"I thought they said this mine was supposed to be monster infested. What gives?" Technoblade said as he looked around the large cavern that didn't have a single monster in sight.
For the world of the SMP, the words 'monster infested tunnel' were used to describe areas that had so many monsters that they were tripping over each other in order to get at you. We're talking about at least a few of mobs in every chunk. So when Technoblade reached the mine to find it completely empty, he felt more than a little robbed.
"Well, whatever, we were really here for materials anyways." Technoblade grunted. He needed around fifteen pounds worth of diamonds in order to create an enchanting table. It was an absolute must going forward for him, being a higher priority than even a monster grinder.
He could get the raw materials he would need to shape his monster grinder while he was at it anyways.
"Are you really the Hero of the Sword?" Raphtalia asked Technoblade tentatively as he observed the different walls, trying to decide where to start. It wasn't like any one position was better than the others, but he was trying to channel his 'Main Character' powers to tell him where would be best.
"Hm… Guess I am. Not that it is a good thing." Techno admitted.
"Wha? Why would you say that?" Keel asked him, just as shocked as Raphtalia about his status as a 'Hero'.
"Because nothing good ever comes of being a hero." Technoblade said. "I speak from experience when I say that you either die a Hero, or you live long enough to be abandoned and betrayed by everything you ever thought you were fighting for. Sooner or later, this 'Hero' status is going to bite me in the butt. Hopefully I will have myself some metal britches before it comes to that." Putting his hand to the wall he grinned. "Yeah. I've got a good feeling about this spot."
He then went into his inventory and withdrew 'Toothpick', the Netherite Pickaxe he had once used to gouge out the teeth from Quackity's face during his escape from his own person execution. It was one of his prized possessions. One that he took with him to the grave and beyond.
The look of enchanted netherite was unmistakable. The otherworldly shine that made you feel like you were looking straight into a nebula. The feel of the worn wood beneath Techno's fingers was familiar and filled him with calm.
…Then it zapped him.
Technoblade let out a yelp of pain as the sudden shock and an unexplained force ripped the pickaxe from his hand, sending it flying into the wall, where the sharpened point of the tool dug into the stone surface as if it was warm butter. "Hey, what gives?" Technoblade complained, before a message appeared in front of him.
[A Hero is not permitted to use another weapon.]
"...Hagh!? No other weapons!? But… But… It's Toothpick for crying out loud!" Technoblade shouted in indignation.
He stared at his old faithful. Wondering what he was going to do for mining if he couldn't use it.
…He could give it to one of the slaves to use.
No. That wouldn't work. Toothpick was meant to be wielded by a full grown adult. They were too small to swing it properly, and had no experience in mining. They wouldn't be efficient with it.
'Absorb it. Absorb Toothpick into the Holy Sword and you can unlock a mining function.'
"...No. No. Not Toothpick." Technoblade said, looking at the pickaxe as though it was a child. He knew he was being sentimental about what was just a pickaxe, but he had gone through a lot with that pick.
The voices started to mock him for his hesitation, and reminding him that a tool is only so good as it could be put to use.
It was with a heavy heart that Technoblade lowered the Legendary Holy Sword down next to Toothpick, so that the blue orb touched the cool netherite metal.
"Goodbye. May you give angels poor dental check-ups in heaven." Techno said softly as pickaxe was sucked into the sword.
Doubles of different new weapon forms unlocked related to pickaxes and the materials used in the creations of Toothpick, including a form related to enchanting. But Technoblade was only interested in one.
[Netherite Pickaxe Sword (0/50) | Rarity: Super Rare | Base Damage: 7 | Equip Bonus: +150% Mining Efficiency Up (Unmastered) | Passive Effect: Store Ore | Proficiency:0%]
The Legendary Holy Sword shifted into a form resembling a netherite pickaxe, only with a sword handle at the bottom of it.
'Upgrade it! Upgrade!'
The voices demanded and Technoblade followed their instructions to do just that, using energy gathered from 'Proficiencies' he had with other weapons to 'Awaken' the weapon form, then more energy gathered from monsters to further upgrade it.
[Netherite Pickaxe Sword +5 (0/50) | Rarity: Ultra Rare | Base Damage: 29 | Equip Bonus: +300% Mining Efficiency Up, +100% Item Drop When Mining (Awakened) | Passive Effect: Store Ore, Ore Detection | Proficiency:0%]
With a casual swing of the pick, he cleaved upon a large gash in the side of the cave wall, dislodging what had to be 25 cubic feet of stone.
All of the stone immediately disappeared into thin air, moved into Techno's storage.
Keel and Raphtalia watched with slack jaws as Technoblade simply walked forward towards the wall, stone and dirt disappearing as he went. His progression was slightly angled downwards, and soon he was no longer visible by the light of the torches that he had left with them. "You kids hang tight! Just got to find a few diamonds and some iron then we will be moving on!"
The slaves and beasts alike watched him go with confused faces, but just did as he said and stayed up.
"I can't believe that guy is a Legendary Hero." Keel said as he played with the young twin-tailed fox, which Technoblade had dubbed Fundyer. "I thought Heroes were supposed to be… you know. Heroic."
"He's… different. But I don't think he isn't a bad person." Raphtalia said. She sat on the ground nearby with the two wolves, Apollo and Artemis with her. They and Pooh the ursa were tired from the day's walk and chewing on some of the meat that Techno had left them.
Neither Keel, Raphtalia, or any of the beasts were very high levels. Having lived sheltered lives, the only experience they ever got was from the monsters Techno killed on their way to the cave, which grew them to level 3. So they felt a little nervous sitting there alone, even with the daggers he had gotten them.
"There are worse, but…" Keel's hand went to his chest, where his slave mark could be seen underneath the collar of his shirt.
While it was impossible to compare Technoblade to that other man, he wasn't exactly treating them like children. To him, they were still slaves.
It was while the pair was pondering their new situation, lamenting the loss of their freedom and their families, that a blast from their past showed up and made the both of them shiver in fear.
A low growl, echoing upon itself, filled the chamber.
Keel and Raphtalia turned every which way, trying to find the source of the noise until the large figure of a two-headed dog monster entered into the space illuminated by their torchlight.
As the pair of monster heads let out a howl, Raphtalia screamed in fright, crumpling down and putting her hands over her ears. Keel was frozen as well, as the beast reminded the children of the three-headed dog that had appeared during the waves. The one that had slaughtered their parents, and nearly everyone they knew and loved.
But the tamed monsters with them did not show the same fear. They all got up and charged the massive dog.
Not that it did much good.
Even the Ursa was young, not yet full grown, and a low level. If standing on its hind legs, it would only be about four and a half feet tall. Meanwhile, the two-headed dog was over seven feet tall at its shoulders, its heads as big as Fundyer's entire body.
It was while the monsters were being beaten down that Keel recovered his senses enough to come up with a plan.
Run.
"Raph! We've got to go! Come on!" Keel shouted, pulling on the young girl's arm, trying to get her to move. But it was no good, Raphtalia was like a sack of potatoes, and Keel lacked the strength to move on. "Please snap out of it! We've got to… we've got to…" Keel looked back to see the animals on the ground, the monster dog starting to approach them, blood dripping from its mouths.
Keel was scared. Terrified even. But looking down at Raphtalia, and realizing he wasn't going to be able to escape with her, he made his choice.
Drawing the dagger he had been given by Technoblade, he went running at the monster, screaming on the top of his lungs. "I won't let you touch her!" His swing missed as the dog leaned out of the way before striking down. Keel let out a scream of pain as his shoulder was pierced by the beast's teeth and one of its heads lifted him up and tossed him to the side.
"K…Keel…" Raphtalia said, seeing the monster tossing her only remaining friend to the ground and the blood pooling out as Keel continued to twitch on the floor, alive, but in too much pain to do anything.
His continued movements drew the monster around and it looked ready to finish the job.
"No!" Raphtalia shouted, her fear of losing someone else outweighing her fear of the monster. She charged at it with her own dagger, swinging wildly.
The beast kicked her hard and she felt to the ground, hitting her head hard enough to split her skull and make stars dance in front of her eyes.
Her vision swirled, making two heads seem like six as the monster leaned over her and she started to whimper, tears in her eyes.
She didn't want to die. She was afraid to die.
A rock, the size of watermelon, collided with the monster's head, followed by two more. It beat away the monster, and stunned it, as a large figure moved in from the hole in the wall.
A loud cry of pain, the pain of an injured animal, shook the room and as Raphtalia finally regained her senses, she saw Technoblade standing over her, his pickaxe dripping with blood.
Not far away, the monster dog still stood, one of his heads having had part of its upper jaw ripped out by Technoblade's attack.
Technoblade took out a potion. A splash potion of regeneration and tossed it on the ground.
The vapers of it traveled outwards, and as Raphtalia, Keel and the animals breathed them in, their bodies rapidly started to heal.
Of course, it healed the two-headed dog as well, not that it mattered.
While it was still whirling with confusion at its suddenly regrowing teeth, Technoblade swung his pickaxe again, hitting the other head, and ripping out its teeth. Another blow slammed against its leg, tearing it open and causing the monster to hobble.
The monster lunged at Technoblade, trying to stop him from hurting it anymore, but even as his legs bent in order to strike, Techno had moved to the side, causing the lung to miss.
Technoblade hooked the head of the pick underneath the monster's rear leg, tripping it and sending it to the ground, where he brought his weapon in a two handed thrust down on its ribs.
There was an audible crack as the ribs broke and the dog let out a wheeze of pain.
Not that Technoblade stopped there.
He swiped at the monster again and again, cutting open its legs and body, smashing the head of his pick into it in order to break its legs, tearing up its guts, but all the while holding back enough to not kill it outright.
And as the dog lay, a bleeding mess on the ground, he dropped his pick to the ground next to it, saddled it, and wrapped his two massive hands around its heads. "This is the last mistake you will ever make." Technoblade snarled as the cries reached an all new level. The animal screamed in pain as Technoblade dug his fingers into its eyes.
Then, with the creature completely crippled and helpless, Technoblade got off of it and moved to check on the kids.
"Everyone okay?" Technoblade said, looking them all over. "Looks like everyone is alive. That's good."
"Are… Are you not going to kill it?" Keel asked as he watched the monster whimpering miserable on the ground. It was so pathetic looking now, that it was disconcerting, to think that it was the same creature that they had been so afraid of.
Technoblade could have killed it. He could have taken off both of its heads with a single swing, but instead he chose to inflict as much pain upon it as humanly possible. Transforming it from a terrifying monster that threatened their lives into a miserable creature worthy of their pity.
"It will bleed out soon enough. I am not so merciful as to give it a painless death after it hurt the two of you." Technoblade grunted. He then reached out and ruffled the kids' hair with his blood soaked hands. "You did good, standing up to it. But you kids need training. Still, if you keep it up, I might just learn your names."
The pair looked at Technoblade's smiling face, his jolly nature hard to connect with the brutal beast which they had just witnessed, even as the blood dripped from his hands and stained their hair, running down until it mixed with the tears on their cheeks.
The pair of ten-year-olds broke down and hugged Technoblade, crying into his chest.
"Hey! None of that!" Technoblade said, standing up and shaking them off. "It's too early for hugs. Now come on. I got what we came here for. It is now time to build that monster grinder."
"Y…Yes Master." Keel and Raphtalia said, wiping away their tears.
That was when they heard a beeping sound.
They all turned to see the incubator which held the mystery egg flashing as the countdown on the display reached zero. The egg inside started to shift about as a new life attempted to fight its way into the world.
Technoblade removed the outer covering and lifted up the egg, curious as to what was going to come out.
The shell cracked little by little until the leg of a bird came shooting out of one of its sides.
Technoblade watched as the shell fell away to reveal a bird that looked like a very large chick, with pitch black feathers, like those of a crow. "Oh, it's a bird." Technoblade said, with a laugh of amusement as the bird chirped at him and started to rub its head against his blood stained hand, apparently thinking that Technoblade was his mommy. "Wonder if it is a girl or a boy… hm… You'll need a name either way."
Seeing the bird's blade feathers and its large blue eyes, it reminded him of his oldest and truest friend; the 'Crow Father', Philza.
"Alright little guy. From now on, your name will be Chilza." Technoblade said, rubbing its cheek with one finger. "Welcome to the family. Chilza."
