It's been two weeks since Ellen showed up at their door. And Adam still hasn't spoken to her. Fixing one relationship at a time was all her could do. They had decided to invite Adams sister and nephew over for dinner. Kim had yet to meet them and Adam was important to her so she would make an effort to have a good relationship with them. Kim decided to make dinner and dessert for everyone. She had the day off but was always in call, crime didn't take a day off and it was impossible to know when they would get called in. Luckily it hadn't happened too often since Kim and Adam had been together. Kate and Sammy arrived at 5, dinner was to be served at 6. Adam answered the door while Kim got Jackson. She held him on her hip while their company arrived and kept Champ by her side.

"Kate and Sammy this is my girlfriend Kim, our son Jackson and our dog Champ. Kim and Jackson this my sister Kate and my nephew Sammy." Adam introduces everyone Kim is the first to extend her hand to shake hands. "It's lovely to meet you two. Welcome to our home. Hope y'all are hungry we are having lasagna and salad for dinner and a lemon ricotta cake for dessert." Kim was trying to be warm and open even though she was nervous about this meeting today. "Kim it's nice to finally meet you. Dad has mentioned you a few times but I don't talk to Adam enough to get the details." Kate had to hear about the relationship from her dad. She was annoyed but she is a busy single mom and Adams busy too so it happens. "Boys to guys want to outside and play for a bit while the grown ups talk? Champ you want to go outside?" The boys ran outside to play while Kim got beers for Adam and Kate.

"So Adam how did you two meet? It seems like your a bit opposite? Your worlds are very different." Kate wanted to figure out how they work since she hasn't seen them together before. "We met at a cafe in Philly back in May when she was in town for a weekend getaway and I was in town for a game. I saw her and knew right away I needed to talk to her. So I asked to sit next her and we talked and hit it off right away. After my road trip we started to date. Yes are worlds are different but neither of us care. I didn't let money change me and I'm used to Kim's job because of pops so it's fine." Adam gushed about meeting Kim. He loved to talk about it. It was a great day. "Wait what do you mean because of dads job?" Kate was confused. "Did your dad not mention I'm a cop, a detective actually. That seems like something he would have mentioned." Kim was amused by that. "No he didn't. He just mentioned your a single mom and that you moved in pretty quickly. He was concerned about that." Kate tried not to offend Kim. Adam started to laugh but not in a good way. "Really? Unlike him who has used me to bail him out of debt more times than I can count? Or the fact that he got all of us being threatened by bookies and their thugs? You mean the fact that Kim still works full time and hasn't taken a dime from me makes her a threat? Yeah okay." Adam was so frustrated. His dad wasn't even trying to make things work with Kim. "Look your dad hates who I work for, so that means I'm a bad person. Dinners almost ready I'm going to get the table set and get the food on the table while you both finish this conversation." Kim went back inside after that. It was hard to hear.

While Kim was getting dinner finished up Adam stayed outside with Kate. "Kids head inside to wash up for dinner." Once they were inside "Kate look pops hates Kim just based off who she works for. It's not fair to her. She's worked too hard to get where she is. And she gave up a lot to be with me. She almost lost her job when the tabloids posted a photo of us together. Her job consisted of being undercover as dealers, buyers, junkies. That can't happen with her face and name in the papers. I have never been happier. They are my life! Give her a chance you will like her. I promise." Kate just shook her head. They went inside to join the rest for dinner.

Once dinner was served conversation flowed and Kate really did give Kim a chance. They all noticed that the boys got along really well and were hoping they could hang out again soon. Right before dessert was served Kim's phone rang, she sighed when she saw who was calling. "Hey boss. What's going on? Kim asked knowing what it was. "Sorry to ruin your night but he caught a huge case and I need all hands on deck. We have 1 dead, 1 over dose and 3 missing college students. All female and all friends. The one who over dosed had 30 balloons of coke in her stomach. We are needed at the crime scene. I'm sorry." Voight knew they had this dinner planned so he did feel bad. "Boss it's okay. This is huge and that's a lot of coke and with three missing I know I'm needed. Let me get my stuff together and I will be there in 20. Send me the address." She sighed but understood. "Thanks see you soon" he hung up after that. "I'm sorry but I have to go in. It's super ugly and it's going to be a very long case. Baby please behave for daddy. I love you and will call before bed time." Kim started her good byes. "Love you too mommy!" Jackson was sad to see her go but mostly understood. "Babe I'm so sorry! I will touch base when I can. I love you so much." Kim hugged Adam. "It was nice meeting you both. Hopefully we can do it again soon. I have to grab my stuff before I head out." Kim headed towards the bedroom to grab her weapons. Adam followed her wanting a few moments alone with her before she left. "Darling I love you too. Please come here for a moment. I just need to feel you before you go." Adam held her close and kissed her long and slow. When they broke apart she grabbed both guns, her carbon knife, her cuffs, radio and badge. "Good night everyone. See you soon. Love you all!" With that she left.

Kim arrived at the scene armed and ready to work. Voight had all the teams split up to search the scene. It was difficult to see this scene. The way the body was cut open, the way the body was disrespected. Kim knew she just needed to focus on finding evidence but it was not an easy task. After an hour processing the scene they headed back to the district. The whole team sat to watch pod footage trying to find out who did this and maybe where the other 3 girls were taken too. The living victim was still unconscious so this was the only way to get a lead at this point. Kim took a moment to call home and say good night to Jackson. "Hey baby! How's the night going?" Kim wanted to talk to Adam as well. "Darling it's good to hear from you. How's the case going?" Adam was concerned, she sounded stressed. "It's going slow. It was pretty gruesome. Waiting for the living victim to regain consciousness. Been going over pod footage. It's been exhausting already. I just need you and our son make me feel better. Can I talk to him?" Adam handed the phone to Jackson. "Hi momma. I miss you!" Jackson just about yelled into the phone. "I miss you too baby boy. I hope you sleep well tonight. Remember I love you!" Kim loved talking to her son. "Love you too. Night mommy" Jackson yawned before laying down and closing his eyes to go to sleep. "Kim how about tomorrow before I drop Jackson off at Nadia's we stop by for a visit? Bring some bagels and coffee? How does that sound?" Adam wanted to see her and try to bring her some peace. "Sounds lovely! Thank you. I have to go. But I love you. See you tomorrow." Kim sighed. "Love you too darling." Adam hung his head when the call ended. He was worried about her and this case but that was the job.

The team worked through the night finding the other stash house where the girls were located. It was ugly. One dead, cut open for the drugs, one over dosing and one crying uncontrollably. Kim and Erin followed the ambo to the hospital to try to get information out of these girls. Though both girls went into emergency surgery to get the balloons out of their stomachs. The first girl who had over dosed was finally awake and ready to talk to they headed to her room while they waited. "Good evening I'm Detective Lindsey and this is Detective Burgess. We need to ask you some questions about the drugs we found in your system. We found 30 balloons of Coke in your system. We have also found 2 of your friends dead cut open for the drugs, 1 friend mid over dose and 1 crying. The last two are in surgery right now. So you need to tell who put you up to this because you are going to jail. It's up to on his long." Lindsey laid into the girl. Not feeling sorry for her at all. Crying the girl responds "I can't tell you, he's my boyfriend. I love him." Kim scoffs and Lindsey rolls her eyes. "Well he doesn't love you. If he did he would never ask you to do this. A real man would never ask you do something illegal in the name of love. You need to tell us so we can protect you and your friends." Kim didn't have time for this. "Listen I know how this goes. When I was 14 I was living mostly on the street, my mom checked out and my dad was in jail. I met an older man who took me in. I thought I was lucky. The heat was on, he had running water and food on the table. I was loyal to him. I didn't understand that I needed to pay him for this. So I had to sell drugs for him and I when I refused to sell he would make me have sex with him, in other words rape me. Then when that wasn't enough he made me sell myself on the streets to pay my debts. I got looked on drugs to cover the pain of what I had to do. When I finally got clean I saw him for who he really was. And you can too!" Lindsey tried to reason with her. "His name is Damien Johnson. He said he loved me. I don't want to go to jail." She sobbed. "Unfortunately it will happen but you are cooperating so that will help. If you need anything let us know." They headed back to the district to start the search for Johnson.

"Okay we have a name Damien Johnson. He's the boyfriend who convinced these girls to smuggle drugs for him." Lindsey announced when entering into the bullpen. Everyone started looking for for the suspect. It was fairly late but they were now waiting for an arrest warrant to be signed by the judge. They all decided to head to the bunk out room to nap for a little bit. 7am came and everyone was exhausted still but each took turns washing up and changing clothes. Feeling a bit more human than before. By 8am Adam and Jackson had arrived. "Morning Platt!" Adam greeted her. "Boy wonder and Jackson. What are you guys doing here?" She was happy to see them coming around to hug Jackson. "We came to see mommy and bring breakfast to the team. Can you buzz us up? He showed her the large amounts of coffee and bagels. "Sure come on" Once upstairs "Skinny britches you have visitors." Platt left as Kim turned around. Jackson already running towards her for a hug. "Hey baby. Good morning. I missed you. Did you sleep well?" Kim held him as she spoke and moved towards Adam to give him a kiss. "Yes! I missed you too." Jackson gave you a big hug. "We brought bagels and coffee for everyone. We figured you all could use it." Adam offers as he makes his way to the break room. A collective thank you rang out. They enjoyed some breakfast before the warrant came in. Once it did they all got ready to head out. Not knowing if he would be alone or armed.

They arrived at the house ready to head in with bulletproof vests on just in case. You never know and it's better to be safe than sorry. Rixton, Dawson and Voight took the front. Halstead, Lindsey and Burgess took the back in case he ran. They knocked and announced who they were "Damien Johnson open up its the CPD!" Shots rang out through the front door. So they entered the back door guns drawn ready to fire. They moved quietly but quickly. They heard the front door being kicked in, shouting rang out next as the suspect ran and other men starting running through the house. The team tasking off in different directions to stop them from leaving. Kim noticed at least one had a gun and called it over the radio. She followed slowly up the stairs, Dawson behind her. They find him trapped in a room with lots of drugs, she heard her team members capture the other three suspects. This was the last one. "Put your hands up. You are under arrest. Don't make this harder than it has to be. Just put the gun down. We can walk out of here." Kim spoke calmly. Her radio turned on so the whole team could hear. Dawson also had his weapon drawn at the suspect but let her talk. "You don't need to do this. We can all walk out of here alive. I know we all want that. So let's put the gun down." He wasn't talking. She didn't even know who he was, other than he ran and had a gun pointed at her. Next thing she knew he pulled the trigger and so did she. Hers hitting him square in the chest and his hitting Dawson in the vest. Kim called for an ambo before removing the weapon from the suspect and checking for a pulse. He didn't have one but as she turned she noticed Jay assessing Dawson. The vest held the bullet. He was okay. She went with him to the ER to get checked out, he was fine. Just a nasty bruise. But Kim needed to be interviewed at the district.

"Detective Burgess. Can you explain what happened at the scene?" Commander Crowley asked her. "I could but it's all recorded. I had the radio tuned in the whole time. From the moment I entered the room and saw a gun pointed at me. Just listen to it. You can have my weapon and I will write up my report but just listen to the recording." Kim pleaded. She wanted it done. She would already have to relive it to write up the report. It was too much right now. "Fine but if we have questions you will need to come back in." Crowley allowed Kim to leave. Back in the bullpen the team worked to get a confession as way as DNA to see if it linked to in solved cases. So far the John Doe Kim snot had other cases that his DNA popped on that helped get some closure for people. They still waited on the other three who weren't talking. Kim wrote up her statement while zoning in and out. Her mind spinning. Antonio really could have been hurt bad today, could she have done something different? What if he had died, or even just required surgery? Then what? He got shot because of her right? Her mind was spinning. After she finished her report Voight sent her home. She needed to clear her head but she headed to Molly's.

Once at Molly's she sat alone in a corner booth drowning in booze. Severide noticed and called Erin. "Hey are you working right now?" He asked. "Yes Kelly what's up?" Erin was hoping it wasn't another case. "Kim's here at Molly's drunk! I figured I would call you." Kelly knew this was bad. "OMG I'm coming! Don't let her leave!" Erin yelled as she hung up. "Guys Kim is wasted at Molly's! I have to go get her and take her home." Erin didn't wait for an agreement she just left. Once she got there Kelly pointed to the back. She had been crying. "Kim what's going on? Why are you crying?" Erin was being gentle knowing yelling wasn't good. "He could have died, because of me. I didn't do my job." Kim started while throwing back another shot. Erin took away the booze "Kim you did everything right. This is the job. It happens. You can't blame yourself because some nut fired on you guys. Come on let's get you home. We can talk when your sober again." Erin guided her to the car. She didn't know how they let Kim do this. They know not to. That's a problem for another day.

Erin pulled up outside Kim's place and helped her to the door and knocked. Adam opened it "what the hell happened? How did this happen?" Adam was furious. At who he didn't know but this was bad. He noticed she didn't drink, except for their first date. He never asked but assumed it was because she was sober. Why he didn't know. He didn't care either way. He still loved her. "It was a bad case. She killed a suspect after that suspect shot Dawson. He's fine but she's spinning worse case senecio right now. Go easy on her." Erin left. Adam could handle it. "Darling let's get you to bed okay?" Adam guided her to the bedroom. She was mainly dead weight. "I'm so sorry. I didn't want you to see me like this. 4 years down the drain." Kim started to cry again. Adam just settled her on the bed and then held her close. "It's okay. Tomorrow we start again. It's just a small slip up. It's going to be okay. I still love you." Adam talked softly to her. Shushing her tears. Trying to calm her. "Why? He could have died because of me. Someone died at my hands today. How can you love me?" This was her fears coming out now. Could someone love her even after taking a persons life? "Darling it was him or you or Dawson. Im glad you chose him. He shot at you and your partner. You did the right thing. And I know Dawson doesn't blame you. But for now let's get you in some jammies and then sleep this off." Kim shook her head and took the Advil and water offered. Then laid down with Adams arms wrapped around her.

The next morning Adam got Jackson off to Nadia's house. He saw his mom briefly but Adam said she was ill and he needed to be quiet not to wake her. When he got home he made some coffee and some breakfast hoping she could eat something. He didn't know how she acted after a night of drinking because he never saw this before. He knew they had a lot to talk about but for now he just wanted her to feel better. "Darling. Can you sit up and eat something? Please?" Kim opened her eyes, they were blood shot. She slowly sat up but closed her eyes again. Adam took the hint and closed the blinds. He offered more Advil and more water which she took. "I'm so sorry Adam. I just couldn't look at you knowing what I had done. Knowing you might hate me after. I also could have protect Dawson better you know. I messed up." Kim cried and Adam just held her. He moved her breakfast to the floor and pulled her into his chest. "I told you last night but I will say it again. This is your job and I love you no matter what. Dawson doesn't blame you for what happened. It's the job. So today you are off from work, I already called it in. You are going to eat. Then I will help you shower. Then off to a meeting and maybe even therapy. We start over again today. And maybe after you can tell me how or why your sober." Adam knew he was being forceful but she obviously needed to get back on track and last night was a big slip up. He would stand by her because he loved her but it knew it would be hard for them both. For him to hear her talk about it and for her to talk about it. But she agreed and ate the offered breakfast slowly. She was definitely hungover this morning. After the shower they headed to a meeting. It was Adams first time ever going to one. He didn't know what to expect. But Kim was prepared with tissues.

At the meeting they sat in a circle, about 15 chairs in a church basement. Kim was shaking, it was like withdrawals all over again. Except she wasn't in college this time. When she was drinking as a cop it was never as bad except for the night Jackson was conceived. She was also nervous. This was never fun. "You don't have to speak today Kim. Just listen, remember why you got sober before. I know you can't tell these people why you slipped last night. I know it's part of the job that creates problems with the public. But I'm here." Adam could feel the nervous. He took his jacket off and put it around her shoulders to help hide the shakes. She just nodded and squeezed his hand. The meeting started and everyone started to share Kim knew it was the first step like it or not. "Hi I'm Kim B. And I'm an alcoholic. I was clean for over 4 years before I slipped last night. Something classified at my job went wrong and I was spinning. Instead of asking for help I chose to drink. I'm truly sorry for drinking and want to get help so doesn't happen again."

"Do you still have a therapist Kim or do we need to find a new one? I think it would help for a bit again." Adam had watched her the whole meeting and was amazed at how strong she was, how strong they all were to talk so openly about their struggles. "I haven't been in therapy for years. Let's get some coffee and we can talk some more about it Okay?" Adam just nodded and took her hand.
