It's Christmas morning. Adam is slowly waking up with a very large smile on his face as looks down at Kim and sees the ring on her finger. It wasn't a dream, it was real. It lifts her hand gently so he can look closer making sure it was really real. "Baby what are you doing?" Kim was awoken by the movement. "Making this is real. That we are really getting married. That it wasn't some cruel joke." Adam was still in shock, in awe that Kim wanted to marry him and well asked him. She turned in his arms to look at him closer. "Baby this is real. Just like our baby is real. I can't wait to spend my whole life with you. I love you." Kim leaned into kiss him. Letting all her love and emotion be poured into the kiss. They were on cloud nine and nothing could burst their bubble.
"We should get up. Jackson will want to open presents soon and I would him to eat something first. So let's start making breakfast and then we can go wake him." Adam agreed but little did they know Jackson was already downstairs on the couch staring at the tree. He was way to excited to sleep. "Darling look at the couch." Adam noticed him first. He was trying not to laugh but it was too funny for words. "Jackson how long have you been down here?" Kim asked trying not to be annoyed or laugh. Thankfully they had no where to be today so he could take a longer nap if needed. "I don't know mommy. Awhile. I want the presents." Jackson was jumping up and down. So excited. His first Christmas with his dad. It couldn't get better than that. "Okay look I want you to eat some food first so how about we open one gift first then we make breakfast Okay?" Jackson nodded so Kim handed him his stocking to open. Full of little things to play with and even some candy. It was already the perfect morning.
Adam and Kim worked to make breakfast for the family after letting Champ out to go to the bathroom. They were making French toast and bacon all while Jackson was playing. "This is the perfect Christmas morning. Our family of three, soon to be four. We are getting married. What more could we want?" Adam just hugged Kim while he spoke about this morning. She just nodded and kissed his neck. They shared a moment before getting back to cooking because no one wants burnt food. They were broken from their bliss by a knock at the door. They were t expecting anyone. Kim went to the door with her back up piece in hand just in case but hid it quickly when she realized it was just Kevin. "Hey Kevin. Come on in. Adam Kevin is here!" They walked into the kitchen to find Adam. "Hey man you forgot these gifts at my place when Kim was in the hospital last. Thought you might need them." Kevin handed them to Adam. "Oh man I completely forgot. That was such a crazy day. Thanks man. You want to stay for breakfast? We have plenty." Adam offered knowing he went out if his way to come here today. "Nah man thanks though. My brother and sister are waiting for me. But definitely soon." Kevin wanted to spend the day with his siblings. They spent the day remembering their parents they lost a long time ago. "Alright man. Definitely this coming week we should hang out." Adam said as they did their bro hug. He was about out the door when Kim spoke up. "Kevin wait a sec. do you have a girlfriend?" The boys both looked at her. Trying to figure out where this was going. "Uh no. Why?" Kevin asked Cautiously. "So there is this new rookie at the district. She is super cute and also sweet with some sassiness mixed in. I think she would be perfect for you! Can I set you up for New Years?" Kim was beaming. She really thought they would be good together. "Can I see a photo first?" Kevin laughed while Adam went back to cooking. He loved that they were so friendly. Kim grabs her phone to pull up a photo of the new girl to show yo Kevin. "Okay set it up. Talk soon girl." Kevin left after that. Needing to get home. And breakfast was ready here so he let them have there breakfast.
The three sat down to eat breakfast while Jackson was practically bursting at the seems. He couldn't wait to open his presents. He didn't get a lot since his birthday is less than a month after Christmas and they didn't want him spoiled. Adams job allowed them the ability to buy whatever they want whenever they wanted it but he had always chose to live modestly. Yes he lived in a gated community, in a large house with pool but it was still not ridiculous in size. He could have bought larger but chose something more manageable. He never wanted to struggle to pay his bills like he had in the minors and Kim living here only helped even more. Her home was officially sold to Mouse so she was helping with the bills at Adams house now. They split it 50/50. After breakfast Kim started the fire place while Adam cleaned up the kitchen. As a child Kim remembered Christmas morning at her grandparents home sitting in front of the fire while they opened presents. Those are the memories she wants for Jackson even if he isn't close to his biological grand parents.
It was now present time. They decided to let Jackson open all his gifts first so he would be busy when they opened the gifts to each other. Jackson was thrilled to get a couple of video games, a skateboard with all the padding and helmet and a bike that had training wheels. He couldn't wait to be able to use them. Adam was avid skateboarder as a kid and wanted something that he could teach Jackson since he was still too small for baseball. And every kid needs a bike, it's like a must have as a kid. He also got some board games and books to help him learn how to read since he was a year away from preschool. He was growing so fast. He ran off to play his video games leaving Kim and Adam alone to open gifts. Kim had bought Adam a new pair of sunglasses to add to his collection, a framed photo of him and Jackson, a new watch that was super fancy and one last gift that required some explaining. "So we are taking a trip to some small town in Pennsylvania that I have never heard of before?" Adam asked confused. "We'll see this town is in between where I was born and where my family lives. It's a chance for you to see where I'm from and get to know my world a bit more. I have a whole other life out there. A whole large group of friends, people who know me by name when I walk into their store or restaurant. Adam I even own a home there, not totally by myself but I own half of it. I want to share it with you. Let you in more." Kim explained knowing the house thing might not go over well but it was her east coast home base. Away from her family out there. Her safe space. "I love it. It sounds interesting and fun. I can't wait to see it and meet these people. Now second house? How come I'm just hearing about this? I'm not mad it's just odd." He wondered why she withheld that info. "Well I didn't want to make a thing out of it. My best friend and I both have family out there. We can't live with them when we visit because they drive us nuts so we pooled our money to get a nice place out there. It's his home office when he's not on the road. He travels a lot but it's his home base. And mine too when I need it." Adam paused processing what he heard.
"He? You own a home with another guy?" Should he be concerned. "Babe don't be concerned or worried or jealous. Yes he and I dated a long time ago but we were better as friends. We have separate rooms, we don't sleep together, we don't see each other naked. He are friends. He's not a threat to you at all. I promise. I love you and only you. You have made my life complete. I was always waiting for you I just didn't know it. Life made more sense when you came into it." This is what Kim was trying to avoid. "Okay I trust you. But don't keep stuff like that from me. It feels more strange hearing it now since we are getting married, pregnant and been dating for 8 months. You see where I'm coming from?" Adam didn't want to fight and he did trust her. "Completely understand. And I promise I will from now on."
Kim opened her presents next. "Babe I don't need anything. The ring is way more than enough!" Kim exclaimed when she saw all the boxes. "Darling just open them. Some are gifts for both of us if you know what I mean." Adam winked before handing her a gift. Kim got flushed while she opened the first one which was a lovely necklace with his initial and Jackson's. It could be added to when the new baby came. He her a spa day gift certificate that included a massage geared towards pregnant ladies. He got her a new Kate Spade diaper bag since Kim loved Kate Spade. A few other gifts including bath bombs, lotions and candles. Finally the other gifts. Kim found several boxes of lingerie and toys to use in the bedroom. "Darling I know what you are thinking. Let's just try it out and see how it goes. We always have fun and are creative in the bedroom so let's add to it." Adam knew he was probably pushing it but Kim was pregnant and the hormones were nuts. "Tonight after Jackson goes to sleep!" Kim kissed him hard before moving those items to the bedroom. Last thing she needed was for their son to see those items.
Kim returned downstairs with a smirk on her face and Champ following close behind. She lets him into the back yard to do his business and stretch his legs. "So Jackson fell asleep while playing games. I guess the party animal couldn't hang with the adults anymore. I placed him in the bed so he's more comfortable. It's adorable." Kim laughed when Adam pulled her onto his lap kissing her like crazy. "Baby I want to continue this but I don't know when he will wake up. I promise tonight we can have fun and play with the toys okay?" Adam nodded but didn't stop kissing her. He just slowed it down to a make out session. They had to break it up when they heard a Champ wanting back in. He laid in front of the fire place to warm up after being in the harsh cold winter Chicago had to offer. A huge difference from being in the sweltering heat of Afghanistan.
A little while later Kim went upstairs to get Jackson for lunch. She didn't want him to sleep all day because then he wouldn't sleep that night. Adam made the lunch, nothing fancy just sandwiches and Mac and cheese. They sat around the table talking and realized they never to.d Jackson that they were getting married, "Hey buddy. Momma and I want to talk to you about something okay?" Adam started hoping he would be thrilled but you never know. "Okay did I do something wrong?" Jackson asked confused about this conversation. "No buddy we just wanted to let you know that mommy and daddy are going to get married. Is that okay with you?" Adam asked nervously. Maybe he should have asked Jackson and not just her team. "Well would that mean we would have the same last name? Because when Aunt Erin married a uncle Jay she got a New last name." Jackson didn't answer the question but he didn't seem opposed to it. "Well Baby I would get a new last name yes, but for you it's a little harder. Adam would have to adopt you to be able for you to take his last name." Kim explained hoping it made sense. Jackson seemed to be thinking hard about his next question. "Daddy do you want to adopt me? Is that okay?" He asked Adam. "Buddy there nothing more that I want in this world. You are my son and I can't wait for us all to share the same last name." Jackson got up and came around to hug Adam while Kim watched with tears in her eyes. It was beautiful to watch.
They spent the rest of the day and evening playing games inside and outside and reading books. It had been the perfect day. They put Jackson to bed early since he was falling asleep on the couch and Champ followed close behind. They were never far from each other. Once they were settled Kim and Adam went to there room to play with the toys Adam had got them for Christmas. Kim's pregnancy hormones were out of control and it only made her want Adam more so this was a welcomed surprise. They had both been surprised at home horny Kim had gotten as her pregnancy progressed. Adam knew it might not stay this way so he planned to take advantage of it while he could.
After several hours of play time they were both exhausted, needing a breather. Adam pulled her into his chest while trying to regain his breath. They were both covered in sweat and panting but they wouldn't change it. She may need to keep her sleeves down at work since the cuffs left a small mark on her wrist but nothing a bracelet couldn't hide. They had fun and enjoyed there play time. Adam finally gained the ability to breathe again "Kim darling what kind of wedding are you wanting? I want to start planning ASAP before the season starts up again and I have to leave for spring training." Kim looked up with doe eyes in awe of how excited he was to start planning and how he wasn't waiting either. "I don't know. I always had this dream of getting married on a beach, sand in between my toes, breeze in my hair, the sound of the ocean beside us. But I'm sure that's not your thing." Kim answers him honestly. Knowing he would probably hate the idea. He was a mid western born and raise Chicago boy. No ocean, only lakes. It's not the same but close enough I guess. "Darling if that's what you want that's what we will do. Your eyes lit up and sparkled when you mentioned it. The sound of your voice saying those words sounded like love and contentment. I say let's do that. I want to see that look everyday while planning this since I know it will get nuts." Kim didn't say anything just climbed on top of his to start kissing him again. Long and slow before entering back into a state of bliss. If all wedding planning could start and end like this they would have it made.
The next morning they awoke blissfully sore but happy. Kim slowly woke up wrapped in Adams arms. She never wanted this to end but knew they needed to start getting ready to head to Voights for Boxing Day. While not an American tradition Voight used it as a day to bring his whole team together for the holidays. Knowing they would be with their biological family's on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. He was a totally different person when outside of work. He was calm and loved playing with the kids. He also didn't mind the dogs coming either as he loved German shepherds. All in all it was always a great day. This was the first time Adam would be apart of the festivities. He had no idea what to expect but knew it would be fun since he got along with all of them, even Voight.
Kim got in the shower while Adam got Jackson up and started breakfast. She took longer to get ready so it just made sense. Kim had warned Adam that there would be tons of food so a light breakfast was best. So he made a simple oatmeal with some fruit and bacon for everyone. It would hold them over till they got to Voights. "Daddy are we telling everyone that you and mommy are getting married today?" Jackson was so excited and bursting at the seams to tell everyone. Privately they had decided not to tell their families yet since it was still tense with all of them but friends and teams were fair game. "Yeah buddy I think we are. They are like family to you and your mom so I think they will be super excited for us all. Are you excited to tell everyone?" Adam asked after answer his question. "Yes! I can't wait. Mommas gonna look like a princess!" Jackson giggled. They made small talk while they ate and waited for Kim who came down shortly after to eat while Adam ran up to shower.
Around noon they headed over to Voights. Kim wanted to be early to help set up since it's the least she could do for her boss. She did want to wait for everyone to get there before making the announcement but either way was fine with her. She already knew that Erin would be her Matron of honor since maid of honor is for someone who's not married. It was only right since they were like sisters and been with each other through all the good and bad times. As they drove over Adam and Jackson were talking about cars and trucks. The usual between these two. They were so alike. It was unreal sometimes that they weren't related. She loved listening to them it was music to her ears.
As Adam drove Kim noticed a car up ahead swerving in the lane. "Adam slow down and watch for that car up ahead. They are driving erratically." Kim spoke calmly not wanted to scare Jackson. "Okay Darling. Should you call it in?" Adam asked not knowing since he had never been in this situation before. "50-21 Eddie I have a possible drunk driver three cars ahead of me, requesting back up. Plain clothes Officer will be on scene if something happens before hand. Advising I have my child in my car and it's my day off I'm not armed." Kim rattled off more information when asked about street location. They continued to stay behind since Kim wasn't armed and didn't have her vest. Adam just listened and stayed close but far enough away if they needed to stop.
The car crashed into a tree with in minutes of the initial call. "50-21 Eddie the car has now crashed. I need an ambo, tow truck and patrol on scene now. I walking close to check for a pulse." Kim called again and Adam looked nervous, scared maybe that she was walking towards the scene. Luckily she wasn't alone. Other people had stopped too. "Everyone backup please. Off duty detective on the scene please give us some space. The accident has been called in. I need to all to back up." Kim spoke loudly and clearly. Needing everyone to step away. She found a pulse,it was strong. She look back at Adam and called his phone. "Adam please call Voight and let him know what's going on. I don't want him worried." Adam did as directed. This was the first time he saw her work a scene. Yeah he saw her during a bar fight but watch her work in, call it in, take charge it was kind of hot.
The ambo arrived right before the patrol officers. "What do we have Kim?" Brett spoke, surprised to see Kim on scene. "White female, maybe 30. Driving erratically before crashing. Reeks of booze and has been unconscious the whole time. Pulse is strong though. Probably passed out." Kim relayed the info to Brett before going over the same info with patrol. Once Patrol was on the scene they look over getting a formal statement from both Kim and Adam as well as the other witnesses that stopped. Once they continued the drive to Voights Adam couldn't stop smiling. "Baby what's going on?" Kim asked. "Darling that was hot! Watching you work the scene. Take charge like that. It was amazing. Right buddy?" Adam asked Jackson. "Yeah mommas a bad ass!" He replied before Kim gasped. "Sorry that was my bad. I said it first. Buddy don't say ass it's a bad word and daddy shouldn't have said it." Adam knew it was his fault but it was funny. Jackson just nodded along.
They finally arrived at Voights 45 minutes late. Luckily they all understood since most of them were cops and would have done the same thing. "Hey welcome. Hear you caught a crime scene on the way over." Voight laughed so did everyone else. "Yeah real fun on my day off. No weapon, no vest. Tons of fun." Kim laughed back before grabbing a water. Jay was just about to bust on her when he saw her hand. How no one else noticed he did know but still. "Burgess! I was just about to bust on you for not having your side arm with you at all times but then I noticed your hand. Anything you want to tell us?" Jay smirked as he called her out. Kim sand Adam just laughed as her flashed her hand for all to see. Jackson took it upon himself to explain "Mommy and daddy are getting married!" Jumping up and down with a giggle. Everyone starting to clap and cheer for the couple. Rounds of Congratulations rang out. They were all so happy for the. "Im glad to see you finally grew some balls Ruzek!" Dawson commented. Causing more laughs from the couple and blushes on Kim's cheeks. "What are we missing?" Erin spoke next very confused by how they were acting. "Well I didn't ask her. Kim asked me." Adam explained. The gasps heard from everyone followed by more laughter from the entire team including Voight came next. This was perfect to them. This was her family and how she wanted their engagement to be announced. With laughter and happiness.
The whole team got around to eating and opening presents before settling in to watch Christmas movies. The ladies made their way to the kitchen to clean and prepare dessert while boys had a pretty intense conversation about whether or no Die Hard was a Christmas movie. At times it got loud but it was all in good fun. They never settled on the correct answer because there wasn't one. Just a good debate between friends. The ladies discussed the wedding. "Have you given any thought to the wedding yet?" Erin needed to know details. She couldn't wait to help start planning. "Well I told Adam I had dreamed of a wedding by the ocean thinking he would hate it. But he said hearing the way I spoke about my vision made my eyes sparkle so he agreed. I also decided that I would love for you to be my matron of honor Erin." Kim spoke just as Erin pulled her into a hug saying yes in her ears. They were beyond happy at this moment planning for the future. "Do you know when and where yet?" Erin asked next. "Not really. I think it will be end of next October after the season is over so we can actually enjoy it and I would North Carolina but I need to figure that out with Adam first." Kim knew exactly where she wanted to get married she just needed to talk to Adam about it but it could wait till later.
After dessert and another movie the team all left for home. It had been a long three days for everyone and they were headed back to work tomorrow. They needed rest. Kim more than others because of her pregnancy but still no one knew. The middle of July couldn't come soon enough. But they still had a long way to go in planning for all things. Jackson's birthday was less than three weeks away, the new season starting soon after with Spring training right after Valentine's Day and then their anniversary. It was a lot but they could handle anything as long as they stayed together.
When they got home Kim quickly made a phone call. She didn't care if Adam heard it or not. She had called to set up the blind date for Kevin got New Year's Eve. The person was excited Adam could hear that and they planned to the meet up at Molly's at 9pm. Adam didn't know her name and he didn't need to know. All he cared about was that she was a good person and would treat his best friend with respect. If Kim approved that was good enough for him. It would be a good time that's for sure. He needed to make sure he planned a nice night for Kim since she was trying so hard to make his friend happy.
Several days past and it was finally New Years Eve. The team left work early, they didn't have a case and Voight was watching the kids for the night so he wanting prep some before hand. Once the kids were over at Voights Kim went home to get ready for the night. She found Adam dressed in a suit looking dapper as hell. "What's the occasion?" Kim asked smiling as she walked towards him. "Well I'm taking you out for a nice dinner first. We don't get to that often and it's a special night. The night I was going to propose to you. So get ready so we can do dinner and then head to Molly's for fun and the blind date you set up." Adam explained as he held Kim in a hug. He kissed her forehead before pulling away so Kim could get ready.
Kim wore a black sequin dress with her hair pulled into a sleek ponytail. Long earrings and 4 inch heels. Adams jaw dropped when she walked out of the bedroom. "Damn darling! Are you trying to kill me? You look stunning. I think we should stay here tonight and skip dinner and Molly's!" Adam winked as he hugged her. "Nope not happening til much later. We are doing dinner and Molly's. We promised. I promise to make it up to you." Kim kissed him before grabbing her coat to leave. They shared wide smiles are they got into the car to head off to the restaurant. It was upscale and definitely pricey. They didn't normally dine at places like this, though they could afford it, Adam still preferred a diner or a mom and pop joint. He only did this because it was a special occasion.
Dinner didn't go as planned though. Other patrons were taking photos and some bold enough to come over to ask for an autograph. Adam declined every time. After several photos were taken he got pissed off and Kim couldn't stop him. "Folks! Put the cameras away. We are trying to have a nice dinner out. It's because of people like you that we never go out together. You think that's fair? We don't! And if you don't put them away I will call the cops for harassment and stalking." Adam sat down after that. They never saw a camera after that. They enjoyed the rest of dinner and dessert before heading to Molly's.
