It was now the middle of December. The house was fully decorated inside and outside. Adam never did much for the holidays but with Kim and Jackson here he went all out. He wanted the first Christmas together to be special, one they would never forget. The house looked like Christmas had thrown up. Decorations everywhere. It looked amazing and over the top but that Adam. Kim had finished all the shopping for biological family and had shipped them out east all ready. One less thing to worry about. What Kim didn't know was that Adam had been out finding the perfect ring for her. While having to have it made it finally got what he was looking for in a 2 carat princess cut diamond in a halo of diamonds, the platinum band had diamonds inset all around the band. It was perfect and sparkly. He loved it and knew she would too. It wasn't as flashy as he wanted but he knew that wouldn't be her thing. Today Adam was picking up the ring along with other gifts for Kim while she was working. Kevin was with him to hide the presents so Kim wouldn't be temped to open them before hand.
Kim on the other hand was listening to Voight going on and on about a gang banger named "shorty". The most used name in the gang data base. Something about pod footage was being said when she suddenly felt like she was going to vomit. She quickly left the bullpen heading for the bathroom hoping she made it in time. Throwing up is bad enough but not making it to the bathroom would be worse. Luckily she made it and was washing her mouth out thinking she must have caught the bug going around the district. Several patrol officers had been out with it and even Platt had come down with it. Kim started to feel dizzy, the room spinning. She tried to get to the bench but the room went black.
She's awoken by the sound of Lindsey and Dawson holding her and saying not to move and Halstead calling for an ambo. Kim said that she was cold so Dawson wrapped his jacket around her but reminded her to stay still. They didn't know if she hit anything when she landed. She could have broken something though it didn't look like it but better to be safe. Kim asked for Adam several times and was told they would call him. "Hey Darling! Having a slow day?" Adam was happy to hear from her. "Adam it's Erin. Kim passed out we are taking her to med." Lindsey spoke, she was shaken by this. "OMG is she Okay was she shot?" Adam had no idea what think. Or even what they were doing today. "No we were in the bullpen then she left quickly, moments later we hear a crashing sound in the locker room and she's on the floor. She's in and out of consciousness. But we are taking her in." Lindsey tried to be brief but relay the important info. "Okay I'm on my way. Tell her I love her and will be there soon." Adam hung up. "Kevin I need to take all this to your place. Kim was passed out at work and is headed to med to get checked out." Adam was freaking out. This was something no one had control over. "Yeah man no worries. I hope she's okay. Call me later with the update." Kevin watched him leave, worried for his friend.
When they arrived at Med Will was already waiting for them. He called out immediately to know what happened. He was asking lots of questions that Kim was trying to answer. Some easy, some she had no idea. The moments before she passed out were a blur. Adam arrived at med frantic, Maggie took him back to see Kim knowing that he was the emergency contact and Kim would want to see him. "Darling are you okay? What happened?" He was hugging her tight. Scared but relieved to see her alert now. "I don't know. I felt sick so I went to the bathroom to throw up and I was washing out my mouth when I felt dizzy and then I don't know. I vaguely remember hearing voices asking questions, telling me I was okay and not to move but it's a blur." Kim was so confused about how she ended up here. Why she was sick and dizzy. "Okay baby. Hopefully Will will have some answers soon." Adam let her go but held onto her hand as they waited.
They didn't have to wait long for the nurses to start taking blood and checking vitals. Honestly it was a little much. Will walked in while the nurse was still there to takeover asking questions. He had a thought about what was going on and needed some answers. "Hey guys. So I have to ask some questions based on some of your vitals I think I know what's going on but I need to ask and I need you to be honest" Kim and Adam were both freaking out now. "Could you be pregnant? Your blood sugar is low, you haven't kept food down in two days, your blood pressure is slightly high and your dehydrated." Will asked and explained. He heard a gasp and a breath hitch. Not sure which was which but it seemed neither thought of this possibility. "Um I mean yeah. There is always that chance. I haven't missed a period or anything. But I guess it's possible." Adam hadn't said anything but the low sided grin was large. He was happy that this was a chance. Kim was nervous and scared. But maybe excited too. They hadn't planned this so it was shocking. "Okay let me run a few more tests. But I think that you are. My guess based on what you have told me that you probably are so let's get a urine sample. It will be quick I promise." Will got the sample and left.
Kim hadn't said anything. She had been here before. And though Adam looked thrilled she was scared he would run. "Darling look at me please. I know your scared but I'm not going anywhere. Yes it's earlier than we planned but I have wanted this for months now remember?" Adam was trying to reassure her and not smother her with his excitement. He wanted to shout it from the roof tops but needed to be supportive first. "What about Jackson? What if he's upset? What about my job and yours? Your on the road? I'm scared and maybe excited, definitely nervous and Nauseous." Kim rambled a bit but Adam just hugged her tight. "Jackson will be a great big brother. He's already so wonderful with Grace and Owen. He will be thrilled. It's okay. I'm here. And with my job I will be home as much as I can. It won't change much from how it is now. I promise I will be here for you. I'm not leaving you. I love you." Adam continued as he heard a knock on the door. "Well guys I have the results...congratulations your a month pregnant." Will exclaimed. Adam jumped up hooting and hollering. The waiting room probably knows now. He kissed Kim hard and it even made Will blush. "Um yeah so okay. You will need to check in with your OBGYN for more information and here's a script for some prenatal vitamins. And I also wrote you a script to help with the nausea. If you anything else let know and I will start you discharge papers." Will went over the papers and left. He definitely was needed anymore and Adam was overly excited, Will didn't need to see it.
As they left the hospital they agreed not to tell anyone for 8 more weeks. They would say that Kim needed to change her diet that she passed out from lack of nutrition. A bold lie but it needed to work. At least till they hit the three month mark and it was safe. The agreed to tell one person each only. His would be Kevin and hers would be Erin. Kim had been given the rest of the day to recover before work the next day. Adam drove them home the large wide smile never leaving his face. He couldn't believe how lucky he was to be having another child with Kim. He couldn't wait to hold their baby, to feel it kick, to find out if it's a girl or a boy. He was over the moon. Kim needed reassurance that everything was okay and wasn't leaving. He knew that would take time. He really hated Roman right now. Little prick.
At home Adam helped Kim into bed insisting that she rest. He made her some lunch and made sure she took her medicine before eating to hopefully keep the food down. He made some soup so it wasn't super heavy. "Baby I appreciate all of this but I'm not an invalid. I can take care of myself and I don't have to be on bed rest." Kim begged but he wasn't having it. "Darling let me do this for. Humor me please. I was scared out of my mind when I got the call. And I'm thrilled beyond belief that you and our baby are okay. Just please let me show you how much I care." Now Adams begging. He wanted to shower her in love hoping she would finally get it. He's not leaving. "Okay but only for today. I won't be able to handle this for the next 8 months especially since I did it alone the first time around." Kim gave in slightly. "Darling, Kim that's even more of a reason for me to do this for you. Because you deserve for it to be done right. To have the help and support you need Okay?" She just nodded knowing he was right.
After lunch Adam made her a bath for her to soak in. He figured she would be sore tomorrow after passing out. They still don't know exactly what she hit on the way down so this would help the aches and relax her mind. While he started the bath he texted to Kevin to let him know about the baby and Kevin was thrilled for his friend. Once it was ready Adam helped Kim into the bathroom and helped her undress. She didn't need the help but she indulged him. As she was stepping in she stopped and held on to him, he was concerned. "Come in with me please?" Kim asked. He didn't need her to ask twice, He striped down and slowly got in behind her. She settled up against him while his hands settle on her still flat belly. Caressing her skin, drawing imaginary patterns on the skin. This was relaxing them both. Neither saying a word, neither wanting break this lovely, calm, wonderful moment. They still here till the water turns cool. Enjoying the company and the silence.
Eventually they needed to get out to go pick up Jackson from Nadia's. Normally they would head to the park for a bit but since there is snow on the ground that can't happen anymore. But when the boys got home they decided a snow ball in the back yard was required. Kim watched them running around throwing snowballs laughing as Champ would jump up to bit the snowballs. They were having such a good time while Kim made a healthy dinner for the family. She needed to make sure she was eating better. She needed to make sure she was getting enough vitamins for her and their baby. Hopefully the morning sickness wouldn't be bad this time and she would need to worry as much about her intake but for now she only wants healthy things to eat. She knew the boys would hate it but oh well this was necessary. After dinner the boys had Kim sit on the couch while they cleaned up after dinner. Then they had popcorn and movie time on the couch. They watched the movie till Jackson fell asleep on them. He was carried to bed then Kim and Adam went to their room.
"Kim how are feeling about all this? I afraid we aren't on the same page." Adam was concerned. He was over the moon and she didn't seem to be excited. "Baby I am thrilled just still some residual effects from the last time. You know? The day I found about Jackson my partner left me and suggested I abort him. I just keep trying to convince myself that you won't leave me. Leave us. Other than that I'm excited. I wonder what he or she will look like. If they will have your eyes or your smile. What will there first word be? Will they want to play sports like dad? Or want to be a dancer like I was as a child." Kim looked up and saw Adam smiling wide and bright. She's never seen him smile that bright before. This made all the doubt worth it. Kim leans over towards Adam rubbing her fingers on his stubble while staring into his eyes. Their lips met smiling into the kiss. It was slow, passionate and full of all the promise they both needed. A promise he wasn't leaving and a promise from her that she was excited to be pregnant again with his child. Neither in a rush tonight, they just wanted to savor each other's touch and enjoy the feeling of being in each other's arms.
The next morning Kim made a doctors appointment with Dr. Eli to make sure everything was okay with their baby and progressing smoothly. The first appointment she could get was right before Christmas. Kim couldn't wait to see Adams expression when he see the actual baby on the screen or when he hears the heart beat. It's a magical moment, one that you can never forget. She can still remember the first time she heard Jacksons heart beat, she cried tears of joy. No matter how hard it was going to be being a single mom she was still overwhelmed with joy at the sound. And then the joy of holding your baby for the first time. There are no words to describe it. Seeing a piece of your heart on the outside. It's life altering.
The next weeks go by so slow. Work had been super slow it's like criminals took time off due to the harsh cold weather. It was December so the cold air was to be expected but still the time went by slowly. It also didn't help the time was leading up to their first doctors appointment. The excitement and nervousness of the first appointment was lingering between them. They wanted to know for sure how far along she was and the approximate due date for their bundle of joy. The appointment was set for later today and thankfully Voight thought it was just a follow up from her being in the hospital so no one was the wiser. Adam has texted multiple times to remind her of the appointment not that she could forget. But she loved him even more seeing how excited he was.
They arrived at the appointment a few minutes early to fill out paperwork. The nurse asked them tons of health questions to get as much back ground health information as possible. They finally were taken into an examination room where they performed an internal exam to make sure everything was okay. Finally it was time for the ultra sound. They both couldn't contain the excitement they felt at seeing their baby for the first time. "Okay Kim I need you to lie back and lift up your shirt. The gel is going to be cold but I'm sure you remember that." Kim lies back and lifts her shirt showing her still flat belly. She flinched at the cold gel being applied but stared at the screen as the wand started to move around. It seemed like forever before the whooshing sound came through. Kim looked up sat Adam tears running down his cheeks. "Baby. I love you. It's amazing isn't it?" Kim spoke to him but he never took his eyes off the screen his just shook his head mesmerized by the sight and sound. "Okay So if you look right here you can see your baby, it's the size of a blueberry currently. Everything here looks good and the heartbeat is strong. Do you have any questions?" Eli asks they both shake there heads. "Okay I will give you some time and go print out the photos for you both." Eli left the room. They just stayed there staring at the screen.
They made it to the car before Adam pulled Kim into a hug and just sobbed into her hair. He was beyond over joyed by this moment. Seeing the baby made it all the more real. He couldn't be anymore happy than he was right now. Kim started to cry as well, she swore she fell in love with him even more at this moment. She never knew it could be like this, sharing this moment with someone was a moment she will never forget. They continued to hold each other till the tears ran dry. Adam laughed when he pulled away assuming they both looked like a hot mess but neither cared. They got into the car to drive home. That night Adam started talking to the baby "hi baby. I saw you today. You're so real now. I can't wait to see you for real and hold you. You have the best momma already and we love you so much baby." He kissed he belly and rubbed lotion onto her skin. This started a trend for a new nightly routine. She sees nothing but love in his eyes. Kim thinks the only thing that might top this excitement right now is the fact that Christmas is two days away.
It's Christmas Eve! Intelligence was off the next three days since a Voights daughter in law and grandson will be in town from Arizona. He never sees them so he closed the unit for three days. Kim is thrilled! Three days with her boys with no chance of being called would be amazing. After breakfast Kim and Jackson made Christmas cookies and set some aside to leave out for Santa. They even got Adam to join in at times. He was just happy watching them in the kitchen. The pure joy on their faces. After cookie baking they all went outside to throw snowballs and build a snowman. They were making the memories that Adam never had as a child. He made sure they were taking lots of photos so when Jackson is older he could look back at these to remember the good times. Back inside Kim built a fire in the fireplace while the boys changed into warmer clothes and got hot chocolate started. "Darling are you sure you know what your doing over there? I can start it if you are having issues?" Adam teased. "Baby I'm an Northern East Coaster trust me I can build a fire better than most people. I know it goes against the man code but it's okay that I'm better at this than you." Kim teased right back as her fire took off. "Good job babe. You did do better than me." Adam kissed her head and then handed her a hot cocoa.
Jackson was down for a short nap before Bob, Kate and Sammy show up. They wanted to make sure he lasted the whole visit and wasn't cranky. A cranky almost 4 year old would not be fun for anyone. After the nap was over Jackson was full of energy and excited to see his cousin again. Kate and Sammy arrived first, Sammy and Jackson ran off to play video games while the adults talked. Kim was serving drinks when Bob arrived. Adam opened the door and allowed him to walk through. While they made progress on the last visit Adam was still hesitant about the relationship with his dad. "Merry Christmas pops. Come on in. Kim's serving drinks in the kitchen and the kids are playing video games." Adam spoke as Bob followed him to the kitchen. "Adam it's great to be here. What have you been up to this off season?" Bob was trying to stay up to date on Adams life to stay included. "Well we had the press tour, the championship parade and the White House visit. Then Kim and I talked about the long term like what happens when I retire. We decided that I would go to college and become a certified personal trainer and a nutritional counselor. That way it's something I can use now to make my career better but also for use afterwards. Kim has a college degree in Business as her back up plan and we agreed that I needed one too." Adam was proud of this decision knowing that he had a plan for the future. It allowed him to feel more settled in his life and in his future. "Sounds like a very good plan my boy. Sounds like someone has been a good influence on you. Lord knows we couldn't convince you to go to college." Bob was happy for him but thought he may have over stepped with his last comment. "Pops it's the way you guys tried to get me to go. Kim explained, never pushed and showed concern. It was only brought up once I got injured and it could have been career ending. That's where the concern came in. What would I do at my age if that had ended his career? We talked about what I would do and she gave me suggestions and then let me make the decision. That's what I needed. Not someone telling me that I'm a loser and a disappointment. That I wouldn't make it to the majors and would come begging home needing your help. Hope you know that the whole time I was in the minors I worked as a personal trainer. Kept saving that money to have a safety net. I used that money to buy this place when I made it big." Adam spat out that information. Some that Kim didn't even know. "I'm proud of you Adam. I really am. Let's just move on okay." Bob knew me made lots of mistakes but he wanted to move on. Dinner was served shortly after that. The conversation had moved on to lighter topics. Thankfully the kids were unaware of any issues. All the kids cared about was opening presents. "Jackson what is the rule for opening presents?" Kim asked when dinner was finished. "Dinner has to be cleaned up and put away before we can open gifts." Jackson yelled while jumping up and down. The adults all laughed at his excitement. "That's right. It's the only way I can get him to help clean up after dinner." Kim laughed again. The kids got to work helping clean up the table so they could get to the presents.
"Adam make sure you have a garbage bag or two for all the trash." Kim reminded him. She knew what a mess Jackson could make with the paper. He gets so excited that he shreds the paper and throws it all around. She could only imagine what would happen this year with Champ included. He loves to play with paper, leaves, snow, it's all fun for him. They all gathered around the tree, the kids sitting on the floor closest to the tree. Adam played Santa and handed out the gifts. They went in other oldest to youngest taking photos along the way. Creating memories like Kim had growing up, the way she wanted Jackson to grow up. Adam and Kim asked that no one buy them gifts this year instead they asked that the money be donated to a charity that they choose. Adams was a local food bank that helps feed the needy and Kim's was an animal shelter where she got her first rescue from. For Kate they got her a matching jewelry set, for Bob they got him a expensive bottle of bourbon and for Sammy they got him a video game that he wanted and a new Cubs jersey. Jackson got trucks, cars and building blocks. He was in heaven. He passed out around 9 and Adam took him up to bed. Soon after the guest left and Kim and Adam were alone to enjoy their first Christmas Eve together.
Kim was half asleep naked wrapped in Adam strong arms when she had an idea, a crazy idea. She wiggled around so she could turn to face him. His eyes were closed she thought he was sleeping. She watched him her a few minutes before kissing his face. He slowly opened his eyes as she continued the assault of kisses all over his face and neck. "Darling why are you awake? I thought I wore you out." Adam could barely keep his eyes open but it seemed she was on a mission. "You did. But I had an idea and it's crazy but everything about the last 8 months has been but I know in my heart this is where I want to be, forever." Kim moves so she sitting up the blanket wrapped around her, it's a little chilly in the room. "Kim what are saying? Maybe it's because I'm still asleep but I'm having a hard time following here." Adam laughed and really so did Kim. "Baby marry me. I know it's quick but watching you fall in love with our son, my son, watching you fall in love with our baby, watching us fall in love with each other has been the best times in my whole life. I want to spend every day of my life with you as my husband, my partner in crime, my best friend, the father of my children. I want us to grow old together because somehow in this crazy world we live in fate brought us together. Two people who have broken families form together to create a family of there own. Not bringing the mistakes of the past with them. Breaking old patterns, only bringing love and acceptance. So what do you think?" Kim waited as he stared at her. He suddenly jumped up from the bed and ran to the dresser. "Babe what are you doing? If you want to wait that's fine. I didn't think you would run." Kim was so sure she just scared him off. But he came back quickly and got back into bed with her. He opened the box he had in his hand. "Darling first off hell yes! Second I was going to wait till New Years to ask you. Under the fireworks ringing in the new year. Because you're right I do love you and our son and this baby that no one knows about. I love this family we created. I love how we have so much in common but are two different people who blend together perfectly. I love how we are made for each other, the perfect fit. And I love that you are one of the most amazing people I have ever met. So yes let's get married. Let's become a permanent family, let's grow old together." Adam takes the ring and places on Kim ring finger. Again the perfect fit. They fall back into bed wrapped into each other as they celebrate their engagement. This truly becoming the best Christmas ever.
