Chapter 381 - Birth of the Frost Queen
The sound of a screech, a screech capable of piercing eardrums, spread outwards throughout the room with Xavier at its centre.
Before turning on the audio, Xavier had heeded the kind reminder from Firebringer and directly adjusted the external volume of the magic network to the maximum.
The sound rune attached to the magic network absorbed Xavier's magic power, completely releasing the audio for all to hear.
A banshee's wail?
As soon as he heard the sound, Xavier understood what the ear-splitting sound was.
Only a banshee, a being who had been turned into an undead, could make such a terrible sound.
The "cheat code" given to her by Firebringer soon took effect. The cataclysmic wail caused the tentacle that bound Xavier's wrist to instantly disappear.
The first thing she did when she regained control of her hand was to clasp her ears.
It worked! And it was working like a charm!
The frost spirit had stopped attacking. Xavier saw the eight generals in the hall, disguised as inquisitors, fall to the ground with their hands covering their heads.
Their faces had expressions of agony, and their transformed appearances could not be maintained. With the grey mist, they changed back into their original forms.
"No, this is not the sound I should be hearing!"
Three of the inquisitors had already lost control. They grabbed a sharp dagger to pierce their eardrums, but it seemed to have no effect at all.
They were still covering their foreheads as they collapsed to the ground, their expressions gradually becoming contorted.
The banshee's wail was dangerous, but it couldn't have done that much damage in a short time for a human being.
Maybe these guys weren't human in the first place.
Xavier didn't want to think any further about it. Her heart was already filled with anger, anger originating both from her as a person and her as a prince of the Nation of Frost.
The Holy Church had done something that Xavier could not forgive.
Enraged, Xavier raised her longsword and drove it through the chest of the nearest inquisitor.
Blood gushed from the inquisitor's chest, staining the blade of Xavier's sword.
Xavier pulled out her blade. Blue runes circled around her body before a large number of ice picks spawned in mid-air that stabbed another inquisitor.
The inquisitors, affected by the Banshee's wail, had gone berserk. But their resistance was as uncontrolled as the rage of a wild beast on the verge of death.
At the price of a scratch on her left sword arm, Xavier and the frost spirit killed all of the five remaining inquisitors.
A large amount of blood splattered on the walls of the hall to form a terrifying picture as Xavier's blade pulled out of the chest of the seventh inquisitor she'd just killed.
Hot blood pumped out from the fallen corpse and began to spread across the floor.
The eighth inquisitor, the one disguised as Marshal Amter, still managed to maintain his disguise as the marshal. He was preparing to flee as he was closest to the door.
But the blood flowing on the ground became a deadly trap. When he stepped on the puddle of blood, the frost began to spread from the soles of his feet, turning him into an ice sculpture by the time he realised what was going on.
Xavier stepped over the frozen corpse and slowly walked towards the cleric who had backed into a corner.
"Demon ... you despicable demon!" The cleric looked on in horror at the prince, who was covered in blood.
"That's not the right word." A large number of magical runes appeared around Xavier as the temperature in the hall dropped again. "You should have said 'you despicable missionary'."
Without giving her opponent any chance to retort, Xavier cast her frost magic and turned the cleric into another ice sculpture.
After the deed was done, Xavier took a few steps back and collapsed to the ground, losing her strength.
The prince of the Nation of Frost looked around her.
The meeting hall of the fortress was covered in blood, and the smell of blood was strong on both the walls and the floor.
This was a sight that should only be seen in the event that the fortress was breached.
What should she do now? This question came to Xavier's mind.
The eight generals were the equivalent of the highest rulers of the fortress. As they had been replaced by the Inquisitors, they might already have been killed a long time ago.
The whole fortress had long been ruled by the Holy Church.
Worse still, the same situation could apply to the Nation of Frost at large. Xavier had no idea how many of her country's great nobles had been replaced by inquisitors. Worse still, perhaps even the King could have been replaced …
It no longer seemed that she could trust anyone in the Nation of Frost.
This thought rose up in Xavier's mind. Just as a cold and helpless feeling of despair overtook Xavier, she suddenly saw a message with an update from Firebringer.
At this moment, Xavier was so happy that she was about to cry. She didn't understand where this emotion came from. But it was like walking through a blizzard, depleted of energy, before suddenly seeing the light of a torch in the distance.
Xavier immediately clicked on Firebringer's message.
"How are your friends responding? Did they believe you?"
She wasn't very happy to remember what had happened. Her left hand had been wounded and even though the freezing had temporarily stopped the bleeding, she was still unable to move it.
She raised her right hand to give Firebringer a reply.
"No, my friends were all inquisitors in disguise ..."
Xavier followed this message with an emoji of an owl holding its head and crying.
Firebringer replied with an '…', followed by an emoji of an owl's forehead being stroked.
Xavier had never seen this emoji in the owl emoji pack.
"Maybe you can go and make some new friends."
"But what if all those new friends are inquisitors in disguise as well?" Xavier asked.
"Well … I'd kill them all. I'll kill one if I find one, until all those inquisitors disappear, or the Nation of the Holy Church is destroyed."
Xavier read the new message from Firebringer and felt something stirring inside her.
She didn't want to start a war with the Holy Church. But this time the Holy Church had really committed an atrocity. She would never allow those inquisitors on her territory again.
Since those Holy Church people didn't know how to back off, Prince Xavier had to teach them a lesson in blood, instead of wailing in despair alone.
"Your Highness!"
At that moment, a voice came from outside the door and a two-metre tall man pushed it open. He was slightly shocked at the sight of the meeting room, but smiled with delight at the sight of Xavier sitting in the hall.
"Marshal Amter? No…" Xavier played the "cheat code" sent by Firebringer once more.
Xavier was completely relieved that the voice was only unpleasant to his ears and he did not show signs of madness. He was still alive!
"Your Highness, I have come to warn you of a mutiny in the fortress and the possibility of demon spies in the fortress! I was put in a dungeon by a group of men while I was resting, but they underestimated our southern physique."
Marshal Amter walked into the hall, looked at the blood-stained hall, and then at the ice sculpture not far away, one that looked exactly like himself.
"Marshal Amter, I regret to inform you that it was not the demons who threw you into the dungeon, but the Nation of the Holy Church."
Xavier stood up and walked slowly over to where the leader of the fortress was supposed to sit. After a moment's silence, took that seat.
"Our country is threatened not only by the demons, but by the Holy Church."
"The Holy Church?"
Marshal Amter seemed to have seen something unusual in the statues and the bodies on the ground.
"Perhaps, it's not the demons outside the fortress that we should draw our swords against." Xavier clenched the hilt of the longsword in her hand, and her cheeks stained with blood were as cold as frost. "We should clean up those traitors from the Nation of the Holy Church instead."
