Author's Note: Hello, my wonderful waffles! I understand it has been a while since I've been on here. Allow me to explain…
For those of you who don't know or remember, I got married in November! Ever since then, my life has had no room for writing! My marriage, my family, my work, my friends, my other hobbies… they've all taken priority!
What can I say? That's life.
Despite all this, I've felt the mood to write a cute little one shot that's in the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time universe. Because I've purchased an N64 and I found my old OOT cartridge that I received for Christmas back in 1998. Ah, good times…
Anyway, enough banter. I hope you enjoy the story!
Young Link walked steadily on the bridge leading to his home in Kokiri Forest. A mischievous grin creeping on his face as he thought about what he was about to do. In one hand, he held the Spooky Mask which he had borrowed from the Happy Mask Shop. The mask was somber and had a wooden feel, but everyone he had shown it to, got the pants scared off them. It made him think of a somewhat mean way to get back at a certain someone…
"Link, what are you up to?" Navi questioned.
"Hehehe." Link snickered, "I'm going to scare Mido with this…"
"What? Seriously? He's gonna get really mad Link." Navi cautioned, "Is this really a good idea?"
"It'll be fine!" Link assured his companion, "I've successfully ran away from Mido so many times in the past. I'm an expert! It'll be okay! Just a little bit of fun revenge."
"I understand, I just hope you know what you're doing." Navi explained, "He's always been kind of a jerk. What will Saria think of this?"
Link paused for a moment, Saria was such a kind person. As much as she disliked Mido she probably wouldn't approve of what Link was planning. In the past she would always be satisfied with simply telling him off. It made him doubt himself for a moment… but he shrugged it off quickly.
"She doesn't have to know!" Link chirped, "If she asks I'll just…uh… get rid of the mask and pretend to know nothing about it!"
Navi sighed and resigned to the situation.
The sun had just begun to set, causing the sky to turn a beautiful golden-orange color. That made it even better in his eyes, after all, the forest can get pretty dark very quickly…
Link entered the forest with a smile on his face, seeing everything as calm as it should be made him happy. He also chuckled as he realized that would make his mask even scarier.
"Hi Link!" A voice from the side greeted him. Tido the unofficial 'gatekeeper' of the village approached Link, waving happily.
Link put a finger up while going, "Shhh… I don't want Mido to know I'm here." He whispered.
Tido looked around and whispered back, "Why? What happened?"
Link took the mask out from under his shield and put it on to show it off.
"Whoa, that thing is really scary! What are you… Ahh, I get it. I bet you're going to scare Mido with that aren't you?" He smirked.
"Mmm-Hm!" Link nodded, "Do you know where he is?"
"I don't know, let's go look!" Tido declared.
They only took a few steps forward before the hero was greeted once again.
"Link! You're back again!" This time it was a blonde kokiri girl named Sola.
Both Link and Tido went "Shhhhhh!" simultaneously, confusing Sola.
"What is it?" She whispered.
Tido explained quietly, "Link got this really scary mask and he's going to scare Mido with it!"
Sola's eyes widened, "What? Really?"
Link put on the mask again to show her, she took a step back, "Wow, that is so scary…"
Another Kokiri by the name of Reso passed by and noticed the mask. He approached enthusiastically, "Whoa Link! That is so creepy! Where did you get that?"
Tido explained, "Hey Reso! Link is going to scare Mido! Do you know where he is?"
"What? Oh, that is so great! Last I saw he was going into the Kokiri Forest shop!"
"Thanks!" Link nodded.
"Can I come?" Reso asked eagerly, "I want to see Mido scared! This'll be payback for making me pick all the grass in front of Saria's house and taking all the credit for it!"
"Sure!" Link agreed, "Let's get going! I can ambush him as he walks out of the shop. I hope he's still there!"
Navi got close to Link's ear and whispered, "Hey Link, I thought this was something you were just doing for yourself…"
Link shook his head, "It's all good Navi, it'll be fun with more of us! Besides, think of everything that Mido has done. He needs to be knocked down a peg."
"I have a really bad feeling about this Link… let's just call the whole thing off and get out of here."
"No way!" Link objected, "I don't want to back down now, I'll look like a coward! Look, there's the shop. It'll be really quick!"
"Let's hide behind these bushes!" Tido directed. Once concealed, the group looked at the shop like a team of spies.
"What now?" Reso asked.
"I can't tell if he's still in there." Link mumbled, "One of you, go out and check!"
All of the boys turned to Sola, who sighed and said, "Oh okay…" She stood and began walking toward the shop, doing her best to look casual. The boys watched her peer into the shop, and then give the peace symbol in their direction while smiling. She carefully made her way back to the hiding spot.
"He's still there." She affirmed, "He's at the counter talking with the shopkeeper."
Link's heart began to pound in his chest, he took a deep breath.
"Are you okay Link?" Tido asked, putting a supportive hand on his shoulder.
Link took another deep breath, "Yeah, I'm okay. Let's do this!"
The moment of truth had arrived, and a lot faster than Link had realized. He wasn't sure if he was ready or not but he was going through with it.
"Okay, here I go!" Link spoke up.
With the mask adorned, he got to his feet and went to go stand at the edge of the shop entrance, just out of sight to anyone who may have been inside.
"This is going to be great! Yes!" Reso raved. Excitement bubbling within him.
"I know! Shhh! Let's watch!" Tido replied.
Before Link could fully mentally prepare, Mido had walked out of the shop and stepped into the grass. Link pumped himself up for a second before approaching the Kokiri bully. Just as he was about to get within arm's reach, he had stepped on a twig which produced a loud snap.
Mido turned around to see what the noise was and found himself face-to-face with the masked Link. For a moment, Link felt terrified as he assumed Mido could probably see right through his disguise. In that instant, Mido's eyes widened with terror and he let out a yell of horror,
"Waaaaaaaaahhh!"
Link threw his arms up in shock but didn't make a single sound.
"It's a monster! Get away! Don't come any closer!" Mido put up the Kokiri Shield that he had just purchased in front of him and took a few hasty steps backward, unfortunately for him he forgot that the pond was right behind him, and he took a few tumbled steps back and splashed right in, his shield flew upwards and landed on the edge of the water.
Link gasped lightly, the other Kokiri in the bush leapt out, laughing as they ran toward Link.
"You got him, you got him!" Tido enthused.
"Hahaha! That was the best!" Reso laughed, "Good job Link!"
Sola was giggling lightly, "That was pretty funny, is Mido okay?" She looked back at the water.
Mido surfaced at that moment, sputtering water from his mouth. He jerked his head up toward the group and made a confused face, "What…?"
Slowly, Link took off the mask and smiled awkwardly, "Heheh… got you."
Mido's face twisted in shock and anger, "Y-You! You!"
"That was the best!" Reso stirred, "Link got you good Mido! After all those years of you picking on him so much he got you back!"
Tido nodded with a smirk but didn't say anything.
Mido noticed his cap floating in the water next to him and snatched it up. He then turned to the group angrily.
"I wasn't scared!" Mido barked, "That mask is just the stupidest thing I've ever seen!" He hastily climbed out of the water. Once back on his feet he began to roughly wring the water out of his hat.
Sola rolled her eyes, "You were totally scared Mido, plain and simple."
Mido's face turned red, "Oh, you are so dead Mr No Fairy!" furiously throwing his hat onto the grass, he began to stomp aggressively toward the group, cracking his knuckles.
"Hey, you can't call him that anymore!" Tido protested. Link, Reso, and Sola began to take steps backward.
With an irate Mido getting closer, the group scattered and broke into a run going different directions, Link used the cover of the approaching night and disappeared into the shadows of the trees. Spotting the exit, he ran out of the forest, across the bridge and into the never-ending Hyrule Field.
Link sprinted with so sign of slowing down until he got to the brick wall that stood near Lon Lon Ranch. With a mighty leap he got himself hoisted on top of the wall and laid flat on his back, facing the beautiful orange-blue tinted sky.
He took fast breaths with one arm above his head. His chest heaving as he caught his breath.
Navi caught up to Link and looked down at him while he rested.
"I'm not sure what to say about all that." Navi stated, "That was pretty funny. I'm still going to worry about you."
Suddenly, as if it all came out flooding like a blocked up river released from the confines of a dam, Link began to laugh loudly.
"That was AWESOME! Hahaha! That was the best ever!"
"Everything he did to me! KARMA!" Link began to roll around in laughter.
"Link be careful don't-!" Navi tried to warn him, but it was too late. Link had rolled right off the wall and fell right onto the grass.
"Oof!" Link grunted.
Navi flew close, "Are you okay Link?"
"I'm fine." Link affirmed, having some residue giggles.
"You sure? That was quite a drop."
Link got to his feet, "I'm okay! See?" He brushed himself off.
Navi glanced back toward the forest, "Do you think everyone else will be okay?"
Link also turned to the forest, then to Navi, "I'm sure they'll be fine. Mido never really picked on them as much as he picked on me. If anything, he'll probably be avoiding them for a bit."
"I hope you're right." Navi replied before suddenly becoming real quiet, "Hm? Shh…"
"What is it?" Link whispered.
Faintly, then growing in volume, Saria's song carried peacefully on the wind. Link's ocarina began to glow a soft green.
"It's Saria!" Navi exclaimed, "She wants to talk to you."
Link's heart skipped a beat and he felt a knot in his stomach. After taking a deep breath he spoke, "Okay, let me talk to her."
Through the Ocarina's magic, Saria's voice emitted clearly, "Link? It's Saria, can you hear me?"
"Yeah, I can hear you." Link answered nervously, "What's up Saria?"
"Link… what happened just now?" Saria asked.
Link felt his face grow hot, "Wh…what do you mean?"
"As I came out of the Lost Woods, I saw you and a couple of others running so fast."
Link felt his heart starting to race.
"Then I saw Mido, he looked so furious… and he was all wet. What happened Link?"
Link looked at Navi, either asking for intervention or for just any kind of assistance. Navi just stared back at him with a shrug.
"I… I don't know what happened Saria." Link spoke timidly feeling the knot in his stomach tighten further.
"Come on Link, you can tell me what happened." Saria encouraged softly.
Link sighed, not wanting to lie to his best friend anymore, he explained everything that happened.
"Oh brother." Saria replied, "A silly prank huh?"
Link felt relief upon not hearing any anger in her voice but he responded, "I know that was an awful thing to do I just…"
"He'll be fine." Saria assured him, "He's done some terrible things to you for so long. That what you did wasn't a big deal. You probably should avoid him for a while though." She giggled lightly.
"I can do that." Link agreed, and the two shared a pleasant laugh.
"You should come visit me in the Sacred Meadow sometime." Saria suggested, "I would love to see you again."
Link was happy to hear that, "I will, soon."
"That's great! I'll talk to you later okay?"
"Okay Saria, see you soon. Bye."
The green glow of the Ocarina faded as the magic dissipated.
"Well, she's not mad at you." Navi stated.
Link nodded with a smile, "I know, I'm so glad."
Navi observed their surroundings and noticed the field was now quite dark.
"We should get out of here before the Stalchilds find us." The forest fairy suggested.
"Yeah, let's get to Kakariko Village." Link answered, "It's safer there."
With a brisk pace, the two began to follow the dirt trail to the small village.
"That wasn't so bad after all!" Link enthused, he began to skip with joy.
Navi agreed, "Saria's always been so nice. I can sense that she feels some regret missing the action."
"Heh, maybe." Link replied, "I don't know. She's always stood up to Mido when he would be mean to me. But I didn't know if she would like what I was doing."
At the steps leading to Kakariko Village, Link stopped and gazed at the Spooky Mask, which was now softly lit with an ominous glow. Link felt a small shiver down his spine.
"Hey Link!" Navi called from the top of the steps, "Come on, let's go!"
"Coming!" Link called back, and he hurried up the steps. Side by side, the two companions entered the ancient village.
Author's Note: I hope I haven't lost my touch too much... I'll probably be gone for a long time now. Hopefully I'll return again soon!
See you all later!
