Chapter 10
.
After he killed Vlad, Duncan immediately tried to call his friends. Connor, Amanda, Methos. They had to be warned that they weren't safe on holy ground like they thought they were. So far none of them answered. Duncan and Vlad had fought in a church, Connor was suppossed to meet Mirabeau at a mosque, Amanda went to see Grace in a synagogue, and Methos went to see Jacob in a buddhist temple. Duncan tried to find his friends, before Connor finally found him. Connor was clearly wounded, Mirabeau caught him off guard.
.
Duncan: Thank God you're alive.
Connor: God? We spent all these centuries thinking we could at least be safe in God's house, no matter what minor differences there might be. Even Kurgan wouldn't have dared to kill on holy ground.
Duncan: He manipulated us, threw us off balance so we wouldn't see what was right in front of us.
Connor: And I fell for it.
Duncan: I haven't been able to find Amanda or Methos. I tried calling you.
Connor: Sorry, my cellphone was destroyed in the fight. Maybe there phones were also destroyed.
Duncan: Maybe.
.
Finally Duncan did get a phone call, the called ID said it was Methos.
.
Duncan: Methos?
Jacob: Not quite.
Duncan: You son of a bitch, you betrayed us.
Jacob: We worship evil, you thought we wouldn't desecrate the house of God.
Duncan: Then Methos is dead?
Jacob: He is. In case you're wondering, so is Amanda. Grace is somewhat hurt, but she's still standing. Joe Dawson is also dead, my watchers saw to that.
Duncan: Your watchers?
Jacob: Yeah, some like minded individuals who know that the end is near, and want to be on the winning side. Turn on the news and you'll hear about the large building, Watcher's Headquarters, being destroyed by some terrorist group. Sadly not all loyalists were there at the time, then we could have killed all of them at once. Still, my watchers will eliminate all of those survivors soon enough. The only thing I'm not certain of is whether Connor or Mirabeau is dead.
Connor: Hey Jacob, I have some dental work with your name on it. How about we set up a meeting so I can give it to you, personally.
Jacob: I guess it's down to two versus two. But I never liked playing fair. Grace here is wounded, if she were to lose to one of you, I'd rather you not be too strong..
.
Like the other cult members, Grace was a strong believer in survival of the fittest. She had been wounded by Amanda, by her own logic she didn't deserve to live. Still, she had done much evil in her life, hoped it would impress her boss. For now, she calmly lowered her head and waited for her death. Connor and Duncan heard the quickening. There were now only three immortals left standing, and Jacob was coming for them.
.
Connor: So this is the end.
Duncan: Maybe. But we will stop him, together.
Connor: Yes, we will.
.
Without warning Connor attacked Duncan, who tried to defend himself.
.
Duncan: What the hell?
Connor: Neither of us can defeat Jacob alone.
Duncan: Then we fight him together.
Connor: Exactly. One of us needs to kill the other, then he'll have the strength to kill Jacob.
Duncan: We're just turning the gathering into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Connor: Maybe, but it's the only way to keep the prize away from an evil immortal. I'm sorry Duncan, but there is no other way.
.
Duncan had always wondered who would win if he and Connor were ever forced to fight. This wasn't a completely fair fight, Connor was wounded, and after losing Rachel, it seemed like Connor wanted to die. Connor clearly didn't want to kill Duncan, but he was willing to do it. Duncan knew he was right. So he took his blade and cut Connor's head off. Connor had given his life to stop Jacob, Duncan vowed that his sacrifice would not be in vain.
