Chapter 12
Louise slept the morning away. When she finally woke once more, it was nearly lunchtime. She was surprised that no one had waked her; then again, none of the others paid her much attention. Her mind still swirled with thoughts of Kid and the future. Could he really find a way to make this work? If not, could I just swallow my pride and take the job cooking and cleaning? Both seemed impossible in the stark reality of the afternoon sun.
Her thoughts were interrupted by voices outside her door.
"Guess what I heard Tompkins say. Them Express riders is moving their station to Rock Creek. I guess we won't get a chance to attract their business after all."
"Wasn't that guy with Louise last night a rider?"
"I think so. It figures she would be the only one of us to attract his attention. I guess there's no accountin' for taste."
The voices and laughter faded as the girls entered one of the rooms. Louise sank down onto the bed and buried her face into the pillow that Kid had slept upon. Tears came easily and she couldn't help but think, I guess it wasn't meant to be.
