Chapter 2

The meadow that Markus found himself in was bathed in the soft light of the rising sun as he massaged his temples to ward off the coming headache from his circumstances.

No matter how Markus looked at things, he was stuck in this medieval world for at least fifty years, something that did not make him happy, nor made him feel safe.

'Low danger world my ass!'

After a few deep breaths to center himself, he patted down his clothes again to see if he had any more burs from his time laying down on the grass, and looked at his surroundings.

Although the amount of trees around him were few, there were still enough of them to block his view of anything beyond a couple of kilometers in any direction, so Markus had no idea in which direction he should go.

'Well, there is no better time to try my magic then when i'm lost in the middle of nowhere' Markus thought with rising frustration, and flickering wonder.

Almost immediately Markus knew that if he wanted to do something with his new magic capability he just had to think of an effect and a few options became open to him, quite a few had counterparts in his memories in other fictitious worlds, and once Markus pondered on such worlds, a greater number of options were open to him, with detailed instructions on how to achieve almost any effect he may wish.

At this moment, Markus ability was only limited by his restrictions and his magical output, something that would expand with time.

In a way, Markus did not gain magic from his victimizer, but magic fueled reality manipulation.

With a chuckle, Markus utilized the one magic spell that he deemed most important of all, even more so in a word without modern amenities.

'Prestidigitation'

Markus huffed and puffed, marveling at feeling weary even without having done any kind of heavy labor.

After using Prestidigitation to dry his clothes from dew and patch up a couple of fraying edges, Markus experimented a bit to see his current limit.

Markus used what could be considered quite a few utility type spells to build for himself a premium camp. Utilizing a mixture of Transfiguration and Transmutation he got himself a waterproof tent with a sinfully comfortable bedroll and a very well made firepit, and a few area spells to avert the attention of both humans, animals and insects.

But it was as he got himself the sunken in firepit the he got an outside the box idea, Markus remembered one time when he was camping as a child and as he dug up the earth for the firepit then he found a buried coin.

Concentrating on his desire, Markus pushed almost all of his remaining energy into summoning to him all lost pieces of worked metal in the local area.

After feeling suddenly drained and almost losing his head to a rusted and broken sword that came from behind him, Markus was now the proud owner of ten iron coins, forty copper coins, fifteen silver coins, nineteen gold coins, four swords, two axes heads, eight spear heads, an even dozen knifes, a couple of hammers, over twenty metal spoons, an assorted amount of rings, necklaces, pins, brooches and bracelets, a great amount of broken links that surely came from different chains, a few pots and pans, an uncountable amount of nails and quite a few pieces of armor.

Of course, almost every piece of metal was caked with mud and broken, something that he would need his go to Prestidigitation to clean, and a few Repair type spells too, but Markus was no longer broke or without the basic necessities beyond food.

It was at noon that Markus felt that his reserves were full once more, and he was starting to feel hunger.

After the last few hours of considering his options, Markus felt that he should be most aware of his energy reserves going forward, because as he thought on what he could do about food Markus became aware that simply conjuring food was possible for him, but at the moment he could maybe conjure enough food for a single meal without tiring himself out, and even then it would be a close thing.

Of course, by tiring himself out his output and reserves would grow a little bit faster, but the gain would not really be worth the momentary weakness of being wiped out at the moment.

So his decision was not to conjure food, but to Summon it.

After a dozen spells were Markus summoned bread, cheese, fruits and some meat from different places all around the world, specifically places that would not miss this small amount of food, he started on his meal and pondered his next steps.

Markus was not all that knowledgeable about the world he found himself in, since he only saw the first season of Game of Thrones when it first came out, and then decided to wait to binge watching once it was complete, and simply gave up on it once he saw the negative reviews on the last season.

Having also not read the books, Markus knowledge was from, mainly, the stories that he read on the forums that he frequented.

And since most stories were later in the timeline as far as he remembered, Markus was not sure about the recent events.

It was maybe something about pirates? Some tencoins emperor or something.

'Well, once I find a city, I will learn what is happening around here'

It was as Markus was cleaning his first ring that he wondered how useful a Ring of Sustenance would have been.

Over a dozen different method appearing in his mind on how to enchant such rings shocked Markus of his almost auto-pilot state of casting Prestidigitation and Repair Item.

Letting the dainty silver ring tumble down from his hand, Markus let a wide smile part his lips.

Soon, Markus was concentrating once more on what more he could do, and marveled on how comprehensive his magic ability was.

Not only spellcasting was at his fingertips, but enchanting, alchemy, rituals, rune, potion making, magical martial arts and even magical breathing exercises were available to him.

Markus was now sure that his victimizer was speaking the truth, because now that he was better aware of his possible options, he agreed with him that this world was a low danger one for him, something that he doubted at least once before.

Because without attack magic, Markus was not sure he would be able of guaranteeing his survival in a world as brutal as this one.

The next day Markus marveled at how rested he felt.

After finding out that he could enchant things, the first thing he did was get for himself two rings that he felt were absolutely necessary for him.

The Ring of Sustenance guaranteed that food and rest were no longer things for him to worry about, even more so once he used a few spells to accelerate the ring's attuning itself to him, making it's ability work without the week long wait normally needed to attune it to it's user.

The second ring Markus enchanted was a Ring of Protection Against Divination, something that he realized suddenly during dinner that he would need, due to greenseers, red priests, shadow binders and warlocks, and even other things that he was not aware of.

And now that the sun once more rose on the horizon, Markus decided that he needed to find for himself the closest settlement.

To make things easier for him, he used a small set of spells to summon to him a few birds and enchanted them into pseudo familiars, and sent them in all directions in search of a town or village.

For the next three hours as Markus waited for the return of the birds he set about cleaning up the camp, putting every item that he now had into a small Bag of Holding the he created then and there, and set about summoning to himself some items that he would need to blend in and move about.

Summoning clean clothes, a carpet and some writing implements while also creating through transmutation a special item that he had an amazing idea for.

Of course, since Markus was not an idiot and he remembered his victimizer going on and on about Karma, he spent a little bit of extra energy and targeted the summoning at pirates', bandits' and thieves' loot.

No need to do an ill to a possible law abiding citizen, there are enough assholes out there that would not miss a few assorted items and Markus's Karma would be a little bit lighter at the end of the day.

It was as the third hour of waiting for the birds' return ended that Markus finished exhausting himself enchanting his purloined carpet into a flying carpet with inbuilt invisibility and attention diversion spells after managing to create a special little item.

'I have magic now, no way will I waste my time walking around like a shmuck' Markus thought with satisfaction greater then when he first go a driver's license.

It was as he mentally patted himself on the back for being smart that the birds came back.

After waiting a few minutes for a small amount of his energy reserves to refill that Markus used a different spell, taking all that the pseudo familiar birds saw and created a small but detailed map with the paper and ink he had summoned beforehand.

After dismissing the birds and letting them fly away from him, Markus focused on his new map.

A few small villages were quite close to him, but only the fact that his spells increased the birds stamina and flying speed allowed them to find a medium sized town in the short time that he gave them, it being quite far from his present location.

Just the thought about walking till this unnamed town gave him phantom pains in his legs.

It may be a little lame for Markus to consider himself smart just by having thought of making a flying carpet to go around a little bit faster, but he simply could not help himself.

After a bit of messing around with the flying carpet and finding out that he still had his fear of heights, which was a bummer, but he was given magic, not an overhaul of his mind.

So he went on flying towards the town he found at top speed, but kept close to the earth, no more the two meters above ground.

After just twenty minutes and passing over two small farming villages, he found the town.

It was quite a quaint little thing.

Using the carpet's attention diversion spells he entered the town without going through the gate.

Thirty seconds later he flew back out of the town, gagging from the awful smell.

For a moment there he forgot that this was a medieval level world with atrocious public sanitation.

So much for starting his adventure on a high note.

After enchanting two more rings for himself, one which would defend his senses from being attacked by the poor personal hygiene of the locals, and another that gave him a normalization aura, so that how ever he may different from others around Markus would not stand out, so Markus entered the town once more.

Walking around, he was first astounded by how short the people around him were.

'It's probably from lacking nutrition' He thought.

After finding a small tavern and refusing the local food due to the fact that food preparation has not even been conceived as a dream by the locals, Markus found for himself one of the local drunks.

By using Charm and Befuddling spells Markus learned where he was.

He was in a town that had four names. One was the name of the town for when it was independent, the second was for when it was used as a hideout for the latest iteration of the free army for the unification of Essos(an inherited name for used by brigands for some legitimacy for the last decade), another was for when it was a Pentos trade outpost, and the last one was for when it was a Braavosi protectorate.

It seems it changed constantly. At least thrice a year.

But that was not truly important.

What was was trying out the special little item he enchanted before hand.

A monocle enchanted with a unique version of Detect Alignment, whereby using Markus would be able to see if people around him committed any crimes that stained their Karma.

He needed a few experimental subjects to see if the plans he thought about were possible, and if he would experiment on people, it would at least be on people that deserved it.

AN: The MC does not have a lot of knowledge of the world that he found himself in, so he does not yet know what he should have as a priority yet going forward. I know what he will do, but he doesn't (isn't that the same with all stories? hehe), so the MC still did not decide how he should munchkin things up yet, although he does have a few ideas.
