Chapter 6

.

Connor waited in his cell for the 24 hours to be over. Finally it was, and he was free to go. Duncan was waiting for him.

.

Duncan: We need to get you to the church.

Connor: Are you sure it's safe at this point?

Duncan: We've both seen some pretty evil immortals. Have you ever known any of us to ever kill on holy ground?

Connor: No. Even Kurgan. I was lighting a candle on Heather's birthday, and he taunted me. He bragged about how he'd killed Ramirez, and he'd raped Ramirez' widow.

Duncan: I thought Ramirez wasn't married at the time of his death.

Connor: Kurgan raped Heather, she never told me. I never knew until that moment, and it wasn't until that moment that he realized that Heather was my wife. Not that he was in any way sorry, he continued to brag. But as evil as he was, and as much as I wanted to kill him. Even then neither of us dared to kill on holy ground.

.

Duncan and Connor then sensed the presence of another immortal close by. Jacob then revealed himself.

.

Jacob: You are right. There is only one account of an immortal breaking this rule. Two immortals were fighting in the temple of Apollo, one beheaded the other. This was 79 CE, just before Mount Vesuvius erupted.

Duncan: Joe Dawson told me the same story, but he admitted it was more legend then fact.

Connor: You had Rachel murdered.

Jacob: To throw you off your game.

Connor: I'm going to kill you.

Jacob: Things have changed, we now have a common enemy.

Duncan: Who?

Jacob: The watchers. They were the ones who killed our kind at the church. I admit, I went there to kill immortals before they got to the church. Those who made it, we tried taunting them to come out, when the watchers attacked. I think they were followers of James Horton.

Duncan: Horton is dead.

Jacob: But his ideas, about exterminating all of us, those have continued after his death. I barely got away before everyone else was knocked out with tranquilizers. They chopped their heads off while they slept, and then placed their bodies outside to hide their own involvement.

Connor: And we should believe you?

Jacob: As long as we fight each other they wait, ready to eliminate the last of us. We need to agree to a temporary truce.

Connor: To do what?

Jacob: To eliminate the watchers.

Duncan: I'm good friends with one of them.

Jacob: I'm not. I don't trust him.

Duncan: You hurt Joe Dawson and I will kill you myself.

Jacob: When this is all over I'm sure we'll find a reason to fight. Until then, we need to work together.

.

Neither Connor nor Duncan was certain whether or not Jacob was telling the truth. They couldn't figure out how Jacob's cult could get the other immortals outside the church, and no immortal would ever kill on holy ground. They didn't agree to work together, but they agreed not to kill each other. Not yet anyway.
