Academics had been important to Ami Mizuno. Her mother Dr. Saeko Mizuno believed that academics developed brains and common sense and helped one gain important life skills that one needed in order to function in society which meant it was important for her to do her homework and end up studying for exams. She came to have to be the best at academics.

All the school subjects at Juuban Middle School included arithmetic, art, biology, chemistry, debate, English, geography, history, home economics, literature, music, nutrition, and physical education. Big emphasis was placed on education in Japan. Students came to be expected to complete their homework and do study for exams as it was important that they pass with the highest grades possible. If one failed it did affect the high school entrance exams they needed in order to get into a good high school or college.

Academics were the only thing that Ami was good at. Ami excelled at arithmetic—algebra, basic order of operations in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, counting, decimals, elimination, estimation, fractions, and geometry. Biology and chemistry came easy to her. Computers were something that she loved so she knew full well how to use a computer which was a skill all her of her friends lacked although she had offered to teach them anytime they wanted to learn. Drawing was something her father taught her so she could draw quite well. English was something she could read and write in, but her fluency in speaking it was not as good as Minako's. Geography and history facts were easy to remember as she always re-read the chapters in her textbooks and saw to it that her notes contained all the necessary information for her to retain the knowledge of what she had read on her own, but she could admit Makoto could beat her at home economics and Minako could beat her in physical education which were the only two classes she had to work harder at in order to stay on top although she had been taking lessons in music on how to play the harp so she was good at music. It had been her prerogative to be far ahead in her textbooks than other students were. She just had to be far farther ahead than the rest of her classmates.

Grades were the only thing she had any control in her life in. It had helped her deal with the pain of attempting to make friends with her other classmates who would see how desperate she was to fit in, but only used her to get good grades and had nothing to do with her once they got what they wanted from her due to her IQ supposedly being around 300 and how she scored the highest grades on mock exams in the entire whole country of Japan. Just like academics and books comforted her whenever she was miserable in missing her father who had claimed to accept her for who she was, believe in her, care about her, and do love her and end up being proud of her for her academic success when she was little, but had divorced her mother and never picked up the telephone whenever she tried to call him.

However, it had not stopped the rumors that she was a rude and stuck-up snob who thought that she was better than everybody else due to how smart she was. It made people unable to accept her for who she was, believe nothing in her, care nothing for her, and dislike her and enjoy calling her names and degrading her with insults especially when teachers praised her in front of other students and proceeded to point out the other's shortcomings in order to humiliate them into doing better. Bullies proceeded to call her teacher's pet in addition to being a rude and stuck-up snob. People never knew how much it hurt her feelings over something she had no control over.

Ami still remembered the conversation she had overheard between Usagi, Usagi's best friend Naru, the nerd Umino, and some other girls talking about who she was and her being the best at academics. Big mistake to be listening into what they were saying about her. The girls claimed that her mother was a rich and successful doctor so she could pay for the expensive cram school Ami went to every day after school was over and that she thought she was so much better than them because she was smart and that she kept to herself because of it. She did glare at them for talking about her when she was in hearing shot for the mean and nasty things they were saying about her, but she said nothing to defend herself for she hated arguments of any kind and did not want to let them know how much they had hurt her feelings.

People can be cruel to others when they wish to be.

Academics were also important to her because she wanted to be a doctor like her mother when she grew up. Being a doctor like her mother meant everything to her. Ami could help those who needed medical care. Doctors were needed to save peoples' lives.

"Why do you want to be a doctor so much, Ami-chan?" Usagi asked her once.

"I want to be able to help people who are sick," Ami answered. "Being a doctor can help save lives from people who have AIDs, Alzheimer's, brain tumors, cancer, dementia, eating disorders, heart attacks, HIV, lupus, Parkinson's, or strokes as well victims of car accidents, dealing with pregnant women about to give birth, and people ending up being shot or stabbed. My mother came to save one man who had been sat on by a cow. Cows weigh a ton so it could have killed him. Mom deserves to be known as a hero and I want to be just like her someday."

"Do you think that you will find a cure for cancer?" Makoto burst in.

"I would love to!" Ami commented happily.

"Is that why academics mean so much to you?" Minako declared.

"Only partly," Ami exclaimed.

"What do you mean by that, Ami-chan?" Rei asked.

"Being the best at academics is the only thing I am good at," Ami answered, "for me to complete my homework and do study for exams so that I can get into a good high school and college once I graduate from high school, but academics back before I met all of you was my way of dealing with not having any friends. Academics and books can never hurt you the way people can. I did get bullied a lot by others or had been used to get them good grades and never have anything to do with me once they got what they wanted from me so I gave up trying to make friends a long time ago. I enjoy learning new things, but I also study now because I want to help you guys out when it comes to your own grades and help you learn that studying can be rewarding itself so you can gain valuable life skills when it comes to it. For me it also helps us win when it comes to battling against evil and the forces of darkness. If it saves your lives then I will continue to be the best that I can at academics."
