he will dump you and next moment you are bragging. No wonder he was so angry with you. Let's go home." While Franky helped Luffy walk out of the hospital, Law kept glancing at their receding back until they walked out of the exit. Once the door was shut, doctor Trafalgar Law sighed in relief.

"Will you be okay, doctor?" a nurse asked as she observed Law sigh too many times.

"Yeah, I was worried about my partner. I am fine now. Tell me what is wrong with this patient."

"Apparently, he was trapped under debris and a door for more than three hours, he was pulled out just before the ceiling gave out. Their breathing is shallow, the pulse is dropping too, but they seem to have some consciousness."

"Send him for an immediate scan, check for rib or spine injury and most importantly look for an internal bleeding."

"Alright doctor."

"Do…ct…or…" The patient in discussing called for Law. Instead of being taken aback or feeling shocked, the doctor bent down to listen to the trembling patient.

"Wil…. I… lliii…ve?" the patient used all his strength to ask this question

Law gently patted the patient's head and smiled; he took a few breaths to observe the patient and cleared his throat, "Do not worry! We will save you! My boyfriend risked his life to save you! Now it is my turn to save you, sir." Law pushed the bed into the nurse's care and sent them away. He took out his phone and texted to his lover.

[ I am going to save the fourth person you rescued. ]

[ Get some rest. ]

[ See you later. ]

[ And ]

[ I love you. ]

THE END

disclaimer: not my manga

This story was abandoned after two paragraphs a few years back as I was not in the mood. It was meant to be part of my One Shot Series Role Play, where Law and Luffy are found in different AUs with different lives. Somehow it never made it into the collection. I was tempted to write this fic as a bit more angsty, I had grand plans of injuring them both. But then I realized, I do not like angsty stuff much! Writing my angsty story Luffy and Law: Freedom's Call is already making me bitter because of the pain I am going to inflict on them! So midway typing this story we, as in I, decided to change it into a bickering couple story set in a hospital emergency ward! And I have zero medical knowledge and I didn't research either, generally I watch dramas and read manga if I write about a particular profession. For the number of times I made Law a doctor, I apologize for no research! I do not I like hospital dramas or manga. I just watch random U-tube videos of hospital drama clip compilations to get a general idea.

For those who are reading my Lawlu Week 2022 Entries every day! Thank you! Please Keep supporting us LawLu/LuLaw nutters! Kudos make us happy, but comments make us go feral!
