Law closed his eyes as he massaged his temples to ease the slight pain in his head from staring too much at the monitor of his computer all day. He rested his back on his chair to relax a bit. He then glanced at his wristwatch to check the time. It's 2 in the morning. As usual, he lost track of time by focusing too much on finishing his workload.
Donquixote Trafalgar Law is a 24 year old bachelor and has been working at the most prominent hospital in the country as a surgeon for almost 4 years. He is considered a genius and the most successful in the field because of the achievements he had earned at such a young age. Because of the reputation that he has to maintain, he's making sure not to make even the slightest failure in his job.
Being a doctor is not easy, from studying to earn the degree to actually working almost 24/7. He rarely sleeps, which explains the dark circles in his eyes, making him look scary and intimidating. Not that he could sleep if he wanted to. He can't sleep at night for several reasons. That's why he just uses it to his advantage. He worked even at night to make use of the time he was wasting just laying in his bed, eyes open and fully awake for hours.
He gets the cup of coffee he brewed earlier and puts it into his mouth. To his dismay, the mug is already empty. He was about to go to the kitchen to make another one when his phone rang. He picked up his phone to see who was in their right mind calling him this early in the morning when people were supposed to be asleep.
Unregistered number calling...
"That asshole." He cussed pressing the decline button and put back his phone on the table.
The call must be one of Sachi's friends. His colleague, who's also a doctor at the hospital he's working. He often gets random calls from the girls he's hooking up with him which he constantly declined. Had he known he's going to do that kind of things he shouldn't have bothered giving him his number in the first place. He's got no time for shits like that.
He continued what he's working on when his phone rang again.
'Fucker. Seems like changing my number is what I'm going to do first thing in the morning.'
He grabbed his phone and finally answered. He only needed to decline this one to make it stop from calling him again.
He was about to say something when when he heard a familiar low, baritone voice whom he hasn't heard in years speak.
"Law my boy, It's been a while."
The sound of the other man's voice is enough to make the young surgeon's blood boiled.
"What do you want?" he asked harshly, visible the hatred in his voice.
It's his father who's calling. He didn't need to know how he got he's number, nothing is impossible to Donquixote Doflamingo. It's been years since they last speak with each other.
'What does he need? Why did he have to contact me now when he can do that long ago? not that I wanted him to call me.' Law thought at the back of his mind.
"That's all you're going to say after all these years? I am hurt." he heard the older man let out a faint laugh like he's really hurt.
"Get to the point, old man."
"My, my, don't be such a brat to your father. I just wanted to inform you that we will be having a very important family party at Dressrosa a week from now, and it's a must for you to attend."
For a moment, he suddenly forget about his hatred towards his father when he heard the place he just mentioned.
"Dress... rosa..." He whispered but enough to be heard by the other man.
There was a minute of silence between the two before Doflamingo speak again.
"Yes. Corazon and I's hometown." Doflamingo replied.
Tons of memories came flooding on Law's mind enough to risen his anger towards the man just by him mentioning his mother's name.
"Keep my mother's name out of your filthy mouth. You don't have the right to mention her name." Law said full of anger.
Doflamingo didn't respond. Law continued speaking.
"I thought you didn't want us to set foot on that place ever again. Why do you want me to come back there?"
"Save your questions for later. I don't have much time in me. I'm a busy man remember?"
Bastard.
"We had already cut our ties after you disowned me years ago. I am not going to that nonsense gathering—" Doflamingo cut him off.
"I am not telling you this to get your approval. It's an order from your beloved father. I will send a letter to the hospital for a request of a month's leave." the older man sigh.
What the hell is this old man saying?! Law angrily thought. They've been living their lives peacefully and separately, and suddenly here he is, telling him what to do.
"I am not going." Law declared with finality.
He heard him laughing on the other side of the line.
"AsI have said, this is not for you to decide. It's either I ruin your beloved hospital or you will attend our humble family reunion peacefully. Please keep in mind what I am capable of doing, Law."
Law muttered a curse. He's using that card. He knew what his father's capabilities are. He can close down the hospital where he's working with just one order. Donquixote Doflamingo is a business tycoon. He owns large companies all over the country and some other parts of the world, and he knows it is possible for him to do what he wished for.
Law breathed heavily to calm his nerves. This conversation is making his head hurt.
He heard him laugh again.
"I was just kidding my boy. You're smart. I know you will be a good boy and you'll follow my orders. Our men will pick you up at your apartment later this morning. Get your things ready and rest well. It's nice chatting with you. Have a good day ahead!"
He heard a loud laugh before he heard his phone beep, a sign that the call had ended.
"Did he really say that? Your old man is kinda scary." said Sachi.
"You should attend that family gathering, Law. It's the best opportunity for you to rest. Look at you! I can't barely tell if you're still alive or dead." said Bepo who was playing with a pen on his table, Law gives him a death glare, much to Bepo's chagrin, Bepo slid the pen back into his lab gown.
"Bepo's right," Penguin, supporting Bepo's words.
All three of them are doctors who are also working at the hospital. Law met them when he was in medical school, and from then on, they've been following him ever since. Insisting that they should be his friends. At first, it's kind of annoying because he really doesn't need any connections with other people, but as the years passed by, He just let them be and opened up a little bit to them.
The three of them rushed to check on what happened after the head doctor, Doctor Kureha, visited him at his office earlier this morning to say that she's allowing him for a month's leave, not because she's afraid of his father, but because she wants him to rest.
Doctor Kureha is the elderly head doctor of the hospital and the wife of the owner, Doctor Hiriluk. She rarely visits the doctors personally because she only shows up when there's something wrong with the hospital. Most of the doctors are scared and intimidated by her appearance. That's why they were very worried about what she might have said to Law. Despite them knowing that both of the doctors had taken a liking to him.
They bugged him, and he was left with no choice but to tell them what really happened.
"Man, it's time for us to get back to work. Good luck with your vacation! Enjoy every second of it!" Sachi patted his shoulder and before he grabbed his hand to break his arm, the three of them were already running to get out of his office.
Law rested his face on his palms and leaned back in his chair.
After the conversation with his father earlier this morning, he quickly changed his clothes and drove to the hospital. He can't just wait there till the sunrise and let his father's men get him. He has to work. But Doctor Kureha already gives her permission after she received his father's nonsense letter for leave.
He opened his drawer and get the picture frame he'd been keeping with him for years. It's a photo of him together with his mom and his little sister when they were still alive.
He felt a drop of tears fall from his eyes, but quickly wiped it away. He put the picture back inside the drawer and dialed his father's number. After a few rings, it picked up the call and before his father could say a word, he had already spoken.
"Fine. I'll go."
