Chapter 375 - The Cure
On the border of the Nation of Frost.
Xavier glanced at the file from Firebringer, which read [Song of Home] by Tylene.
It sounded like the name of a song, and it had the singer's name at the end.
"Is this file some recipe for some kind of alchemy potion or magic spell?"
Xavier couldn't believe that a song could have a healing effect. It was too ridiculous.
Somewhat doubtful, he sent another message to Firebringer. But unfortunately Firebringer's reply confirmed Xavier's suspicions.
"It's not a formula or a spell, it's a song. You'd need ten silver coins to buy it in Norland."
Xavier looked at the messages from Firebringer and put his hands on the virtual keyboard, not knowing what to say.
At that moment, he sensed danger. Xavier instantly closed the magic network interface, drew the long sword he'd been wearing at his waist, and held it in front of him.
In front of Xavier's eyes, sparks flew from the spot where his sword had parried a blade. The attacker was the unconscious soldier, who'd awoken at some point.
Although Xavier had been able to parry the attack with his longsword, his arm was slightly numb.
The soldier's strength had been enhanced by something!
"Knight Rol!"
Xavier knew the soldier who had attacked him. He had spoken to him a few times at severals balls and was a good friend.
He shouted the knight's name, but Rol's spirit was in an extremely unstable state. He was muttering words that Xavier could not understand.
Through the perception of the frost spirit, Xavier clearly sensed … something in this knight that absolutely disgusted him.
Something was not right.
Although the opponent's strength was at an inhuman level, Xavier had his own tricks. The blade he held overflowed with chilly frost, and ice began to form on the knight's feet and arms.
With the help of the frost spirit, Xavier was able to bring his opponent to the ground after several consecutive strikes, using the ice as a shackle to completely limit the rest of his movements.
"Prince Xavier!"
The mages around him, who were still conscious, tried to come to his aid. But they were stopped by several other knights who also showed the same symptoms as Rol just now.
They had gone from a fearful to a frenzied state. They drew their longswords and started to attack the mages who were still conscious.
Something was wrong … Xavier watched as the situation around him gradually turned into a chaotic battlefield.
The frost spirit was warning him of some dangerous 'entity' moving around, something that was affecting the soldiers. The ice dragon's roar had only been the beginning.
Xavier smelled a conspiracy, but there was no time for him to think about it.
If the knights' rampage was not brought under control as soon as possible, his army would die at the hands of fellow comrades before they ever set foot on the battlefield in the Demon Realm.
No legion commander could tolerate this.
He really, really hoped that this would work …
Xavier had no choice. Even if Firebringer was playing a joke on him, it was his last hope.
Xavier clicked to receive the file.
It took less than three seconds for the file called "Song of Home" to be downloaded onto Xavier's magic network terminal.
He immediately clicked on the audio file.
It really was a song … it sounded like it was sung in an old Elvish language.
But the ringing in his ears began to subside as he listened to the singer's soothing, ethereal voice.
It was really working!
Xavier was so impressed that he immediately activated another 'ability' he had learnt yesterday. It was the ability to emit the sound of the magic network to his nearby surroundings.
A special 'inscription' appeared on his magic network, and soon the Song of Home echoed through the canyon that was about to be turned into a battlefield.
Some of the knights with more willpower threw their swords aside and sat down, clutching their heads in pain.
The song was bringing the knights to their senses, but it was not enough.
As the frost elf song began to play, the sense of incongruity and dissonance became clearer to Xavier in the scene surrounding him.
Where! Where was that thing!
An ice-blue inscription appeared in Xavier's hand, and a chill that was strong enough to freeze everything gathered as it activated.
The cold had managed to freeze an unknown creature. As Xavier ran in that direction to find out what it was, a harsh cry cut through the canyon.
The frozen creature shattered and fell to the ground.
Had it killed itself?
As Xavier walked over to the frozen remnants of the creature, he saw that its flesh and blood had become hazy. As he reached out to wipe away the snow that covered it … he felt traces of magic in the ice beneath.
Someone had inscribed a magical circle here.
A palpitating sensation filled Xavier's heart and he looked up at the cliffs above him.
It was no accident that his army had been attacked by an ice dragon. It was as if it had all been planned.
Someone had inscribed an unknown magical circle at the bottom of the canyon in advance. The effect of the array was to send his own soldiers into a rampage.
Many questions lingered in Xavier's mind, but the fallen knights were coming to their senses.
"Prince Xavier, did you save me?" The first thing the knight saw when he sluggishly opened his eyes was the grey-haired, grey-eyed prince.
"That's right! If His Highness hadn't foiled the enemy's plot, you'd all be dead here! Come on, get up!"
The soldiers, who were gradually regaining consciousness, put away their weapons and paid the highest respects to Xavier.
"I can't imagine what I've just done!"
"Thank you, Your Highness!"
All at once, everyone in the army seemed to think that Prince Xavier had saved them from the crisis.
As he listened to the words of gratitude from all around him, Xavier was relieved and grateful.
But he knew full well that the honour did not belong to him …
He opened the magic network and immediately sent a new message to Firebringer.
"I can't believe that song really healed my friend. Thank you so much for your help, I will definitely return the favour when I get the chance."
After typing this message, Prince Xavier felt it was a little stiff and added an emoji of an owl's head with a heart-shaped expression.
"We'll talk about returning favours later. First, do you want to know the cause behind your friend's illness?"
Firebringer replied quickly. When Xavier saw the message, he put away his smile and became serious again.
"Of course I do!"
